@@nikeman116 You can thank the national lampoon, American pie and other adult comedies from the 2000s for depicting college life in the way that you described.
My theory is that most screenwriters didn't had much social life as teenagers (ore even in college), so their main point of refference are the celebrity parties they see when they're already living in Hollywood
I'm surprised they didn't make Henrietta Buttercup's obsessive rich ex girlfriend who desperately wanted to be married into the family so she can be claimed as the 4th Powerpuff Girl.
You’ve got your Cartoon Network show’s mixed up you meant princess Henrietta is the candy hunter who was friends then enemies then friends again with number 5 from codename kids next door
I think the worst thing about this is that a show centered on grown up versions of the Powerpuff Girls isn't a bad idea in and of itself. It just that the CW took the idea in the most lazy, uninspired direction possible.
And the idea of using superheroes as a metaphor for child stars and show parents is also an interesting angle. But the script just seems so mean-spirited.
Thing is we already had that idea done better. Back in the day there was this MMO called Fusionfall that took place in a slightly more "grown up" rendition of a Cartoon Network shared universe. Among the NPC's in the game were teenage versions of the Powerpuff Girls. And honestly the games depiction of them was pretty good
The only faith I had in this project was with the casting especially Dove Cameron as Bubbles. But after I read the script, I realized even the most talented actors in the world couldn’t make this garbage work
This is the first time of me hearing what they were planning with the professor. Couldn't even have done a sports parent cliche instead- it wouldn't have been the professor we know and love, but at least him pushing them to be their best and not realizing he's pushing too hard would at least make more sense. I also didn't realize the girls were fifteen in the pilot. I thought they were college aged: starting to branch into their own people, exploring what they want to do in the future, etc. It's like they made the wrong choice for anything Powerpuff Girls related
@@skootergirl22 I think only Buttercup got a race swap. I know that's an issue for people, but I often don't mind so long as the writing is good enough to make it work or is just plan good
Is true. Bubbles and Buttercup's problems seem more logical for someone in his 20s that for a teenager... specially if they were going to have the same character flaws 10 years later. It would make more sense to have Bubble's alcoholism and Buttercup's chronic infidelity start as consequence of the villain's death, instead of being problems that were already taking a toll on the team when it happened
@@helenn6551Chloe Bennett is half Chinese... yes, the CW maed the smart one Asian, the angry one Black and left the dumb one White; because they're beyond lazy
at least somebody ended making some slight balance to that with that fan film that I think came out a year or so after that movie came out. I was loosely familiar with the show via people in the Channel Awesome reviewer circles. But hadn't watched any myself. But I remember enjoying the fan film. I thought the Misfits looked kind of cool in the post credits of the 2015 movie. I don't think the rest of the movie will really be remembered. I think the only way that movie can be brought back up again is if somebody who was young when they saw it remembers it and kind of if going back through memories of their younger years and goes through it. Maybe seeing stuff they liked that made them happy or something and then maybe seeing stuff they didn't like and now see with slightly older eyes why certain parts might not've been good as they remember. And possibly after that maybe making one of those youtube essays on it for a particular topic or theme within that movie or maybe dissecting the movie and using parts they find to make potential memes or tikotok videos or something as far of some kind of Nostalgia cycle.
I find the premise of superheros as stand ins for traumatized child actors interesting. I think it would have worked better as its own franchise instead of an established IP.
Honestly the thing I was comparing this to in my mind would be the Venture Brothers via the whole "Child hero grows up traumatized and psychologically damaged from their constant adventures and battles and becomes a jaded asshole an adult" angle. Bubbles and Buttercup both having toxic stress relief habits and Blossom straight up having anxiety attacks gives hints of this potential. Thought it doesn't seem like they quite hit the parody nail on the head if that was what they were going for.
It feels like someone deliberately leaked the script to save everyone from the catastrophe w/c is the live itself. Whoever you are, the people of townsville & the generation who grew up w/ ppg thank you.
While I dislike the idea of Utonium being a show-dad since it's character assassination, the idea of using grown up former kid superheroes as a metaphor for the issues many child stars face and the problem with show-parents, over.merchandising and similar stuff is an interesting idea. I don't like it as a Powerpuff-girls adaptation though. And while I am tired of seeing "evil Superman", I think it would've been better if they went the Brightburn route instead of just using the IP of the PPG.But, sadly, studios don't dare to bet on anything that isn't an established IP. Also if the script was better because here they just seemed to tackle the subject very haphazardly.
