Leica has just announced the return of their iconic M6. How is it different from the original when the company is using much of the very same machinery they did when the camera was first launched in 1984? How can it be the same when 18 years have passed and technology has marched on? How might this affect used prices? Stay through the whole video to find out!

I own an electronics manufacturing company myself - we've been stocking 1 year's worth (or more) on critical components for 20 years. It's a huge investment, but it's kept us running when others are shut down, but in the last 2 years we've seen lead times go out past 2 years for many things. Kudos for Leica for doing trying to stay ahead of the supply chain issues, it's a nightmare out there right now.

They haven't stayed ahead of the supply chain issues. My new 2022 M6 scratched film straight out of the box and it took Leica four months to repair because they did not have pressure plates.

As a retired photographer, who had many cameras in my career, of different formats, my only camera I have left is my 1996 M6. It’s in mint condition, and is the silver finish with a matching 1996 Summicron F2 50mm lens. I thought about selling it, but now after watching this great video, I’m not getting rid of it. Thanks for changing my mind ! Great job, Rick….. 📷

This was simply wonderful! What a great interview! I’m amazed and excited that Leica has made such a bold move. My journey with Leica began in the early 2000s with an M7, followed by a pair of MPs (one black, one silver; usually with one loaded with slide film and the other with black & white film, as I traveled and attended various workshops). Your discussion of phonograph records was perfectly on point. I grew up with records and, as a teenager, went through the eight-track and cassette days and ultimately the CD days, but the warmth and depth of the records was never captured by the digital technology. It’s the difference between seeing a photo of a deer in the woods and seeing one in person, while feeling the warmth of the sun, the caress of the wind, smelling the trees and grasses, and simply taking in the dimensionality of place and time. We are analog creatures, after all. Kudos to Leica for making this move. Count me in.

That was really great, I appreciate you taking the time to make this video and sharing it. I was born in the 1960s and I remember we had a TV and stereo repair shop around the corner from our house. You could still purchase vacuum tubes at the local drugstore. When my Parasound stereo amplifier was having a problem just prior to covid, I was able to drive over to San Francisco and drop it off at their warehouse. They checked it out, and I was able to pick it up the next day. And this was after 12 years of ownership lol. So I totally appreciate Leica's ethos and dedication to Quality craftsmanship. Cheers!

What a great interview, Andrea's passion is clear to see. I usually take a digital M and a film M out with me. The digital is used most of the time, but the film M is that one that gives me the most pleasure. Even though I own an M6TTL and an MP, the M6 is often the camera I take out as it does just seem to link into the history of photography and Leica a little more to me.

What a wonderful interview! Thank you, Hugh and Andrea. You can really feel the love and passion for photography in general and Leica in particular. As an M7 owner (and M10-R) I’m now so tempted to drive the six hours to Wetzlar and bunk outside until early Nov 😊. Just the other day when doing a fashion shoot we squeezed in a few images made with the M7, a 50 Lux and Portra 160. The art director loved it when viewing the end result. The feel of advancing the film is so rewarding…

I bought an M6 TTL for my spouse in 2017, but $2500 for a nearly perfect used camera was painful. Then, the camera was in a bag that fell, damaging the rewind knob. We found a new replacement at Leica Miami store and it was repaired at an authorized shop in Bangkok. Unfortunately, now my spouse is too nervous to use it and instead opts for a 1938 Leica II (Barnack) which is smaller anyway. We have newer digital and film SLRs, but the Leica II remains the goto, always in the bag, everyday camera. Personally, I prefer SLRs and TLRs (I have an R4 and R6.2), but I sometimes use a Leica IIIb or IIIc. I'd love to buy one of these new M6's, but I don't think it is in our near term budget. Thanks for making it - it is a goal.

Excellent interview, thanks. I grew up with film, mostly Nikon F, and Mamiya medium format-mixed in the digital (M9, M10) for the common reasons that attracted most of us. But film is still a huge part of my workflow-35, 120, 4x5-lucky to have a pro darkroom at home. I frequently experiment with new emulsions on the market-it's part of the fun. I have kept the M9 (traded the 10 for a medium format digital for my studio work) but I think the new M6 would pair well with the quirky but delightful M9 on the street. I believe it's a brilliant move by Leica to do this; good for them....ok, time to put some Schubert on my turntable.

It's great to see the M6 come back into production! I'm old, I learned photography when all there was was film photography and didn't have my first useful digital camera until after 41 years had gone by. And while I enjoy digital cameras quite a lot, and respect all the intense development work that has gone into making them fantastic machines, I've never stopped using film cameras as well. I don't know whether I need a new M6-my '78 M4-2 is working just fine, which was the same reason I didn't buy an M-A-but the fact that it is there, new, and available if I *want* one is a truly wonderful thing.

