Leilah Babirye is an artist whose journey began when she traveled to Fire Island, New York, with no money, but eventually found an apartment with a friend's help. She stayed there for six months, taking care of the friend's baby and creating art on small pieces of paper. Through dedication and hard work, her art expanded from these small canvases to larger ones, eventually leading to the concept of queer passport photos, which she has used to challenge the traditional protocol of passport photos, which often require people to look a certain way.
Leilah Babirye has also drawn much of her creative inspiration from her time in Harlem, where she collected cans to make money and found a sense of familiarity with African cultures.
Her advice to any young artist is to never stop working. It’s the only way to stay visible, have something to show and get noticed one day.
Leilah Babirye's art is a reflection of her optimistic outlook and determination to never give up and never take No as an answer. She has used her art to express her thoughts and feelings, as well as to explore her own identity. Her story is one of resilience, perseverance and strength, and her art is an ongoing journey of inspiration and challenge that serves as a reminder of the power of the human spirit. She has used her art to bring awareness to social issues, to challenge gender roles, and to create a space for self-expression. Leilah Babirye's art is an important example of how art can be used to create change and challenge norms, and to inspire others to do the same.