I'm just glad it's canceled. My version would be Bubbles is the sweet airhead popular with many friends, Blossom is the arrogant leader who believes she's always right, which causes tension in the sisterhood team Buttercup is the tomboy that believes she can super hero solo and doesn't need her sisters anymore
The 2016 Power Puff Girls wasn't the first reboot, that honor goes to Power Puff Girls Z. It was an anime reboot way back in 2006 that was sorta supported by WB which had some representation in the than CN MMO Fusion Fall but it was sadly never released in the US.
Not to mention that in the CW reboot, Professor Utonium isn't a good dad like how he was in the 1998 classic series. After hearing Blockbuster Buster describe the CW reboot script, Professor Utonium really should take notes from Fred Flintstone on how to be a good father.
Honestly, I'm glad that the CW reboot got canceled. The Powerpuff Girls SHOULD be wholesome, clean, & suitable for all ages to watch, which is EXACTLY what the 1998 classic series is, just like The Flintstones.
I mean, it really could have had a spark to it. Here’s how I would have done it: *First, the casting.* Blossom is played by a natural redhead (we need more of that representation these days for fuck’s sake), Bubbles is played by someone who looks like who they casted for this (not gonna lie, she looked perfect for Bubbles regardless of the shit), and Buttercup is played by someone whose ethnicity is Korean/Japanese/etc. The Professor is played by someone who’s Jewish, Ms. Bellum is played by someone with Irish heritage, Mr. Mayor’s played by a little person (don’t look at me like that, they need roles too), the preschool teacher I can never remember the name of is Latina, and multiple other roles are played by other diverse people, but they actually resemble the source. There’s even new characters to include other ethnicities that aren’t mentioned in what I’ve listed. *Next, the story.* The girls are in high school or their last year of middle school; pretty much an older age than in the cartoon, but not too old to call them ‘girls’. Pretty much an age where it’s not taking advantage of child actors since adults that look younger can be casted in teenager roles. After an incident happened years ago when they were younger, things went horribly wrong during a fight with one of the villains, which caused more casualties and destruction than the villain was causing on his/her own. This made the citizens rise up to force the girls to stop all hero work and they instead create their own elite force to combat the villains. They were hated so much that they had to change their own names and hair in order to not be recognized. At their home, however, they can be themselves and address each other by their actual names. They have to live somewhere else, however, because their own home was constantly being vandalized and The Professor feared for the girls’ already fragile mental health. Blossom feels like everything is her fault and constantly apologizes, even for minor things and things that genuinely aren’t things to apologize for. Bubbles has night terrors and sometimes cries in the middle of the night, as she has reoccurring nightmares of the incident. Buttercup is prone to fits of rage and gets extremely upset whenever someone even remotely repeats what they’re saying over and over. They live in a ramshackle house they all built together in the forest while their old house is routinely trashed despite them not living there anymore. The main reason why the house isn’t exactly the best is because the girls now seldom use their powers regularly out of fear that they would destroy something on accident. Yet despite their concerns, they still use their powers to protect The Professor whenever he’s in danger in the wilderness... Which is a lot since he’s not much of a woodsman. He’s not the only one that they protect either. Because they still have a drive to help people in need, they save others who get in trouble in the woods. However, they quickly fly away before the people they save can see them. (If anyone wants to see the rest, let me know! I don’t want this to be too long when nobody actually cares-)
For some reason which I can’t explain. I also imagined a live action Buttercup was Asian. Even as a kid. Aside from her black hair, I was raised up during times with stuff from Cartoon Network. Ben 10 and all the works. I’ve seen appearances of female Asian character types that look like cool punkish types. I forgot the name of this, but kind of similar to GoGo Tomago from the 2014 Big Hero 6 animated film. I think a few female characters from Older Power Rangers series fit this bill too. Too little me, these types always look so cool!
