LEGO ICONS 10497 Galaxy Explorer tackles a true classic for the 90th anniversary - but can it successfully push our nostalgia buttons while simultaneously delivering something fresh and new?
If there’s one word that’s synonymous with old-school LEGO, it’s spaceship (spaceship, SPACESHIP!). Sure, classic LEGO includes much-loved themes like Castle (which is getting its own 90th anniversary update in 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle) and Pirates, but none quite captured the imagination of children in the late ’70s or early ’80s in the same way as LEGO Space.
From the utterly adorable and perpetually happy spacemen minifigures to the now-iconic colour scheme and shaping of the spaceships themselves, the LEGO Space theme gave us a chance to live out our intergalactic fantasies, and build the extraterrestrial spacecraft of our dreams. Fast forward four decades, and to celebrate the LEGO Group’s 90th anniversary, the original and iconic 497 Galaxy Explorer has been updated and upscaled, embracing and adopting a wealth of modern parts and techniques in the process.
However, we live in an age where reboots and remakes across all platforms come thick and fast - the consequence of which is that they’re often hit and miss. At this point, we’re all used to seeing our beloved childhood memories tarnished by cynical cash-ins, missed opportunities and modern takes on classics failing to do justice to their revered source material.
So, will 10497 Galaxy Explorer be able to craft a model that’s more than just an exercise in nostalgia, and deliver a set that’s not only worthy of standing next to its iconic predecessor, but will also be considered a classic in years to come?

Great review! It feels like the perfect Classic Space set they could of done whilst perfectly capturing the original whilst including the most modern pieces and building techniques!

Being a kid back when it came out. My favorite themes back then was City , Technic and of Couse Space. My first large ship was the 928, I also had the 918, but not the 924. Eventually the 928 and 918 was rebuilt into a larger ship, with aditional parts i had from other sets back then. This has survived to this day. Kept the Classic color on the top but underside was colorfull. Have already ordered my first copy of 10497

Great review and thanks for bringing up some great memories. The Galaxy Explorer was the must-have set of the day. I remember my best friend having it and wanting to get it so bad but it was too expensive for my 8 year old self to buy, so I saved up for its smaller brother, the Space Cruiser. Since then, I've collected several, including a few that are mint in boxes in the late 1990s and early 2000s before people started asking crazy prices for them. I had always hoped that Lego would re-release the GE someday... this time, I'm not going to miss it. I've already bought 2.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! My dream classic space set when I was growing up was 6990 Futuron Monorail Transport System. My friend had it and I was always sooooo jealous! Now it's worth an utter fortune so I don't think I'll ever have it...unless LEGO fancy updating that set too! 😂

The second reversed cockpit looks out of place and seems like it was a lazy way to "fix" the back end of the ship.

Once thing I have noticed is that whenever I see a video or picture on this model, the parts used along the edges of the wings are all messed up. It must not hold in place well.

Haha, you were lucky then. I had to fake/copy one using other parts. I got real close, i would guess 98%. The only thing a bit different were the colors. My explorer looked like it had been in battle and had a few repairs after. ;-) I sure had fun with it though and i had a number of other legit kits.

why was the Set-number in the us 497 and not 928 like all over the world??? Even on the brick stands the number LL928 and not LL497. And the new set should have the set number 10928 and not 10497.
@dimitrinicomanis
@dimitrinicomanis 2 года назад
It gets more confusing the more you look into it! So in the 70's LEGO often gave products different numbers and names depending on the region. 497 was the Galaxy Explorer in the US, but called 928 Space Cruiser and Moon Base in Europe. However, in the US set number 487 was called Space Cruiser, and was much smaller than the Galaxy Explorer. I guess they went with LL928 as the ship's designation as LEGO is a European company?

Great to hear there's no stickers, the printed pieces are so much better. Other than that, it doesn't feel like Lego have really added anything to the original. Seems like a classic space Star Destroyer lol
@Fastbikkel
@Fastbikkel 2 года назад
Well this new one is bigger and feels more like a "real" space ship. I like the fact that the crew can move between spaces without going outside. The sliding door to the cargo area, where the buggy is, makes it realistic even more. To me all the small details make for a great 2022 Galaxy explorer.

I preordered two (the limit) at different times last month... and they're both backordered. After seeing this and a couple of other reviews, I'm tempted to find my way to a LEGO store (I don't have one near me) and pick up two more after the release for both the alternate builds and the expected two-set combo MOC from MOC Your Bricks. But I'm also planning on getting two of the Knight's Castle, so we'll see.

@@dimitrinicomanis It seems like some was done in post, but there seems to be an overwhelming blur vignette or extremely shallow depth of field, to the point only the very center of the screen ever feels in focus. And even then, oftentimes it feels like even what's meant to be in focus isn't that sharp. The scenes where you're holding the model feel fairly washed out with sunlight. All the above is meant to be constructive. I visit the website daily and do appreciate your content.

Um... hate to break it to you but currently that is a VERY kind price LEGO put on it. Their prices are now increasing so expect alot of sets pricing to be disappointing... Also, on the topic of those baseplates, I personally don't want this set rising up to 150-160 dollars CAD (I live in Canada so this set is already 130 dollars) just because some people want a few craters. I bet you could find a similar baseplate on bricklink, though not to scale. I will admit, it will be kind of annoying without a locking system but I think it should be fine. Sorry I went on a bit of a rant. I am in no way disagreeing with your complaints about the prices. Just thought I'd be a little informative about the current state of LEGO.👍
