As far as increasing prices and shrinking the sizes of sets goes, this is probably the right direction to go. Lego is not getting any cheaper, but if they constantly deliver more intricate and higher quality builds such as this one, I would complain much less about the pricing.
The ship really is perfect, but I still can't justify spending 50 on a ship that small, no matter how good it is. Hopefully it stays in stock long enough to go on sale!
Love the ship, i remember that the director had Buzz's ship designed that way so Lego would have to make a classic space canopy. Also Alt head Buzz look like a generic rebel pilot haha
It's hard to get a minifig to look like Buzz due to the lack of a comet-sized chin, but I think they managed alright. It's nice that they included options, but he definitely needs the blue balaclava to not look like a generic man.
The new windscreen piece reminds me of the old five-fingered hinge windscreen from back in the day (the longer angled one). Definitely have to check this one out 👀
I've been incredibly excited for this set. Super overlooked ngl. It's a fantastic build, sturdy and looks so cool. Reminds me of a Colonial Viper from Battlestar Galactica. Don't even care about the movie haha
Really gives off classic space theme vibes and I think they know that. May even be one of the reasons why it comes with a stand, aiming for young and old fans of Lego and general space fantasy
Agree about robot cat's eyes, although selfishly I'm glad they're normal eyes because I'm not interested in movie accuracy. The Lightyear sets are the first in 2022 where I feel Lego has reduced the box size. It's a hefty box of Lego but people used to "$50 = certain size box" might get sticker shock.
I think the triangular printed console piece is genius. Most consoles are never squares or rectangles anyway on space fighters, they usually are round or something like it, so having a triangular is so close as it gets. Very nice.
this is the classic space set i've been waiting for, and it's a licensed set. i got this and the zurg set to get a "perfect" buzz lightyear, and made a small modification to the cargo space to create more room for the wings. and both crystal canisters fit side by side in the bottom cargo bay.
Colonial Viper, meet Overwatch! and have a nice Classic Space canopy and a UCS stand. and YAY LEGO for including dual heads for Buzz and THREE hairpieces! someone really cool at Lego is listening to The Jang and us Jangoids:)
I actually think $40 is about the right price for this. I'd easily pay $45 for it. I think $30-35 would be underselling it in the current market and would be excellent value. But yes, the RRP of $50/£45 is a bit much.
Real nice set in my opinion. I'd like to see an MOC of it in gray/red/black tones. Also it kind of reminds me of the starfighters in Battlestar Galactica.
5:20 That triangular tile represents I.V.A.N. which is a named and voiced AI character in Lightyear. I'm not sure if there have been named, licensed characters (including inanimate objects) that have been represented as stickers in the past (not including stickers that merely _reference_ said characters, but specifically pieces that are meant to _be_ those characters in LEGO form); if not, then that would be why I.V.A.N. uses a print. What a beautiful set, I'm not a Classic Space fan but a fan of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, and it's wonderful to see a Pure Build for this as I've missed those. Especially seeing as I doubt I'll be able to get my hands on it anytime soon, in light of a certain VIP (Very Important Purchase) I mentioned on stream last weekend...
This set is awesome, I switched around the direction of the wings blue tails to look like guns and it is quite easy to do. The figures are great and the value is awesome. They said this is the first spaceship in a long time for lego to make outside of Star Wars. I am happy with this cool ship. Very cool if you build up the top tail fins with some blocks to be even more cool.
While I would have been happier with a $40 price point, I think $50 is fair for what you get. A callback to classic space, an awesome new canopy mold, interesting build techniques, a very simple yet effective stand and plaque, and 3 minifigs. I think as far as stickers, I only applied the consoles and hazard striping and left the XL-15 ones off and it still looks awesome. I'm seriously thinking about creating more of the stand so I can use it on other sets like playscale A-Wings, or even other similarly sized Star Wars ships.
I really loved this build’s retro vibe. It fits with the movie, where things are designed to be a bit bulky. It’s before their space colony has made things more sleek and modern.
From the previews I thought the ship was smaller than it was, which made it seem overpriced. But its bigger than I thought, and more importantly looks even better
fun fact: this model is the XL-15. in the trailer, we saw the XL-01 and there are currently toys of the models XL-01, XL-02, XL-07 and XL-15. Also, for the way they all looks, they kinda reminds of the spacecrafts from the old videogame Gradius, espacially the XL-07, that look a lot like the Vic Viper
The spiked hairpiece might not be the most accurate style for Buzz, but honestly I’m just happy to get that hairpiece in dark brown in a regular retail set. Previously it was exclusive to a Team GB minifigure, and was ridiculously expensive to get secondhand.
If it goes on sale, I’ll definitely get a couple. This is a price to part/size that I can understand, whereas I’m still very skeptical of the latest Star Wars sets
One of the most groundbreaking people in British tv sci-fi shows with "supermarionation"was Gerry Anderson(there would be no Team America: World Police without his shows). One of his shows was Fireball XL 5....
This set is pretty good. I’m probably gonna get it not because it’s a licensed set, but because I actually like the spaceship & it could very easily stand on its own & you wouldn’t know it’s from this movie.
Have it, love it! I'm a Star wars-guy, but i really really like this set. The colours, shaping and techniques used is really amazing! Highly recommended!!!
