Thanks for your review of this very interesting camera. Your comments about the advantages of a monochrome sensor versus Bayer matrix make sense. As you point out, the Bayer matrix is a compromise where you sacrifice some quality for convenience. That is why the best color astronomical color images are taken through monochrome sensors like the one on this Leica. They end up taking separate exposures taken through red, green, and blue filters and then subsequently combine them through software to yield color. This gives better colors and more detail than the same images taken with Bayer matrix cameras.

Yes, even though modern Bayer sensor cameras are really good, they can't match monochrome sensor in sharpness.

The The image quality there should not be different from the one obtained with the color setting on the same camera. I would even add that shooting in monochromatic mode allows you to see in BW but also limits you to 256 shades of gray as it is a JPG. Processing your raw file (color) to BW should give you better quality.

Well, let me just say that I love Leica cameras and I'm not a dentist or a snob. I'm a social worker, low on the socioeconomic ladder. However, photography is my passion and I have a M246 which is the monochrome version preceding the M10. The files are gorgeous. I also, shoot Olympus and love it, too. Of course color files can be converted but my experience is that it takes a LOT of post processing to come close to a true monochrome file. I have shot B&W both ways and I love to go out for a day with the monochrome camera along with several color filters depending on what I'm shooting. The red filter is a lot of fun when the sky is involved. Yes, the camera's are expensive. So what? I'd rather have that than a new car or expensive jewelry. We all choose our priorities.

@MB-or8js
@MB-or8js 3 года назад
@@mattisulanto I don't think that the price represents the # of cameras sold with Leica. Actually, all M10-M cameras are constantly sold out. It is simply that Leica wants to avoid depreciation of their digital cameras by cranking up prices sky-high, and to remain seen as pure luxury brand (seen that Leica stopped making the affordable Summarit lens line).

I look forward to Part 2. I believe that this sensor has amazing dynamic range and low noise. @@wylie_photo On a Bayer sensor 50% of the pixels read green, 25% read blue and 25% read red and the final picture is interpolated from that information. A monochrome sensor can read grayscale info with each individual pixel and therefore each pixel is 100% effective and no demosaicing interpolation is needed. That's why a monochrome sensor can render more detail from the same pixel count. It has nothing to do with bit depth per se.
@BrunoChalifour

The Leica M 10 mono sensor records raw files at 14 bits = 16384 shades of gray. The BW files obtained are unique (because of the sensor) with great dynamic range (what can be retrieved from the shadows is surprising). It is the best sensor of the current market regarding extreme ISOs. One can work comfortably at 12500 ISO!

You are right color filters are as useful with this camera as with BW film except that the photosites are less sensitive to blue light than silver halides so even without a yellow filter you can get clouds in the sky ;o) Personally I often use a yellow filter; I know others who use an orange one for more dramatic contrast/effect (see the reddotforum / Leica Miami RU-vid channel for more information).

You make a good point though: processing a monochromatic file is not as flexible as transforming a color file into a BW in a sophisticated image-processing program. One has to know one's tools, their pros and cons and use them for what they can do best. From the description of the way you work you should stick a a Bayer sensor and a BW conversion.

??? "it's beautiful if they are slightly blown" WTF in two sentences you contradict yourself.... !!! If so (it's beautiful if the highlights are slightly blown") why bother exposing for the highlights with a monochrome camera, just blow the highlights away "because it's beautiful". On a more serious note all it takes is set the exposure compensation between -1 and -2. That easy.

I have a Leica CL film camera (I know there's a new Leica CL APS-C L-Mount camera) and it's really neat to use, but many purists would call it "not a real Leica" because it's made in Japan by Minolta. It's still cool given the fact that it's full manual, and the fact that I have to use a light metering app to know what exposure settings to use... it's probably less interesting as a camera than the Minolta CLE which had auto-shutter effectively giving the camera aperture priority exposure, but it needed a battery to function - the CL is basically clockwork. Regardless... the camera came with a Leitz Summicron-C 40mm f/2 and an Elmar-C 90mm f/4, and the viewfinder only has frame lines for 40/50/90, but I've been looking into 3rd party lenses for M-Mount and there are reasonably priced competing lenses out there. The first is Voigtländer, who do make a good variety of lenses for M-Mount, not forgetting their own Bessa line of rangefinders that are M-Mount. Then there's Zeiss and the ZM line of lenses, which are priced probably in line with Zeiss' Touit APS-C lenses, but that's still a great deal cheaper than Leica lenses, and at the great advantage that Zeiss optics are great, no matter what system you're using.

