"Miss You" is also recognizable from the start, and Mick Jagger's delivery on "some Puerto Rican girls that's just dyyyin' to meetchu." is unforgettable.
That riff, for me, is the quintessential rock and roll riff of all time. It cuts through the silence of the moment and immediately grabs you. To start a concert with that riff, no matter what cover band does it, immediately grabs your attention. The Stones just have an unrivaled place in rock history for so many things, this riff being one.
Can never go wrong with the Stones. Riff and rock legends for sure, and it makes you wonder what else would be in the vaults! Always a pleasure to tune in.
In high school, The Stones were my favorite band. I had and still do, have every album, know every song by heart, and will always adore them. RIP Charlie Watts.
I loved the Stones since the late 60s when I first heard them on the radio. They became my number 1 rock n roll band back then and here in 2023 they still are. They've been making music for 61 years.
When the boys start their concerts with this song, it always blows up the audience. People jump out of their seats, clap, sing along, dance! Perfect concert opener!! I know; I've been in one of those concerts. Huge fan here!!
Start me up is what introduced me to the stones being born in 76. They’ve been one of my favorite bands ever since I’ve seen them a few times and they never fail to bring down the house!!!
This popped up on the radio and as soon as I heard the first kick of guitar, I knew it was the Rolling Stones. It gave them new life in the 80's. By that point they didn't need chart success to stay relevant, their sell-out concerts and huge tours are proof they never faded away. I definitely remember that MS advertising campaign. Hope you cover Sympathy For The Devil one day, I'm sure that went down really well in your hometown. 😁
The music video for Start Me Up is just as amusing to watch 😀🐓🎶 Besides Mick Jagger's dancing, love all the expressions of Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman ... classic 😏
Tattoo You was at the cusp, from the lengthy, storied career. The '81 tour at Syracuse's Carrier Dome, was memorable! Won't forget Mick announcing to the crowd, with the video board overhead. 'You wanna watch some tele-vision? While flipping through the channels, led into 'Neighbors', an under appreciated track. I loved it! Thanks for the memories, Professor!
LOVE THE STONES!!!!! "Waiting On A Friend" also from Tatoo You absolutely KILLS....Sonny Rollins' tenor solo is my fave on a pop song of all time...🌹🌹🌹
I believe that was originally left of off Goats Head Soup(?) but that’s off the top of my head, but that’s the only song of Tattoo You Mick Taylor is on
@@DC8091 Great story how they acquired Sonny...Something like Charlie said.."He's an icon, no way he'll want to play on a silly pop song..". Sonny's reply: "The Stones?? Yes...Please!!!"
....YEAH, to "Waiting On A Friend"! ....Me Aunt was dating a ne'er-do-well at that time (Early 1982!?), and He took me to the place where they filmed the Video....I felt like a STAH! ....ha-HAA!!
I always loved Undercover of the Night and wish it would've gotten more recognition. It had one of the greatest music videos to go along with it! At that time it was controversial, but now it seems tame compared to what gets released these days!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I agree! I thought it was pretty clever how Mick Jagger played 2 parts in it. It was very creative and was like an episode of Miami Vice.
Keith Richards... I love Jagger's vocal performance. But that riff is the song for me. The Stones are masters at intros and they wrote the book on masterpieces. One song for me that doesn't get enough love is "One hit to the body". I love chart countdowns, used to shoot hookey from church to catch Casey Kasem, Houston wrestling and NFL today... Lol. Good stuff Proff would love to have been the modern Casey Kasem but you've filled that very well my man.
I always said SOME GIRLS was the last great album the Stones put out. After that they did have some great songs spread out over many albums, but on SOME GIRLS every song was great. That album will always be my favorite. I’ve had the record, tape, 8-track, cd, and mp3. Always brings back fantastic memories of my childhood.
@@glo3139 as much as I think the word iconic is overused and too easily given out these days I completely agree with it here. There are quite a few different types of songs on the record but they all fit so well. I would listen to the entire album at a sitting and when the last song ended I’d be disappointed that it was over. That’s how great an album it was to me.
Some Girls was an artistic triumph and resurgence for a band deemed to have lost its creative zenith and motivation after two humdrum releases and the over-decadent tours of 1975 and 1976. It's back to basics and emblematic of the NYC music scene, meshing the grittiness of CBGB rock and roll and the sleazoid dance of Studio 54. Indeed, they've never topped it since.
I remember when this song came out. Every morning, waiting for the bus to come pick us up for school, we always had some music going and every single morning we listened to "Don't Stop Believin' " by Journey and "Start Me Up" by the Rolling Stones. Some great days, some great memories. :)
This is the very song that introduced me to Rock and roll. I'm 44 now, and when I was 4 or 5 years old in 1982-1983, I played this record over and over for 2 years straight. It must have been my older brother's record or something, but it was mine when I got it.