@NaquanGreen-zt4gr Oh, thanks! I actually went to town on making my own episode/fanfic after writing that. I’ll show you the first part of the episode I had in mind to replace the dumpster fire. *The first episode:* The girls are getting groceries and different supplies in a Target-like Superstore. The girls’ 16th birthday is coming up (the day of it being the first airing of the PPG cartoon, but not the year) and hints imply that they don’t make much money (“You can get a treat, but be sure not to get anything on brand, girls! Cheaper means we can get more for what we have!”). However, when they go off, The Professor sneaks away himself for something. Bubbles wanders over to the pastry area and sees a donut of her cartoon self, which she smiles at and is thinking about getting. However, a younger kid asks to get one first. When he’s given it and he takes a bite, Bubbles sees that it was filled to the brim with cherry jelly, which makes her eyes widen as she pieces together the intentions of it. Everything cuts to slow motion as there’s jelly on the kid’s face and there’s a close up of the large bite into the eye... Buttercup goes over to take a look in electrical appliance aisle after she chose her treat in order to pass the time (there’s a scream in the background, which is Bubbles, but Buttercup can’t really hear her due to the sound). When she goes by the TVs, it’s turned to a channel that’s a sort of talk show and in it, the host (which seems to resemble Him slightly, but not enough to make it completely obvious) and the guest are making really awful jabs at the Powerpuff Girls. The moment when they start talking about The Professor, however, she throws the nearest TV to the ground and completely destroys it with her strength... Right in front of some nerdy employees. One of them takes his walkie-talkie and is about to call security, but the other one just eases his hand down because they really don’t want to possibly die. Finally, Blossom was looking around in the clothes section when she heard Bubbles scream, then a loud crash. The series of events sounds to her like her sister is in trouble, so she starts to run to the direction of where the crash was... Only for someone to run right into her with a shopping cart with one of those toy cars on the front. This prompts Blossom to panic and start apologizing profusely... But unfortunately, it’s one of *those* people (“You brat! How dare you do that! Look at what you did! You hit my cart and made my baby scared!” as she points to a 5 year old kid, who’s still turning the wheel back and forth and doesn’t seem to give a shit). The Professor hears everything as he waits by the checkout area and sighs. Calmly, he pushes his own cart and begins to get the girls. He finds Buttercup first, who found a place to hide in one of the clothes racks in case security was called on her. Next, he finds Blossom still dealing with the screeching lady and points out that he’s finding his children, so she should work on finding hers rather than yelling at a teenager. The woman looks into the toy car to see that his kid just up and left during the confrontation. Last, he finds Bubbles, who was in the toy aisle and had surrounded herself with various stuffed animals. He kneels down, gives her a big hug, and starts putting away the toys. Finally, they all check out and go to their car (which looks pretty worse for wear) and they start to drive back to their house. Just before the girls start to apologize for making a scene, The Professor cuts them off and tells them that store didn’t need anymore money anyway, especially from a family with three perfect little girls. This statement makes Buttercup and Bubbles smile a little, but Blossom feels like it’s her fault that the mom lost sight of where her kid was and that she shouldn’t have been so rash. She then begins self deprecating herself, which makes The Professor look extremely concerned... Then after a few seconds, he gives the girls a goofy smile and tells them that while they were leaving, the four of them went through a time rift and that it was now their birthday! But it’ll only last for the rest of the day and after time goes back to normal tomorrow, their birthday will have already happened. The girls get that this is a really corny attempt at making them feel better about what happened, and they start to laugh and even Blossom starts to cheer up a little as everyone starts to play along. Once they get home, The Professor makes the cake (it’s not exactly baking show perfect, but it has that homey birthday feel to it) and serves each of them a slice. The birthday song is sung, and just when the girls think their birthday is complete, The Professor gives all three of them gifts that they genuinely are surprised to get. Bubbles gets a really nice sketchbook and some art supplies since she seems to be developing a love for art (Bob Ross poster optional). Buttercup gets a pair of rollerblades and a helmet since she never lost her tomboy spirit and is interested in derby skating along with other sports. Finally, Blossom gets books in advanced studies, as The Professor saw that she was interested in higher education (that’s the only thing that I’ll admit that the show got right about her adult self). The three can’t help but use their powers to fly into The Professor to give him a huge hug, telling him that he really didn’t have to give them gifts like these. The Professor, however, doubles down and says that everyone deserves to be what they want regardless of everything that happens. After this, they all have the time rift birthday party and the instance at not-Target is completely forgotten. *End of the first part of the episode!*
I would rather watch Adrienne Palicki as a murderous dominatrix with a red, white, and blue color scheme a second time than ever see the CW Powerpuff Girls. Or that Tom Swift that i didn't know until now even existed.
