Euphemia's death is such a tragedy because she is among the only people who genuinely cared and wanted to make a positive change. Seeing the Japanese chanting against her while she doesn't understand what she's done and thinks her plan worked is one of the most gutwrenching moments of the show. The only real solace I can find in Euphemia's death is that she died believing she managed to make the world a better place, with Suzaku by her side.

Don't forget she was also aware that Zero shot her, but her fractured mind couldn't comprehend why. She died thinking her beloved brother suddenly decided to kill her for no apparent reason. And still she wouldn't betray his secret, nor harboured any ill will towards him, instead focusing all her dwindling willpower on the masses she wished to help. Are you crying yet?

Lelouch does have a lot of similarities with Light Yagami, but a key difference that separates them is that Lelouch isn't delusional. Light started with good intentions but got quickly swept up in his god-complex and by the end of his life, he only truly cared about himself. Lelouch doesn't have a god complex. He's fully aware of the amount of blood on his hands and doesn't fool himself into believing he was exempt from his crimes like Light. Lelouch believes that in the end, he's going to make the world into a gentler, kinder world for his sister, and is willing to do whatever it takes.

The worst thing about Euphemia dying that I never see brought up is that she literally just gave Suzaku a reason to live, assurance that he is allowed to have happiness, and validating that his struggle so far had actually been worth something. She became the one beacon of hope in his life and was snuffed out in the most traumatizing way possible.

@saltyk9869
@saltyk9869 11 месяцев назад
I'm not really sure how closely related the others are. Euphy doesn't seem to differentiate between half siblings and full siblings, and even Cornelia is upset about the deaths of Clovis, Lelouch, and Nunally, despite at least two of them being half siblings. Is there anything that clears that up? I know the oldest sibling is like 30 or 40 (seems to have a daughter around the age of Nunally).
@Megalomaniac_Trans_Lesbian
@Megalomaniac_Trans_Lesbian 11 месяцев назад
@@saltyk9869 My interpretation of it is that some of the royal kids (Cornelia, Euphy, Nunnally...) love all their half siblings on principle, but they also love their full blooded siblings more due to all being taught that blood matters more than anything or something similar, which would definitely make sense for Brittanian royals. I do believe that Euphy loves Cornelia more than anyone else just like Cornelia loves her, or Lelouch and Nunnally love each other, but that it's just not always shown very well during the story. But it would explain how she can just completely ignore all the awful things Cornelia does on a daily basis even though she cares about the Numbers
@orpheus4694
@orpheus4694 10 месяцев назад
@@saltyk9869 They all have different mothers because the emperor has many wives (consorts). Lelouch and Nunnally have the same mother, Cornelia and Euphy have the same mother as well. However, they were still very close. There are still frames in the series and a CD drama that showed Euphy was extremely close with both Lelouch and Nunnally as kids, often having sleepovers. Clovis was also close with Lelouch as evidenced by their frequent chess matches when Lelouch was young, and Clovis even did a painting of him, Nunnally, and Marianne. So even though they're half-siblings, they still had a degree of closeness as kids. Spoilers about the eldest brother: Idk where you got the info that he had a kid, but he got engaged to the Tian Zi in R2 so I doubt he has one. It's not revealed in the series if he has a wife or a child.
@saltyk9869
@saltyk9869 10 месяцев назад
@@orpheus4694 That's what I mean. I don't know how many wives/consorts the Emperor has. The only full siblings we know for a fact are Lelouch and Nunnally and Euphemia and Cornelia. I'd be curious which other ones are full. Yes, I'm talking about the First Prince, Odysseus. I was thinking that Carine was his daughter. She's approximately the same age as Nunnally at 15. There's a scene where he talks to her and I always thought it came across like a father. However, a look at the Wiki says they are half siblings. Just because he got engaged doesn't mean he wouldn't have a kid. I mean Charles has like 30 kids with different women. You think he couldn't get engaged to a woman, especially for a political purpose?