"I was born, in a crossfire hurricane". The Stones have had great riffs, but also many great lyrics over the years. The collaboration of song-writing duos have yielded countless classics. Although many of the other band members have contributed greatly as well.
Never have been a huge Stones fan but there are a few songs of theirs that I do love to hear. My favorite is probably "Waiting For A Friend" and/or "Almost Hear You Sigh".
Mick and Keith using the opening riff to introduce the Rock Camp on the Simpsons was great. And both were really funny in that episode, along with Elvis Costello, Lenny Kravitz, and Tom Petty (RIP).
A lot of people thought that the Stones would never tour again after the 1981-1982 tour. It actually was in real doubt at the time. And to think that the 1989-1990 tour was 33 years ago!
Start me up is the song that brought me back to rock n roll after avoiding pop music since disco had started. I literally started listening to the radio just hoping to hear that song, and found that disco was long gone and there was good music on again.
I became a Stones fan in 83 when they released Undercover of the Night. Still my favorite song by the band. Maybe something's wrong with me. Long live Keith.
.....I'm a HUUUUGE fan of "Undercover..." ..that Video, the mean, kinetic vibe of the tune....I turn into a NUT at the Gym, when I hear it!! ....but, I'm a nut in GENERAL,, so....ha-HAA!!
@@RBS_ Mixed Emotions and High Wire are two of their best. At the time in 1989 and 1990 they looked like old men to me aged 19/ 20. Now as I fall apart and do not recognise myself in the mirror on the rare occasion I dare to look, they look young and compared to how they look now ( except Charlie Watts RIP).
My parents were Stones fans, but "Tattoo You" was GenX, one of the first "adult" rock albums we had for ourselves. "Start Me Up" seemed so risqué at the time for pre-teens. When The Stones toured in the '90s, my Mom invited me, but I thought she should enjoy it instead w/her friends, which she did. To this day, I regret not going, so dumb.🎸🤘😕
I was lucky to live through the golden age of rock & roll 60’s thru early 80’s. With the Stones/Beatles, good boys vs bad boys and all the other great bands. I still listen to the Stones daily, GOAT I cannot tell how privileged I feel by experiencing this music first hand.
At 9 , in 81, I was aware of The Stones but, Start Me Up and Tattoo You started a life long fandom. The stuff they did after and diving into music old than me , became a passion.
The Stones have a North American tour starting early in the summer, how is that for longevity? My personal favorite band with the ultimate front man entertainer, the epitome of cool with Keith and Ronnie! When you hear start me up you can't help but do your best Mick impersonation singing it, fits their catalog perfectly. I haven't missed a Stones tour since I have been old enough and won't miss this one. Mick and the boys never fail to entertain live ,high energy and it's still an event when they come to town! Great episode professor, never never never stop!!
They’ve been performing for 60 years now and they are still a band! Start Me Up is like Mick Jagger throws his whole body into it, and there’s never a dull moment.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 hi Lilly haven't heard from you in a minute! Its has to drive the other artists of the 60s and 70s mad that Mick and Keith are able to still perform at a high energy level and fill stadiums to this day. They are truly one of a kind rock and rollers!
@@MyName-pl7zn They overcame a lot of obstacles to be with us today, and while Charlie is gone with us, he still lives in our true rock and roll spirit.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 yes Charlie was a gentleman and a calming force who held down the rhythm like nobody else could, he fit perfectly. So laid back compared to Mick over the top. Miss him
I saw the "Steel Wheels Tour" in Miami and, I went in as a bit of a fan and when it was over my mind was just blown! We managed to scrape enough $ together to drive to Tampa 2 days later and see em' again! I called my brother and he was just about to call me about going to Tampa and we were supposed to turn on Dale Mabry Blvd but, instead turned into a town called Mulberry and lost an hr and were bound to be late but! Due to the enormous stage (over the top with inflatable woman, an elevator that Mick sang the opening to "Sympathy for..." and made his way down) had technical difficulties according to the various radio stations that were cutting in and out as we drove north. We lost one and when we picked up another we heard they were going to be _delayed_ in starting! So we payed a guy 5 bucks to park in his yard and walked quickly to the stadium and didn't miss a thing! We were close enough to _feel_ the huge pyrotechnics that went off after a musical buildup that created tension and then BOOM! Then of course "Dur nu nup" and the crowd went wild for the opening chords to Start Me Up and, man I've been going to concerts since seeing Rush at 11 but, this was a SHOW! And what a show! I saw them again for the Voodoo Lounge show and again twice and by then I was a true fan of a band that I'd been slightly lukewarm about (although in my 6th grade library I'd take my lunch break to listen to the schools cassette of Tattoo You on one of those little single ear mono earpieces sometimes) up until then. A complete 180 and still feel the same today! I remember a moment standing in the middle of the stadium during Ruby Tuesday when I felt like life couldn't get any better than this as if it were yesterday! Thanks Professor, this one took me way back!✌️❤️🎸🎶🙏
The Rolling Stones have always been one of my favorite classic rock bands. They recorded so many great songs and albums during the 1960's and 1970's. In 1982, I bought their Tattoo You album. "Start Me Up" is my favorite Rolling Stones song they released in the 1980's. After their 2 previous albums where they experimented with disco and had great success (I enjoyed both Some Girls and Emotional Rescue), they went back to their classic rock sound
The funny thing about that riff is that’s it just a simplified version of the same riff Richards had been using for years. It’s used in Honky Tonk Woman and Brown Sugar among many others. Open G tuning if I remember correctly. Sometimes the simplest answer is the best answer.
