For those curious, you can call lego (or chat) and request specific bags from sets. They must be non licensed sets but customer service will get the parts from the bags and ship out the pieces. I just ordered a second middle floor (bags 7, 8, 9) and it was just under the $100 mark. Probably could have saved more if I wanted to look through my parts and go a bit slower. Thank you Robin for the tip (and XLM list). So many things learned from this channel that improves my Lego hobby!

For me personally, the placement in the thumbnail by the airport, looks the best - you get to see the amazing detail of both builds clearly. The builds do look awful from the back, but maybe you could add a giant 3D sign to advertise the supermarket using the left over pieces of food ? Or even create a wall full of many different adverts (kinda of like buildings in Times Square / buildings in Blade Runner). Good stuff overall.

The supermarket's location near the airport is pretty much perfect, in my opinion. You can see the corner at its greatest. And, the ugly wall facing the tram is actually quite realistic, as you typically find less ideal backsides facing rail lines. The Boutique Hotel's location is okay, but I liked the original location with the prominent turret at the corner more. Usually, you don't find those type of buildings near an airport. But overall, I think these two still look very nice together!

Personally I really prefer the placement near the tram line. It perfectly works out with the airport and I think you can fix the problem with the other side!😉 The second option also looks good, but the view from the standing hole behind them wasn't that good🤷‍♂️

I like the idea of mirroring the hotel and using configuration #2. *Then* changing the back of the supermarket to include windows and make it a "nice" side on its own. You probably can't do too much where the stairs are, but you can build out that "notch" in the corner. It's a lot of work but it would look good.

I think doing a mirror build of the Boutique Hotel would allow you to hide the ugly wall and keep the same placement near the airport. And you could put some advertisement on the other building walls

I like the location of the buildings near the airport. Ideas for the back blank wall: I would put something like street art or a big mural on the back of one of them to give the back some colour like they do here in Melbourne for the housing commission (you can search it up). If you want to make the mural even more interesting, you could make it so there is only half a mural on the wall and it is currently getting finished by the painters who are dangling from ropes from the top of the building - nearly missing the tram! Just an idea :)

I like the construction site spot the most personally. I think that what would fit the walls the most is custom built (perhaps dots) graffiti, since it is near the rails. Fire escapes would also fit in quite well I believe. Good Luck

Hi, Robin. I´ve a suggestion for the Supermarket and the Hotel placement. Keep them close to the airport, but instead of pushing them 1 stud forward, push them 3 or 4 studs. This allows enough room for the foundations of some sort of upper deck or promenade that will connect the backs of the Palace Cinema and the Corner Supermarket. Under this deck/promenade it will be a tunnel for the trains. In the top, it will be a platform for the tram/monorail, and some sort of pedestrian street, that could host a kiosk, a cafe-bar, candy stroll, or just some trees and benches that would conceal the backs of the modular buildings. This promenade could go until the back of the hotel for a larger space. I know one of your lego rules is to have different heights, and this definitely will go that direction. It may also allow for an extra way of crossing the rails, as it could have stairs on both ends. Another of your lego rules is density, and here again, I believe this could help. Keep the great job! PS: I´ve use this solution in my own lego city. Is there any mail where I could share you some pictures?

Complex video, Lego's not always about construction ! Option 1 : nah. Option 2 : like for option 3, I really like how the 45° walls of the 2 Modulars matchs with the other. Flipping the Boutique Hotel will break that matching and i don't think it will work. One (hard) thing you can do with option 2 is guillotine those blanks walls to be able to view inside and create more scenes inside buildings. (The supermarket will be cut just inside the refrigerators line. In my mind, it's already funny.) But cutting these walls is a while another project on it's own... Option 3 : Nice view from Standing Hole n°2, but those blank walls are really giant... The supermarket corner almost feels too tall. But, on this place, nice backstory for Brick Nottingham, as the back wall of the Supermarket is face-to-face to the back wall of the Cinema, it's like a building has been destroyed long time ago between to two buildings to let pass the railway and the tramline. I like how the tramline vanish behind the Supermarket from Standing Hole n°2. With these new buildings and the new cargo corner project (really liked the mini-fort !), it's been a long time that we have not seen the city landscape change so much, I like it ! Keep up the good work !