In my humble opinion, I consider this episode to be one of the best overall of the series. The first season doesn't have many aesthetically and narratively rich shots, but in this episode there are tons of them due to the fantastic direction. Without a doubt, you can get several impressive visual postcards from here. The narrative is not far behind either. I would like to highlight my three favorite moments. 1. Lelouch/Zero shoots Euphemia in front of a helpless Suzaku. This moment will mark a turning point in Lelouch and Suzaku's narrative arcs. On Suzaku's side, long before, he was already being consumed by the guilt of having killed his father and, furthermore, of the oppression suffered by the Japanese. The watch that saved Suzaku's life in the first episode and we see it from time to time is the symbol of all the guilt. For Suzaku, time stopped at that moment and he couldn't move forward. However, in this episode, he abandons that watch and wears Euphemia's insignia, becoming his new symbol of guilt, why? Because the SAZ massacre is a much worse traumatic event in more ways than one. Broadly speaking, we could say that the insignia becomes a permanent reminder that he failed his beloved and the Japanese. He couldn't rescue Euphemia or millions of Japanese from death and, to make matters worse, the resounding failure of the SAZ will lead to a rebellion that will bring more deaths. For Lelouch's side, he also feels deeply guilty for the SAZ massacre and for turning Euphemia into a genocidal one. Hence, Lelouch does not let Kallen kill her, it is her way of taking full responsibility for the tragedy. I don't think that the use of slow motion at the moment of Euphemia's shooting is just to have an impact on the viewer and allow them to digest the scene better, but rather it is to place the viewer in Lelouch's position and communicate that this is a hard and extremely painful decision for our protagonist. I think the filter confirms it 2. Euphemia's death, the tarnishing of her reputation, and the beginning of the black rebellion. The frenetic editing during this scene was absolutely brilliant and accompanying it with the sad melody "Innocent Days" gave it a rather bitter touch. If you hadn't felt bad for Euphemia and her misfortune before, here you will. While Suzaku is forced to say goodbye to his beloved and Euphemia dies believing a lie, Lelouch/Zero, his Black Knights and new Japan rise to the top at the expense of the bloodbath and Euphemia, who becomes the scapegoat for the tragedy and, at the same time, she becomes everything she is not. Euphemia goes from a sweet, kind princess who had all the best intentions to a lying and manipulative genocidal madwoman. It's extremely unfair. Until now, Suzaku had hidden many things about his past, but he had never lied to anyone and here he does it to give his beloved a peaceful rest. The important thing in this conversation is that Suzaku acquires two reasons for living, one of them being the purpose of creating a world where everyone is happy. On the other hand, Lelouch renews the determination he made in episode 13. The sacrifices of the innocent are the price to pay for changing the world and so that the blood shed is not in vain, the rebellion must be taken to its ultimate consequences. However, Lelouch doesn't feel good about using Euphemia for his benefit. Quite the opposite and now Suzaku's words in episode 19 bite Lelouch with all their force and he finds himself in his position at the beginning of the series: "When you gain results the wrong way, what are you left with in the end? Only dark regret and a deep emptiness that have nowhere to go." Ah! And, well, CC realizes how bad he's having it and offers him some comfort (still, don't trust her!). Just one more thing: CC doesn't care about Japan. Little update: Yes, Kenny! She said the same thing to Mao! How appropriate that you remembered it. I appreciate you being so attentive to details.
@AlicentviBritannia
@AlicentviBritannia 11 месяцев назад
3. The final conversation between the two friends. Easily top 3 best Code Geass scenes. As absurd as it may seem, it is the first transparent conversation that Lelouch and Suzaku have in the entire series. In a previous comment I said that fate would punish Suzaku, Euphemia and the Japanese for being naive. How would it punish Suzaku? Making him the potential murderer of his best friend. Now Suzaku finds himself in Lelouch's position at the beginning of the series: he must find the murderer of his loved one and take revenge. And Lelouch not only expresses empathy since he understands it perfectly, he accepts that it is Suzaku's duty and encourages him to fulfill it. Having broken the bond between him and his best friend, Lelouch practically has a clear path to becoming a demon. The English voice actor's laugh is deliciously manic and I love to enjoy it. At his highest point of lucidity, madness begins to take over Lelouch, but he is willing to embrace it, just like chaos and destruction. I think this scene speaks of the limits that Lelouch is willing to cross to achieve his goals.

