In this video I dive the Leica D-Lux 8 camera, I'll be addressing the most frequently asked questions from my prior review and providing a link to download DNG files so you can explore the image quality yourself.
For those interested in detailed specs, please refer to my prior two-part initial review.
The Leica D-Lux 8 is an exceptional compact camera, reminiscent of the design of the Leica Q3, but with its unique characteristics. Building on the D-Lux 7, this camera introduces a host of new features that set it apart in its class. Equipped with a 17 MP Micro 4/3 sensor, it offers excellent dynamic range and color fidelity.
The versatile lens of the Leica D-Lux 8 provides an impressive range and fast aperture within a compact form factor. While often compared to the Panasonic LX100 II, the D-Lux 8 truly embodies the Leica experience.
As the most affordable Leica camera currently available, the D-Lux 8 stands out, even without all specs officially published. Based on my experience, it's fast, reliable, and performs seamlessly.
The Leica D-Lux 8 might stir some debate, with some embracing it and others having their reservations. However, maintaining the D-Lux 7’s sensor size ensures it remains compact while offering a broad focal range.
Stay tuned until the end of the video to learn how you can download a folder of DNG files from the Leica D-Lux 8 for your personal examination. Please note, these images are not for commercial use or any other purpose without prior consent.

It would be a huge camera. Look at the sigma 18-55 f2.8. While it’s small it doesn’t make a Sony A6700 pocket compact. Another reason why this lens crops into the sensor. Because designing a fast lens that cover the whole sensor would’ve made the camera big. Unless the less would be like a bad apsc with an aperture of f3.5-5.6

I have a dlux 109. Honestly, a camera like this is all you need lol. I have mirrorless cameras and have more fun with my 109 than I do with those. To many people fetishize about lenses, megapixels, sensors, and on and on and on.

I too use a 109 and it is fully capable for my needs. The D-Lux 8 would be even better. I have 2 Lumix full frame cameras and I achieve better results with the 109. Note, I did not say the 109 has better image quality, I take better pictures with the D-Lux. I’ll likely go for the 8.

Great video while keeping it honest.Sad to say i am not impressed with the D-Lux 8 and it's old M43 sensor at 17MP and without sensor IS in the year 2024.We should have gotten at least a 1.5x crop sensor with IS and closer to 40MP,better VF and that would have been a "baby" Q3 with maybe a 28mm or 35mm F/1.8 lens for $3,000 max.This camera is a rebadged LX100 II that's out for 6 years already.I am not a Fuji fanboy but i would pick the X-100 VI over this any day.

Yeah. We could’ve got a bit more here and there. Agreed. The Fuji is a great alternative but no zooming.
@JonRatzlaff
@JonRatzlaff 15 дней назад
No optical zoom sure but the Fuji does crop in on the sensor multiple times for a “digital zoom”. Punching in a few times gives you an equivalent focal length with a comparable resolution. Sure at the “zoomed in” focal length you’re not getting 40mp, but you are getting similar output to the Leica.

Good conclusion. I was blown away by the looks of the D-Lux 8 (who wouldn't be), but since stepping down from cloud 9, I've realised this Leica is not for me. I'm going to stick with Olympus, or OM-System as they're now called, and probably go for the E-P7 which despite not having a viewfinder, is a far better tool than the D-Lux. The E-P7 has a tilting LCD which makes up for the lack of an EVF, unsurpassed 5-axis stabilisation, and of course interchangeable lenses. Having a Ricoh GR(D), I've got so used to working without a viewfinder, so the lack of one really isn't a problem. And of course I still own two E-M1's so if it pours with rain, which it does often here in England, both my E-M1's are weather-sealed.

Check out the DNGs and decide for yourself. I personally liked the image quality. If a camera was great 7 years ago for photo it’s great today as well. That notion that all of the sudden we need to reinvent the wheel with every release is kind of wrong IMO

@ianforber
@ianforber 25 дней назад
I doubt I’ll get the camera but not because of any failings in the camera itself. I have a M11 and a Q2 and I can’t justify adding this. The image quality would likely be about the same once the files have been processed through DxO PureRaw4 or Topaz Photo AI but if I want a small carry camera I’ll use the M11 and if I want autofocus I’ll use the Q2. The sensors on both allow me to crop to the equivalent of the zoom on the D-Lux.