This was the 1st Stone's song I knew when it was new, it came out when I was 11. I became a RS fanatic @ 19 & never looked back since. Still collecting their 45s to this day. Also loved Steel Wheels.
The Stones’ Tattoo You album was one of the biggest surprises of the 80s. To my generation, the Stones were “old music,” “our parents’ music,” the music of classic radio. Then Tattoo You exploded on the scene. Now Stones music became our music. A way cool time. The 80s: _Lived ‘em. Loved ‘em. Miss ‘em._
When anyone brings up the Stones, it's always going to be "Miss You" that first comes to mind. It's something about the song, along with the people and experiences I had at the time that cemented it as one of my favorites.
Jumping Jack Flash should have been a #1, it killed it, everybody I knew loved it and it converted many friends to stones fans in the Bay Area where I was then, it continually gained popularity over the years, so catchy and the opening riff grabs you pronto.
Agreed. Quite a few people talk about Led Zeppelin being bigger than The Stones, but Zeppelin, as good as they were, didn’t have longevity or as big a catalog. They continued to put out new music for decades.
No they are not “underrated”. Underrated would be if someone said,”You like the Stones?” Someone would answer “Yea, Fred and Barney are the best.” The use of the word “underrated” is by far overused on this channel.
So much to say. Indulge me. I saw the Rollings Stone 4 times. Keith Richards created the greatest riffs EVER! You didn’t even mention Give Me Shelter, You Can’t Always Get What You Want, Beast of Burden, Let’s Spend the Night Together. Someone recently asked my favorite and I settled on Moonlight Mile. Everyone check that out.
I love your show Adam, just as much as I've always loved Kasey Kasim's count down!!!! He would be honored for sure!! I was born in the US in 71. I don't know if my parent's were ever Rockers or not, but They mostly raised me on country and what would have been Rock a Billy back in the day to a small extent, I guess maybe because some of those guys went country while others went rock., but they each did well regardless of which route they took!! So, I had never even heard of the Rolling stones until "Start Me Up!" I've never owned one of their records and probably for the most part have only heard radio plays, but I can say, any of their songs I've ever heard I have liked!!! Keep em coming!!!
I bought the cassette when it first came out, and played it until it was a smoking heap of plastic. A good friend of mine seen The Stones in 1965 at Raleigh, NC, and always told me they were the greatest band in the world. I got to see them 30 years later in 1995 at the same place. I think he was right.... Favorite song? Tumbln Dice.. It will make you cry and smile at the same time...
Recorded in my hometown of Vancouver, the recording quality of this album is so awesome, She goes down, Rattlesnake Snake and Slice of your pie the song that weren’t hits on this album are timeless songs as well.
I remember this song blew up again ( I think in the 90's) when a printer or copier commercial used this song. Rolling Stones are and always will be one of the best bands out there. My oldest kids are 12 and 14 and they LOVE them. It makes me proud when my kids listen to music that is actually good. Rock on brother!
Rolling Stones riffs back in the mid-60s propelled our preteen guitar jam sessions. “Get off of my cloud,” “I can’t get no satisfaction,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” and on and on. . . The Stones were lead riff nirvana!
Let It Bleed and Some Girls are still my favorite albums from the Stones. This song and album are great too, and this is what I consider their second coming era of the band into the 80’s and 90’s.
@@ProfessorofRock I have to disagree with your pick for most memorable line "You make a grown man cry" It's definitely "You made a dead man come" but i understand its a family show 🤣
That song is perfect for workouts! The Stones have so many great records. Personally, I think this was the last one of their really big songs. I enjoyed their mid 60‘s to early 70‘s hits best of all. Still play them in the car all the time!
