Today's video is going to be a comparison of all my lemon yellow watercolors.
Lemon yellow is not a color I use all that often but I do like having it available on my palette for those rare occasions I do need it.

Gorgeous yellows! I don’t keep cadmiums on my Plein air palette because I throw out my wash water outdoors, so I try to keep to earth friendly colors. I tried the White Night paints because they are so saturated and low price. But I was really disappointed in the mixes with their yellows, although it looks great here. Thanks for the comparisons. I’m going to have to look at the Windsor Lemon. I like that it doesn’t have a green cast. Thanks as always!

I think its just the lighting that every one of those yellows look warmer on screen than in real life. I love my W&N cad lemon. If it was any cooler it would be too green to my eye. So for it too look so orange leaning on screen is interesting. I don't own any Roman Szmal or White nights but I have the others. All my py3's are too pale & I never use them. I find my Holbien Py175 has pretty low tinting strength so I took it off my main palette. I love seeing what you share. Thanks!

Yeah it's really difficult to capture yellows on camera accurately and they change so much under different lighting conditions.

I like the Daniel Smith lemon yellow! Holbein is really nice too. I think Daniel Smith is more affordable. I have to check the prices here in the US.

This is a good comparison video, as all of your videos are. But the lemon/light yellows are often underestimated. I got into the lemon yellow colour from watching videos based on paintings in the style of Ron Ranson. He has a particular loose and atmospheric style that uses hake brushes and a reduced palette. The light colours are Raw Sienna and Lemon Yellow Hue.

Thank you. Yup. Ron Ranson is where I started too. Lemon yellow and raw sienna (or yellow ochre) are still the only yellows I have in my usual limited landscape palette. Even though I keep trying to use an expanded color palette I always wish I could just go back to my usual 8 or 9 paints. I soon got bored of the hake brush after a couple of months though. 🤣

It was interesting to see the W&N Cadmium Lemon (he used Cotmans, but I'm presuming the old shade was similar) next to the others, because he did say in Big Brush Watercolor that he didn't think it really qualified as Lemon... just more like a light yellow.

@@JayNathanWatercolor I'm still getting to grips with the hake brush, especially for more spontaneous painting approaches like Scott Swinson which I find fascinating and liberating to paint that way. He also uses a limited palette, but he really moves the water around and creates incredibly atmospheric abstract paintings that capture the wildness of seascapes and skyscapes

I LOVE this hue, but I always find myself drawn to warmer yellows and using a yellow green instead (which is probably what my lemon yellow would end up looking like! LOL!)

Warmer yellows have never appealed to me. I just use an earth yellow as my warm yellow.

The only lemon yellow I’ll use is Daler Rowney, which is one of the few that’s beautifully transparent. As a fellow Brit, I’m surprised a Daler Rowney wasn’t included, they deserve more recognition considering they’ve been in business since 1783, older than even Windsor and Newton. Forgive my mini rant 😂 I enjoyed your video 🤗

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. ☺️ Daler Rowney aren't in any of the comparisons because they're expensive and unfortunately not available here in Thailand 😭 The Daler Rowney Lemon Yellow is a PY3 isn't it?

Many of my beginner sets came with cadmiums and I was never too fond of them because of their opacity. I went right out and bought WN transparent yellow, then started playing around with other yellows like PY175s and PY97s. Im fine with opaque or semi opaque yellows now, but still still avoid cadmiums. I love the comparisons because you can see first hand the brand differences. Great video and thanks so much.

Thank you so much for this video. Lemon yellow is a staple in my palette, and I use it for almost all my paintings, and I am looking to refill mine with a single pigment and transparent one once it runs out. Your comparison is super helpful, and it's nice to see that Holbein's Imidazolone Lemon is comparable with DS (which is a lot more expensive here in Asia). Will be looking through your videos if there are vermilion hue/scarlet/warm red comparisons!

From what I've read, if you use PY3, you should do a lightfast test on every tube you buy because even in the same brand the lightfastness can vary from batch to batch. So weird. I have both Winsor lemon and DS lemon yellow and I prefer the WN. The Winsor lemon is much cooler in person than it is showing on my screen. I have it as my cool yellow in my split primary palette. I love colors so I have way more palettes than any one person could possibly need. I do enjoy them all though. I don't have any cadmiums (though I love the way they look) because cadmium, however I do like to use cobalts (except cobalt violet) so I am not sure that's any better. 😂

I only use Lemon for highlights in foliage, much like using White Gouache, so the more opaque the better. I use Schmincke Cadmium Lemon PY35, it does the job I need it for and is the only Cadmium in my palette.