Erod, you should at one point cover Sony's original plans for the Amazing Spider-Man film universe. Sinister Six, Amazing Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man vs Amazing Spider-Man, and even Aunt May movies were all planned.
@@gruthakhul100 rumors said that it was only 1 film uncovering her past as a spy, sally fields denied these rumors saying something like "what? Aunt may movie? no, that would be crazy, no one ever said anything about an aunt may film"
It's like they tried to make another Riverdale, taking a kids story and making it edgy. But people don't watch Riverdale for the edgy update, they do it because you never know what wild bullshit (rocketeer cult leaders, serial killer genes, defeating the devil with a milkshake made with the tears of the Virgin Mary) the writers are gonna come up with next. And yeah, "mature" is the wrong word. This feels like a teenager's first dark fic where they throw in things they know are "adult" (alcoholism, sex, drugs) but with zero understanding or ability to handle those themes.
@TheBlockbusterBuster Can you do a video on the legend about the Orsen Wells passion film based on the old school (and my number 1 superhero) superhero that inspired Batman, THE SHADOW. I know that this film was something that Orsen (who happened to be one of The Shadow's voice actors on the Radio show of the character) was to star in this film and everything was all ready to go but suddenly it got canned or perhaps the legend of how we almost got an The Shadow animated series but suddenly it too got canceled?
It's kinda like mature, r-rated films like RoboCop, the Toxic Avenger, Rambo and some others get adapting as friendly-family saturday morning cartoons while actually friendly-family cartoons like PowerPuff Girls, Scooby-Doo and some others got adapt as adult shows which are claim to be "mature", but is just made for shock value for the sack of shock value.
I remember hearing about this and seeing the images/short video clips leaked and yeah, it had "this sucks" written all over it. Never heard about the leaked script but DAMN!!!! Further proof that "Drake" is a name used for hacks.
Future videos for Legend of Fandom: The Amazing Spider-Man 3 Superman: Flyby Batman: Year One (live-action movie) Power Rangers Hexagon (original version of Power Rangers Ninja Storm) Power Rangers Samurai (Amit Bhaulik's original proposal) Batman vs Superman (pre-DCEU version) Iron Man movie (pre-MCU version) Spider-Man: The Animated Series Season 6
You know that this show could’ve worked had it not used the power puff girls name. It could’ve been three artificially created girls who have superpowers and went the Boys tv show territory.
This is probably the fastest I've seen a legends of fandoms video. Not seeing a video getting posted mind you, just seeing this topic on here being talked about.
Tbh I'm glad this show is gone; because in this timeline we've got another powerpuff girls cartoon tv series being worked on by the creator himself! No evidence on the series as of now beyond word of mouth, but it's far FAR more hopeful considering this live-action series is cancelled and the 2016 series won't be the last powerpuff girls series we see. I'd be even more excited if dexter's lab joined in, but I get why genndy didn't want to make "yet another remake" of the show. Still I should count my blessings, a new powerpuff girls series! Plus a pre-school targetted foster's home! Oh and a new futurama series and Genndy made his "Unicorn : Warriors Eternal" so it's far better than the era of CNReel . *shivvers in disgust*
This might lead to something far worse. An adultified Totally Spies. Since the shows both have similar heroes, an auburn haired leader and strategist (Blossom and Sam), a blonde haired girly girl (Bubbles and Clover), and a dark haired tomboy (Buttercup and Alex). Maybe replacing the Mojo character with Terrence and have him changed to a fellow scientist with his twin brother, Jerry, make the creator of the insects Mandy, and make Tim Scam the Republican mayor of Beverly Hills. And people say that Totally Spies was a fetish fuel show (A claim that's pretty dubious at best considering that most of the examples are just weird coincidences.), imagine a live action show based on it that actually has content that is completely unsuitable for children, has the characters become bastardized, and feels like a Ren & Simply Adult Party Cartoon style reboot of a mostly light-hearted show. I just hope that Warner Bros. doesn't attempt rework this dropped pilot into something like that.
