Thx for checking out this review vid afam! My Leica SL2 concept video can be watched here -ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VGjtDq4pljE.html
I like how you talk about the feelings of holding the SL2. Feelings are critical, when you buy things. I had a Sony A7R2, and it felt like holding some mass produced electronic thingy which looks outdated after 5 years. The SL, on the other hand, feels like a real thing, almost like a little modern art masterpiece that will still look and feel good in 50 years.
I just got mine. I know this is not everything, I am all about cameras being tools and that´s all really but I can say even the buying experience was really something since I have become close with the people in the Mexico City store after attending some events and they're really adorable people. It was a really happy moment. When I opened the box and got the camera out of the plastic it was like wow... Loved the polished and sleek finish and I had already tried it so I really like the image quality in the first place but the camera design was like.. wow. Really an experience as you mention.
I often think that people who complain at the cost also don’t get that these are handmade by people who make a good living at Leica and have been there for decades as opposed to mass produced in China by a low paid work force. That makes a big difference in cost!
I have a soft heart for Leica. My dad had one from the 50s. I got to shoot with it when I was a kid. I almost bought the SL2. But I came to the realization I did not have enough money to buy all the things Leica I wanted for my camera kit. But if I went Nikon Z I could get pretty much all the things I wanted. I guess I should have been a brain surgeon and then I could've satisfied my Leica desires.
The Camry and McLaren Analogy was completely misplaced here because McLaren actually have a technological and engine power edge over a Camry. Leica can't hold a candle technologically or for sheer horsepower over a Canon R5 or a Sony A1. Come up with a better analogy.
Since it's the SL2, I think a better car analogy, because it's German of course, would be the Mercedes SLS. Just my opinion. I do hope to use one some day. Even just hold it and feel the hand made quality. I'm jealous of your Leica experience, but glad you got to have it!
The SL2-S is something like 25% cheaper. Still more than I can justify, but it is now on my radar as a possible "when the SL3 comes out and the old models fall in price" purchase.
It's easy. You buy one. Grab all your other digitals and buy a body and a cheap manual lens then yku save up and buy a quality lens. Wait until you get into the S series... Medium Format files are just amazing
Hi there! Thank you for this great video! Being a happy owner of Q2 im struggling to choose between Sl2 and Sl2-S… if you don’t mind- what will be your best choice between those two to companion Q2? Thank you!
there’s no debating whether or not leica makes great stuff; they absolutely do. the question is it worth DOUBLE the second most expensive cameras on the market (sony a1, canon r5, etc.) i think it’s a huge mistake to make people feel like they need to spend $10k to find a camera that they’ll have a “human connection” to.
yes you NAILed it :D That comparison with cars is really good, it made me understand it. (Cause honestly I always listened to people saying Leica is for lawyers and doctors with a lot of money, but the price isn't justified, and apparently a lot of people have this opinion) When I saw how Koenigsegg made cars, I also undestood why they cost millions. It's all handwork. And as I saw your art film and now hearing what you said about the videos and photos, I really comprehendable. Thanks for the video! Hope more people see and understand it (and I hope to get to use a Leica one day myself hihi)
The comparison with cars didn't really make any sense, because the Leica is like the price tag of the McLaren but the performance and technology of the Corolla. Cameras like the Sony a1 and Canon r5 blow this thing out of the water when it comes to performance and what it gives the user. $10k and it doesn't even have a flip out screen? Give me a break. Magnesium body? Yes, they all have that, even the Z5 that costs 1/10th the price.
@@RiposteThis Or….for those who consider other variables, e.g., haptics, engineering, user interface. You can enjoy what you like without concern for the choices of others. 👍🏼
Your photo edits remind me of what I've seen of the Teal&Orange of the Sigma fp series cameras. They use the same L mount, so may be worth getting. When I can justify and afford one, I'll get one, but chose to start with the S1R since it's pretty much the same as the SL2. I'm planning to use the 65mm, 24mmF3.5 and 28-70mm compact zoom with these smaller fp L and TL cameras.
Some time ago I had the opportunity to try the previous model, the Leica SL (and if it hadn't been for Covid I would have definitely tried the SL2-S), and the sensations were very similar to what you experienced. Holding it in my hand I felt the solidity of the machine, the build quality and its ergonomics (even the weight, to be honest :-)) During the test I used two lenses, the 24-90 you used and the (fantastic) Summilux 50mm f1.4; needless to say that the image quality left me breathless both in the photographic and video field: I preferred the 'Natural' profile, however, the log instead I found it still a bit 'immature', but I believe that with the following versions it has improved . Of course, I still consider it an overprice camera but not too much if you consider that the Panasonic SH1 does not cost much less and moreover, as you rightly pointed out, we must consider the fact that Leica produces exclusively in Germany rather than relocating the production process to countries where labor costs less. . In conclusion, would I buy it? Rationally not, but if one day I had to go crazy, I really think I will do it for a Leica SL-2S
@@robertstacy8438 I didn’t know there was a SL2-S until I was testing the SL2 but I definitely want to try that one next! I hear its better in low light which is how I shoot mostly so it could be better for me.
