In this episode, I review the Leica M10-D that I've been using for several years now bother my personal project Kindred Guardians and my professional assignment work.
I go through why I love this camera and the Leica M system in general and how it has improved my photography, and how I can justify an $8500 digital camera that lacks an LCD screen and has zero bells and whistles.
If you want to see more images from my project visit.

In my opinion, this was one of the best camera reviews I've seen. It wasn't entertaining or fun or whatever. The reviewer just tried, as hard as he could, to pass on his impressions connected to his preferences and goals. That's a hard sell for some people looking for "objective comparisons" (number of features x price, for example), but I think this kind of reviews are the most objective of all, because photography is not, for most people at least, an enginnering quandary, but a means to capture a moment that's meaningful to yourself and, hopefully, to some others. Not everyone will like our photos, our cameras or us. But that's perfectly ok.

Yes, there seems to be a lot of anger in the armchair photographer community, which is saddening. We have more options than ever to choose what gear works best for us, and I for one, think that's pretty cool! If money were no issue (and my tired, old eyes were a bit better), I would love to have an M-10P with a 50 Sumilux. Just because I have always wanted a Leica and after holding one for a short while, feels great in the hand. Thanks for the amazing images you create and for being a champion of quickly vanishing wildlife. All the best and safe travels!

I agree with you Stan, I don't see why people are so negative or perhaps it's just the people that tend to comment tend to be angry. It's been extremely refreshing to see so much positivity on RU-vid compared to the PetaPixel commenters.

I have watched this clip like more than 5 five times and finally I was about to acquire pre-owned M10-D that the owner only used for 6 months and I really got a great deal and you are the reason that I dropped M10-P/R consideration and now I only got this Camera for a week and absolutely loving it! I was worried about formatting SD card as you mentioned and am happy to report that the current Leica Foto App is now about to format the card over the iPhone App ! I really appreciate how this M10-D keep me 'in present', 'in the flow', 'focusing on the subject instead of my LCD screen....' , simple, simple, simple. less, less, less. It really has everything that I need to shoot a photo, and a good photo .... yes 'limitation' sparks 'creativity' is very true that apply all facets of our lives ... I just learned that M10-D now has been discontinued to prepare more capacity for M10P/R/Monochrome .... I'm happy that after 4 months of waiting for a one.. my Leica dealer found one is almost like a brand new one. Thank you Justin for posting this review, and i'll share my M10-D journey !

Wow, best comment I've received so far, I'm smiling ear to ear. I've truly loved my first year with the M10-D and I must say I'm sad to see it discontinued but at the same time I'm not worried because I'm sure this one will last for years to come. The camera isn't for everyone and I don't mean that in an elitist way, I just mean it takes a photographer who likes to think and shoot a very specific way. I'm so happy you are happy with your purchase and please do stay in touch.

@@AskMOTT Thanks for your comment, it means a lot to me. Now I'm working hard to see if I can get a 35mm/lux to replace my summicron.... What is the brand of the strap that you are using? it looks very solid one... my last take on LCD screen.... LCD=Lose Concentration Display/Device/Distraction ..... and I can only say that for myself. I shot XPRO 3, so 70% of time i would never flipped open that hidden LCD panel.... but when it is there for me to flip open.... it gets into my head.... and to this date.... i still do not know most extra functions available to me... and the LCD panel has sign telling me something is 'locked' in my camera, after 6 months, i still do not know what happened ..what has been locked and how to unlock.... sign.. ... initially I really love my XPRO 3 and sometimes I still shoot it because I really don't have to think too much, it would figured out everything for me..... and it can really made me lazy, more scary thing is, it gave me some illusion when a great shot is made and I actually was not the one who made it ..XPRO 3 made it for me ... I was never sure how 'conscious' I was making that shot.... and this M10D really made me aware and think... I'm not a professional photographer, and not even close as proper photographer. I'm a corporate HR executive who wants to use my photo to raise the voice of our employees, tell the stories about our talents and those heroes in the middle, highlight the future vision and explore potential of our organisation from A to B.... i just subscribed your newsletter and will keep learning from you and your work. - Andrew

Your work speaks for itself. The camera is just a tool, but if you're making art, it has to be an extension of yourself. It has to get the hell out of the way, give you a great image, and make you feel like you're free to concentrate on what matters. I shot with a 50mm for three years before I went to a 24-70 for a three year project, and now I shoot a 35mm. That's it.

