I was in love with the 9398 back then and I'm happy my parents saw that. That was one of the best gifts I ever got. One suspension piece is broken, but the spring wasn't, which made the problem able to solve. Awesome set, awesome look.
The geometry on the 9398 is simply better. More clearance, seems like more flex, geared better, better steering. All it needs is set of BuWizz aftermarket motors and it’ll be the best off-roader by a long shot. The chassis is already good, it just needs more power/torque.

There is a simple gear ratio change by Australian Lego Fan (no extra parts needed) to give the 42099 more torque. He even does a comparison and does the gear change in between and with the mod the 42099 smokes the 9398. 9398 still has slightly better suspension and steering tho
I like my 9398 but wished it had locking diffs and/or crab steering- that’d make a sweet rock crawler. Basically totally independent front/rear steer/power. Was surprised when Lego have done two models since that one and still no 4ws
Thanks for the comparison. I fully agree to your conclusion, 9398 was not an ideal crawler but still better than this new Control+ thingy. I just built 42099 up today and tested it inside the house. I am disappointed. Few piece count, too much backlash in the steering so it cannot even go straight forwards and backwards, not enough power (2x XL motors geared up so they have less torque than 2x L motors), the bright light orange parts do not fit to any other technic set and once the simple challenges are completed there is no point in playing with the set any more.

I really wished you had done all these tests with swapped gears too. For a real comparison of these two. As for crawling technic hub also offers accelerometer values which is a huge plus
I agree with Sariel. The test is great as it compares what you can expect from the set itself. I am just curious if the not-so-big of a difference in diameter of the tires would make observable impact on speed. Great test anyways!
@@searme how about a video trying to mod both sets using vanilla lego parts and see how both of them can be improved and then do another comparison? :)
@@someonesomewhere7073 swap just the IR receiver with an SBrick and you get the same range as with the Control+ you can add 4 PF items on the SBrick vs. 2 on the IR receiver. The SBrick app is free and you can download profiles (and create yours) for most sets.

The 42099 would be way better at climbing if you was to switch around certain gears on both axles, it makes it slower but it makes it way better at climbing!
Yeah but overall the toher still better the 42099 has shłt clearance worse geometry and one trick pony at a time if you witch to climb it will be even slower then the 9398.... also the shłt app controlled driving isn't halping either if the app works as intended...

Killer video. Thanks a lot, Paul. I don't own either the 42099 or the 9398, but I do have the 41999 limited-edition version of the latter. Only ever got it for the dark blue parts and the license plate, never actually built it. Still MISB right behind me. But after watching this I'm quite excited to finally get building. I do remember all the talk back in the day how it was slow but tenacious. Would plough on and on and on. Nice to see it confirmed here. It's been six years and it still pulls more than its weight, both figuratively and literally. Way to go.
When (not if) I get a 42099, I'll build it with the transmission gears swapped for gearing down instead of up. I care more about off-road capabilities than speed. Oh, and there's a category missing: looks. I think it's a tie there: the 9398 is a hodge-podge of colours, while the 42099 has a colour unusable in MOCs.
The effective Bluetooth range will actually vary, depending on what device you are using and the age of the device, where is for the infrared remote. The version one came with the Sun, maybe in the poorest range, but if you get a newer or even an aftermarket knockoff version remote, you’ll find they actually increase the range quite a lot, depending on both the remote and the receiver. When I first got the Lego set for the control, plus Rockcrawler I had a cheap smart phone had very poor Bluetooth. The range was maybe 3 feet before Bluetooth or just shut off but with my current phone and I’ve got an iPhone 13 Bluetooth range is way more than 40 m, also testing their pulling strength by getting both models to pull one and offer is actually an unfair test on the control plus, the control plus motors are designed so that once a certain level of torque is applied on the motor as to actually stop it from losing. It will actually cut the power to the motor to stop it burning out. Where as the order version had no such system
Makes me glad I bought 9398 all those years ago! Looking at 42099, it definitely wins in the range department, though something like the Buwizz might be able to rival it. The new parts look cool as well, but they might show up in a cheaper set in the future. I'll stick with my 9398 for now :)
I will always check SARIEL's Brick before buying 95% of my legos. Sometimes I can not be persuaded out of a buy but I always want SARIELS opinion! Thanks for your videos your great.

honestly if they allowed Control+ to integrate with existing powerfunctions 9398 could have been a better set over the 42099 with one simple mod I hope people at lego see this vid and your reviews and take into consideration the motor stalling
It's a shame! Buy a tamiya buggy for less money with more power and be happy when you really want sth to play in the dirt. And you have to build it aswell...
The new one is just not cool. It does not look desirable, and it doesn’t perform that way either. Maybe without the power cuts it will show its better colors, but we’ll have to see. The rockcrawler, on the other hand, is just so massive and capable, despite the unstability and short range. They’re like a boomer vs zoomer, these two. This has made want to go and resurrect my old 9398 collecting dust on the shelf!
The 9398 set is way more geared down than the 42099, which makes him slower and stronger. the 42099 has the disadvantage the the control+ cuts the power and the 9398 has the disadvantage that infra red doesn't work well outside and has much lower range than bluetooth.

they should have made a PF compatible radio module and a proportional radio control system, that would have solved many problems At least the legos would have been filled with proper remotes.
Got the 42099 and arrived two days after I got laid off from my job due to the cost cutting. An enjoyable build. Took me about 8 hours to finish. Sucks at inclines though
Thanks for this comparison. I was thinking of getting this, but after seeing how much of a pavement princess it is, I'll save some money. The kids at our Lego shows really love driving it over the rocks, logs, and toy cars and the new one can't handle that.

Honestly the 2012 one already won before the competition even started. The newer one is not only a tad worse than the old one, it is also $50 more expensive and 400 less pieces?!
i dont think this is correct comparison. 1. 9398 has 2 motors for wheels which makes him all wheel drive. not like 42099 which has 1 motor to drive. 2. with this of pf control range we better use wire. 3. maybe lego or smbd will make update so the power + will not cut power for motors. and idea if you put cotrol plus to 9398 how it will drive. And need to notice from the release of 9398 too many many years passed and have to follow rules on kids safety. maybe this is influence on different aspect of the toys.
This is the correct comparison of the sets as they come out of the box, without modifications. Which is the only fair way to compare two commercial products.
Two combined into one: the old overal build cause it just looks way better..also 4x4 steering. then the new motors as they seem to perform better and say goodbye to shitty infrared. Too bad it cuts power so quickly ):
dude don't look at the ground clearance. Look at what size obstacles they can go over, because as long as both the wheels are infront of the entire wheelbase. and there are not bumps, even with a 1 stud clearance you can go over quite a lot of obstacles

The title I literally which is the best off roader and at the top speed test the point was given to the new one in my opinion the old one is a better one bc it's not about speed duh in my opinion this test is about who is slower
9398 travels slower, but it has more torque, and 42099 has less torque, but it’s faster! In 42099 it is fashionable to rearrange the black and yellow gears in some places, it will become slower, but the torque is greater. Then he will be able to pull the chain and win forehead in the forehead
I guess, if you changed the transmission in 42099 to more of a crawl, the performance test may be switched its favor. As you know, there is always a trade-off between speed and torque.