Great video! I love Cadmiums, i dont mind the opaque-ness much since they are incredibly lightfast and bright and clean. Qor has beautiful Cadmiums: thier Cadmium yellow Primrose is incredible! Anyway great video and thanks for sharing💙

i never understand why people always claim that opaque paint should be avoided in watercolor, it's watercolor, we can pretty much control the opacity of the paint with water.. we arent doing bodied painting like oil paint where opacity really matters because you cant turn opaque paint into transparent with glazing medium in bodied paint.

Yeah I don't have any problems with opaque paints. They've been used by great artists for a long time. Maybe it's something that people read somewhere and just repeat?

I have the Roman Szmal PY184 and also love it. This Van Gogh isn't the greatest though but then again it is a student grade paint.

I don't have that one but I'm coveting it! It is beautiful in their (Golden's) acrylic paint. QoR also has three PY35 versions and I really like their Cad Yellow Primrose, their coolest version. Super clean and bright, like a hit of sunshine.

Hola: Roman Szmal me parece el más cercano al amarillo limón (1), y muy de cerca el Rembrandt (2) y White Nighs (3). Schmincke (4) y Van Gogh (5). El resto son muy cálidos y fuertes para mezclas con verdes y azules. Saludos y muchas gracias.

I think Holbein looks the best again XD. Interestingly though, I have an old winsor lemon paint that looks even paler and cooler than the cadmium lemons above. I also have the mijello py3 and white nights py35. They are fine but since I do a lot of lineart I prefer transparent yellows. I haven't used cool yellows in a long time but would like to play with them again. Your video inspires us with those juicy lemon hues XD

my fave has always been rembrandt and the only thing i don't quite like about it is that it's a bit too opaque. so i've been finding a less opaque lemon yellow but none have come close to being as vibrant as rembrandt's. i find it interesting that roman szmal's one could possibly challenge rembrandt. i'll keep that in mind after i finish my 20ml tube of rembrandt 555 thanks for the comparison!

Winsor Lemon is too strong for me - makes my paintings too lime green; I am slowly learning to appreciate the very subtle, semi-opaque WN Lemon Yellow (PY53), because of the way it works with my other colours without dominating or making everything look artificial and cold.

I have the Holbein & the Van Gogh. Most of the time I reach for the Van Gogh. Guess I'm saving the Holbein for something important.

I have a very nice PY 175 from Schmincke, much prefer it to the PY 3 shown here, and it's more lightfast I believe!

@@JayNathanWatercolor Almost everything I have from Schmincke is very nice. Except for Transparent Ochre. Maybe mine was part of a bad batch, but that paint is weird!! I find Schmincke amazing on hot press.

I heard good things about PY184 but never tried it. I have Daniel Smith's Lemon Yellow. I'm not sure if it sounds weird or not but mine looks really comparable to any PY3 that I had. It's also the only cool yellow that I have. I still prefer any of the yellows that are right in the middle because they are more versatile for me at least.

I have the Roman Szmal PY184 and it's really nice. I think you're right about a middle yellow being more versatile. I just prefer a lemon yellow.

Hello, PY184 is not bad. It’s very mild lemon yellow color but some watercolor brand like Rembrandt tend to be greyed after dry.

These yellows always reminds me of lemon drops. Also, I hope you're careful in handling the PY35 ones, aside from being opaque, they're toxic when handled improperly. The Benzimidazole ones seem to be a good substitutes for these.

They're only a danger in artist materials if eaten or inhaled so I make sure not to do that. They do look tasty though 🤣

Isn't cadmium lemon yello marked rather transparent? I have the rembrandt one. I like it as well. although 3/4 of my tube paints are from schmincke. Not sure, but I think the cadmium lemon of schmincke is marked as less transparent as the rembrandt one. I once did look it up. I could be wrong. sorry to mention it and then too lasy to look again :-D

You might be right about that but I just consider all cadmiums to be opaque whatever the manufacturer says. Some may be more or less opaque than others.

So many manufacturers mark their paints differently than my opinion of them. Or at least some paints in their line. So I take that stuff with a grain of salt!
