The Lecia Q2 camera would be the perfect camera for me if it were not for one thing.... the 28mm focal length. If this were 35mm I would have bought one a long time ago. I even tried buying a 28mm lens for my main camera system to see if I can get to like it... but I still have not got there.. I am tempted to buy an M11 with a 35mm F1.4 - but the lack of weather sealing pretty much makes me not want to go that route. Just imagine if Lecia made a 28, 35, and 50mm version of this camera. I think they would make a killing....
@@mattgranger totally get it what you are saying. I don’t think they will do it. Been tempted to see if I can buy a Q and shoot in 35mm mode, but I also think it is fair to say that cropping is not the same as having a different focal length.
I agree about the 35 and 50mm versions but that would take away from M sales. I would go for a 40mm. As far as I know they do not make a 40mm M lens. The crop modes are not what I want from a camera this expensive.
Would I would love to see is Leica following Ricoh’s example with their GR III models and making version of the camera that has a standard focal length (maybe a version of their Summilux-M 50 f/1.4). The crop modes could then be 85mm, 100mm, 135mm. I love my Q2, but sometimes I want to take some portraits, and 28mm just feels a bit too wide.
It's so lovely to see many Leica people thirsting for a 50mm fixed lens camera. I think that would give the camera wonderful portrait options as well as beautiful limitations in framing your shot. It would invite us to focus on the details and essence. Personally I have my phone for 28mm, but I cannot take portraits on there.
Agree on all points. I use a half leather case on my Q2M with a little thing on front, helps a ton. Sensor, of course the 60mp. Before an internal memory, better implement the tilt screen. Battery for me least important
Keep in mind that it is the only (?) compact camera with an actual IP rating (IP52), so a tilt screen would possibly not go well with that. I find it pretty much perfect already, except the high iso performance. Really hope the Q3 will be a massive improvement in low light.
A faster shutter speed, like 1/8000, 1/16000 would off course be useful when using the 1.7 aperture in sunny conditions. However, as far as I know this is not technically feasible using a central leaf shutter. Am I correct?
Hi Matt. For me the major improvements I would like to see are better autofocus, better low-light performance and a higher res sensor. It is otherwise a perfect camera.
I have the Q and Fuji’s x100v and the only two things where the 100v has the Q beat, are the film sims and the built-in nd filter. Love your channel, Matt, but I only agree with battery and internal memory comments, here.
I'd love to see the camera with a 40mm f/2.0 lens. I know bit of a weird focal length for the modern photographer. A better grip would indeed be very much welcomed. The only thing I don't really want is a bigger sensor. For full frame i am happy with 24-26mb.
I think Leica would need to make a quantum leap of improvements to justify and existing Q2 user to upgrade, certainly more than increased resolution, a tilt screen and improved battery life /faster max shutter speed. However new entrants to the world of Leica will doubtless got for the Q3 once Q2 production ceases
Hi! Let's not forget some thing additionally: 7 stop IBIS, PD AF, shutter speed max at 1/8000, usb c charging, some video capabilities 4K 120fps, better low light capabilities (either through low noise at high iso or max aperture), inbuilt nd filters and last but not least two uhs card slots. I really hope Leica's watching your videos. :)
Now that they have USB/iOS remote control for the M11 I think that needs to be in the Q3 and hopefully a better positioned USB port on the side and not the weird under camera position?! And it took them 3 iterations to realise that a tilt screen is essential.
A new Q2 costs $5800. Hard to see the price you mentioned at $5500, that would below the current price. Maybe they will call it the Q2P or Q2R and upgrade the sensor which could also improve shutter speed. Battery improvement in same form factor would be good, again the sensor could help with battery life. Don't care about tilt screen or monkeying with the front of camera since there are the addons available. Europe is in pretty rough economic shape right now, why not hold off on Q3 for 18 months. Worst thing would be to release a new camera and have weak sales. We have seen special designation cameras come out within a year to 18 months of a full upgrade, so possible. Thanks for the thought provoking video, nicely done!
Not entirely correct: The shutter speed on the M11 is 1/4000 mechanical then electronic as is the Q2 but then with a max of 1/2000 mechanical shutter. Both cameras rely on electronic shutter for shooting in bright light ☀️
i just upgraded to an m240 (it has been an awesome upgrade!) from an m8. i do like the idea of the Q, however, i’d probably end up getting the original version as 24 mb is good enough for me - granted haven’t seen too many original ones on the used market. great stuff matt!
Not going to pretend that I can afford any of those right now. The Hasselblad design is much more appealing to me thought. I'm considering to plan a project just to rent one.
Rumours of a 50mm lens instead of a 28mm lens surprises me. I'd quite like it to retain some form of IS, as I believe having IS can make better use of the larger megapixel count. The M11 doesn't have any, so it'd be ace to see the Q3 have it, as I believe the Q2 does.
@@matthiaskalt7041 perhaps for some… for others, who already own a Q2, it could be a great 2nd focal length for them when operating two cameras, and for Leica to offer two different focal lengths in a compact body at the same time. I’m with you, I’d love another 24-28mm Leica Q, but it’s not to say that Leica wouldn’t be curious to switch it up.
As much as I like and admire the Q generation cameras the price is the killer. What I want is a next generation Fujifilm ‘X100VI’ with the new 40MP X-Trans sensor and an 18mm (28mm equivalent) f/2.0 lens with digital crops to 35mm and 50mm. How about it Fuji?