For me as a non-professional but had used the Leica M6 TTL in the 1990s and now using a Sony RX1 for a while. I miss the thrill of taking the pictures and not to know the outcomes after coming back home and look at the developed slides. This kind of photography really slow me down and make me think before taking a shot. Now approaching 60, I am really want to get this M10-D to relive the moments that I had with my M6 TTL years ago. Great discussioni. Leica Q2 shooter here - love that camera - still evaluating what M10 I would be best suited for. In the meantime, I'm using a Fujifilm X-Pro3 which brings the "absence of a back screen" experience for a little less money. Although it is busier than the Leica from a feature perspective it does bring you a part of the way there with regards to composing with the viewfinder, manual controls, etc. It's a baby step for those who aren't completely sure that no screen is for them. You can always use M lenses on it as well so any investment is not wasted should you choose to upgrade.
@AskMOTT
@AskMOTT 4 года назад
Joe Zobkiw That Q2 is a nice camera , those files must be great to print. I tried out the Q1 as a backup camera but it felt a little flimsy for me so I went w a used M10 in silver for assignment work back up camera.

I love using the M10M and M10R and I completely get the minimalist angle on the M10-D, but the workflow does matter. The inability to format the card on the camera itself is a no go for me. I don't use the app as I found it a battery drain, but a good feature to add would be to format the card via your phone. I also get the self imposed limits and the desire to eliminate temptations but the uplift for that seems excessive, like many Leica things. But being a Leica user is a philosophical choice and the limits do force you to be deliberate, attentive, and I do enjoy that most of all.
@AskMOTT
@AskMOTT 4 года назад
Robert Stacy thanks for your comments Robert. I should clarify that you can format your card within the app , but you can’t format it if that card is coming from a camera system other than the M system. It’s a very strange glitch and it doesn’t happen every time but often enough to annoy me.

Thanks. That’s helpful should I get the crazy notion to buy another Leica. Regardless of which one there is nothing like it in terms of forcing you to own your results: good or bad. Also, totally agree on film being a drag to process. Can’t speak for the rendering on the M10-D but the M10-M and M10-R deliver the same joy I felt shooting Tri-X and Provia transparencies when I did shoot film. Nice work by the way.

I bought a pre-owned M-P 240 with a 35 Summicron this spring to figure out if the Leica system is for me, both professionally as a photographing journalist (not a photojournalist, that is out of my league) and in my personal life. Probably it is, I can tell by now. But so far I get enough thrill from turning the rear screen off now and then. Great review. Don’t listen to the haters.

Justin, I recent came across your vblog. I love your passion and I sympathize with you enthusiasm for the M10-D. I have a Sony RX1rm2 which also makes me slow down but rewards me with superb images when I do. I like to shoot without chimping...You just need to be confident in your technique and, as you imply, with that confidence comes a release from all the unnecessary complexity of modern cameras. Such cameras remind me of my Contax G2 film camera which I took around the world for many years. And 35mm focal length is my favorite. Clearly, this doesn't suit every style of photography, but...you just keep on stylin'. Your pictures are terrific. Best, John

Justin, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Your self banter, energy, honesty, and humility are refreshing. And also I love and respect your professional passions and projects. Your wildlife images and the portraits of their caretakers are more like ‘family’ portraits than wildlife documentary photos to me. For no other reason than they are so - intimate. Now, I am not a professional photog. I’m a Theologian, Educator and and photog enthusiast. Photography has become my passion. And just recently I was introduced to Leica. So I started with Nikon. Converted first to the Fuji X and later Fuji GFX systems. And as much as I’d become a Fujifilm fanboy - especially after the GFX I still longed for the MF pleasure that I first discovered using the Nikon D700 and later, my beloved Nikon Df. So my journey has evolved like this. Love of MF came from Nikon. Appreciation for size from Fujifilm. Appreciation for exquisite glass from old Nikon glass and new Zeiss lenses. And when you mix all that together out pops Leica. I sold my entire GFX kit and replaced it with the Typ246 and the SL2. I love B&W but sold my 246 last week and replaced it with the older M9. I specifically wanted the CCD sensor. And now I’m preparing to sell the SL2 and replace that with the M10R. Why? Because I haven’t touched the SL2 in weeks. The M simply has a more tactile and enjoyable feel in my hands Yes, the SL2 is technically superior and is and wonderful camera ,but I’m making myself shoot it. I miss my M. “Stay Safe and Be Blessed.’, Chaps

Thank you for taking the time to write to me Chaps and thank you for the kind words. The journey to finding the perfect camera can be funny and expensive and it's always evolving as we do as humans and photographers. I started with an M6 film camera over a decade ago and now here I am back to the M system and I just love it. Good luck with the M10-R, I'm sure you're going to love it.

