hippa2dahoppa2 That’s so true. Lemmy wasn’t just against smack he was also against needles. A lot of people mainline their speed. Lemmy never did that. What put him off smack was seeing a friend die after going to the toilets to hit up what he thought was smack. Turned out it was some poisonous garbage. The guy stumbled out of the toilet and basically had a giant brain aneurism and a massive heart attack at the same time and died right in front of Lemmy. He wrote a song called “dead men tell no tails” about heroin. He was also a close friend of Sid Vicious and was hired to try to teach him how to play bass. The way Sid went out just confirmed in Lemmy’s mind that heroin was deadly garbage. I grew up on a sink estate in the North of England and many of the kids I went to school with got caught up in the first massive wave of heroin to hit the UK. I used to see them in the shooting galleries when there were no needle banks and up to thirty junkies would use the same works. They’d sharpen the needle on a matchbox edge, as it got blunt so quickly. Many of those friends are dead now. Some from hepatitis C some from AIDS and others from overdoses. There are two that I still know from those days. One got clean in the nineties and now has a fairly normal life. The other is still using believe it or not. God knows how but he avoided any blood borne viruses in the early days and never died from an overdose. I work for a drug outreach programme and I hand out clean needles and syringes, anything from one mils which include a needle to two mils with very light gauge needles up to very heavy gauge needles (the heavy gauge needles are taken by steroid users mostly and those that are near death that have had a port fitted). Right up to 5 mil syringes. I also hand out noloxone kits which reverse a heroin overdose. I teach classes in how to administer noloxone and give chest compressions. We have definitely saved some lives with noloxone. That one guy who is my age and still using gear, I grew up with him all the way from primary school and we started taking drugs together, hash first then acid and speed, but he graduated to heroin. I wasn’t prepared to walk that path with him. If I see him around the old neighbourhood where I hand out the needles and swabs, water, citric acid and cooking utensils and he is suffering I will give him twenty quid and tell him to go get sorted. I’d get fired if my bosses knew. But he’s a lifelong friend, and just because he is addicted to heroin doesn’t mean he should have to suffer. I’ve tried to persuade him to get on a methadone programme but he just answers that methadone is worse than heroin. He says if and when he chooses to get clean from heroin he would only suffer for three weeks maximum, if he was to go cold turkey from methadone it would take him three months before he felt well again and could sleep normally.......inevitably that would make him use heroin again. He tries to kid us all that one day he’s going to have his final fix and stop forever. I can only see that happening one way...........him taking a huge overdose, not being found and dying with a needle in his arm. Sadly I’ve found about a dozen people dead like that. Almost always they are on their knees with their torso and head fallen forward and a needle still in their arm. I know all the areas in the housing scheme I serve where heroin users shoot up. Most days after work I walk around these ‘traps’ looking for anyone overdosed but still saveable. I think I’ve saved maybe six people with noloxone. In my experience five out of six were very emotional, some tearful, when brought around. One cursed me out for robbing him of a twenty quid score of smack. I just replied, “no, I saved your life, you were dying”. He argued “No I wasn’t”. I told him “buddy, you were in cyanosis when I found you” (which means he was so starved of oxygen that his lips and face had become blue, at that point the person is maybe a minute from death. He got put in the ambulance still cursing me. Some might think the job I do is terrible. I don’t, I find it to be an honour to be lessening the evil effects of drug abuse in the neighbourhood I grew up in.......Be it blood borne virus’s to saving overdose victims and teaching addicts to look after each other by giving them noloxone kits and training them in their use and in CPR. The number of drug deaths has reduced massively in that community in the last ten years down to the concerted efforts of a specialist NHS Drug and Alcohol outreach programme, and the advancement of hepatitis C and B treatment and HIV management. Thankfully we rarely see HIV in the community I serve. I know that there are two cases but I don’t know who they are because they are only recorded as a number and letter code. Sadly Hepatitis C is still very common. Treating Hep C costs well over £10000 just for one case. They are mostly put on a combination of medication. One of the medications each pill costs about £100, the other pill costs over a thousand pounds per pill and they must take the pills every day for three months. So teaching needle using drug addicts to always use clean works, every single time is something we are obviously not able to get them to understand properly. Not only is each case of Hep C treatment expensive but living with Hep c is a nightmare. The specialist liver unit will only treat addicts who are no longer using and haven’t used for at least 18 months. Treatment is prioritised. One addict I knew was incredibly sick with the illness, but he hadn’t used in over five years and he didn’t drink alcohol at all. He had never been tested for Hep C. So when he started to feel seriously ill, he may have had it for twenty years. He was seen immediately by the Hep C clinic. He told them that he felt so horrible ill 24 hrs a day, there was no relief ever even for a minute and that it was so awful he was seriously considering suicide because he couldn’t handle how ill he felt. He did have advanced Hep C and he was in the terminal phase of the disease. He was prioritised because he’d been clean and working for five years and had a young family to support and because he was going to die without medical intervention. So he got the meds. I didn’t hold much hope for the guy because he was so ill. But within 3 months he was cured of his Hepatitis and was looking so much better. Junkies still die of Hep C in the UK because they won’t stop using and the liver specialists will never allow someone who is still using to even go on the waiting list. So for those who keep using, sadly drinking goes hand in hand with heroin use in many cases because you can increase the depression of the central nervous system when you use alcohol on top of heroin. There are many heroin addicts that spend their days drinking super strength lager and dealing, or heading up shop lifting crews where they have a gang of shoplifters that will go out and get all sorts of stuff that holds value and can quickly and easily be resold. They bring all of the items to him and he resells the stuff and gives each member of the crew which usually consists of three people ten pounds which will buy a bag of heroin. Heroin has fallen in price to such a degree that the heroin on the street is purer (not been cut so many times) and cheaper. An addict can now kill themselves with ten quid. I have gone on a fair bit, but that’s because I’m chewing Khat and have taken a few Ritalin tablets. I get Ritalin and dex amphetamine for Adult ADHD. Those two prescription drugs really helped me to stop taking speed. I sometimes will also throw in a medication called Duramine, which is an amphetamine, but a really weak one. I think I am right in saying that it is levo amphetamine. When I mix that with my dexies my Ritalin and Khat, I get quite revved up. Nothing like the old days, but I do get a nice little lift. Sometimes I chew Beetle Nut too. Man, that shit really makes you rock n roll
@@jackduncan4228 , you're doing a great job🙏💛☀️. I wish there was other options than Methadone. In Europe, some countries has started to go away from Methadone (it is truly a terrible substitute and poisonous). They use now a long lasting Morphine called "Sevre-Long" and/or "Substitol". Sadly it is very expensive in many other countries in Europe such as Norway where I'm from. But "we" are fighting to get it here and to get it cheaper. It's much cleaner and less poisonous for our body and heart. Instead of using 3 to 10 years quitting Methadone, slowly going down, or keep on using it, only feeling bad, just taking it so you don't get very sick, those two medicine mentioned will give you a much better life and options. First of all you will feel better, it will give you a smaller taste of "high" and comfort. In that way you will not need Benzodiazepines and sleeping pills as many on Methadone does. It will take away nerves, anxiety and depression....to a degree at least, that will make life easier, you have more chance to get socialized and relaxed, not feeling tired all the time. But the most important is(with that it is much less poisonous), it is easier to quit with, MUCH easier, and faster. People say 3 weeks on this and 3 months on that. It's much longer on both, it's a lot of work. It's not just to get rid of the drugs, but also what to do after. Anyway, I would say instead of 3 to 10 years of work to quit on Methadone, you could make it under 1 year on Sevre-Long or Substitol. But ad mentioned, it is what we do after what really matters. We truly need good psychological support and treatment, group therapy, anxiety groups, meditation and MINDFULNESS(Mindfulness is one of the best tool we have, and that is for all of us, drug addicts or not). We need a place to meet each others. And that place can be led by someone who can arrange different activities, like trips to the mountains, wood & forest, walk in the city, busstoures to other places, maybe sleepovers, work