hippa2dahoppa2 That’s so true. Lemmy wasn’t just against smack he was also against needles. A lot of people mainline their speed. Lemmy never did that. What put him off smack was seeing a friend die after going to the toilets to hit up what he thought was smack. Turned out it was some poisonous garbage. The guy stumbled out of the toilet and basically had a giant brain aneurism and a massive heart attack at the same time and died right in front of Lemmy. He wrote a song called “dead men tell no tails” about heroin. He was also a close friend of Sid Vicious and was hired to try to teach him how to play bass. The way Sid went out just confirmed in Lemmy’s mind that heroin was deadly garbage. I grew up on a sink estate in the North of England and many of the kids I went to school with got caught up in the first massive wave of heroin to hit the UK. I used to see them in the shooting galleries when there were no needle banks and up to thirty junkies would use the same works. They’d sharpen the needle on a matchbox edge, as it got blunt so quickly. Many of those friends are dead now. Some from hepatitis C some from AIDS and others from overdoses. There are two that I still know from those days. One got clean in the nineties and now has a fairly normal life. The other is still using believe it or not. God knows how but he avoided any blood borne viruses in the early days and never died from an overdose. I work for a drug outreach programme and I hand out clean needles and syringes, anything from one mils which include a needle to two mils with very light gauge needles up to very heavy gauge needles (the heavy gauge needles are taken by steroid users mostly and those that are near death that have had a port fitted). Right up to 5 mil syringes. I also hand out noloxone kits which reverse a heroin overdose. I teach classes in how to administer noloxone and give chest compressions. We have definitely saved some lives with noloxone. That one guy who is my age and still using gear, I grew up with him all the way from primary school and we started taking drugs together, hash first then acid and speed, but he graduated to heroin. I wasn’t prepared to walk that path with him. If I see him around the old neighbourhood where I hand out the needles and swabs, water, citric acid and cooking utensils and he is suffering I will give him twenty quid and tell him to go get sorted. I’d get fired if my bosses knew. But he’s a lifelong friend, and just because he is addicted to heroin doesn’t mean he should have to suffer. I’ve tried to persuade him to get on a methadone programme but he just answers that methadone is worse than heroin. He says if and when he chooses to get clean from heroin he would only suffer for three weeks maximum, if he was to go cold turkey from methadone it would take him three months before he felt well again and could sleep normally.......inevitably that would make him use heroin again. He tries to kid us all that one day he’s going to have his final fix and stop forever. I can only see that happening one way...........him taking a huge overdose, not being found and dying with a needle in his arm. Sadly I’ve found about a dozen people dead like that. Almost always they are on their knees with their torso and head fallen forward and a needle still in their arm. I know all the areas in the housing scheme I serve where heroin users shoot up. Most days after work I walk around these ‘traps’ looking for anyone overdosed but still saveable. I think I’ve saved maybe six people with noloxone. In my experience five out of six were very emotional, some tearful, when brought around. One cursed me out for robbing him of a twenty quid score of smack. I just replied, “no, I saved your life, you were dying”. He argued “No I wasn’t”. I told him “buddy, you were in cyanosis when I found you” (which means he was so starved of oxygen that his lips and face had become blue, at that point the person is maybe a minute from death. He got put in the ambulance still cursing me. Some might think the job I do is terrible. I don’t, I find it to be an honour to be lessening the evil effects of drug abuse in the neighbourhood I grew up in.......Be it blood borne virus’s to saving overdose victims and teaching addicts to look after each other by giving them noloxone kits and training them in their use and in CPR. The number of drug deaths has reduced massively in that community in the last ten years down to the concerted efforts of a specialist NHS Drug and Alcohol outreach programme, and the advancement of hepatitis C and B treatment and HIV management. Thankfully we rarely see HIV in the community I serve. I know that there are two cases but I don’t know who they are because they are only recorded as a number and letter code. Sadly Hepatitis C is still very common. Treating Hep C costs well over £10000 just for one case. They are mostly put on a combination of medication. One of the medications each pill costs about £100, the other pill costs over a thousand pounds per pill and they must take the pills every day for three months. So teaching needle using drug addicts to always use clean works, every single time is something we are obviously not able to get them to understand properly. Not only is each case of Hep C treatment expensive but living with Hep c is a nightmare. The specialist liver unit will only treat addicts who are no longer using and haven’t used for at least 18 months. Treatment is prioritised. One addict I knew was incredibly sick with the illness, but he hadn’t used in over five years and he didn’t drink alcohol at all. He had never been tested for Hep C. So when he started to feel seriously ill, he may have had it for twenty years. He was seen immediately by the Hep C clinic. He told them that he felt so horrible ill 24 hrs a day, there was no relief ever even for a minute and that it was so awful he was seriously considering suicide because he couldn’t handle how ill he felt. He did have advanced Hep C and he was in the terminal phase of the disease. He was prioritised because he’d been clean and working for five years and had a young family to support and because he was going to die without medical intervention. So he got the meds. I didn’t hold much hope for the guy because he was so ill. But within 3 months he was cured of his Hepatitis and was looking so much better. Junkies still die of Hep C in the UK because they won’t stop using and the liver specialists will never allow someone who is still using to even go on the waiting list. So for those who keep using, sadly drinking goes hand in hand with heroin use in many cases because you can increase the depression of the central nervous system when you use alcohol on top of heroin. There are many heroin addicts that spend their days drinking super strength lager and dealing, or heading up shop lifting crews where they have a gang of shoplifters that will go out and get all sorts of stuff that holds value and can quickly and easily be resold. They bring all of the items to him and he resells the stuff and gives each member of the crew which usually consists of three people ten pounds which will buy a bag of heroin. Heroin has fallen in price to such a degree that the heroin on the street is purer (not been cut so many times) and cheaper. An addict can now kill themselves with ten quid. I have gone on a fair bit, but that’s because I’m chewing Khat and have taken a few Ritalin tablets. I get Ritalin and dex amphetamine for Adult ADHD. Those two prescription drugs really helped me to stop taking speed. I sometimes will also throw in a medication called Duramine, which is an amphetamine, but a really weak one. I think I am right in saying that it is levo amphetamine. When I mix that with my dexies my Ritalin and Khat, I get quite revved up. Nothing like the old days, but I do get a nice little lift. Sometimes I chew Beetle Nut too. Man, that shit really makes you rock n roll