i think placing both the modulars bye the airport is your best bet. Perhaps you could cover the back walls with vines and signs, and maybe even replace the tan tiles on the supermarket/vet modular. But yeah I agree with most of the other comments saying you should leave them by the airport
@lifeoutdoorseveryday1682

1. I think the current placement is the best for both buildings. 2. When you move all of the bricks on the base plate forward, make sure you leave enough space for anything added to the rear of the buildings as well (ie: vines, signs, etc.) 3. I suggest additional windows to break-up the plain backings of the buildings. 4. I urge you to follow your concept of open-backed buildings around your standing hole (ie: your project that you haven't told us about yet, now that it is likely that is where it will end up.) The additional floor of the hotel really makes it look stunning.
@benrobinson6683

I think that they do look best next to the airport and I like your idea for some 3D signs, but to avoid going overboard, perhaps you could have a go at an ornate Victorian-styled viaduct, holding up the monorail (one that would've held trains but is now converted). In Manchester, we have a lot of old railway bridges, now used for the trams. That would cover up the first couple of floors. Additionally, you could add another storey to the Cinema to potentially block the majority of the back of the hotel, but I'm not sure to what extent that could help or if it would create more problems than it solves. Whatever solution you decide to take, I'm sure you'll do it well as always.
@nickkoehl3690
@nickkoehl3690 2 года назад
The placement nearest the monorail is best. An advertisement on the back of the MOC would definitely help but, have you tried rotating the boutique hotel 90 degrees so the back faces the airport? Just to see how that looks…

i like them best in that final location (option 3). They do need something to decorate those back walls tho. A fancy 3D sign on the supermarket building, and a vine of flowers on the boutique hotel would make sense.
@gordonwerner
@gordonwerner 2 года назад
These two buildings will always be a problem unless you place them in the far right corner replacing your department store/casino - that way you can only ever see the “good sides”. Other than that, change the color of the inside pieces so the exterior exposed walls have consistent coloring. As for the modular you’re designing- it’s much easier to modify or mirror a virtual build than one already built.

Robins the green goblin? That's green goblins glider from Spider-man (2002) it appeared recently in Spider-man no way home (2021). Those pieces may go up in price. From what I can see from the thumbnail the placement looks great. you could add some buildboards on the back of the buildings maybe a hotel sign maybe a grocery store or a sign for something different completely maybe something that represents the deep sea cabinet.

I like the apple theft scene. I like the combination of the hotel with the diagonal of the supermarket- it has an interesting flow visually. Maybe some of the back walls could be modified to have graffiti type murals like the mario one if over by the rail and airport. The older style of the two buildings fit well with the nearby old town Diagon alley type area. Or maybe lean into making them look like they used to have more building they were connected to that was torn out to make way for the tram. Would moving the buildings further forward to the street to reduce the sidewalk free up enough space in the back tram side of that area to put some kind of back alley type stuff or enough space to do something more interesting with the back area. Maybe a little Sesame street scene with Oscar? Or some chainlink/wooden picket fence to have a police/superhero type chase scene. I doubt the interiors would cooperate but with a few more studs space we may be able to build a similar in style facade to go on the back of those buildings to make it look more like they don't have unfinished sides. One fairly space efficient way would to simulate carved stone type images with plates. One of the local older buildings has a carved mural of a farmer scything wheat on it. Or we could have construction workers on the back side doing building restoration which could tie nicely with the other construction in the corner. Maybe with tarped off scaffolding so it looks like they need to protect what they are working on except where we put intentional breaks to sell the look/scene.

Sometimes in these situations in real life you see interesting vertical impressions of old buildings in the form of just walls. Such as the old buildings around the Nottingham Station before they developed the area. You could buy brick style profile bricks and make 2 tall thin facades to hid your ugly sides and place adverts on the brick walls. This solves your problem and makes an interesting space saving feature
@alexandre.o.branco
@alexandre.o.branco 2 года назад
Hi Robin, welcome to the dilemma of high density… I think the 3rd option is the worst - who wants a boutique hotel facing an airport entrance and tarmac? As yup pointed out it also hides lots of interesting scenes. A mix of option 1 and 2 could work if you are willing to bring the police station to the equation and replace it by the boutique hotel. Across the street, place the market facing the room entrance and next to it the police station. To solve the dilemma of the ugly back you could open up the back of the station, like the hospital and other buildings facing the 2nd hole (I did it with mine and it looks great, a bit of a complication for the stairs though but got rid of them altogether)
@chrischristiansen6204
@chrischristiansen6204 2 года назад
That's a very good point. If the wall on the standing hole is the only problem visually- just removing it and making the interior more visible is a great idea. Maybe that bit of extra rail to finish the roof will be coming back off. ;p