Not everything needs to have a gritty reboot we have stuff like like the Austin power movie Kamen Rider 555 and the James Bond movies in the Daniel Craig's stuff and John wick
If ERod is looking for recommendations for future Legends of Fandom episodes, I suggest he go into detail on the originally planned sequels to Zack Snyder's Justice League. With The Flash now bringing the DCEU to a close this year, it seems like the ideal time to do it.
Honestly I think the worst part about this would have been seeing Donald Fason in such an unlikable character. I’m a big Scrubs fan and seeing the same actor as the compassionate yet quirky surgeon Turk play such a despicable human being would have heartbreaking to watch. And I pray that not a single copy of this pilot leaks online ever.
As someone who grew up on the original Powerpuff Girls series, I am completely thankful this trash fire was extinguished. The script showed that the show wouldn't just slap in the faces of the fans that grew up with the show, but it would have also been dragged through the mud by critics for being regressive and insensitive with how some of the characters are stereotypically presented. More importantly, it would have caused a lot of trouble with Cartoon Network, who would have been no doubt /pissed/ at the CW for doing this to one of their milestone shows.
Seeing as the og fanbase is older they should go for a mature tone and different origins here and there I don't want the same thing in live action there's no point
It failed because it was banking on playing on people’s nostalgia without actually putting in the creative work. It would have been a lazy moneygrab, instead of actually writing a good story. It’s sad too, because the concept of superhero/child stars is actually a good idea.
Thank God this never came out because I know I would hate this and I would still watch the entire series and this would be the biggest mistake of my life
The only question I have is if the mayor had access to mind controlling bugs, why didn't he just make the people vote for him instead of staging a riot?
I keep thinking of two of my favorite episodes of the original - the one that was a parody of the Beatles break up, and the one where the girls decide to teach the citizens of Townsville to think for themselves and solve their own problems. Compare that to this heap of steaming blech....it's on the same level as Crazy Rich Asia Batman. You can't even call this bad fanfic. And I am a casual fan of Dove Cameron, but can't stand her work (and the writing) in this show. This show need to burn. The writers, producers, directors should all be convicted of forging their way through film school or whatever training they had.
I used to be open to remakes, but…no. This ain’t it CW. It’s like producers are so uninspired to retain or elevate the charm of the original show. When you got the hammer out, I was like “don’t do it it’s not worth it!”
You know, every time I think about how pathetic the CW's adaptations are, I always wonder how they'd adapt my manga. Probably have all the characters like each other, hate each other, love triangle bullshit and whiny edgy "I'M NOT A HERO, LEAVE ME ALONE!" bullshit. Jeez
Velma is a terrible adult parody of Scooby-Doo, but this Powerpuff script sounds even worse. But at least this idea was shut down and cancelled, but Velma sadly is gonna have a second season.
I'm so grateful this piece of garbage is gone. No one wanted this to be made and everyone wanted the stupid reboot gone. I hope that one day the writers will give this a proper chance by keeping it close to the original series but until then let's just watch the original and never speak of these two dumpster fires ever again
The outfit should evolve as well. Like Avengers style suit that has different design but possesses the original color scheme. Thank god it was cancelled though.
Honestly, there were parts of this that sounded good, if not at least bearable. But for every one of those, there were 4 or 5 WTF parts that screamed "What were they thinking? Were they even thinking?!" I'm not against looking at the future of the PPG and delving into how being childhood superheroes affected their lives. There's a story there that could be done earnestly and told well, but it can clearly be seen that that wasn't going to happen hear. Glad it's dead, let's move on.
When I watch these, I can't help thinking about things where we did get something that can be viewed, though usually only because it was leaked. I'm thinking things like the pilots for Generation X, Power Pack, and three different Wonder Woman shows ("Who's Afraid of Diana Prince?", the 1974 pilot with Cathy Lee Crosby, and the 2011 pilot with Adrianne Palicki).
The fact that the CW activists didn't bother to reach out to the original creators of the show is insulting but it's not surprising. But also very thankful that this never saw the light of day. I love Chloe Bennet Agents of Shield and she made the right decision dropping out of this crap Fest
I’m not a fan of the obligatory LGB character but honestly I like the idea that the cartoon was made as a cash grab and the whole washed up Celebrity angle. Frankly I’m just now finding out it was officially cancelled and I’m kind of upset