I don't see any of the reviewers discussing the massive creative and significant IQ advantage of the multi-aspect ratio sensor, which uses the entire image circle of the lens in either 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9. 1:1 is cropped from 4:3 instead of the smaller 3:2. The multi-aspect ratio sensor is why I'd get it. Plus, the lens is very sharp, being all glass. 16:9 at 24mm also results in close to 22mm wide. Why don't photographers care about being able to use the entire image circle of the lens in these formats, instead of having to crop everything from 3:2?
@GastonShutters
@GastonShutters 25 дней назад
Great point and I did mention that feature in my prior review
@jefffenske1958
@jefffenske1958 25 дней назад
@@GastonShutters I did see it mentioned, but the advantages not explained. Did you do a review in which you did explain them? Most photographers don't even understand what's happening when the dial is turned, how the oversized sensor functions and what the advantages are. As far as I know, this is the last camera that's being offered with multi-aspect, unless a 10 MP M43 Panasonic is still being offered, which doesn't have IS or IBIS, and is designed for video. Gordon Laing was one of the few reviewers who would explain what multi-aspect does, but didn't really explain its advantages. Panasonic never marketed it well. Thanks.
@GastonShutters
@GastonShutters 25 дней назад

@jefffenske1958
@jefffenske1958 24 дня назад
@@GastonShutters It also helps us think in terms of what is the best aspect ratio for this shot while shooting. Because 3:2 is often not the best aspect ratio. And I really love getting a wider than 24mm field of view when shooting in 16:9, which can also be cropped in post to panos 2:1 or the XPAN 65:24. I've long believed that oversized crop sensors should be the norm in all cameras, instead of having to crop everything from 3:2. Being able to capture more of what the lens sees should have been on the top of many photographers' and manufacturers' list, but it's hardly ever mentioned. I'm now using Fuji's GFX 100S medium format with my Canon full frame EF lenses so I can capture most of what these lenses see. All 35mm lenses can be shot in square (33x33mm) and pano (65:24) without vignetting, using the full image circle of the lenses. Petal lens hoods have to be sawed off though. Other ratios may vignette, but are a dream come true for me. No longer stuck in 3:2
@JimAvery
@JimAvery 24 дня назад
That's a great point. I've been pondering a lot lately how inconvenient it is to rotate the whole camera 90 degrees just to take a portrait format shot, when surely the answer would be to use a square (1:1) sensor. I doubt camera manufacturers will do anything quite that radical any time soon, so this seems to be the next-best-thing. Of course the Q3 also solves that problem by having a huge number of pixels to play with.
@JonRatzlaff
@JonRatzlaff 15 дней назад
Print size has no relation to resolution the same way as you can have a 100” 720p display. Yes it’s possible to print large photos with only 17mp but you’ll run into drawbacks such as seeing the individual pixels. If you want seamless detailed prints you’ll most likely want to print in the 300 dpi range. A 300dpi print at 4736 x 3552 (the cameras max resolution) will give you a max print size of ~15x11”.

I'm considering this as a more casual carry than my Ms and film cameras. Res and M4/3 is fine for general purpose use and I don't use video. Just a nice, practical, reasonable (?!) value, viewfinder camera that produces good images, DNGs, has a good battery and is served by a good phone app (Fotos). For me, a more flexible alternative to X100/GR/RX100. I'd have loved more weather sealing and flexibility of in-camera Looks, but I suspect Looks will come in firmware once the Lux app launch is dealt with - launching both at the same time was odd...

@GastonShutters I reviewed the files you indicated, and I didn't like the quality of the files. Lack of resolution and basic sharpness. Perhaps, if it were a monochrome sensor, where the light hits directly on the sensor without color filters, the image would have more sharpness and resolution. The Sony ZV-E1 has only 12 megapixel, and generates crisp, high-resolution files. Therefore, small megapixel is not a problem. But the quality of the sensor is very important. When I mean black and white, it's not by color, but by the quality of a sensor without the colored filters. I have a Canon R6 Mark II. I want a small camera with a minimum of file quality. I'd stick with the Fujifilm X100VI instead of the DLux 8. My score is 3/10 for the DLux file. 10/10 for your work. Thanks.