of different kinds(fixing things, helping people, and so on. Maybe get into the system where you even get paid for working 2-4 hours a day through this meeting place. You see the point I try to make, that's what is important. This is just ideas, but to have something to go to, something to do, a way to let go and to talk, to clean both your inside and outside, to have support and friends, someone who listens and understands, being both with straight people and people who goes through the same. That is a MUST. And we can make it. But we need help from the society, a place to be, opportunity to create work, trips, cafes, doing stuff(playing music, read, discussion, food at least 1 time a day(either breakfast or dinner). If we can do this, and give hope....give people a choice of medicine (as all other "normal" people have), it would be a game changer. We have to try other medications when Methadone doesnt work, when people choose Heroin instead. Think, it's just that, freedom to choose and someone who's there when you need them. A place to meet, something to do, earning some cash just for some hours work, feel trusted. To get this done is NOT IMPOSSIBLE, BUT NEEDED. I hope this is and could be an inspiration for us all. I'm sure there's a lot I haven't thought about, problems to solve and more. And maybe there's a better way. But we have to do something, we have to stand up for each other, work and share experiences. And maybe someday all will change to the better.🌈🌠🔥💎☀️❤✌🤝🌍🌎🌏
Thomas Aasen what inspiring words. Your way is the way of the future. I’ve heard of the two drugs you mentioned. One of them we call Subutex over here. The other I know is in use in Australia as my father is a doctor over there. People need to realise that heroin addiction is a disease that needs treatment of all kinds, from occupational health to damage control. Norway is so far ahead of the U.K. I admire your country so much, I wish I could come and live there. You, sir know your stuff and speak so much sense. Sadly the agency I work with rely on methadone and occasionally give Subutex to addicts that have been using for less time or smaller doses. Thank you so much for your intelligent reply. I wish more people were as enlightened as you. You truly have something to offer. If we could unroll treatment like the treatment you describe addicts would finally be treated like the human beings they are. I love your comment, it means so much to me. So thoughtful and intelligent. I’m going to show it to some of my workmates. Thank you from the bottom of my heart 💚
Killbot754 You are talking about the man made Heroin substitute fentynal , which the underground Chemist had cooked to quick, causing a type of MEGA Parkinsons, nothing to do with Heroin, Itbot. And no I am not on Heroin, just stating a fact Sir.
+Biddington Bear Very true. It's not how long you go for, it's how much you do in the time you're given. And Lemmy did it all. Twice. He deserves to rest now.
Heard him interviewed on Sirius xm just before he died. DJ asked him about being diagnosed with cancer, how he feels about his impending DOOM, Lemmy quickly responds "I've been an alcoholic chain smoking drug abusing rock star for FIFTY YEARS! I got no regrets"! Classic...
adam manning But if you smoke or do speed frequently then it can go from relatively cheap to VERY expensive. The National Cancer Institute puts the average price for a pack of cigs at $6.28, and with Lemmy smoking two entire packs a day like he was for a while, that’s right around $375 a MONTH just on cigarettes alone. That’s absolutely insane when you look at those numbers because that’s an entire month’s rent for some people that they chose to spend on something that’s ultimately going to kill them in the end if they keep doing it, which is sadly how Lemmy himself died.
@@MrGibboniciI can't believe it has been 5 years since we lost him 😜 a true gentleman and a real rock and roller, intelligent, funny and a legend that we will never see the like of again ♠️ RIP Lemmy ♠️
That's exactly how I feel,I always watch his interviews as they are honest and raw. No filter and no fucking bullshit whatsoever. The king is dead....long live the King .
Gotta be honest... I'm not the biggest Motorhead fan at all, sure, Killed By Death is superb, but I couldn't name six of their albums, but Lemmy, Lemmy himself, I could listen to this fella all day EVERYDAY... He's a credit to honesty, and integrity, and LIFE itself, let alone rock n' roll...
Yeah. Motörhead isn't only Ace Of Spades or only speed or only anything! But it's nice to have people that likes Lemmy and ain't the biggest Motörhead fan themselves ;)
onepinkrose x Good on you, mate.! I am a fan, but what you said IS Right... No two way's about it.!From now on, there will be a Head-fan, watchin( out for you,
@ bloodfluke "I could listen to [ Lemmy ] all day EVERYDAY... He's a credit to honesty, and integrity, and LIFE itself, let alone rock n' roll... ...AMEN !