As another commentor pointed out, there's also the fact that Euphy had only just given Suzaku a reason to live and an achievable purpose at long last, on top of validating him and his past choices and showing him that his existence and his actions mattered after all. In narrative terms, her death isn't just a tragedy because of the way many characters feel afterwards or because her plans were ruined, but also because she had just started several new arcs for herself, Suzaku, Lelouch, and the story at large, and all of them were destroyed before even reaching a third of their completion. This is exactly how a character death can absolutely ruin the audience, by happening too soon, before the characters can settle their issues and find closure, because now they'll never be able to, as we will see from Suzaku's conversation with Lelouch at the Kururugi Shrine in R2 Concerning C.C., not only did she say the same thing to Mao, she told him that while hugging him the same way she's hugging Lelouch here. And yet, things are very, *very* different between the two scenes, which she'll go on to prove in episode 25 and throughout season 2. As she says herself a few minutes later, she hasn't yet reconnected with feelings of kindness, but I do interpret her hugging here as genuine empathy and guilt, whereas when she did it with Mao, to me, it was dispassionate and robotic, a way for her to make him more likely to fulfill their contract, much as everything else she did with Mao. She was that way with Lelouch as well at first, but their relationship relationship took a very different turn after Nagoya, and especially after the amusement park, where they had two very important heart to heart conversations for her character development. But maybe I'm just reachin' And as for that phonecall, yeah, it's pretty obvious here that Suzaku knows Lelouch is Zero, and that Lelouch is aware of it. He's essentially doing his best friend one last favour by reassuring him that he has a right to come after him and try to kill him, because as you said, he fully understands his feelings at this point. As much as I despise Suzaku for multiple reasons, his and Lelouch's friendship/nemeses relationship can be the most beautiful and tragic part of this show sometimes By the by, here's something to think about. Did Suzaku just decide to type Lelouch's number into Euphy's phone to gauge his reaction, or did she save his number in her phone? And in the latter case, did she save it as Lelouch, or as Zero?...

First of all, the title of this video has the same title as the last episode "Bloodstained Euphemia", when this episode is called "At least with sorrow" Second... Double fun fact: 1. Code Geass was originally conceived as a 50-episode single-season anime. But, because the creators lost the bid for the five o'clock Saturday afternoon time slot to an anime called Ayakashi Ayashi, Code Geass had to reduce its episode count to 25. While the creators were waiting for their anime to receive approval for another season, Goro Taniguchi envisioned an alternate ending for the series that would be open-ended and psychological in nature, much like Evangelion. As we already know, Code Geass got the green light for a continuation because it was a resounding success, but I'll get to that later. 2. The etymological meaning of the name Euphemia is "Good Reputation" and in this episode the creators showed that they were aware of it and knew how to handle an exquisite tragic irony.

Their beginnings 2. Their powers 3. Their intelligence 4. The decisions they made 5. Their goals 6. Their personalities 7. How they went about their plans 8. How they treated other characters 9. Their endings (if anyone wants more points, comment under this)

Their circumstances: Lelouch mentions early on (right after the crane promise scene) that it’s only a matter of time before he and Nunnally are found out and that he can’t trust anyone at Ashford not to sell him out. Essentially, he saw it as a matter of time before something awful happened to Nunnally and many of his actions were made out of that desperation. Lelouch also only trusts Suzaku and Nunnally, however he won’t ever seek to burden Nunnally. Light on the other hand was compelled to pick up the death note and again compelled to use it, in a way he was a victim who lost his mind for Ryuk’s amusement, if I recall that correctly. I haven’t seen AoT so I can’t say.
@saltyk9869
@saltyk9869 11 месяцев назад
@@TheOriginalInferno I think this often gets overlooked. Lelouch knew he was living on borrowed time. The minute someone in the Ashford family decides that selling out Lelouch and Nunnaly was worthwhile they were finished. And we already know they were trying to get Millie in an arranged marriage to improve the family's status. Who knows what they would have done after that.
@SwordTune
@SwordTune 11 месяцев назад
People get really confused by "you may have been the first girl I ever loved," because as we have clearly established, Lelouch is terrible with his wording. They're half siblings, and Euphemia is older than Nunnaly. Cornelia has a cold personality. So Euphemia would have been the only sister that Lelouch was close to before Nunnaly was born.
@nahte123456

...debatable. Due to how the Japanese language his wording is VERY strong, FAR stronger than siblings. You could say he's just talking emotionally, but the language does not really support it.

This show is amazing because of not just what they did but also how they made it done! Just look how brilliant was the scene when Euphemia died. The peacefull music, the contrast in words, whenever Euphemia asked about how was going the ceremony, are japanese happy etc., we face the awful words of the japanese crowd about Euphy. Finally the moment when her heart stopped working the music stops playing, whole people are chanting "Zero" and it's summarised by person, who hasn't been shown for many minutes and is the closest to Euphemia, Cornelia that said "Oh, God...". That's what every viewer felt seeing that sceene for the first time. This is oustanding and amazing thing in this anime. And the final scene of this episode, one of the best in the entire show. The dialogue with Suzaku and Lelouch moving forward after what has happened - that inspired Isayama on creating Eren. Just appreciate this how this scene has fruited after many years in our modern time. Not to mention that tomorrow is official release of the final of Attack on Titan. Just great coincidence! What's most important is to remember from this episode how the scene when Euphy died looked, especially the crowds chants "Zero" and what she said to Suzaku before she died about keep attending to schol as this is her final wish. That's making unbelieveable twist after the epic final scene of this entire show at the end of season 2 and it's hard to notice that in first watching. Of course worth mentioning is the fact that Euphy resisted Geass! She's the first person who did that becuase she didn't want to kill Suzaku before she died. The love she had in her for Suzaku has defeated Lelouch's order. Maybe it's not shown directly but remember that this anime is about Love. Thank you for your reaction!

