I love the pause. It feels like he dropped it fully expecting it to just roll or something, and was legitimately frozen in shock for a moment

Thats why I love stage props, they probably already knew that the legos wouldn't fall apart how they wanted them to so they engineered the legos to fall apart in a more exaggerated way, and only for 1 scene. Gotta love film making.

You can actually see it as multiple takes. The first one the Death Star rolls off and at 0:05 it falls straight down. As someone who had dropped a lot of Lego’s they definitely loosened a lot of pieces for it to separate like that, and probably added more in the design.

Peter was supposed to help Ned make the bones of the Lego Death Star; so in the absence of Peter’s help, Ned’s Death Star had incomplete structural integrity.

At Bricks LA, there was a panel from some builders who worked with Marvel to make a special modified Lego Death Star prop to fall apart like that when Ned drops it.

It pained me so much to see a set I always wanted as a kid dropped in the movie, and then you did it in real life lol

When it's too broken to reassemble but not broken enough to easily take the pieces apart to start from scratch.

Actually I don't get why he says "oh it does." When Ned does it, it seems like the set more "liquidates" with pieces scattering all over, but when he does it, it bounces and just some large chunks break off.

I don't think so, yours still had parts connected maintaining the shape a little bit while the movie one completely collapsed.

What I've learned from movie props, is how they tend to be way... different from their actual counterparts, like for example there are paperbags that don't make as much sound, bug props that are literal food items that are made to look like bugs, so on and so fourth. So I guess they made a Lego prop that isn't as fortified as the real thing.

I like to imagine this scene was re-shot like 7 times and they hired a crew of insanely dedicated lego fans who memorized every piece of this model to reconstruct it at breakneck speeds between each shoot like a NASCAR pit crew 😆

I mean, you proved your point, even if required such a horrible sacrifice. His broke into a billion pieces while yours just sort of dismounted here and there.

I feel bad for that one person who took hours to build it, only to see it break after being on camera for not even a second

If hell does exist, it's this, watching a lego death star fall on the floor over and over again. And every time you have to search for the small lego pieces all around the room to build it again, and again, and again...

Reassembling that must be actual torture

It was probably like this, because the writers couldn’t bring themselves to break an actual Lego Death Star. Props to you for having the bravery to do so.

Now, the difference is quite evident. The cumulative structural integrity of conjoined lego pieces should be sufficient enough the hold a considerable amount of said lego pieces interlocked with each other without such disembodiment.

If you wanna get technical, in the movie the Lego Death Star broke into more pieces and barely had any of the already built parts intact while this guy's attempt at recreating it shows us that his Lego Death Star is (kinda) more intact and did not break apart as badly. So in other words, he showed us that the real life version was more durable than his movie counterpart. Though despite this, should still be noted that the it's possible that both the height of the drop and the type of flooring could've played a factor but let's just ignore those 🤣

I have this set. It took me 4 days to complete (not non-stop I still took care of myself). The instructions book is so large it needs a spiral binding. I even had a minor panic when I found out 2 pieces were missing and had to search for replacements. Seeing these two shots back to back hurts

I'm so glad I had left my captions on for literally no reason just to witness the effort put into this whole video

Funfact: Props are often switched out from the real deal for a better quality shot. For example, paper bags are too noisy so they often have cloth ones or modified bags that look real but are less noisy. Id like to imagine they did this practical effect for similar reasoning

To Ned’s defence, he dropped it onto a hard wood floor.

Clearly, Ned really did need Peter’s help to put that together. He must have built it wrong for it to be that fragile.

The funniest thing is that they had to build seven Lego Death Stars since you often have to do multiple takes... and they ended up going through all seven. On the _very last take,_ through sheer dumb luck, it completely fell apart and looked perfect. (Also wouldn't surprise me if it was purposely built slightly janky to make it crumble easier.)

I'm pretty sure he's dropping the wrong death star. The one Ned drops is the 2008 (10188) (which is contradictory to what's said in the movie but that's a different problem). But he has the 2016 version (75159)
