couldn't agree more with saying 18+ sets should still have play features, having them just add on to display models to make them even better (like the sliding ramp and removable side engines on the galaxy explorer, so cool!)
I do hope 18+ sets from here on out will do a better job of consistently incorporating functions like this. There have been some really good examples lately though - Gringotts, the Shadow Box Batcave, Pac-Man.
Got this set about a month ago, always wished I had the original, while building I was constantly using the play features in between steps just appreciating how well everything works while still being relatively simple easily one of the best building experiences I’ve ever had
Jesus, if I had this as a kid, I wouldn't be able to take my hands off of it. This really looks like they perfected the play feature element. 4:20 "a bit ridiculous to compare but I'll do it anyway"😳🤣
Raiders of the Lost Ark is my favorite movie of all time and the Indiana Jones line is possibly my favorite line of Lego sets right next to Minecraft. It's a franchise I've loved all the way through and was so delighted to hear Lego was bringing it back, especially this iconic scene and a recreation of a classic set that I'm very lucky to own. Really hope Lego keeps the Indy line going for just a bit longer. Can never get enough of Indiana Jones
Recently I've not really wanted a ton of play features in my sets, but with the few present in Lion Knights Castle and how perfect this set is, it's pretty clear that when Lego *wants* to, they're perfectly capable of adding play features that don't detract from the visual elements of the set (and actually enhance it). Rivendell is still my favorite set this year but this set is a close second, the OG boulder chase set is a core memory of mine
I'll be honest I didn't realise how much the old one had aged, or how much they resembled each other. Would love to see more dioramas that aren't just static, yet look good on display
I'm really glad I finally caved in and got it, and I think you'd enjoy it too! If you get a chance to fiddle with the functions before you purchase it, I think you'll be 100% sold on it.
Your review/comparison made me wanting even more for mine to come soon. This is the first set I rather decided to ask for a local non-official seller to bring it than waiting for it to come at stores (In Spanish, in case that what I wrote isn't understandable: es el primer set que pido por encargo en vez de esperar a que llegue a las tiendas que venden la marca). I love Indiana Jones, the movies were the reason I started to wear fedora-styled hats, and the 4th one was the first movie I saw in the theater by my own. I couldn't adquire a LEGO Indiana Jones set back then, but now I'm just waiting for mine to come soon. It will be the biggest set in terms of pieces I will have (I think the Monster's Hunter Vampire Castle is bigger though it has much less pieces). Glad you enjoyed this set!
Are we not going to talk about how beautiful this set is as well? The techniques used on each face and skull decal are really creative and something I've never seen before in an official set, or even in most MOCs!
This line of sets was such a wonderful surprise. I always loved the Indiana jones theme and this video made me so happy. Apso i am truly flabbergasted thet the original temple escape retailed for $60! I do wosh lego made more remakes though because you can’t really bring back a theme thats been dead for 10-15 years with three sets. Anyways this video really brought me joy and thank you for sharing this with everyone. ❤❤
First I loved your video! Second, this is just a suggestion and if it takes up too much time then that’s fine, but maybe could you make some star wars stuff cause you are the best builder ever and seeing some star wars stuff from you would be really cool
Lego Indiana Jones was one of my first themes I had growing up and I was super excited to see it return. Even if it was a small wave probably to get people excited for Dial of Destiny… but still this set feels like what all 18+ sets should be
100%. I do hope we get a few more Indiana Jones sets next year. I feel like these have been selling decently well - people were sure excited about them at least!
I tried to get this set at the LEGO store on release day and struck out in the first hour of the store opening. Struck out again online and yet again when the LEGO store employee told me when the next shipment came in. I finally got it on the third shipment and I built this set on a live stream. I, like you, thoroughly enjoyed this set. It was fun to build, didn't have much, if at all, repeated steps and the play features were fun to build. I still have this set sitting on my desk in view of my webcam so all my coworkers can marvel at it. It truly is a master piece set.
I had planned to get it earlier as well, but it was just continually out of stock for so long, and the only place that had it available was Target for $170... But yeah, it was still worth the wait. So impressed with this one!
I brought this set on a whim because it reminded me so much of the lego indiana jones sets I couldn't have as a kid, this is deffo worth the price! It is so good!
Only thing I don't like is LEGO's new art style. It's fine for their non-licensed sets, but it just looks worse for the licensed ones, especially prevalent in LotR and Indy.
You forgot to show the plane from the original :) I am on the fence about which version I prefer. Yes, the new one has way more detail, but there is just something about the original's blockiness and what it managed to achieve with its limited number of pieces. Also, giant Duplo ball means infinitely more playability to me (and my cat) For one reason or another I still have MSIB copies of the original Temple Escape, the Flying Wing, the Shanghai Chase, the Temple of Doom and the Race for the Stolen Treasure sets. There is just something incredibly beautiful about the artwork of these original LEGO Indiana Jones boxes.
Hey Cheesey, if you love Indiana Jones, I highly recommend checking out 1950s Scrooge Mcduck comic books. believe it or not, Scrooge Mcduck is the inspiration for Indiana Jones, and his comics reflect that. (Sadly no Donald Duck Lego theme though) 🙃
Thanks for the comparison review! The original definitely looks a bit bland compared to the new one which to be fair can take advantage of the much more expansive color palette that LEGO offers these days. I also really appreciate the price point. It feels on par with other licensed sets that cost $200+. And great point re playability! Little switches that made something move or made a door/wall become unhinged were always my favorites as a kid so this one delivers so much with all those cool Technic mechanics.
Many people don't see the difference, but IMO this set is clearly designed to be a display set first. It feels more like a "single play" gimmick type set which I never liked. Yes the features are very soild, and many builds are indeed very well made, but still all those pieces used for base could have been used to make this whole set much longer, or even if it lacked that rised base - much cheaper.
It definitely is made for adults, no doubt about it. And with that target audience in mind, I think the displayable elements like the base and the quote become essential. I would be curious to know how many kids are actually into Indiana Jones these days, too.
I work at Hypixel as a level designer! Been there 9 years now. As much as I'd love to go full time with RU-vid, I just wouldn't be able to survive off the revenue here alone. :,(
Really love how much more sculptural the new version is. Also, it obviously has the benefit of having a more contemporary palette hahaha but it's such a nice display piece!
I wasn't into Indy before I decided to make this video, but I figured I had best watch the movies ahead of doing this comparison. The first three are so much fun, and I'd 100% suggest giving them another chance.
Now, this is quite off-topic so you might remove this comment, but I just fully completed the geometry dash level Clutterfunk and I‘m really proud of myself :D