Hi there, firstly I think the added floor makes all the difference. So much better. Secondly I think the second position near the airport looks best. Plus the elevated train helps block some of the back view. I think a 3D sign on the corner grocer and maybe a big picture/billboard on the hotel or some vines would look really great. Thanks for the enjoyable video!

I do also prefer the placement near the airport. As having 2 major rail lines so close from, a pedestrian alley, high valued appartments and an hotel is not so genuine, you may cover them by a tunnel with a building over it.

Hey Robin. The hotel looks awesome with its additional floor. The supermarket also looks awesome. For positioning the supermarket I wondered if you could change the road layout to suite the placement of both buildings? Keep the Hotel where it is at 9:16 of the video. The T junction with its back to the bus should be where you put the supermarket but facing the standing hole. The T junction to its right that we can barely see, turn it 90° anti clockwise so you have to turn left or right once passed the hotel (when it's on your left) Then basically with the hotel and supermarket on a diagonal to each other with a road between them, you will see the supermarket in its full glory from the standing hole. A new road leading into the cupboard door and if you use a corner piece of road next to the hotel and the standing hole, you'll have a small space for another moc to hide the ugly wall. Your building site can stay intact waiting for your custom double modular. I hope that makes sense. I understand if you don't want to lose a nice long straight road for more modular buildings. My wife and I don't think they work next to the airport. Good luck Trevor and Katie
@chrischristiansen6204
@chrischristiansen6204 2 года назад
I think its worth taking a look at. Breaking up the regularity of the roadways a bit could be a good look- maybe the lanes coming up to the intrusion instead are a one way that turns into and out of the wall cutoff to merge back into the current road. If the turn is built over the road plate, putting one more plate height up at the wall edge could sell the illusion that there is an incline in that direction.
@chrislawmon9823
@chrislawmon9823 2 года назад
I think the location by the airport is definately the better option! Now that area is more built-up, and less rural, it would make more sense to leave it on a grey base and just change the road to match. As for the rear of the builds, could you do something radical like extend the windows around to the monorail side too? At least on the top floor(s). It would be better to push the problem to the interiors which will rarely be seen, if it can make the exteriors look great..?

I think the Boutique Hotel is best placed where the current Police Station is, which allow all 3 sides of the building nicely displayed. Supermarket can be placed beside the Hospital as you originally planned, though you might need to swap out all the side windows of the Hospital as they will be touching the wall of the Supermarket. The Police Station could be placed beside the Supermarket. Still leaving you 2 prime spots at the construction site where you can place some MOC that blend in better with the surrounding.

Great video and nice thought piece! We suggest option #3 is the absolute best to make your creations show off the most. The perilously close tram will be perfect. How about adapting the great big blob of brown? Some adverts will be good, but why not go further? On the corner supermarket could you add some windows on the top levels? 🪟 A large advert across two or three floors would also be great - maybe even something temporary looking promoting the travelling fairground? Alternatively - is there anything like a bridge or tunnel feature that could cross over the tram & train lines? Or maybe even something like a transparent sky pool out the back of the Boutique hotel? Regardless some brilliant additions to your city - great work.
@chrischristiansen6204
@chrischristiansen6204 2 года назад
For the sky pool do you mean something like a pool replacing the skylight- but making it transparent at the bottom like a glass ceiling? On the topic of temporary adverts I wonder if any of the cloth like lego parts used for sails have an emblem or something that could be worked up as though it is an advert for something- that could be a cool texture contrast. I agree that with the tall building right there it would be a shame not to have something going over the tram line even if its just one of those clear sticks with a bird or a clothesline (which could be a cool prop for a scene) going over the gap. Maybe a 'broken' clothesline where a wrestler was trying to sneak in or out of the fight across the gap and fell into a mismatched bit of clothing like a skirt/dress type thing like they would have happen in the old cartoons. Or a squirle running across it could also be cool. I think there was a holiday type set that had a piece that was a string with studs along it that could work well.
@andrewfield176

@@chrischristiansen6204 For the sky pool I mean a transparent box that forms a bridge between two buildings. Great further ideas though!

