Depends on what time period we're talking about. The Roman empire during it's prime, the legionaries used a gladius. During the late time period they used a spatha as the Romans fought mainly on horsebacks during that time.

One thing I love about this game is that even if your opponent is bigger than you and stronger than you, you can still beat him/her if you fight smart and also if you're lucky. The Roman legionary beat the kinght because it was lucky.
