Highlights as Lei Sheng Win's the Men's Individual Foil Gold during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Fencing was included for the first time at the 1896 Games in Athens, and has remained on the Olympic programme since then. The women's fencing competition entered the Games in 1924 in Paris. Today, men and women compete in individual and team events, in which three types of weapon are used: foil, epee and sabre. The foil was, at first, the only weapon used by women, until the 1996 Games in Atlanta, when women's epee was introduced. Women's sabre appeared for the first time on the Olympic programme in Athens in 2004.

Wow, this really takes me back to my days of fencing in highschool, and reminds me just how screwed I was as a right-handed person, haha. It's just numbers, you'll never fence as many left handers as right handers, putting left handers at an advantage to right handers. I even went a few weeks fencing left handed just to see if I could force myself to do it, but it went terribly.
@dudeofvalor9294
@dudeofvalor9294 8 лет назад
I too was for a long time struggling but after a while you find that it is actually not that bad. Wherever they can hit, so can you. The best place I find is under their sword arm. Many lefties seem to leave it unprotected. Then if they can parry in Octave/Seconde you just disengage or break time to get around that. Simple in theory, bloody hard in practice!
@ChompChain
@ChompChain 8 лет назад
Same logic as boxing! Not that left-handedness is inherently superior, but by virtue of there just being less southpaws means you normally have an advantage

I have to fully agree with you on this statement. I'm a fairly new fencer and left handed, when I fence others that are more at my level, especially on sabre, it really throws them off, mainly cause where they have gotten use to making attacks to the unarmed arm is, well, now armed. When I fence those on a much higher level, especially on Epee, it doesn't matter because they posses the skill and knowledge in fencing other left handed fencers. So yes, we only have advantage at lower levels

Yes. But, as stated from Globitsky's book, lefties only have an advantage in beginner/intermediate performance. Most people don't fence enough lefties to realize they're almost the same, with some exceptions in bladework, and as a result, distance and tactics. At the top level, the number of lefties increase due to their experience against righties, so they get farther.

@michwng
@michwng 11 лет назад
You’re right, Extending isAttack. But look at the situation. Also Marching is Attack. Marching without extension by today’s convention is a threatening action, because the attacker is “threatening”, though he “pulled”. Reason=by time the defender attacks into the prep, the attacker’s already lunging at the critical distance. Defender’s almost always counter attacking, since there’s no hesitation by the attacker yet, hence no tempo loss. Sheng did not pull back, it’s withheld.

I fence foil as well and I have fenced many left handed people and let me tell you something, it may not be easy however you can beat them. The skill is what truly matters since all that is needed to beat a lefty is to fake into position four then disengage into position six. You just need to attack your attacks more to the right decisively and its as easy then as getting a point. You can also flick on them as well so you can't say he necessarily has a large advantage.

Why do most fencing guys use their left hand ? is is better than using ones right hand? or are they just left handed?
@cannonhead2
@cannonhead2 10 лет назад
At lower level tournaments, lefties have an advantage because many righties are not as used to having to fence a lefty. It all has to do with where the blade is and where the target area is open. This gives many lefties an edge because they are used to fencing someone with the opposite hand, since they do it all the time, but many righties are not as well adapted. So those who are left handed tend to get further.