Hmmm… no mention of autofocus? The autofocus on the Q2 is poor when compared to anything modern. I hope they can address that. Also the rear screen on the Q2 is poor as well. I’m shocked you said class leading… lol. Finally dynamic range is just okay. I hope they improve it. The DR on the M11 is amazing, I doubt they will use the same sensor since it has no autofocus, just like the M10 sensor was better than the Q2 sensor in every way. Let’s see what they do here.
Hello Matt, I have both the Hasselblad X1 ver 1 and the X2D, I know the X1D is not a fast camera and I do not think it was ever designed to be. But the hadeling is supereb and the colour since so nice. The X2D when it was annoced and there was no focuse peeking I was just a bit on endge, but after seeing it at a trad show as well as getting my hands on one. OOO what a delight the new manual focuse assist is. There are so many just the right number of external upgradeds not just the bigger senior but in softwhere it was well worth the upgrade. It is still not a sports cameras and that does not bother me one bit. I would love eye detect at some point but for now I just have to use my skill. Keep well, keep save and enjoy life,
I am still happy with my M10. I really don't see the need for that much more resolution - especially in a camera without proper IBIS, forcing you to use ridiculously fast shutter speeds to hide camera shake in the massive pixel count images. Pixel count only translates to resolution if you can get a technically sharp image. On the M10, I already need to watch shutter speed more than on my much cheaper mirrorless camera system bodies from other brands that have IBIS that allows me to handhold shots for seconds(!!) with sharper results. And then there is diffraction limiting aperture on 24x36 which for the M11 at 60MP already kicks in at around f5.6. Bye, bye depth of field. In all seriousness, if you want more detail resolving power, get a larger sensor. Get the Hasselblad. It's the better value proposition anyway.
Consumer: We would like to see in the next Leica Q3 this list of upgrades... Leica: We will release what we want and You Will Like It... and You will Pay us what we Say you will pay. As far as Hasselblad, I would like to see an X2D 50C
What to expect? Expect to pay 6, 7 or maybe even 8 thousand dollars for a camera that is mass manufactured using $500 to $900 worth of tech and materials per product - just because there is a $1 Leica sticker glued onto it. I understand people paying 50-80 grand for H6D's or IQ4's, at least they get what they pay for after all... But with Leica products?! With Leica products it's the complete opposite; You pay for what you don't get. It's like paying a sum of money you could buy a Rolls Royce Phantom with, except what you get is a Fiat Multipla with a Lamborghini sticker.
@@johnkasianowicz6536 I watch (almost) every video that Granger posts. THAT is why I viewed this video - not because the video was about an overpriced, garbage product, which is what Leica products are, nothing but overpriced garbage for brain dead hipsters and/or people with more money than brains, to use as a status symbol. That's all there is to it. Leica is simply yet another pointless ''luxury'' aka. status brand. Leica cameras cost all the money but offer neither performance nor quality. I mean, in what world does a FILM camera, with nothing but mechanical moving parts, worth $13,000? Don't answer, question was rhetorical. With todays technology and CNC machinery, a magnesium body film camera can be made for as cheap as $70 manufacturing costs per product - and that's with labor, tooling, overhead and all other manufacturing costs included! Yes, for as cheap as $70! Even if Leica manufactured their newest film camera for $150 or even $500 or let's even go full on crazy mode and go as far as saying that they spent $5,000 on manufacturing that camera, just for the sake of the argument... In what world is a piece of technology that can be made for $70, worth over $13,000?! In what world?! What is their camera made out of gold and diamonds?! Actually, speaking off, I just did the math and if you completely made the camera entirely out of gold and completely cover it in round cut, 0.10ct diamonds, IT STILL WOULDN'T END UP COSTING OVER $9,000 TO MANUFACTURE! It would cost anywhere from $7,000 to $9,000 depending on the price of diamond and gold!!!! Even if you were the richest man alive, you would have to be an idiot, a complete idiot, to buy a $70 product for $13,000. Leica is a literal scam.
@@villageblunder4787 What I think? Ok. I'll tell you what I think; If Leica was the last camera and lens manufacturer left on Earth, I would rather give up photography, than be forced to pay thousands for something that costs a three digit sum to manufacture AND ALSO offers neither performance nor quality to make up for the ridiculous pricing. Leica is a scam.
What's expected > - Same sensor and image processor as the Leica M11 - Same body, lens, and image stabilization as the Leica Q2 - Swivel screen - Higher PR EVF - Internal memory - USB-C charging - Phase detect AF - New handgrip with wireless charging - Same Leica BP-SCL4 lithium-ion battery but with higher power/mAh (milliamp/hour) That would be a pretty good upgrade overall. I only wish they'd also add a focus joystick; contorting one's thumb down to a D-Pad to move focus points loosens one's grip on the camera, which is far less than ideal.
Aren't you a photographer? Q2 has an electronic shutter speeds up to 1/40,000. People buy Leica Q for the amazing Summilux lens and versatility. It is not designed to be the best in anything and everything. Maybe you're missing the purpose of this camera.
Yes I am a photographer. And as a photographer, I understand that electronic shutter presents issues with artificial light and shooting with flash. The Q2 mechanical shutter tops out at 1/2000th. I hope it is improved
@Phillip Banes $50 Thumb support from Amazon would solve that problem. I had it on my M Cameras as well as the Q. I bought the Summilux lens not the camera :)