First time! Yay! I’m glad to hear I got to open you up to a different perspective. I do that quite often on my channel, so welcome. I’m happy you’re here :)
Nice superb video in the conclusion I saw a text somewhere review of this camera by a man B&H or Adorama who wrote (I am 70 years and finally own one and so happy .So for me there is Hope I am 65 now so I am going to filling up my moneypiggie oh no Money Elephant and at 70 I can buy my own Leica SL series .I do like or shoot I say LEIC(A) made also a Reporter version of this series S named with 24,5 MP .
@@hellatightdude I like young women too. At least we can afford to have nice things and get what we want. You young guys can get as jealous as you want. We have worked hard for what we have.
Also - at least with Leica you're buying into design or technology that's proprietary to the company (body design, internals, colour science/DSP). Unlike RED - who tells people that their Mini-mag cards use proprietary rapid storage technology which is just a $2 connector. Allowing them to charge $2350 for an SSD rather than the normal $150 street price. Don't worry I'm not butt-hurt, please see below. Granted - the people shopping for Leicas and Reds have the money to pay for such things so it's a moot point to that audience. "Why do they charge this much?" - because they can, and the business model is working for them.
The color science, optics, build process, and fit and finish all matter in factoring the price and that is not just a "because they can" kind of thing. The costs associated with the build process, the engineering, and the size and scale of the company mean that the unit cost of a Leica vs. a Fuji, Canon, Nikon is just more to begin with. But yes, there is also a red dot premium to go on top of that. But until you try it, it is just hypothetical. For years and years I was a Leica hater, but now I am a complete covert and sold all of my Nikon and Fuji kit. I am not saying everyone will have that experience or if they don't, they don't get it etc., It's not a snobbery kind of thing, but it definitely like finding your tribe. It's painfully expensive but it also delivers a kind of joy in use that I just didn't get from other brands. On the one hand, it doesn't make you a better photographer, but Leicas and their minimalistic feature sets force you to bring your A game, which in turn leads to better outcomes. The fit and finish make you just want to use the thing all the time, which means getting out and doing more with it, which in turn improves your game. And the color science delivers serious differences - Atolas comment about the reds for example is one area where my Nikons and my Fuji XT's struggled, especially in low light. But here's the thing about the money part - they say marry the glass, date the body, and that is definitely true in Nikon, Fuji, Canon world. However, I have found that with Leica bodies, it may not be for life, but it is definitely a long term relationship, and there's not as much need to upgrade when the next model comes out. The analogy I will use here is shoes, instead of the aforementioned cars: but a handmade pair of shoes and they will last you decades. Buy a pair of cheap shoes, and you will spend as much, if not more than if you had just spent the extra money in the first place. Or if you are a fan of advertising, look up the famous Bell Helmets ad - "If you're head is worth $10, buy a $10 helmet." Lastly, there is the issue of community, which is also referenced in the video. I can't tell you how many incredibly talented photographers I have met because I was carrying a Leica. Rarely happened with a Nikon. What is that worth and how do you quantify that? It's led to some awesome collaboration, friendships, and exposure to work that is changing who I am and how I see the world. So hard to put a price on that but it is definitely a gateway into a different world. I'll pay the admission price for that.
@@robertstacy8438 Yeah - honestly it's a hybrid of "Because they can and because they MUST", especially considering the time taken to research, design, and manufacture the technology but also partner with suppliers in the supply chain who will charge premiums for moving and storing small volumes. Premiums are extracted at every step of the supply chain in niche markets that are invisible to all end-users. Thank you for sharing your insights as a Leica user and I'm glad it has brought you joy in your life which has intrinsic value that cannot be quantified. Hey.... Also kudos to the shoe analogy. I also try to adhere to the BIFL (Buy it For Life) policy and shoes are absolutely the best comparison. Those Allen Edmonds might be north of $500 but they will last you decades with less impact to the environment and you will build character with the shoes via personal experiences and places. Same as the Leica.
@@shogun545 Nothing like a solid pair of shoes with character. That's a whole different rabbit hole of money, nuance, and preference - and another tribe, but one which I love as well. Thanks for the thoughtful response.
@@robertstacy8438 well said!!. I also jumped into the Leica world with an SL2S and a Q2. I now also have an M10 R and a 50 1.4 summilux. I’ve been out shooting every weekend in NYC, and take the Q2 everywhere I go. I never did that with my Sony cameras (although an unbelievable system).
The Leica is expensive because of the name, same with Hasselblad, lets just be honest with that one. The body is made with the same alloy that all other $1k and up cameras use, it's not good for video because the screen doesn't tilt so have fun getting those low shots, unless of course you want to spend another few hundred dollars to add an Atmos, which is absurd. The ISO range is pretty standard. It has such a small amount of AF points for a camera that costs this much, and the AF system is pretty bad. It's worse than Fuji or Nikon. There is literally 0 reason to buy this camera other than to say you have a Leica. And the car analogy doesn't work because you're paying the price tag of the McLaren but getting the performance of a Honda Civic. Everyone should save themselves $3000 and buy the Canon r5, you'll get a better camera all around, in literally every single sense, plus you can buy a couple amazing Canon lenses with the money you save.