In my experience, it doesn't matter what Leica you pick, it feels second to none. But, as much as I love my Leicas, I simply love using cameras - not just Leicas. I don't have an M6, and likely never will - my M7 and M-A do it all for me. However, in the history of cameras the M6 likely has taken more iconic photos in the last almost 40 years than any other. Great interview, it's such a polarising brand. I had the opportunity to by an M6 + 2 lenses for £800 in 2003, and I really regret not doing this. I wanted to own a Leica and after many years of trying to justify it, I went to the Leica store in Mayfair and bought an MP240 and a 35 Sumarit. The camera was used, but they said it had been serviced and checked and I loved the patina and feel of it. When I tried to use it the rangefinder was misaligned and the camera displayed such obvious corrosion that the images were really just so disappointing. This was the end of my Leica journey, I returned it as there was no interest in the camera store to resolve these problems, the return and servicing would have taken months to materialise. I'm glad they are still going though as it's a wonderful brand.

I have a Leica M6 and I have been wondering if I should get something digital. Now I feel great that the M6 is back in production. I have many outstanding photos that are 14 to 34 years old on display in my home with rich colors and detail. I still have been avoiding digital cameras but might get one someday. It seems that film is still a great way to take pictures which then can be scanned with 16 bits of color per channel to make fantastic color digital images that are better than most digital cameras even today. I think the MP rangefinder versions would be the other option if I needed something new. I like the reference to music as I am trained also as a professional classical musician, and I understand it completely. Taking pictures is a great hobby.

Hope film production will not stop in the next 50 years.. These cameras (as any film camera) allow people making pictures, art, meditate, frustrate, learn and enjoy simple things. The modern perfect “AI” digital cameras do everything else.. Please let film alive and thanks Leica for producing still film cameras. Wished more companies would offer such products. Greetings from an exclusive film user. (love my M-A camera -despite its price..).

While I have never been crazy about shooting with a rangefinder, my hat's off to Leica for this.

Good that these will not be a special edition launch. That means, I can save up properly (and they won't all sell out), to buy one for my b'day. I do like the M-A though.

Someone please tell Leica to produce a new film point and shoot!

5000 bucks is still a grand more than the original was adjusted for inflation. It can be quite difficult for young people to find reliable rangefinder film cameras that justify their price. It’s just frustrating seeing marking by Leica talking about young people having a new entry point for film photography. Leica is one of less than a handful of companies with the expertise of making rangefinder cameras. I’m still happy about this new M6. They’ve fixed the big problem of the original M6’s finder. Hopefully it’ll drive down the costs of used Ms. All this does very little for non rich young people who want or even need to shoot with rangefinders. Some company should make a new Canonet style camera with a really good fixed lens, good rangefinder, and meter readings for manual exposure, so young people can actually buy a film camera with the confidence that it will last. If Pixii can make a digital APS-C rangefinder for $3000 than somebody should be able to make a similar camera for film for about $2.500.

Just buy a canon P. TBH, most all of them are hot garbage that are entirely outdated. And young people today really shoot digital but with extra steps. They hand film to a mailbox, then get scans sent back to them, never to be printed.

@@Adrian-wd4rn I’m 24, I have an M5 and a Fuji frontier SP500 (which works like a color enlarger head). For Christmas and birthdays everyone always gets prints from me. The rest just documentation for myself. I think there is a huge advantage to shooting film as your first photography medium and actually learning to shoot on a camera with dials that actually influence the mechanics they manipulate. Shooting with and learning the zone system has helped me tremendously to understand light and exposure. Two friends of mine asked me what film cameras they should get. One has a Canon 7 the other a Canonet GIII. I’m a huge fan of watching photochemically finished 35 and 70mm prints of movies but that doesn’t mean, I don’t think it’s cool when people shoot movies on film and finish them on the computer.

I had an M4 and an CL, which I no longer have. I have digital cameras today. Digital is a wonder for sure. That said, there is something about film that digital cannot replicate. The Leica M4, IMHO, is the finest Leica ever made. It takes you into photography with great simplicity. It is great that the classic M4 is coming back.

Get a xpro3, out of my presets, no one was able to tell an iota of difference if it was film or digital. There is nothing about film that digital cannot replicate. Glad I dumped that trash a month ago and went digital, life is easier, photos are nailed every time, and best of all, JPG's from kodachrome, hp5, pro400, provia, velvia, that I can shoot to hearts content.

Watching this with my original M6 on my desk..
@Tom_YouTube_stole_my_handle
With the return of the M6 it really does behove a company like Leica to look into the repair situation of owners of the original M6 and M6TTL with failed electronics.
@the_last_rangefinder_society
Still use mine everyday. It’s a relief to know a new one could be had should anything ever happen to it……..
