Thanks to Army Veteran Gamer and his video: • Legends of Idleon - 10...
It looks like it might be safe to swap from one character to another rather than select them from the main selection screen. Still disappointed in the loss in my last video, but it looks like my other characters should be able to collect their AFK gains.
Recorded with NVIDIA GeForce Experience, but it doesn't seem like it likes this game. That record button occasionally shows up in the bottom-right corner, and the resolution of the video ended up being 1200x714 instead of 1280x720. It seems RU-vid just processed it to 480p. Whatever... I don't really understand all of this video stuff.

Only the helmet is Amarok. The rest of the armor is Efaunt. I have shrines on the map that are offscreen. There is an alchemy bubble that boosts defense, but I don't recall how high I have it. I also have defense boosted from the party dungeon Flurbo shop; either +20% or +25%. I can't really remember, but I do know that I still need to boost those sources some more.

It disappears, however, you have two options. You can either drop things you don't need to swap with other things before you leave the area. Or, you can unlock the Deodated Ram pet/follower, which allows you to access storage from anywhere. Now, you can AFK for as long as you like without needing to worry about this. May take a while to unlock it, though. I have C. Custard (same chance of unlocking Ram), idk if I was lucky or what.