Hey Jang! I just wanted to say, a year on, I bought this set based on your recommendation! I did watch the Lightyear movie, which I liked. But mostly I bought this set based on your review, and I'm happy to say that I regret nothing! Mostly I stick to Star Wars Lego, but I love the classic space vibes of this set, as well as the unique pieces and cool building techniques! Oh, and the color scheme! This is one that I'm still happy is part of my collection, and I don't think that's gonna change! Thanks for your review!
Hey thanks for the review! Always nice to be up to speed with what lego is doing currently. I agree that it's a great set, but my money goes to the White Dragon Horse Jet Monkie Kid set.
I love this model, for 2 reasons! 1. Buzz Lightyear always was my favourite Disney character, when I was a kid I had a Lego Toy Story ship, I was happier with that model than with my first PC that arrived the same evening. And 2: that model could be a nice base for an F ZERO machine, like the Blue Falcon or the White Cat!
I absolutely love everything about those 2 trrops, I was telling my friend while building this that I need like 20 of those prints and helmets and armor pieces lol, perfect for sci Fi beyond just light-year.
IVAN tile is likely printed as in some promotional material Buzz can be seen holding the triangular device and, as you know, tiles that figures hold can't have stickers on them. Which I'm super happy about because it means we get an awesome print for an awesome spaceship!
The overall design of the set and frankly the original ship design itself is just amazing. It looks beautiful and would effortlessly blend in with any space sci-fi build you can put it. The color scheme is perfect although I feel like the red stripes are a little too cartoony. Overall I love this set.
Really standard design elements but combined they work really well, especially in the medium of Lego. Also super happy to see the flight yoke as a ball joint, it’s such a small thing but I’ve been putting that in custom builds for a while now and it always works great!
I like the look of this set, and people do say LEGO is getting more expensive, but I'm not bothered by it. This movie was great and I'm buying this set tomorrow.
Finally watched the movie on Disney+, immediately went out and picked up the ship, and it’s honestly one of the best LEGO spaceships ever made. I honestly may incorporate the ship into the theming of the loop coaster.
Such a nice spaceship! It made me think of a design I'd love to see as a Lego set even more, namely the Commander Keen "Bean-with-Bacon" Megarocket. Maybe someone will make a Megarocket rebrickable out of this set.
This set is indeed a good basis for Classic Space build. Thanks for showing it. I wasn't really aware it existed. Also, I like that the print of the cat isn't too specific. You can basically put it into a city just as it is. The color might be a bit strange but there are cats with rare colors out there.
The best non-starwars Star Wars set. Absolutely great ship and super nice figs. But this price tag... 😬 Thank you for the review, I was looking forward to this one.
you are the reviewing voice i respect most. not just with lego, in any catagory. only other person that comes close might be doug demuro. most trustworthy name in reviewing
the triangular piece in the cockpit is an ipad-style AI device that Buzz uses for navigation and stuff like that, so they included it to be movie accurate. people who watched the movie would definitely notice if it was missing
I think this ship is going to sell really well because It looks like a space classic set, a mini ucs and a disney pixar set all in one. It really looks like any spaceship fan is going to love it. I'm gonna buy it and display it with my star wars collection for sure!
Managed to get one of these brand new at half price a month ago, that was a very easy purchase to make since I'd heard it's a great build but too expensive. I wouldn't have paid £45 for it but for £22.50 it was a total no-brainer.
I was hesitated to buy one for myself after some reviews. But after seeing it here, I decided I definitely cannot pass on this. Thank you for the very helpful review.
I like this, it shows awareness on Lego’s part. Legos are already getting expensive and it doesn’t help when Disney comes sliding in looking for their cut for the licensing (lookin at you Star Wars). So to format this set in a more collectible style is what sells it for me.
Glad to see that the trend of $40ish sets is still a thing, I had some big doubts with the state of things lately. The ship is really good, I will nitpick a bit on the nose: not a fan of those sloped grilles piece here and it’s a bit flat on the bottom but displayed the "right" way, it can be minimized if not completely hidden. I also really appreciate the stand since my use of those sets is display. On the Buzz minifig, that collar/shoulder piece and baklava combo looks weird but those helmets on the "bad guys" are awesome. I’ll definitively be on the lookout for this one.
It reminds me of a Vic Fighter. Remember those? 50 bucks is overpriced, but I like it enough to not hate the price. I’d rather buy something for 50 that I really connect with than to get some 30 dollar set I’ll probably sell on eBay in a few years because I maybe didn’t like it that much. I grabbed this one today and can’t wait to build it.
It's so fun watching you get excited about new pieces, new prints, new colors. Even though I only do very few custom builds and have only made a couple dozen bricklink orders for very specific things (mostly for custom minifigures of my friends and pieces for things like kitchen and dining room dioramas for us to hang out in... or cats, I love collecting lions and kitties and such), I love hearing your enthusiasm and knowing that Lego designers care a lot about the MOC community. I'm actually a bit tempted to get this set despite that I never buy military-esque sets just because of the kitty and the kind of nostalgic space feel.
Loved the movie! Just got into LEGO with the Horizon Zero Dawn set, and was looking for my next set, came across with this one, got it in an online store from my country for about 30dls! I'm so excited! Can't wait to build it.