Second position near the airport seems good. If you're worried about the back of the convenience shop building, it would be good cool to build another tall building on the other side of the monorail, where the train disapears between the tall buildings. It would hide the huge backwall. Second possibility, add windows! Do you remember the scene in The Prisonner of Azkaban (14m57s mark) where the train passes Harry's bedroom? That.
@jaihmate4236
@jaihmate4236 2 года назад
Two other options, keep them on the construction site but swap the two around, this gives the tram line more room around the corner as it curve over the art gallery and also puts the ugly wall against one ugly wall of the supermarket. Option two, supermarket right next to the hospital and then mirror the boutique hotel and place next to that. Lots of work for that one though, good luck

I can remember me sleeping in a hotel having train tracks in its backyard. Was not really fun with the ultra long cargo trains passing by all night. Hey Robin, great job with the 2 buildings as usual. I prefer option 3 but only because I’ve not seen your other MOC. Since you have 6-7 studs in front of the 2 buildings, maybe you can move them all the way. This will give you 5-6 studs worth of free space. Then for the hotel, you can recreate the facade on the fourth side (some buildings do faux windows just to make the building look good all around). Then for the supermrket, you can put door on each floor and make a balcony. you can even add more windows…basically making both buildings look good on all sides. Or an artist painting a mural on the back…😊

Making a mural/large advertisement could be done in a couple ways. Maybe full brick built like the Mario one- or it could be done with those Dots and tiles kind of like for the Robin 'painting'. One of our local buildings has an old faded single color advertisement painted on it from like the 50's. Maybe some plates could be worked into letter like shapes on those walls to make it look like there was something painted there that has partially worn away?

These two buildings look fantastic next to each other. I like the location by the airport the best. A few ideas I had was maybe add some windows to the back side of the buildings of possible. Like the supermarket building. If you could use some jumper plates to recess the window frames in a half a stud to give it some texture. Or even add some walk out balconies for the levels above where the tram goes. Then foe the bouquet hotel add windows to the back also if feasible. So that way it looks more appealing. I know this would be a huge job, but it would be worth the curb appeal in the end. Then for that small area between the hotel and the supermarket if you could extend that area between the buildings and make it a outdoor café. I couldn't tell if the plate level extended out between them. I have noticed Lego has changed the bricks and pieces here in the states. Now you can't see every part that was in the set. And even if you look the design number up some say their not found. This really makes things harder now to find the parts from sets I want. Have you notice they changed it there in the UK? Excellent video as always my friend. Keep up the amazing work.

I would keep your boutique hotel where it was at the corner because it looks nicest there and put your grocery at the corner by the tram. I’d keep that hole empty by the airport for something else. As for the back of the garage, I’d make a multi story mural! They are very popular in big cities. There’s one in Detroit of the back of one building that is a whale. You could do a mural of Robin! Or, if you ever wanted to relocate your Mario mural you could move it up there!

For the corner supermarket, you could remove the solid walls and add windows (like the other side) to the upper floors, allowing you to remove some of the ugly walls and peer into any potential future scenes. Would have to make more bricklink orders though...

Having the buildings backs facing the monorail/train line would be accurate to cities having the ugly backs facing the lines, you could plaster the backs with billboards and perhaps graffiti as well

I think the location by the airport looks best! As far as the blank walls, your mural or advertisement ideas would work well. OR you could build an elevated park or connecting building that butts up to the corner garage's back and is supported down between the monorail and train track. It'd be cool if the monorail went through such a building, like the metro station in Chongchig does, but I don't think your monorail is high enough for that.

I want to get the hotel and do position 2 with my garage. They really look well next to each other like that, and the curve of the hotel compliments the garage. IMO the ugly walls are fine bc it is supposed to be a guillotine anyway and I imagine that the guillotine chopped off the other buildings that are there. It actually makes the illusion better

Move the supermarket & hotel FOUR studs forwards. Then you'd have room to add a fake rear wall to the modulars with (say) bricked -up windows, some guttering and exposed plumbing and so on.

On the construction site is the best location. Maybe you try the boutique hotel mirror build…just to see how it looks :) Love the tram going in-between the tall buildings.

