"I developed the Remote Control primarily as a swinging fly, but it has spent its fair share of time under a bobber or behind a dry fly too. I tied it to be versatile; it works great as an imitation for a variety of mayflies, especially Blue Wings and PMD's. Tied in smaller sizes, it works as a midge emerger too. And in the larger sizes, it will also produce during a caddis hatch.
I really like fishing the Remote Control on my two-handed rod. It works well when you can get it down and keep it under tension. The foam wings help the pattern 'emerge' as you swing it downstream. This fly has a ton of movement and I try to tie it particularly sparse to help that."
- Andy Leister, Vail Valley Anglers
And why name it the "Remote Control"? The pattern's wings are made of the ultra-thin shipping foam used to package electronics, like remote controls.
In this video, Umpqua Feather Merchants Signature Tyer and Vail Valley Anglers guide Andy Leister takes us through the process of tying his Remote Control Soft Hackle from start to finish.