He was always so brilliant to listen to in interviews. He was so funny, intelligent and grounded to reality the kind of guy you could probably have interesting conversations with in a pub all night. The world is a duller place without you Lemmy. R.I.P
@@chris.pbacon1811 ??? Lemmy always said live and let live. He spent time at the Rainbow with boys who like boys, trans people and he never cared and some where his friends.
How Lemmy has lived into his 60's with all the speed, cigarettes and booze is a bloody miracle. He's a prince of a guy whose up for a laugh with just about anybody, be it fans or other musicians. He's also fucking strong. I was talking to him one night and had a buddy take a picture of he and me together. Before my friend could snap the pic, Lemmy grabbed me in a chokehold. I felt that for two days afterward and he was just fucking around. He is God, but doesn't act like it. That's cool.
That’s why humans have been taking drugs such as Marijuana, Khat, magic mushrooms, peyote and datura for thousands and thousands of years. People like to feel good, who’d have thunk such a thing. The only difference is now we’ve criminalised it all apart from alcohol, which if it were discovered yesterday would definitely be illegal.
slightly amused black kid from the suburbs yeah I know believe me that datura don’t ‘feel’ good. I did some when I was in Australia and I was out of it for about 18 hours. I had no idea what I was doing. I walked into a neighbours house and took a shower. Very nearly got arrested for it. It’s a delerient. My point was that mankind has always sought new realms of perception. The aboriginal people of Western Australia have been using datura for thousands of years. Also Salvia in my experience is absolutely horrible, didn’t stop South American native smoking it for that different realm of experience.
Just like Ozzy, a character people assumed would be non-coherent and floating out of their minds 24/7. Yet were in fact grounded, intelligent and very anti-heroin people. Rock n roll is the not the cliche the media want us to consume.
What are you talking about bro haha Lemmy was very much like that, very grounded and coherent, and even anti heroin. But ozzy.. as much as I love him, he just seems like he hasnt been all there since atleast the 80's. Besides, he did do heroin, just didn't like it, so I wouldnt call him anti heroin.
I love how Lemmy says music can be influential as long as the buzz goes on. He was very careful with how he talked about taking drugs and didn’t bite whenever the interviewer tried to reel him in. Smart man
Being a committed speedfreak for over 25 years has taught me a lot about endurance, about digging deep to find strength to carry on. It’s taught me about loss (I’ve lost a lot due to my commitment to speed). As Lemmy put it “Born to lose, live to win”. That sums up my experience of being a long term speed user.
As I've got older I just find I like sleep more. It's impossible to raise a family and hold down a regular boring job as a speed freak. Well it was for me anyway. I'm sure I'll have a go again sometime but I don't miss that acrid, chemical sweat stink and near-psychosis all that much.
Same with me and my Mrs Jack, I'm 53 she 41 we have done a great job on our 8 kids, the older ones are doing well working the younger two are still school age, we don't hide the fact we take speed they're fully aware of what we do, but they've never seen us take it.
He's spot on. I'm middle-aged, and have taken a vast kaleidoscope of all sorts of fun stuff over the years. I stayed the hell away from heroin though. Loads of my friends made the mistake, and all of them are gone. Sure, I screwed my health on everything else, even my immune system is buggered, but it takes time to make a mess of yourself on other drugs. With smack you only have to get it wrong once. Oh, some survive it, but if you're living really fast and loose, that's the drug family you want to steer clear of, because it can go seriously wrong. Your Uncle Lemmy is right, kids.
Amphetamines are pretty fucking terrible though, I will be honest. I loved it, and loved playing guitar on it. But you really have to go out of your way to take care of yourself and your health while on it.
In my experience I've seen more people dying of cocaine overdose by IV than heroin and with long term use I think alcool is more destructive. You can be a pretty healthy heroin user if you don't overdose and don't use too much of it. I'm 43 now, I've taken all kinds of drugs since I'm 15/16, addicted to heroin since I'm 20 but I'm healthy today and still use sometimes, I'm on methadone which allow me to work and have a normal life. I don't pretend heroin is not dangerous but it is not more than any other drugs, today in my country(France) the people dying of heroin overdose is very low, there is more people dying because of alcool.
