This third Leica SL video is on my shooting experience using the M-Adapter T and M-mount lenses. This is how the majority of initial sales of the SL will be used, with this adapter and existing M-mount lenses. Is this a bad thing for Leica? With only 1SL lens available at this time, I don't think so. The majority of sales will come from existing Leica shooters, and the majority of them own M-glass. My guess is that most of them will own a digital M body, which lacks a decent electronic viewfinder for use with either telephoto or wide angle lenses. The new SL solves this problem with a class leading electronic viewfinder. Please enjoy my latest review and check out my first impressions and unboxing video for more information:

The SL is the MOST beautiful camera I have ever seen. Amazing, yet simple design that really brings the essence of Leica into the professional mirrorless world.

it's a controversial design departure, but I like that Leica takes risks with design. I personally think it's a beast of a camera and I enjoyed reviewing it.

@@bigheadtaco Not really a beast compared to, say a Nikon D5 with a 24-70... in fact, the images from it are at least as good, and in my experience even better.

For an almost 4x zoom, Leica 24-90mm is actually quite compact: 14cm (tall) x 8.8 cm (wide), 1.1kg, Let's check the competitors: 1) Typical Japanese scenario in this case is 24-70mm, which is 3x zoom. In average ~850g, 82mm filter, 12cm (tall) x 9 cm (wide). 2) Then there is another typical Japanese lens, 70-200mm, also 3x zoom, In average in about 1.5 kg, 77mm filter, ~20cm (tall) x 8.5 cm (wide) 90-280mm is longer than 70-200, which is understandable. But weight is similar. So 'weight-wise' lenses are comparable with Japanese DSLR world. But, Leica offers greater reach and greater flexibility: 90mm instead of typical 70mm, and 280mm instead of typical 200 mm. So with Leica, one does not need to a third lens to reach 200-300mm focal lengths. In fact, one does not need even a 85mm lens. 24-90 can do it all and be the only SL lens one would ever need.

Having bought a mint second hand SL I found your review useful and agree with much of what you said. Keep up the enthusiastic work. For anyone buying into the system now there’s now lots of Panasonic and Sigma L mount glass. One tip though is to upgrade the camera and lens firmware. Before upgrading the firmware the Panasonic 24-105, the OIS wasn’t great on the SL, with firmware 3.7 and 1.1 on the lens... perfect!

Great review. Get's me thinking about the SL even more. I totally agree with Your observations of these 'Camera Store' reviews. They 'reviewed' a couple of cameras which I own ( Leica CL, Samsung NX 500) and trashed them because that guy could not get sharp pictures out of these cameras and blamed the cameras for that. Chris Nicols should back off the booze a little to steady his hands. He's now employed by 'Dpreview' and does his 'tatter hand' stuff there.

not keen on anything that messes with the view like focus peaking. absolutely love the manual focus on my new leica X. a real surprise when i found it. grab the lens and a focus patch appears let go and it vanishes. it's breathtakingly good. best feature on the camera I think ;-)

Great review Take', I think for a leica, its essential that you talk about the camera, the button layout and everything, We want to know what we paid for, and hey as far as image quality, I am dead certain this will produce, it may be slow in AF and 4K and what not, but image is dead on gorgeous. I own the Leica T and although its slow and its rubbish when you focus with magnification on, the images from it is super nice, I did the calculation and it has the same pixel density of a FF sensor that is 24MP! So it produces same quality although only 16MP, I found it more than enough, I an't selling it, never. I thank Take for explaining on the EVF with the the lens stepped down all the way. For me it should be a problem, the EVF sees what the sensor sees, so when it does become dim, if the sensor is not sensitive enough like the A7S, you will see noise and lag, right? thankfully Leica makes some great FAST primes that should aid in letting as much light in. I hated the SL for its huge size and bulk and still do but I find myself drawn to the EVF. I think now its reasonably priced, I know its still expensive but not 'leica expensive' they did drop the price down and come another year or and SL2, the price may come down a little more, I will grab one then. Am going to pop down to my local leica store and give it a try, have seen enough reviews and now its time to give it a test! For me I think the EVF will bring me closer to the thing I love most, critical manual focus, and nothing gets more challenging than focusing at f/0.95! I was also worried about the 400 shutter count per full charge, I think that if you think before you shoot, you will shoot less and majority of your shots will be a winner each time. Thats one way to make the shots count and still have enough juice left.