@@jackduncan4228 , you're doing a great job🙏💛☀️. I wish there was other options than Methadone. In Europe, some countries has started to go away from Methadone (it is truly a terrible substitute and poisonous). They use now a long lasting Morphine called "Sevre-Long" and/or "Substitol". Sadly it is very expensive in many other countries in Europe such as Norway where I'm from. But "we" are fighting to get it here and to get it cheaper. It's much cleaner and less poisonous for our body and heart. Instead of using 3 to 10 years quitting Methadone, slowly going down, or keep on using it, only feeling bad, just taking it so you don't get very sick, those two medicine mentioned will give you a much better life and options. First of all you will feel better, it will give you a smaller taste of "high" and comfort. In that way you will not need Benzodiazepines and sleeping pills as many on Methadone does. It will take away nerves, anxiety and depression....to a degree at least, that will make life easier, you have more chance to get socialized and relaxed, not feeling tired all the time. But the most important is(with that it is much less poisonous), it is easier to quit with, MUCH easier, and faster. People say 3 weeks on this and 3 months on that. It's much longer on both, it's a lot of work. It's not just to get rid of the drugs, but also what to do after. Anyway, I would say instead of 3 to 10 years of work to quit on Methadone, you could make it under 1 year on Sevre-Long or Substitol. But ad mentioned, it is what we do after what really matters. We truly need good psychological support and treatment, group therapy, anxiety groups, meditation and MINDFULNESS(Mindfulness is one of the best tool we have, and that is for all of us, drug addicts or not). We need a place to meet each others. And that place can be led by someone who can arrange different activities, like trips to the mountains, wood & forest, walk in the city, busstoures to other places, maybe sleepovers, work of different kinds(fixing things, helping people, and so on. Maybe get into the system where you even get paid for working 2-4 hours a day through this meeting place. You see the point I try to make, that's what is important. This is just ideas, but to have something to go to, something to do, a way to let go and to talk, to clean both your inside and outside, to have support and friends, someone who listens and understands, being both with straight people and people who goes through the same. That is a MUST. And we can make it. But we need help from the society, a place to be, opportunity to create work, trips, cafes, doing stuff(playing music, read, discussion, food at least 1 time a day(either breakfast or dinner). If we can do this, and give hope....give people a choice of medicine (as all other "normal" people have), it would be a game changer. We have to try other medications when Methadone doesnt work, when people choose Heroin instead. Think, it's just that, freedom to choose and someone who's there when you need them. A place to meet, something to do, earning some cash just for some hours work, feel trusted. To get this done is NOT IMPOSSIBLE, BUT NEEDED. I hope this is and could be an inspiration for us all. I'm sure there's a lot I haven't thought about, problems to solve and more. And maybe there's a better way. But we have to do something, we have to stand up for each other, work and share experiences. And maybe someday all will change to the better.🌈🌠🔥💎☀️❤✌🤝🌍🌎🌏