I totally understand how many can have sticker shock over a Leica camera and how we try and play it off that x brand is just as good or what ever self reasoning we come up with. However shooting with a camera you love to use and love to create with ...... Is hard to put a price tag on. I have seen people with a love of a plastic holga camera make some really good images. Just understanding your equipment (like going out with just one lens) can really improve your ability. I am one who can not afford a Leica system. However I do have a camera some may say is sub pare but I love creating with it. So I am happy.

Great Review - Justin did exactly as the title intimated, and, added impressions and lived experiences as well as some samples... Perfect marks. As a hobbyist, I am not in the same league, however I fully understand the minimalist concept. I carried a Leica X1 on my belt and shot in SAm for 6 weeks and came back with very worthy material that was very easy to edit because it captured so well. Fellow photographers were impressed, so, I would say I was very content. So intuitive to work with dials and just plain fun ! And, obviously the M10 -D is on another level, but if the entry level is so good, then wow ! My other camera is a Canon 5D MkIII.

Nice approach I must say! Look, in my modest opinion one ought to pass through the state of chasing megapixels and specs first in order to understand your arguments and the nature of a camera such as M10-D. First things first, I will never “accept” the price tag of any Leica as a matter of principle… you see, I have the tools that fits my photography for 1/8th of the price and I love my bulky DSLR and the colorimetry of Canon, BUT a digital camera without a screen, with a pretty capable sensor, stellar build quality and compact size is the impersonation of freedom! I understand that and the connection of that system in your workflow as well. If you want my opinion, don’t bother much for those who doesn’t accept your choice. I receive the same reactions every time I try to explain why I am using my camera with a 70-210 telephoto only and for the wider shots only my iPhone! It a combination that works the best for my and I am happy… no further explanations needed. Anyway, your work is really nice 👍!!

I’ve always thought that the addition of the traditional looking M3 film advance lever as a thumb arrest was genius. I don’t know why Leica doesn’t offer this on all of their modern digital models, instead we have to use those thumb supports… seems like such an oversight on Leica’s part

I wish I have the courage to work with only one lens. I do a lot of corporate and event photography and frequently I find myself in tight corners where I have no choice but to resort to using a super wide, or I will be in situations where the subject is too far and I really need to zoom in. Clients here frequently have various demands and I can’t see how I could work with only a 35mm lens. Maybe if I am doing reportage style where I have time to think? Kudos to you for that. Leica M series have always been on my dream list ever since the film era, but I just couldn’t justify spending on one due to the scope of work I am doing.

Your photos are fantastic. That has nothing to do with gear, but if the gear fits you it will allow you to be fantastic more often and with less effort. These people who are negative, mean or anti-Leica just don't get it and never will. As for the rich guy stuff and Leica shooters, I am a poor working pro, I am 41, I shoot Leica. An M10 and a 35mm 2.4 for now. I chose the Leica over a car, and I would do it again. As I said, I am 40 and a pro shooter. I started when I was 18 and guess how many cameras and lenses I have owned? I shot on a Leica M3 with a 50 cron and 35 cron from 1997 until 2013 when they were stolen from me. Then, due to cash flow issues, I shot a fuji x pro 1 until March 17, 2020, when I could finally afford to purchase an M10(used, but still). Now I feel whole again, and how many damn pros can say they have, over a 23-year career, owned 3 bodies and 4 lenses? Oh, and the M3 was made in 1957! Leica doesn't quit on you. Keep it up, Justin and forget those nasty trolls. Of course, you know all of this, or you would not be where you are. www.danielmollohanphotography.com

Love your video Justin. The feeling when you start shooting with the 10-D is kind of.. diving into water from the next height. You feel nervous and apprehensive, wait for quite a while, but when you take the dive it feels so great! It is so true that you get much more present in the moment of the story you are telling when you use an "analog" camera again. I love mine - Using Summilux 50, but might pick up a used 35 as well. Bought mine for a book project, but damned covid put a stop to travels... Love your work on conservation- keep it up! Stay healthy!