@@damienfavard2971 Yeah a lot of users are taking 'snowballs' Crack+heroin and going over. If theyre drinking aswell the danger is higher. Alcohol is the worst because the sheer fact it's legal, thrown in our faces, hard to escape, im a recovery and had to leave people for trying to encourge me to drink or simply their attitude changes or you realize you don't like each other sober. Speed turns people into idiots, sleep deprication does nobody any good. Never met anyone who can moderate it.
@@neilthomassen1499 Straight cocaine by IV is a killer no need to take speedball to overdose. As I said in my previous comment I know more people who died of cocaine overdose ,nothing else mixed with it ,than any other drug. Taking speedball can be very dangerous as well, that's true ,as you take them as fast as coke alone. Alcohol is the most destructive drug, you can die from delirium tremens because you had too much alcohol or because you have withdrawal symptom, it's the only substance who can kill you both ways.
Wow. Imagine not being a Motorhead fan. What's that like? Can you actually function as a normal human being? Only messing, man. I totally get what you're saying with regards to Lemmy. My missus hates it when I put Motorhead on in the car, but she did let me call our dog Lemmy because she likes him & thinks, as a man, he is/was a cool dude 😎.
He is actually a very intelligent man. I like how he corrected the interviewer when she miss quoted him. Obviously he is paying attention to the questions and he has very honest answers, which I like. " no, I never said that." I said it made me a better person.
I learned something new today. I did not know Motorhead was a slang for a speed user. I always thought motor head was a take on Harley bike engines for some reasons. I had no idea this guy was British. Great interview. 5 stars***** RH DSD
`Have u written any songs directly as a consequence of doing drugs` 'Oh all of em' That 1 got me Great quote Mr. Kilmister Rest Easy wherever u are Legend
This is likely the best drug/anti-drug ad I've ever seen. A truly realistic assessment of why people like drugs and why they'll use them, and reasons why it's not a great idea to get into them. A good man here, RIP.
Lemmy is one of the few sages of our times. Every rocker should read his autobiography, a really great book, not only out of interest for his life, but for his worldview and ideas especially.
He was so wise and full of common sense because he.......? What? Is it because he said don't do heroin? Kids shouldn't do drugs? His only reason for saying that apparently was because it might lead to heroin. I mean realistically if you found that to be wise then I have a feeling you might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer. I sincerely hope you're a kid or very young adult that doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground yet. I've heard wiser things in Burger King commercials.
@@jd9708 Ok step back for a second. You just made an assumption, then argued with and insulted me over it. "Is it because he said don't do heroin? Kids shouldn't do drugs?" What I was actually referring to was the part at 2:18. I have taken drugs before and quit so I agree with this comment. Most world governemts STILL do not realise what Lemmy points out here. Anyway, if you want to have a go at me for your mistake and it makes you feel big, then I hope your happy with your self. Have a nice weekend.
@@jamessmith84240 I'll take a step forward, thanks. The guy is a damn idiot. End of story as far as I'm concerned and people putting idiots high up on pedestals is just getting old. In your world somebody like Lemmy should rule, ok, in mine he is structly for entertainment. Sorry if I offended you or insulted you, sometimes I too am an idiot.
finally, a musician that doesn't say "KIDS, DO DRUGS" - but instead essentially says "drugs CAN be helpful. but don't take them if you don't need to" more artists need to be more responsible with the power of being a role model...
cj stibitz yeah if anything they have interviews like layne Staley not directly saying don’t do drugs but instead stung out saying he wishes he never did them.
Actually i went to a pub in Bologna (Italy) last week , it was pretty much of a rock themed place, and i saw that a fuckin bourbon and coke was called "KILMISTER" .....do i need to say more ? Hail lemmy 🤘🏻🔥
+FallaciousScotsman Many drugs have valid medicinal purposes, and even the ones that don't have the possibility to be synthesized into something that does. Unfortunately governments are too quick to ban these things outright which makes valid, peer-reviewed research on these drugs pretty hard to perform. Imagine, for instance, that the hunch that marijuana can slow or stop cancer growth was actually true (not saying it isn't, but there isn't enough research), and we could have a synthesized incredibly cheap pill as an alternative to chemo for certain forms of cancer. That's pretty idealized but the potential is there.