Hmmm, your arguments for an additional flesh floor on the hotel is compelling. May be a project for me further down the line; the idea of asking them to send out extra bags is a great idea though and I may look into that. Right now, though, I'm awaiting a delivery from Lego for parts to complete a 4554-inspired train station on a baseplate-and-a-half modular compatible format. Quite excited; especially because it's the first build I've created entirely in Studio first.

I like them by the tram station. They look really good. I agree, they could have some vines’ and advertisements on the back which would be great, it that one stud replacement will work, you might need two studs.

Think I like the 2nd placement over near the Ferrari Tower, but maybe you could add windows to the ugly backs to carry the detail around the back rather than just adding billboards? the hotel would defiantly look good with the green roof and windows carried around all sides of it.

Love the extra floor on the hotel! Personally I would put the hotel in its original place with the grand emporium next to it and the supermarket in the grand emporiums old spot but that’s just me. Another amazing video, thank you Robin!

On the supermarket you could put some windows on the tram-side on the uppermost two floors. Even one window on the near corner on each - I think that would make a huge difference. The lower three floors having an ugly side facing the tramline seems true-to-life. With the Hotel then, I don't think there's any 'fixing' the ugly side - butting it up against another building is the way to go. Perhaps mirror build and butt the ugly side against the supermarket? Leaves the turret/doorway where they are but you'd lose the gallery to the back. Or perhaps leave it in it's original location and build something else against it.

I just Love the supermarket all the details are amazing and the extra storey on the hotel. Where you have them beside the airport is great can you move them forward as has been suggested and put up a facade behind the garage that would be another creative project or what about a mosaic maybe another Robin face or full length Robin ! 🤩

Looks awesome! I think it should go near the row with the alien tower. It could also go near the airport too. You could also add in the banana guy & watermelon guy from the Lego blind bag series. They could be selling bananas or watermelons out in front or just doing some ads for the store. Great job! :D

Hi Robin :-) The final placement is the best - perhaps you could consider removing the 4th floor of the supermarket building to make it the same height as the hotel, but even more important, to heavily reduce the amount of "ugly wall" on the back side..? Great fun as always to follow your city's development :-D
@TASmith10

I like them by the airport. But this does raise the question what will you put in that first place, across from the news building? Two points - first of all, a large plain boring wall is also a problem in real cities. The answer, of course, is large billboards and murals. You could do that in Lego. Another option - which you've already done for your mocs, like your hospital, is to simply remove a large, boring wall and allow a cross section view from the back of what's inside. You can do that to a modular if needed.

I know it's a year old vid, but my toughts would be blocking the themepark a bit that you can allmost have the best view of the buildings from all holes. so in sec 10:52 of the vid from the london bus to the supermarket. that way the ugly back is to the themepark and not visible from any holes.

I like by the airport, but instead of billboards, continue the windows around the empty backsides. I think both of those buildings would look great without an empty side. As for previous corner, I think you want buildings with open backs for the standing hole.

Robin, why not put the ugly, back walls of both the Boutique Hotel and the Corner Supermarket up against the closet door? That would effectively hide both those ugly sides against a "wall", and have the pretty sides of both buildings facing the bulk of the Lego room. As a consequence, you'd need to slightly reconfigure the street, but it's worth trying, at least, even without the street plates present.

Of the options I prefer near the airport with billboards on the back over looking the various train and tram lines. Have you considered moving the hospital to the original placement idea of the two buildings - as you can see the scenes from the back anyway - and seeing what the two modular look like where the hospital currently is? You should be able to hide at least one back that way.

Definitely the second location! The monorail works to disguise the first/second floors as well, so they feel less dominating there. Would it be impossible to continue the windows of the green floor around that side as well? It would be nice for hotel rooms to look over the monorail! And very realistic

One admittedly quite drastic idea I have is this: where the supermarket and boutique were originally placed, is there any way you can narrow the road (or even make the road one way/single lane) so that there's enough space across the way, against the wall, to fit them in ? This would take a good bit of work and throw the look of the standard road off, which is probably not something you want to do. Alternatively, could you play around with the layout of the roads so that it looks like it turns left just after the original spot for the boutique hotel and have the supermarket on the opposite corner of the turning. These are just rough ideas so I don't really expect you to go with them. Just a thought though.
