For this video I've condensed a myriad of design files into a whistle-stop journey through the digital design process of my first Modular MOC: Fast Food Corner. This is a new style of video for me, so I do hope it's
entertaining and coherent. There's so much to say and see so I do hope I'm not rambling too much. A more structured set of design videos may well follow in the future. Please let me have your feedback!

Thanks Robin for this video, definitely helps to see all the hard work and process of thinking behind the magic of bricks. I'm not currently a digital designer myself so all these advices are warmly welcomed.

@WelcometoEuphoria
@WelcometoEuphoria 4 года назад
Great explanation! I find it quite hard to describe the design process so I think you've done that really well. It's amazing that you use a very similar 'colour-coding' scheme for some elements of your draft builds because I do exactly the same. I use colours that I'm unlikely to use in the build itself. I also use pink plates for the connections between floors although I use dark pink ones. It's then easy to select all those bricks in that colour and move them out of them out of the way when I want to separate the floors again. I also colour-code the plates layer separating the floors and I tend to use bright green. It looks terrible but it's a high-contrast way of seeing very clearly where the levels lie and whether they line up, that's especially useful when you're building up the plate layer between levels but also when you have floors that are part-built or changing shape. I've found that there are major advantage to digital building, that solve some of the frustrations in 'real' building: - obviously the ability to use parts that you don't have, in colours that you don't have, and as many of them as you like.; - the ability to 'clone' either the whole build or parts of a build, either for using the same thing multiple times or for trying lots of different versions of changes; - the ability to save versions so you can go back to and compare, see how it used to look, or pull in things that worked before but you have since 'broken' or changed.; - just the ability to undo when something doesn't work. That's very frustrating when building in real bricks; - the ability to change colours in situ. Very useful when you're colour-coding bricks in the build that you want to change colour later, or if you find bricks are expensive in one colour you can change the design to cheaper bricks (easier in Studio which has selections for colours that are actually available and an indication of price); - the ability to 'hide' bricks (make them invisible) so that you can see through areas of the build that you've already done and see inside the builds. - lots of other features, like the 'conflict' feature in Studio which tells you when elements interfere with each other or don't fit together properly. On the other hand it's also useful to mock up some things in real bricks so that you can check out how they really fit together. It's especially useful for any bricks that use hinges or curves as they can be difficult to test in LDD or Studio and some constructions can be difficult to visualise on a flat screen. Very interested to see more of this kind of discussion. Max
@RobinHoodBricks

Nice demonstration of how you created your modular. You’ll love the improvements that Studio 2.0 has over LDD. One of which is the hide feature so you don’t have to move a load of bricks out of the way to look inside something. Also it highlights if you’re trying to use a colour of brick that doesn’t exist. Plus the hinging of bricks is so much easier to adjust. You’ll find it pretty easy to pick up. If you need any help just drop us a message.

The change is slowing me down massively. I used to be able to centre my view with a right click, now I have to right click and select centre view. Grrr. Also the brick menu seems harder to use. I'm always miles away from the next brick I need it seems!
@smilinduck
@smilinduck 4 года назад
Robin Hood Bricks you can always use the keyboard to move your creation around. A-left,D-right,W-up,S-down. Holding your right mouse button rotates the creation. And using the roller wheel on your mouse zooms in and out. As for the brick menu I find it easier to use the search feature. Just by typing in 1x3 brings up all the bricks matching that size.
@RobinHoodBricks
@RobinHoodBricks 4 года назад
That's good to know about the keys for movement. I would ideally like to toggle off uncommon things like patterned bricks because they're always in-between the bricks I need, so a lot of mouse wheeling!

So, I only ever used the pieces I had and changing things takes a lot more time because you need to take everything apart and put it back together instead of being able to just swap out pieces within a wall or something. I guess I'll have to get used to using one of the programs now. 🙈

When I build I don't much care about legal or illegal building techniques (other than stressing parts - I'll never do that). If it does what I need and it fits I'll use it. Great video on your process, didn't seem like 40 mins! I very occasionally use digital means to plan a build, but I'm much more likely to just do the iteration thing in the brick, so to speak. Often my designs are driven by the pieces I actually have. Does that restrict me? Sometimes, perhaps, but I also feel that sometimes having too much choice (almost unlimited, as I would digitally) can be rather overwhelming and I don't get anywhere!
@RobinHoodBricks

I think if you have something unusual or special it might be good to play with the bricks. I did that with the Juniors window pieces. After the stage that your pieces have run out then digital is the only way remaining. I think people would be amazed at how few spare bricks I have!

Great job!! Just watching you go through each process iteration not only gave me good ideas, but showed me a couple of quick techniques for LDD. Realizing I should also change to studio.io I did manage to download it on my phone and put it on my computer. But since I have no internet I can't seem to finish the install. Point is I'm stuck with LDD for a while and I noticed you have about 15 more categories of pieces to choose from than I do. Is that also do to me using LDD offline or is there a way for me to get those bricks as well? Also video series idea for you. Start a design with some basic concepts. Post it with the intent of feed back on what and how to build next. It'd be like a build from the Robin Hood community. After each post take the best ideas you like from the comments and make that the next video, rinse, and repeat.

You need to unlock the remaining bricks. See: www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/53760-unlock-all-bricks-in-ldd-with-extended-mode-instructions-here/ I like your series idea but I don't have a lot of bricks so it would be very slow and inefficient as I'd have to buy just the bricks for the next stage. If I had a wall of spare bricks it'd be great!

Not instructions. You can join my Patreon for the LDD build file that you can import into Studio, albeit with a few issues. There's a few pieces like the Fast Food windows and all the stickered pieces that you'll need to work out too if you want it identical. I can always help with questions. Enjoy!

Very nice, Rob. I kind of liked the version with the golden 1-1 studs between windows and on the roof. Did it look too nice for a building next to the station, or what was the reason for the change into silver?
@RobinHoodBricks
@RobinHoodBricks 4 года назад
Exactly. It looked a bit too nice for its end location. Also the gold was, and still is, in the Pawnbroker windows so it looked a bit too similar!

I've been enjoying using stud.io recently as brickbuilding time has been limited, and obviously not restricted by what I have to hand as well! Can you not create layers or sub-assemblies in LDD (eg each building level). Makes moving stuff around a lot easier especially when replicating stuff.

You can group them and move whole groups but I find this just as quick to be honest. Your way is probably better!

Because you can build with parts you don't have yet, experiment, do colour changes in seconds, try stuff out. Building digitally is brilliant. That's why they do it in real business too!