@vaska00762 3 года назад
@@mattisulanto Yeah, the CL is surprisingly nice to use. I do find it strange that the CL was made in an era when Leica wanted to sell more cameras and lenses, and entered into a deal with Minolta to outsource construction of a camera that'd be cheaper and appeal to a wider market. Well... the idea worked, but I suspect Leica probably found that the CL outsold M cameras. Regardless... I do find that is possible to enjoy M-Mount rangefinders at a reasonable budget, and I think more people should know about it. Ultimately, making photography more affordable can only be a good thing, as it introduces more people into photography as a hobby, and maybe even a profession.

@@vaska00762 The CL came out while Leica was selling the M5, which was a failure. I understand Leica discontinued the CL because it was too successful and people preferred it more than the M5. Then they introduced the M6 and quit the CL. It probably didn't go exactly like that, but thereabouts😀
@vaska00762
@vaska00762 3 года назад
@@mattisulanto yeah, I understand that in killing the CL, Minolta produced the CLE as a successor model, complete with autoexposure. Minolta also made a variety of M-Rokkor lenses for the CL and later the CLE. They're hard to find, but still highly sought after. It'll be interesting to see what Leica make for their "new" film camera, but given the price it's going to be sold at, I'm not sure if Leica understands the market for the current "film revival" (which is mostly young people buying used cameras from flea markets, eBay and thrift stores).
@BrunoChalifour
@BrunoChalifour 2 года назад
1-The Leica CL also uses a battery for its light-meter so an independent light-meter may not be necessary unless the CL light-meter is broken (which happens). The batteries are not common anymore and you may need to get an adapter in order to use more recent batteries for it. In terms of even more reasonably priced M-mount lenses you should look into 7artisans and TTArtisan. Both are Chinese brand names, the build quality is remarkable for the price. TTArtisan does slightly better the 7artisans, their 35 mm f 1.4 (a perfect 35 mm summilux look-alike) and 75 mm f 1.25 are remarkable for the price.

Iphones are built in by near slave laborers that don’t even have the freedom to commit suicide, run by an autocratic regime that knows how to keep their people in check. Leicas are also full frame with a huge lens library. You can get them used as their durability makes them last fir a fraction of what they were used. Comparing to an iphone is no real argument, as you can also argue for the price, leicas have no cellular antennas or app library or computational photography software. @@29jug11 Hi Toy Maker, The M10 Monochrom and the M10 are two very different cameras: different sensor,s different software, so I do not think that the glance you had at your friend's camera has anything to do with the M10 mono experience and results. Have you tried to take the same image with your GX9 and your friend's M10 on a A3 sheet of paper, that alone would be helpful for a true comparison if you ever wanted to really compare those two cameras. (if you did, please share the results). Now the advantages of a 40 Mp monochrome 2020 full-frame sensor go far beyond what the GX9 can do. I have used GF and GX cameras with several Leica-signed lenses too but in terms of definition, dynamic range, and noiseless high ISOs the M10 mono is a totally different league, a league of its own in fact. Now up to 400 ISO and if you do not print your images bigger than A3, I agree with you, the GXes are neat camera. Small with small lenses (compared to DSLRs or Leica Ms), very convenient while traveling. But on a A3+ the difference between the GX9 and the Leica M10 mono is simply obvious and it gets more and more obvious if you print bigger. Now in terms of using 1600, 3200, 6400, 12800 ISO there is definitely no point in comparing the two cameras, they do not play in the same league either. As far as far as street photography is concerned, and I have done that for decades, a Leica M is definitely the best camera to use because of its optical viewfinder (and its absence of autofocus as well as a clearly engraved depth of field scale on the lenses which makes using hyperfocal distance easy and beats any autofocus system). PS : I tried to look for your images in Ephotozine but without a direct link it is as easy as looking for a needle in a hay-stack. I tried though. All the best.

