Man, I can't say exactly what made this one so difficult, but it is far and away the most difficult standard pin-tumbler lock I've picked... Ever!

It's funny. Everyone is going to look at this and be like "Uh.... Well.... Uhhhh.... Nice lock, tumbl3r". There is just no way to explain how evil that thing is.

That is/was true, but the name comes from the smog that enveloped the area from all the factories and heavy industry, covering everything with soot. For over a century it was the heart of lockmaking and physical security development. There are still some independent lock makers there but it is nothing compared to the past.

Thanks Hux! I should have probably looked it up before I started shooting video, but it popped into my mind and I thought I'd mention it. Appreciate the background and history. The lore and history around this stuff is almost as interesting as the locks themselves.

Interesting! I had never heard of them before Hux sent me this one. What is a night latch? Is that a secondary locking mechanism on a door? Like what we would call a deadbolt here in the US?

Yes, it is a secondary lock with a spring loaded latch mechanism which has been the subject of many cartoons and the business for many locksmiths as the lock latches when the door closes, you don't need a key to lock it! There is also a snip to hold back the spring loaded latch.

I know, right!? When that guy sends you something as a challenge, you know you're in for it. Good idea taking a break. I have a theory that all the fine motor movements in pick actually fatigue muscles in our hands. I think we lose fine motor control, even though our hands don't "feel tired". Not sure if it's true, but after a break, I always seem to be able to open things that had been giving me trouble a day or two before.