Thomas Aasen what inspiring words. Your way is the way of the future. I’ve heard of the two drugs you mentioned. One of them we call Subutex over here. The other I know is in use in Australia as my father is a doctor over there. People need to realise that heroin addiction is a disease that needs treatment of all kinds, from occupational health to damage control. Norway is so far ahead of the U.K. I admire your country so much, I wish I could come and live there. You, sir know your stuff and speak so much sense. Sadly the agency I work with rely on methadone and occasionally give Subutex to addicts that have been using for less time or smaller doses. Thank you so much for your intelligent reply. I wish more people were as enlightened as you. You truly have something to offer. If we could unroll treatment like the treatment you describe addicts would finally be treated like the human beings they are. I love your comment, it means so much to me. So thoughtful and intelligent. I’m going to show it to some of my workmates. Thank you from the bottom of my heart 💚

adam manning But if you smoke or do speed frequently then it can go from relatively cheap to VERY expensive. The National Cancer Institute puts the average price for a pack of cigs at $6.28, and with Lemmy smoking two entire packs a day like he was for a while, that’s right around $375 a MONTH just on cigarettes alone. That’s absolutely insane when you look at those numbers because that’s an entire month’s rent for some people that they chose to spend on something that’s ultimately going to kill them in the end if they keep doing it, which is sadly how Lemmy himself died.

I had no idea what I was doing. I walked into a neighbours house and took a shower. Very nearly got arrested for it. It’s a delerient. My point was that mankind has always sought new realms of perception. The aboriginal people of Western Australia have been using datura for thousands of years. Also Salvia in my experience is absolutely horrible, didn’t stop South American native smoking it for that different realm of experience.

Being a committed speedfreak for over 25 years has taught me a lot about endurance, about digging deep to find strength to carry on. It’s taught me about loss (I’ve lost a lot due to my commitment to speed). As Lemmy put it “Born to lose, live to win”. That sums up my experience of being a long term speed user.

He's spot on. I'm middle-aged, and have taken a vast kaleidoscope of all sorts of fun stuff over the years. I stayed the hell away from heroin though. Loads of my friends made the mistake, and all of them are gone. Sure, I screwed my health on everything else, even my immune system is buggered, but it takes time to make a mess of yourself on other drugs. With smack you only have to get it wrong once. Oh, some survive it, but if you're living really fast and loose, that's the drug family you want to steer clear of, because it can go seriously wrong. Your Uncle Lemmy is right, kids.

In my experience I've seen more people dying of cocaine overdose by IV than heroin and with long term use I think alcool is more destructive. You can be a pretty healthy heroin user if you don't overdose and don't use too much of it. I'm 43 now, I've taken all kinds of drugs since I'm 15/16, addicted to heroin since I'm 20 but I'm healthy today and still use sometimes, I'm on methadone which allow me to work and have a normal life. I don't pretend heroin is not dangerous but it is not more than any other drugs, today in my country(France) the people dying of heroin overdose is very low, there is more people dying because of alcool.

@@neilthomassen1499 Straight cocaine by IV is a killer no need to take speedball to overdose. As I said in my previous comment I know more people who died of cocaine overdose ,nothing else mixed with it ,than any other drug. Taking speedball can be very dangerous as well, that's true ,as you take them as fast as coke alone. Alcohol is the most destructive drug, you can die from delirium tremens because you had too much alcohol or because you have withdrawal symptom, it's the only substance who can kill you both ways.

+FallaciousScotsman Many drugs have valid medicinal purposes, and even the ones that don't have the possibility to be synthesized into something that does. Unfortunately governments are too quick to ban these things outright which makes valid, peer-reviewed research on these drugs pretty hard to perform. Imagine, for instance, that the hunch that marijuana can slow or stop cancer growth was actually true (not saying it isn't, but there isn't enough research), and we could have a synthesized incredibly cheap pill as an alternative to chemo for certain forms of cancer. That's pretty idealized but the potential is there.

+mick george Please. People all over the world including the 'developing' world have used drugs for generations recreationally simply to get high, from opiates which though originally had ''medicinal'' purpose eventually went on to be a choice of drug for millions of people who would venture off to opium dens created specifically for opium use. They would get high off their asses. Same for the subcontinent where ganja/hashish has always been the choice of drug to ''escape the stress of daily lives'' also including Afghanistan where many people have always used it recreationally. This whole getting high for recreation is far from a western concept and though the East did use drugs for spiritual purposes, a lot of the Eastern world also was responsible for using drugs for recreational use. So that whole west bashing specifically is bull crap. You are using one example of kama sutra to talk about how sex was seen as something far more spiritual than west. Bullshit. thousands and thousands of emperors would have concubine who were just used for ''screwing'' and for centuries in the East women were traded here and there simply for fucking. That's it. Fucking.

That's quite something to be proud of - not doing dope. I don't really hate dope - for some people it's right if the circumstance is necessary and it's not abused - once the abuse starts and you get tolerance, that's a really dark place to be in. I can see how he loved Amphetamine so much, I use the drug time to time again, i think part of the reason Lemmy liked speed so much was the fact that he would sometimes have very very hectic touring, which would be extremely exhausting. He mentioned doing something like 53 shows in 56 or so days. Now that's hard to do naturally, at least he found, so Speed was a drug to keep him awake and sharp.
