As an 11 year old watching Liverpool in Australia every week on match of the day, I used to call him Alan Handsome, that's all I heard. True legend of the football club.

I'm 58 now, first Liverpool memory is the 74 Homecoming (watched from my uncle's place outside the Kop). First game was in 77, followed home and away through the 80s. I am blessed to have seen Hansen's entire career. Have to say, Jocky is the best defender I have ever seen play the game. His reading of the game, his positioning, his dribbling skills, his leadership. And he was so cool- in the way helloed and moved, but also in how he played the game. Could do everything but nobody could carry the ball through the opposing midfield anything like Jocky - even VVD doesn't have that element. Look at the 5-0 Rush game...Hansen was the star man in that.

I remember Hansen coming, playing and leaving and he was simply one of the greatest ever. It's for this reason that this world isn't ready to lose him just yet. He's only 6 years older than me so let's just hope he's got a few more years with us yet (along with me, of course)!!

Phil Neal missed one league game in 10 years from 1975/76, unbelievable.

I really enjoyed this episode. Coming from a younger (24) fan, it’s great to hear about the history and players from previous generations in such depth and general knowledge from the older heads. Much respect 🫡

The 88/89 team needs to get the props as they were 1 minute away from achieving immortality during in the one of the most horrific events in human history.

Agree. It’s amazing they got so close and if Hillsbrough never happened they would have won the league.

Glad to see the free show is some original chat rather than simply focusing on more transfer speculation (the Gutter has that covered)

Steve Heighway was the most exciting player for me... so pacy, long striding great crosses for Keegan and Toshak... Jimmy Case was hard as any player ever.... loved Hansen so much I bought a Partick Thistle shirt and for the running style... Ronnie Whelan - often overlooked but superb, goalscoring midfielder with a crazy gait. All-time faves: Dalglish and Firmino.

The younger gut=ys getting it confused lol. He played alongside Thommo until 81-2 and always said to him that the 78-79 was the best ever Reds team. He played with Clemence Souness and Dalglish, all possibly the best in their positions too. Personally I thought his partnership with Laura was the best I have ever seen but he was great with Gillespie too. Even great with Hysen at then (won the league) until glen was hit by injuries, as was Jocky. It too the club all those years to recover from his loss, such was his influence on our style of play. Not until VVD came did we return to that invincible aura at the back.

I remember Hansen going on goal in the 5-0 exhibition game against Forest. Everyone holding their breath waiting to see something as rare as he's teeth.

It was the League Cup Final 84. They called him Handsen afterwards lol. It hit his thigh and spun up on to his arm. Technically it was a hand ball.

I watched Hanson from he signed for us and today eveybody says that Virgil is a Rolls Royce of a player, let me say this Virgil had nothing Alan Hanson nothing, majestic, sliky and only defender that ever glided on the pitch.

No argument bout Trent in the convo for best RB but to say that no one else cones into the discussion is to overlook Phil Neal, who I can tell you was a fantastic footballer, albeit from a time when RBs were RBs.

I would definitely say Sami Hyypiä because that natural successor to Hansen which took 10 years to find a player of that caliber. One thing that was insane watching football from that late 80s period was the back pass rule which Liverpool rinced out to the max. So it hard to judge Hansen I'm the games I saw him play. That was the best rule change FIFA made for the game I think Liverpool did struggle to adapt to that change and post Hansen until Houiler and Sami Hyypiä came into the club.