I remember exactly the first time I heard this song. Driving to work one morning on Beltline road in Richardson TX. I remember the word "start" popped out to me since John Lennons "Starting Over" had been in rotation a while when Start Me Up hit the air waves. Strange how memories of no significance linger in our minds. There are a few songs I remember exactly where I was when I heard them the first time.
Early in our relationship, my wife of nearly 35 years pointed out to me that Mick actually said "You make a dead man come" towards the end of the song. As I was the one who taught her so much about rock music, that totally blew my mind. Remember in "Street Fighting Man" when Keith says "No" while Mick says "Yes"?
Speaking of shelved songs: I’d love for you to do a video on “I Drove All Night”, and how it was originally written for and performed by Roy Orbison, but wasn’t released until years after his death, and years after Cyndi Lauper’s version was released. And especially how his version wasn’t found until it somehow ended up on a weird Super Mario Bros. themed compilation album to promote children’s literacy. Such an odd story, I’d appreciate it if you could make sense of it.
That apartment building featured in the beginning of the "Waiting on a friend" video is the same building featured on the cover of Led Zeppelins' "Physical Graffiti" Album. The reggae version of "Start me up" finally got it's official release on the 40th anniversary re-release of the album. Good stuff. I first saw the Stones live on this tour. My 16 year old self exploded. BTW The band just released a live CD/DVD from their Grrrrr tour today! details on their web site.
Dammit, the Rolling Stones will always be relevant to all that grew up with them ( I included) and to Future Generations. Keith Richards is definitely one of the best at crafting riffs; and wrists are the lifeblood of a song. You definitely have to egg-free that Mick Jagger, is in the top 5 of frontmen of all time. You can play any Rolling Stones song today, and it will Rock .
Like so many of the bands/artists that my parents listened to, this was another one that was a huge part of my childhood in the ‘80’s. Man was I ever spoiled on all the different music eras that my family listened. From Motown to Modern and everything in between. Only if the music charts were still like that today just for the different variety it provided to the masses.
Graduated high school in 1981. Followed the stones since the 70s heard all their stuff. Don’t know how anybody who is a true stones fan can’t say that Tattoo You is not one of their very best albums. I don’t care how they made it or where all the songs came from , every song on that album is something special.
Ha! I remember that Steve Martin album in your background shot. The bit about Steve needing to buy a pair of "cat handcuffs" always cracked me and has stayed with me. I, unfortunately, have also spent $5000 on cat toys and they are fun... What can you say that hasn't been said about the Stones. They're the one of the absolute GOATs.
Hello PR , I watch you all the time and I was wondering if you have ever interviewed Ambrosia or Bobby Caldwell? These are acts that I feel never got the reckonition they deserved. They put out some of the best sounds ever. In my opinion as much as I love Toto these guys were right up there. Also groups like Louisiana LeRoux and Mothers Finest. Check them out. I hope to watch the show soon. Your welcome LOL God Speed
I remember snitching little 45s from my aunt and playing them on my Close N Play. Lol. Age of Aquarius-Wild Thing- and several Rolling Stones songs. I plugged myself in to music in preschool.
Let us not forget the psychedelic classic "2000 Light Years From Home." Also in the 80's, "Under Cover of the Night." That video was so gangster. Peace out
Heard this song so many times because the Detroit Pistons adopted it for the practice warm ups and games for their team that eventually won big. A staple at their games.
Keith Richards and his guitar style just does it for me. Although Page is the reason I first picked up a six string, I never knew how much influence The Stones' duo of guitarists and their style influenced my play. Then I read a Keith Richards biography and was blown away. They knew how to write a tune! Some of their best songs, some of THE BEST MUSIC EVER RECORDED, was written, recorded, and produced on the fly. They'd do a complete song in hours - simply amazing compared to today's over processed crap. Sure, this song doesn't fit that mold, but still. Richards is a guitar god.
The thing that amazes me about the Stones is their versatility. I really dig when they went psychedelic for 2000 Light Years From Home. It doesn’t sound like anything else they did. And Wild Horses sounds very country to me. They were able to translate a bunch of different genres over several decades into their own sound.
Well, they're a true embodiment of the Cosmic American sound: country, blues, rock and roll, soul, and gospel. And, yes, interspersed through their storied career they flirted with just about every musical trend and movement from psychedelia, reggae, disco/funk, and even sample-based music.
Great song by an amazing band. Considering they still had a couple of top five hits left in them, I am not sure you can call this their last stand. One of my favorite lesser known Stones' songs is the cover of Waylon Jennings's Bob Wills Is Still the King. Excellent rendition of my favorite Waylon song.