+mick george Please. People all over the world including the 'developing' world have used drugs for generations recreationally simply to get high, from opiates which though originally had ''medicinal'' purpose eventually went on to be a choice of drug for millions of people who would venture off to opium dens created specifically for opium use. They would get high off their asses. Same for the subcontinent where ganja/hashish has always been the choice of drug to ''escape the stress of daily lives'' also including Afghanistan where many people have always used it recreationally. This whole getting high for recreation is far from a western concept and though the East did use drugs for spiritual purposes, a lot of the Eastern world also was responsible for using drugs for recreational use. So that whole west bashing specifically is bull crap. You are using one example of kama sutra to talk about how sex was seen as something far more spiritual than west. Bullshit. thousands and thousands of emperors would have concubine who were just used for ''screwing'' and for centuries in the East women were traded here and there simply for fucking. That's it. Fucking.
Psychadelics got me in love wuth guitar, every tune and beat and rhythm sprouted in my head is perfecty executed, now when im sober i can excute rythms and tunes just gotta play it an extra time to get it down just as i would imagined it.
"Rock n Roll got easier when I stopped doing it...is not something I do...it's something I am now". - Lemmy. * May our fearless General Rock in Peace. May the battle live on.
I remember lemmy going to a night club in soho london on mondays the gossips and I was amazed that you could actually see people like him in such a place plus I was new in london, french everything made sense to me
As someone who used to be a full blown opiate head, I gotta give Lemmy respect for expressing his hate for heroin and having the balls to say “acid made me a better person”...I’m more of a 🍄 guy, but I always appreciate when someone talks about the benefits with proper psychedelic use!
I don’t know a single song from Mötorhead, never listened to them, but after seeing Dave’s speech and seeing this interview, Lemmy has my upmost respect
My mom and esp my dad played stuff like his all day long. And while other little kids listened to cute nursery rhymes about fluffy bunnys and puppys, these Songs have been my lullabies, and 'smoke on the water' and 'kashmir' are the first 2 Songs i remember as a Kid. Of course i don't think it's terrible, but Lemmy's music wouldn't be my 1st choice. For certain i can see the huge role he played and how important he and/or what he has done is, but i for myself do like other things better. But as long as i remember, i loved this man. Just him, the guy we can see in Interviews like this. Never in my life have i seen/met someone that was a more perfekt combination of 'super nice and friendly guy' × 'Definition of badass'! Rip King, i'm sure you're one of the few people who will never be forgotten, not even in 500yrs. You definitely earned your place in history!
I'm not too big on Motorhead and I've never done drugs, don't drink, and don't drink caffeine. But I gotta say, Lemmy seems like he was a really good dude.
That's quite something to be proud of - not doing dope. I don't really hate dope - for some people it's right if the circumstance is necessary and it's not abused - once the abuse starts and you get tolerance, that's a really dark place to be in. I can see how he loved Amphetamine so much, I use the drug time to time again, i think part of the reason Lemmy liked speed so much was the fact that he would sometimes have very very hectic touring, which would be extremely exhausting. He mentioned doing something like 53 shows in 56 or so days. Now that's hard to do naturally, at least he found, so Speed was a drug to keep him awake and sharp.
If you disrespect drugs they will disrespect you if you respect drugs they respect you its about knowing, and when and where to stop Lemmy is the man god rest his sole. Full respect my brother
***** At least u can acknowledge that. The 1st step is always admitting u have a problem. Maybe the drugs guided u toward the realization of that flaw. Then again, if u really love being an arrogant fuck and don't see it as a personal flaw. The drugs really didn't decrease ur superego at all. That's ok though the world needs arrogant fucks to become frat boys and politicians;)
Eddie Herger Wow, I had no idea Freud spoke of hallucinogens destroying the superego. I was just basing it on personal experience, and experiences of friends. It's interesting because freud was addicted to cocaine and I think cocaine does the opposite and actually inflates the superego. Sometimes to the point of a light messiah complex.
Ian was a very talented and experienced man..not just an eccentric character and brilliant bassist. Highly intelligent... Kind man. I love LOVE Motorhead . Lemmy is a master composer and good soul. Bless you sir
Lemmy always struck me as kind of a contradiction. To see him perform and given that he had a thing for collecting Nazi and Confederate memorabilia, you'd think he'd be a monster, but he was actually one of the most kind and down to earth people you could hope to meet.