I wasn't even aware the D-LUX 7 does not have DNG support. Does it matter? All D-LUX cameras ALWAYS supported the RWL RAW format (probably the same as on the Panasonic version). I have the older type 109 D-LUX. I bought it used from a Leica store with extra batteries, the grip and a hand strap in mint condition with box for USD600 - a steal. It's 12MP with the largest 4:3 crop. By the way, depending on your motive and the scene, you can print MUCH larger with "low" resolution cameras. I have printed up to 30x40 inches from 12MP files. The prints looks amazing and at that size, nobody is going to press their nose against the glass of the frame to pixel peep. At any suitable viewing distance, nobody is going to ever guess these prints were made with 15 year old cameras that only had 12MP. That said, the difference between the D-LUX 8 with its ~17MP and the type 109 with its 12MP is not very large either.

Thanks again for this informative video and thanks for the DNGs ! I own a Canon EOS 200D, it’s my first camera, it’s great, I have three lenses for it, but the thing is that it’s too big, too difficult to transport, especially on vacation (not great when you have to carry a big backpack with only camera gear inside of it 😅). I also find that the colours (straight out of the camera, in JPEG) are not realistic, there’s always too much red in the image, and I feel like that even if there is a 24MP sensor on this camera, it doesn’t give good and sharp images like the D-LUX 8 or a higher end Leica Camera. Maybe this is why Smartphones are used, because you get “good looking images” directly, thanks to AI and all of this algorithms which create good images. The thing is that, with these small sensors on Smartphones, the quality of the images is not as good compared to the images coming out of a camera. This is why I’m interested in the D-LUX 8. Because I experienced a reflex camera which is quite bulky and doesn’t give that good results. For me, it wouldn’t really be a second camera, it would be my primary camera to take pictures on vacation, when I’m with my family and so on.

By looking at multiple reviews, it seems that there won't be Leica Looks in the D-LUX 8. But then, nobody really got the final firmware so there's still hope, I don't know. It would have been logical for Leica to implement the Leica Looks, as users can experience it for free (more or less) on a smartphone. It would go in the right direction, just like making a great UI, putting USB-C (probably because of EU regulations, but it's still great), implementing newer bluetooth... As a photographer, I think that you don't necessarily need the Leica Looks. The GRIII as a full frame and it quite small

GRiII is APSC and a different shooting experience. I own them.

As Gaston said GRIII is Apsc (I own one and love it) but I also have M43 kit that also produces excellent quality for 99% of people . The rest is hype, I am not saying the IQ or the dynamic range are not better, they will be. The issue is 99% of us do not have a need for anything better. What is important is how easy it is to take the camera with you, how much excitement and fun it is in use and that you are not then disappointed with the results. You then have to choose where you put the £s, $ or € and what floats your boat!!

C'mon, what's the fuss about? It's a 2018 Panasonic Lumix LX100-II, same exact specs (same m43 sensor, same lens etc.), but more expensive (it is a fabulous camera though!). Bought my Lumix second hand (mint condition) for 500€, and use it when I don't want to lug around my DSLR (great set of in-camera JPEG recipes, and lovely RAW files for post-processing if needed). Leica are very good at making top of the range cameras and lenses (Q series, M series etc.) but this is just a poor attempt at overpricing a reheated meal made by Panasonic 6 years ago I'm afraid...

No fuzz just a cool looking camera that takes great picture like it’s predecessor.

It would be terrible if no Leica look at the new camera. SL3 and Q3 got it.

I guess if you rely of them a lot that could be a bummer not having them.

@@GastonShutters SL3 and Q3 are definitely for hardcore users and real enthusiasts who have Leica look jpg, while Dlux 8 targets casual and young photographers, which is a must. That is why Fuji and Ricoh are famous among youngsters because of film simulation.

m4/3 is a good format that fully meets the needs of most hobbyist photographers. There’s been a massive ad campaign from all manufacturers that you need full frame but that’s just to allow them to sell more cameras. That’s fine - we need them to stay in business! But m4/3 is still a great format.
