Lego Issues: 1. Price: a. Lego products are far too expensive for what they deliver. b. There is a distinct trend to issue very expensively licensed products only, which contradicts the original idea that you can build whatever you want or imagine it with Lego bricks. c. Cheap stickers: while the price of their products is exorbitant, they sell them with loads of ugly, cheap and non-lasting sub-par stickers. Even $700+ sets come with them!? d. Many of their products need you to buy additional devices or products to enable you to even play with them. Really? e. You cannot buy the few good sets, except from Lego stores at full price - sometimes. A few retailers get some of the OK sets. However, most retailers do not ever get those. This is costly to you, since you cannot get the better sets at a discount, 2. Compatibility: a. More and more parts that the company issues, are no longer compatible with each other, which is a great shame for creative builders and/or adult fans of Lego. b. There are fewer and fewer “B” models, if any. So even in a model, compatibility and change are discouraged. You build them once and that is that. c. Systems that have been on the market for decades are discontinued for the introduction of new totally incompatible ones: motor connections, train systems, remote control (if any!), base plates to name a few. d. There is a clear tendency to focus on new customers only. AFOLs are basically told to fuck off. Nice. e. Most sets now come with “exclusive” colors, many of which you will never be able to use again. And most sets have weird multi-colour arrangements inside, which will make alternative builds rather difficult. Also, these colors shine through and make the sets look abysmally bad. 3. Quality: a. The color of the parts has not been consistent for some time. Even the very same parts differ in color. b. There are more and more marks showing the injection-moulding, which is just cheap and ugly. c. Some parts come with a matte finish only, which is annoying when all the other parts come with a glossy finish. d. Some products are faulty and/or so very badly designed that they fall apart of flex incredibly. e. Almost every device is still battery operated. There have not been any rechargeable Lego devices on the market for a very long time. f. MOCs are very much encouraged by the absence of good sets. This means that whenever you buy a Lego set, you will have to buy additional parts to make it work or look nice. Thank you very much. g. Some sets are so, so bad that it looks like Lego is trying to explore markets beyond the stupid. The prices are high, quality so poor and the sets so negligible that only morons and/or fanboys will buy them (and sometimes even defend them). 4. Policy: a. Most of the money the company spends, is on licenses, lawyers and marketing. So there is little left for the development of good products, which shows. b. The Lego website or their PR could not be worse: False claims, Fanboy “reviews”, truly ghastly life-style pictures accompanying the sets and many other lies (“false truths”?). What is particularly annoying is the company’s perpetual stress on quality. There really is not much left of that - if any. c. In their futile attempt to keep competitors away, they start - usually futile - litigations everywhere. In their efforts to do so, they estrange whole groups of fans and expose their frailties: “We just want your money. Soon we will run the company into the wall, but we will be richly compensated, so all is well for us”. And for the public? Us? d. And while there are a considerable amount of Lego-sponsored influencers on e.g. RU-vid, the credibility of the company has long gone: it is dead. e. In their desperate attempt to “digitalize” their products, you now need smart phones to play with or get to work many of their sets, which is just a total catastrophe. f. Artificially limiting the production of desirable sets and thereby creating a “run” for them, particularly if they are available at Lego stores only (and very often not even there …) just leaves a lot of customers unhappy. That is just plain stupid. 5. The Competition: a. While Lego has always laughed at competition after they stole “their” idea from an English company, they should have reconsidered that position a long time ago: most of their competitors now offer better, much more sustainable, cheaper and far more exciting products. b. If you buy Lego today, you just have not heard of CADA. Mould King, Blue Brixx, Cobi, Xingbao, Qman, Wange to name but the best. 6. Conclusion: a. Lego is not what it used to be. The company has turned into an ugly faceless money-grabbing and mobbing monster. b. Lego is not dead yet, but it has had that very dead smell for quite some time now. c. If you still think this is a great company, I cannot and will not stop you. However, look around and explore the riches of the whole brick world. d. For me it is “Good-bye to Denmark, and hello to the world.”