Great mid review. As an owner of the A7RII w/ 40mm minolta rokkor and 50mm summilux, a lot of similarities exist between this leica under review and the Sony. Technical marvels aside, shooting experience are very similar. If you ever reviewed an A7RII with M lenses I seriously think you'll see how good that Sony is for price versus the Leica.
@bigheadtaco

+Mykoue Yang I know 100% that the Sony A7 series is the best bang for buck on any mirrorless series. But as I mentioned using a car analogy, when someone wants to buy a Bentley or a Rolls Royce, it's hard to convince the buyer to look at a Lexus or even a BMW. There's more to a purchasing decision than just features or performance. The only person I would recommend the SL to is an existing Leica camera owner with an investment into their lens system, or someone with lots of money who wants a luxury camera. For the the rest of us, the Sony, Fuji and Olympus/Panasonic mirrorless systems are the best value :-)

Take, as you mentioned in the video, shooting stopped down with adapted lenses is far from ideal on an EVF. i'm excited about the XPRO2 as its OVF is a legitimate workaround for this issue. you'll be zone focusing of course, but that's necessary for quick street photography regardless. i'd be very interested to see your impressions of shooting m-mount on the X-PRO2 stopped down with the OVF.

Take, my dealer is working on me about the SL. Given that I won't buy the monster AF lens, but use my M lenses, can you do a video about the process of using M or other MF lenses with the SL, as this will be the way that I will be using it and that it is a large chunk of cash to shoot that way.
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 8 лет назад
+Calvin Chann I probably won't revisit the SL again until the 50mm Lux comes out. However, in each video I have mentioned using the M adapter with the SL. A local Leica user shoots exclusively with his M lenses on his newly acquired SL and he loves it. He is in the process of selling his M240 because he loves shooting with the SL so much. It's much easier to focus (focus peaking, zoom, the beautiful EVF). The only issue really is shooting in low light and having the lens stopped down, but that's a very specific thing to studio photography. Is there anything specific you want to know about shooting the SL with the M Adapter T?

How much of an issue is the lack of weather sealing on the M lenses compared to SL lenses?
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 3 года назад
if you consider the older lenses, people used them in all sorts of weather, but that was back in the film days. No electronics. So my guess is if you're shooting digital, I would be weary of using in inclement weather, more so the body versus the lenses

the SL is easier in general, but it depends on your background, skill level, focal length used and subject matter your shooting. I say if you haven't come from a rangefinder background, and you're shooting anything over 50mm, go with the SL.

Amazing mid review Take! Loving the photos you took. Do you remember what aperture you used for the mural shot with the 40mm Rokkor?
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 8 лет назад
+Bryan Campbell because the camera does not read the aperture info on non-Leica pre-digital lenses, it doesn't show. My guess is f/4 or f/5.6. That's the sweet spot of that lens. As long as the sun is behind you, the lens has no issues. If you're shooting towards the sun, this lens has really bad flare. It was Minolta's first generation lens coating, which the Leica versions did not have. My 28mm is completely unusable. The 40mm is fine as long as you stop down, and the 90mm is perfect wide open.

obvious IQ, dynamic range and high ISO performance upgrade with the SL. However, I prefer the handling, size-weight-to-feature ratio and IBIS on the X-H1. Manual focusing is also easier on the X-H1. I love both cameras though and wouldn't hesitate to use either.