I've used split image cameras before and the Fuji does not give a clear enough split image unlike the Canon Canonet QL 19 a wonderful film camera with a fixed 45mm lens built in 1964. Older then you and for years as a Professional Photographer (now just a hobby) I only had film. When I got my first digital it just wasn't in my DNA to check (Chimp). I had a camera where the screen could be flipped, I'd flipped it closed when I got it for no reason other it seemed more protected and just completely forgot it had a screen, truly forgot. I had a reason to think, boy I wish I could check that image before getting home on one occasion and then thought, hey you can you have a screen. I used it, liked it for that moment but instinctively turned it back over, I've used it maybe 10 times since. I'm a Right Eye shooter and my nose smudges the back of the camera, and sometimes it knocks against things. So long story short I'd choose this camera in the M line up. My complaints x 3, it's a limited run but most of the heavy lifting has been covered so please charge the same, the on/off on the back looks a bit naff the original M-D (240 variant) looked more robust, and finally they don't make it anymore!.

Checked the website Justin - Fantastic images. Love the kindred series and the portraits. I'm a long time Fujifilm user and looking to get an M10P and M10 Monochrome - The lenses from Leica alone are reasons to buy into the system - No knocking Fujifilm as they have a great selection and I love my setup but Leica has a specific look that Japanese lenses don't have. Plus the statement you made of being in the moment and in control is 100% valid. I feel the same as I use my Fuji cameras on manual 90% of the time. The Leica is a beautiful device but one thing scares me from the company is the turn around time for servicing - people have states 3-6month for simple rangefinder calibration - this is disgraceful. Japanese manufacturers can have a body and lens back in 2 weeks. Cant see why Leica cannot do the same.

Hi Justin, Jose from Puerto Rico. I just subscribed to your channel. You said a phrase that sums it up: "This just works for me", and even though you're a working pro, you're enjoying the art. Folks get all caught up on and feel that everything has to be justified. Did you mug someone and steal their money to buy your camera? Nope. (Well at least I hope not). So there you have it! If it makes you feel good and as bonus folks are willing to pay you for your art, that's the icing on the cake. Some folks will spend 80 million on a Van Gogh painting that can be destroyed and never recover it. But it makes them feel good, so who are we to judge?

Duane Michaels once said something to the effect of the difference between the artist and the photographer is a sense of control. The M10D is that and the first camera that has me looking at it thinking finally I can move on from my M6-original owner of it by the way and it has had the same 35 cron on it for 29 years! My back end issue is chemistry and proper disposal of it. My blood type is HC-110 by now LOL

Can you set up the Auto-ISO range and min shutter speed from the App? How about which exposure method? I have my M240 set up to just use classic with LV off so it just uses the built in light meter and not the sensor, and it's much faster shooting that way. I love the idea of this camera so long as you can set up some things from the app. I really do wish they would have made the film advance actually re-cock the shutter instead of just a "thumb grip".

Reason for asking is I’m thinking of getting the original M-D (typ 262) and of course you can’t use an external EVF with that model. Certainly the film Leica Ms hold their value relatively well - especially if bought used - and in some cases actually appreciate in value - witness the original Leica M6. But with the digital Ms this is less so, though still better than most if not all other brands. Also, with digital cameras and their files, shelf life in terms of compatibility with apps, computer programs, editing software, etc., is finite - unlike with film cameras and their "files", where the earliest film cameras and "files" are still and will continue to be usable for a long time to come. Want to be assured that your images will survive at least 100 years? Shoot and archivally print film. Or, want the best of both worlds? Transfer your most valuable digital files to film, especially slide film. It's all a question of how much you value your work and legacy.

The work arounds I found were using a dedicated sd card only for your M10D, formatting on another M10 if you happen to have one or getting formatting software for your desktop and formatting using that after your cards been used in another camera. My advice , use a dedicated sd card that you only use w your Leica and don’t use it on other cameras, not even another Leica Like a Q or an SL.