I have used Fujifilm cameras since the X-T1 release. The Acros mode is beautiful and the lenses are easily best in price range. I am extremely lucky to be due inheritance money and still will buy this camera - Leica experience and lenses alone are reasons why people love them. The lenses have a look no other brand can replicate. Fujifilm and other Japanese lenses the the Japanese look. Leica has always been the best. But one thing that really has me on the fence at the moment is Leicas absolutely horrible turn around times for service. If you ever have an issue with lens or rangefinder calibration you are looking at 3-6 months which is an absolute disgrace considering the cost of the items. Many have said they have been without cameras for ridiculous time frames on all forums. This puts a sour taste in my mouth considering all Japanese manufacturers can have a device back in maximum 3 weeks

In order to make such a comment you would have to look at prints under the same light. On a RU-vid channel screen such comparisons are ludicrous. In order to be able to compare whichever two objects wouldn't it be reasonable to have used both under the same conditions? Otherwise what's the point? Reassure yourself that your XT-1 is a good camera? Of course it was in its category and time but you are comparing it with a full-frame sensor and a technology that is at least 5 years more advanced. What do you expect?

1-since 1932 HCB always used Leicas so I think he would still be using one (probably offered by Leica ;o) [in fact the code name that Leica gave to the first M Monochrom was "Henri") 2-Making one digital full-frame rangefinder is one thing (just the rangefinder is not a cheap item) then designing a whole series of lenses (to maintain the compactness of camera+lens and compete with Leica) for it is another matter. I think even Sony seems to be giving up on his full-frame mirrorless compact camera.

@@mattisulanto You have answered the question right there. It costs Leica not much more to produce a camera than any other, say twice due to relatively low production volumes. So they charge between eight and ten times as much per camera for less features. The profit margin must be at least five times what other make over variable costs if not fixed costs including overheads. They basically make profits where others more concerned with market share but without the cache make little or even less than nothing, having to compete in a declining market on price.

I know everyone likes to delude themselves with the retired dentists are the only people who buy Leica and there is no doubt a certain contingent of customer who sees having the camera is a status symbol, like a Louis Vuitton bag. Nevertheless, a lot of photographers, myself included, buy them and use them daily. As the video states, the viewfinder of the Leica is a dividing experience, as are the cameras, their perceived value, the lenses - everything about Leica really. For me, Leica's constraints are its benefits. Also, though I did not expect this when I first started using them, Leica has brought me in contact with so many great photographers whom I have met on the street - because either they or I have asked about their camera. Now that sounds idiotic, but I have started some great collaborations because of this. I like being part of that community.

I am convinced that this snobbish camera will appeal especially to the seriously wealthy collector. The cult of the German brand name Leica has long since lost its home and its content. The real black-and-white photo artist still distinguished between pan- and orthochromatic film emulsions and could use color filters to influence color contrasts. Today, every digital photographer can creatively design black-and-white works of art and is vastly superior to the Leica M10 owner. An aberration that, like every aberration, will be short. - But thank you for reviewing us the totally overpriced and anyway "disabled" camera!
@MB-or8js
@MB-or8js 3 года назад
I agree that the M10 value and of Leica in general is no longer even closely representative to the technical value of the gear. I do a lot of B&W shooting, but still prefer film for this purpose. The digital monochrome Leica cameras are suitable tools if sb can't easily develop films on his/her own or doesn't want to bother with film in general. The main difference to a std digital M camera is that the removed Bayer pattern on the sensor gives you an additional stop in low light situations. The M10-M additionally offers very high ISO - if you need it (I don't).
@BrunoChalifour
@BrunoChalifour 2 года назад
I think you are not quite understanding what a monochrome camera produces and the similarities between it and a film camera using BW film. Moreover your view of "real" BW photographers might be slightly outdated (some, not that many, still use film but a lot use digital and I would not be surprised if this was the majority of "real BW photographers" now. The M10 Monochrom is the third monochrome camera that Leica has produced in 12 years so it is not just a fad. I know a lot of "real" photographers that do use Monochrom Leicas (even some Magnum members). Now if you look at the price of medium format digital cameras you will see that either they play in the same space or they are far more expensive and they are not collectors' items. The definition of the M10 mono is such that it can easily compete with 50 Mp medium format cameras (with a far greater portability and greater choice of lenses, except for zooms of course). I would be curious to know who still produces orthochromatic film (fewer and fewer that is for sure), how available this film now is and who uses it. Scientific use may be but I doubt that "real BW photographers" do in numbers. Color filters are also used on an M10 mono as it only records light intensities exactly as BW film does.