of course like your review's - but found some things I like to comment on. Professional - Matt Granger said very well that professional cameras are for people who earn there money with it. therefore there should all the quick service (repair) available. I know so many people who need to send there Leica back to Germany to wait 2 month until they know what's actually broken. (Apparently many think's can break on a Leica) It's not professional how good that feels in your hand. Then - Many Leica m user I know got the new Sony 7...because of the viewfinder, the Iso and and and...it's so much cheaper as the Leica. Even they appreciate the Leica glass they not really into buying expansive (quickly outdated) cameras anymore (still having a M in the dry cabinet). ...anyway - i wish i could get me a Leica m262. because of the olden days. ...the SL no need.
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 8 лет назад
+Arnd san thanks for your comment and you bring up a good point. One perspective is that whatever camera a professional photographer gravitates towards using makes it into a 'pro' camera. Another perspective is that a manufacturer builds a specific camera that targets 'pros' and the features they are looking for. Then there are those that feel that if they by a 'pro' camera then they are professional or that it adds more legitimacy to their work. I think all 3 perspectives in isolation is totally the wrong perspective. Personally I don't really care what anyone calls any camera. In my commercial work, I've made more money using my iPhone, which makes it my most professional tool for me. But I would never call my iPhone a 'pro-camera'. At the same time, just because you buy a Nikon D5 doesn't make you more legit or make your images better. A camera is only a tool. The only thing professional is that fact you make money from it. Saying all this, many cameras are clearly targeting professionals in specific fields due to certain specs. This doesn't make the camera better than other cameras that don't have those same specs, and people shouldn't be fooled into thinking that buying a pro-spec camera makes them better photographers. The opposite is usually the case. Pro-spec anything tends to be narrowly focused and rarely accommodates a variety of applications. Most pro photographers I know leave their pro gear at home when they are not working because they are too cumbersome to carry and too narrowly functional for everyday use. I hope this clarifies my review of the Leica SL. I'm not saying this is better just because it has pro specs.
@arndsan
@arndsan 8 лет назад
+bigheadtaco thank's for the long reply. I find it great how you care for this cameras : ). Really like your "different" reviews. but I found it a bit "not so good" how you repeat Leica's marketing vocabulary. I just wonder where we have the 'Pro Specs" at this camera. Seems it's very average for 2016. Can't do anything special then feeling sturdy. Got problems you have to work around... Feels that the camera is so expansive that Leica tell us that this is because it's "pro". I wonder why photographer have to pay this price. In Hong Kong the camera most used by pros is the canon 5. Mark 3. Seem that this covers "pro spec".
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 8 лет назад
Arnd san I know the SL is marketing pros because of both the build quality and also feature set, such as full size HDMI and USB 3.0 connections, high 2gb 11fps 33 DNG RAW burst mode, highest resolution EVF on the market, highest level weather sealing on any mirrorless camera currently available, etc. This is a pro-mirrorless, not to be confused with DSLR which is different. The number one spec of a professional camera that is targeting professional photographers is the build quality. I've personally used a camera so much that after 2 years the non-pro camera fell apart. That's after 2 seasons of shooting pro sports, shooting countless weddings and commercial assignments, etc. My pro body lasted 10 years, and it still works today. When new cameras came out with better and faster features, the pro body still lasted longer and could handle the abuse of daily use. This is something you can't read off of a spec sheet. The second feature is usually in the input-output accessories, both support from 3rd party and the manufacturers. The price of the Leica is inconsequential to Leica when it comes to being professional or not. There are many Leica cameras that costs more than the SL that are not categorized as pro by Leica themselves, and neither do they market it as such. Leica is like Bentley or Rolls Royce. They are a luxury brand and it is marketed to a very small segment of pro photographers. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they don't exist or that the SL is not designed for professional use. If you can't afford it, it's not meant for you. As a working professional, if you are not making enough money to pay for the equipment you are using, then you shouldn't buy any system you can't afford. The Canon 5D is a great camera because it has the features that professionals need at the price they can afford. The 1D has always been the model above the 5D, but who cares? Also, Canon and Nikon are probably 80% of the pro market so it's easy to see why you see so many Canons around, considering their EOS legacy goes back to the 1980's. I am not defending the Leica SL, there's no need to. A camera is a camera is a camera. I am only defending my assessment of it. It is my viewpoint based on my experience with many cameras over many years, which you have every right to disagree with. The Leica SL is marketed towards professionals. I don't say it's pro because Leica tells me to say it. I say it because I've used and shot with enough pro equipment to know when a camera is being marketed to pros or not.

I'm sure it is not an issue on leica SL (lice on others leica cameras), but it is very big advantage against Sony, cos you literally can't fully use some wide LM lenses with a Sony A7R/A7R2/A7/A72. Leica cameras and the Sony A7S/A7S2 is the only exclusion from the color-shift issue. Please google it and you'll have something more to tell in your next video. Anyway, thank you for review!

how about battery life?

Pretty good battery life. Shot all day and still had juice. However, I wasn't using the AF lens which will use more power. I'm waiting for the new 50mm to review.

Do u get fokus peaking with this novoflex?I dont see any red lines in my SL using this
@bigheadtaco

there is focus peaking on the SL, but I don't know what the Novoflex does. The non-Leica lenses attached to the SL worked with peaking, so I don't see an issue unless it's the mount adapter

Your reviews are not to my taste. You spent 22 minutes talking. We want to see the camera in action and images. I want to know what benefits and challenges it presents in real life. Wether in a studio, street or landscape setting. Not a man talking about how much he loves his Leica SL for 22 minutes.

+Abdullah Jamil thanks for at least giving me a chance. There are a lot of other reviewers you can watch on RU-vid so enjoy them too. I'm sure many of them will suit your taste.

yes, quite agree, and that "click" noise he makes is quite annoying, just press the SHUTTER BUTTON !!, and show us the camera , not all this twat, the net isn't a talk show or a romance drama for heavens sake!!

Organize what you want to say better and your video would be half as long!
