small display models like this are exactly what lego needs to make more of. they're so much better for adult collectors than the £600 behemoths you can't display easily
I dont mind at all paying 600 for a lego set(in my country those 600 are more like 7000) but the size is a huge factor, I literally have no space to display them all haha
I agree with both comments, but I’ll still get that UCS Venator if really comes out! Last UCS-set I built was the Sandcrawler from 2014 so it’s been a while. Still kinda bummed out I missed Slave-1…
Yeah I’d totally dive into UCS sets but space is a factor. I’ve got the Space Shuttle Discovery from 2021, which could be thought of as an IRL UCS set, but that’s pushing it.
I don't think you are in the wrong for saying this is overpriced. This along with the series of helmets has pushed the pricing limits for displayable type sets. Yes this is a really well done set and there are those that would pay the price. However, if there were no gifts with purchase or 2x VIP points to go along with the set, I don't think it would have sold out as fast as it did.
Still sold out everywhere (ie Target, BestBuy, Wal-Mart, not on Amazon, etc) Oh- and ALL Lego sets are overpriced, Jang. You're not wrong in your price assessment!
I was a huge Lego kid growing up and still own quite a bit, but as an adult who now is beginning to pay their own way in life, it is WILD how expensive Lego is. And this is coming from a guy who once used price to part ratios and price to volume ratios to shut down any notion that Lego was overpriced as a teenager. Don't get me wrong, this is a cool model and as much as the building experience is lovely with this medium, I sometimes do really struggle to see the value in Lego adult oriented display models. The fact of the matter is that these are expensive toys with a premium price, which you mostly just look at instead of play with as an adult. If you love the stuff, that's fantastic, but I do get frustrated with people who refuse to hear anything about Lego being overpriced, it has always been expensive, but it has gotten pretty ridiculous over the last few years.
I'd love to see a Mon Calamari Cruiser done in Lego, this midi scale series would be a perfect place for it. Actually, I think most of Star Wars capital ships would fit great in this. I also kinda hope they may change their minds and re-release Nebulon B, like they did a second run of Saturn V rocket.
@@emiliskog Depending on which figures you believe, it would be about 9 meters in diameter (30 feet for Americans) - or if you go with the larger published size for the Executor, the DS2 would be around 3.6 meters/12 feet, - so yeah, just a bit larger! 😀 Hate to think what Lego would charge for something like that!
This is no joke one of the nicest lego sets I have ever had the pleasure to build. And I didn't find the price as exorbitant as other Star Wars 18+ sets, like the diarama sets. This really felt like expert level design at an affordable cost, and makes for a great display piece even if you don't have much room.
This one is a tough one cos it does look awesome and it's a much more affordable and space friendly variant of the ship. But agreed, it's still too expensive; even more awkward is that it's retailing at around the same price as the TIE Bomber, which is now starting to see discounts, as the hype and excitement has died down. You mentioned cashback, agreed it's a decent way to cushion the blow of these costly sets nowadays; assuming it is successful, I should have the TIE Bomber at 55% off, but only if it works out.
This set sold out so fast because LEGO either significantly underestimated demand and didn’t produce enough, or because they gave too many to Walmart as an exclusive. A set selling out is not always indicative purely of popularity. My store got like 12 of this set for launch day. We got 80 Endor heroes brickheadz. We got 26 UCS X-Wings.
This set was a huge part of my may the 4th promo plan, Was out of stock in 10 mins on the lego australia page. I don't really like starwars anymore, It's gotten pretty awful, I Don't think i like lego starwars anymore either. This is one of the best sets of the year. That's pretty sad.
The scale of the mini stardestroyers is actualy spot on, a stardestroyer is 1 mile, the super is a bit under 12 miles, the model does 5-ish studs for the smal and 56-ish for the super, thats not bad at all.
Hope they continue this line of ship models, I can think of so many great things they could do with this scale. My dream would be a Lucrehulk. Thanks for the independent review, Jang! Trust your reviews and overall perspective on LEGO more than any other.
Totally agree with you on this! A whole line of capitol ships at this scale would be awesome. A Venator, a Profundity, Hammerhead Corvette. This is a potential line they can do a lot with.
I've never bought a UCS set because they're just too big for my NYC apartment. It'd be great to have smaller sized capital ships to display with my minifig scale fighters. This is overpriced but I'm more willing to pay it over the outrageous dioramas. It was sold out when I woke up so no GWP for me, would have liked the Death Star II as well.