It's crazy how dense this episode is. Euphy's death is one of the three scenes in this series that can bring tears to my eyes. It's a perfect tragedy. She was so kind, her desires so simple and noble and it all came crashing down because of ill chosen words by Lelouch. Not only did he destroy her reputation, he is directly responsible for the deaths of countless people. The fact that he was giving in to work with her only compounds that. No one wanted this. Not Euphy. Not Suzaku. Not Lelouch. Not even C2. Also, shout out to Yuri Lowenthal and Michelle Ruff for carrying that scene. Johnny Yong Basch often (rightfully) gets praised for his role as Lelouch, but let's respect these actors as well. So, Kaguya is actually very intelligent. She's probably the fourth smartest person in the Black Knights (following Lelouch, Rakshata, and Dietard) at this moment. And a natural born leader to boot. Her family were basically all being groomed for leadership in Japan. Nina. Get ready for her villain arc. It's not really a spoiler as they've already mentioned her name and I believe it is supposed to be a reveal for those who are paying close attention to the series, but Mariane is the name of Lelouch's mother. So, is C2 talking to his dead mother or someone else?
@Megalomaniac_Trans_Lesbian
@Megalomaniac_Trans_Lesbian 11 месяцев назад
The most tragic thing to me is the fact that what happened was actually for the best. Had Lelouch actually joined Euphy, either he would have eventually been arrested and unmasked, or he would have stayed in the SAZ and not bothered with the emperor, leaving him completely free to complete the Ragnarok Connection. The world was saved from a quiet end by this tragedy, because it put Lelouch and Suzaku on the path that would lead them to the Sword of Akasha

So what happened at the end is that Tokyo settlement is build in levels like a building and then there are more buildings on top of that, Lelouch had already put in place a plan to destroy foundations of that and cause buildings and roads to blow up.

What happened to Euphemia is still one of the most tragic and traumatic scenes for me (a core memory of my childhood). Here's the kindest and most innocent character in the show I adored, who genuinely wanted to bring change (with a solution that excludes the need for bloodshed), and then she gets killed off as a mass murderer. The injustice of how she died (her name and innocence utterly ruined without her even knowing). It's been a very long time, but I still can't get over it when I rewatch these latter episodes of R1. The singular comfort perhaps, is that she died thinking that her plan was a success (freedom and equality achieved for the Japanese) and saying that she was so happy in her final words.

FYI the ost played during the whole euphemia death scene is called "Innocent Days" which highlights euphy's innocence and holds a special significance as it wasn't repeated again (except for one more time i believe during the end of series) implying the end of the innocent days in the britanninan empire with euphy. Also lelouch saying euphy was his first love many may interpret as alabama but let's not forget that feeling was actually connected to his childhood days where they were really close and they were ignorant of boundaries of family. Tho the misunderstanding may have been intentional by the creators as strangely the japanese audience is a sucker for that. But This was just lelouch reminiscing that he may have had those kind of feelings for her long ago so technically it was his first love.

Honestly, I can totally understand Lelouch about why he became sooo different after accidentally geassed the girl who he loved. I personally have suffered chronic pain for about ten years and getting better recently. According to my friends, I became a totally different person during this ten years. I can feel it too cause I was so fragile inside my heart that I can’t help but became way resistant towards outside world since I do not want have any undulation happen in my world any more. It’s just share of my personal feeling and my point is just in individual perspective Lelouch’s reaction and change in personality is understandable.

Thanks for answering my question! I liked Montana's perspective on the evil laugh, I think she's right that they're 2 very different psychotic breaks. Light's is the culmination of a successful plan, Lelouch's is after his plan has gone so horribly wrong that he has lost himself. Personally, this one is my favorite cause it gives me the giggles... which probably says a lot about me. But this is also one of my favorite anime. Looking forward to the season finale!

The way I see it, Euphie could avoid killing Suzaku because being Japanese isn't really a major part of his identity to her. He's just Suzaku, and there are many, many more important parts to him that come before his race, so she's able to push that to the side and just see Suzaku there. But the people that came to the special zone? They're all there *because* they are Japanese. She doesn't know them, and their race is their most distinguishing feature to her since that's why they're here.