Definitely agree with you towards the end. My favorite ship type is the Venator, but I just don’t think I can afford the UCS one that’s rumored/upcoming. I’d love one at this size, maybe with a simplified Captain Rex from the UCS one, but not required.
Agree 100% that mid scale is the future. I am crushed that they messed up the Nebulon B release as that's one of my all time favourites and I'd love to have one. But I agree the Venator should be next, maybe paired with Invisible Hand. This would even be a way to revive sequel trilogy sets. Thanks as always for the review.
Agree with you on the comparison with the UCS. I would get this if it included a Captain/Admiral Piett. Because this is a set that I could see myself be interested in. This despite likewise owning the UCS. I bought the UCS when I still refused to buy Lego, but considered a one off (which it was for a couple of years). It basically made clear to me that I don't like UCS sets: too big and often not mini-fig compatable. It's impressive on the shelf, and that's all it is. This smaller size is something I could definitely see myself getting and then selling the UCS. But then I'd no longer have a Piett...
hmm, they are popular but not really my thing, nor is the behemoth behind you, I like sets a little larger like the 75055. Larger than this, but smaller than the UCS (which I do like, but as exceptional models not the norm). I'm looking forward to the Venator but extremely disappointed they went with something so large and pricey.
Star Wars sets in general are poor in terms of value so this set at $70 sounds like a steal. I just got this as I plan to collect all ships from this series with the upcoming millennium falcon and others. It’s still much better than the helmets IMO, but really these should be priced at around the $50 mark.
It is a really nice model for its size. At $70 it's probably over-priced, but it's more affordable than the UCS set when it was new, and especially now. I'm not a big fan of the price but I'll eat it haha. This will be the first LEGO Star Wars set I get. I usually don't like mixing the two, but this is my favorite Star Wars capital ship, and it has so few toys, models, and miniatures, as it is, and this is a great representation. Plus, I feel the Star Wars sets have really come into form lately. I might get some more, haha. The Star Wars Technical Commentaries put this ship at around 17 km, through photogrammetry and various methods. Official length is listed as 19 km. Pablo Hidalgo went and measured the actual filming model and the small Star Destroyer model that was built to the same scale, and the ship came out to 13 km. When it was on public display, ILM had an info card in front of it that flatly stated Executor was 18 km. Either way, IT'S BIG, haha! So, I'm not sure how scale or un-scale those Star Destroyers are, but, they are decently small enough to get the size of Executor across, and it is nice to have them included. The ship is not actually light gray like the Star Destroyers (some say they are white.) It is more of a bluish-greenish-gray. ILM simply called it "the blue Star Destroyer." But I have no idea what the heck color LEGO would've used for this, so this will have to suffice. I agree they need to make more ships in this size and form factor. Finally make some Mon Calamari ships! I know their curvy shapes are not very LEGO-friendly, but I think it could be managed now, with all the curved elements LEGO has now. I knew the set sold out the same day, didn't know it was within a couple hours! It's still temporarily out of stock on the website, but my local LEGO store has it. I could get it from Walmart, but then I won't get the VIP points! Great review as always, JANG! Thanks!
Star destroyers are my favorite Star Wars ships, and I was looking forward to buying this set when it was announced since I like the scale and all, but the price really turned me off tbh. I know it's delusional, but I would have paid 50 for that... Still great review (as always), have a good one ^^
I have calculated it based on what i see in this video, and considering the length of the Executor in-universe of 19km and the length of the model of 44cm, and the length of the ISD of 1.6km, it should have the length of the model of around 3.7cm, which is pretty close to the length of it in this set, considering that 1x1 brick is 8x8mm. So it seems to be scaled pretty well. Correct me if i'm wrong.
I personally like the mix between the smaller more affordable display models and the larger UCS sets. On one hand I love the UCS sets because I love the larger, more complex builds that take a weekend to complete. Gives me something to keep me busy for a while and an opportunity to catch up on some podcasts! On the other hand, the dioramas and mini models like this are much more display space friendly
@@timewarpdrive77 huh? So if it had figures it would suddenly be affordable? Make it make sense. I’m also talking from the perspective of buying a smaller $70 SSD is way more affordable than spending $400 on the original UCS one, hence why I said “MORE affordable.” Maybe read the entirety of what I wrote next time.
Just got mine yesterday. I'm in love. This and the Nebulon B are amazing little models, I hope they keep making more. I've always loved micro scale Star Wars Lego models
I preordered this one immediately. 2 weeks later I got an email saying it was sold out. Mine got shipped on time though. I agree that it is overpriced but I was afraid it would be limited like the Nebulon B. I think $55 feels about right. I'd love a Tantive IV, a standard Star Destroyer & more!
I’m glad they’re making sets in these scale, but i can’t justify the price in my mind. I hope they do the droid control ship, and the supremacy and dreadnought from the last Jedi
I would love a mirror of this set as Home One with a micro Corellian Corvette and a Nebulon Frigate. I also agree an entire line of midi scale Star Wars would be great. I was so excited with the first two sets of the original line, so disappointed they were the last two sets.
I always thought it was pronounced like Executioner (someone who executes people) rather than like executive. Makes it sound like its the imperial Human Resources & Admin ship 😂
Even as someone lucky enough to get a Nebulon B when they were released, I hope they re-release so others can get and enjoy it as well, it's a great set. And I hope they continue to make display/collector sets this size! I barely managed, after at least an hour and half, to order my Executor on May 1. It is on backorder, but at least I got it in...
It can be argued that this is overpriced. I'm just keeping in mind that it's very likely if Lego produces more midi-scale ships of any variety, they will likely replace the helmet sets, which were also more or less overpriced. I would say if Lego were to bring down the prices on midi-scales as a series, they'd probably still charge at least 60$ unless sales drop. It would be interesting if Lego went a different route and used different IPs for midi-scale sets just as they did with helmets, something like the GWP "midi-scale" 40334 Avengers Tower, or at least ships from different franchises
Yea, you're not wrong in saying it's overpriced. Last year, LEGO announced a 20%+ increase in pricing. The Throne Room for $100 should be $75. The Endor Speeder chase, $50. This product imo should be $50-$60 max. If you can wait a year or even until Black Friday and find sales, they'll be cheaper.
I had completely forgotten this was going to be $70...I thought it was going to be $40. The price of the adult collectors lines are pretty out of control in my view: there's no way these 600 small parts are so expensive to produce that it needs to be $70. It's a shame, as I was very excited for this set and more in a series like this. But not at this price point.
I just want to say that it’s incredibly admirable that you voice your personal opinion about it being over priced but then use sales data / facts to counter your own opinion and admit you may be wrong. I bought this set and do think it’s $15-$20 overpriced, but as someone who owns the Nebulon-B frigate “midi-scale” set I absolutely had to have this to match - and I have no regrets! Both sets were phenomenal to build and display 😁
I doubt this will restock anytime soon. No one seems to say it, but there are still stock shortages of LEGO and other retail items in general, in certain parts of the USA. I’m not silly enough to pay 50 bucks above retail price to get it.
The day Lego makes studless wedge plates all moc builders (especially Star Wars nerds) will collectively lose their minds. Until then, this is a pretty good approximation of what a nearly studless star destroyer would look like.
Releasing new sets on their May Star Wars promotion is 100% stupid. They know what's going to happen every single year but they continue to mess it up.
Things like this and the Dioramas have horrible price to part ratio as well as price to size ratio. Though there is an art to making stuff at these scales and creating the very minute detailing. I personally would say 65 dollars would be a more fair price point for the set.
give me all the SW OT capital ships at this scale and I’ll buy all of them. Also count Tantive IV even though its relatively small - blow it up to this size.
This set didn't really interest me based on the promotional images and the weird scale. But seeing it up close in your review I'm totally sold on it now.
Yeah, I missed out on this one. I was still able to stack some other Star Wars sets to get my gwp's. They should at least put it on back order before the end of the promo. I hope.
Haven't bought a set in a long time until this came along it was an absolute must buy its one of my favourite sets, as its on display in the living room. 😊 Bigger isn't always better.
Something I really appreciate about this review (haven’t looked specifically for this in other reviews) is how Jang aligned the ingot pieces in a way that the mold mark is symmetrical. I do the same thing when I build and it’s good to know I’m not alone
The plaque on this would look better if it used the same part as the helmets. The only other area I really don’t like is the nose, although I agree there’s nothing else they could do with existing parts to fix it. That said, none of that stopped me buying it
i wish cant wait till it retires after being sold out every time i check, and even when i got the restock email it was out of stock we i opened it, it was only an hour or so after it was delivered 😤
I actually picked this up myself because of how sleek it looks, I love big to scale ships and it's got a lot going on that just does it for me. I absolutely agree that 70 is far too high but I don't know, after it was finished, I didn't feel that bad about it
