Loved Lena Horne . A great Singer . I met her at her Concerts ..Seen her 3 times was backstage with her.A beautiful woman and so nice.💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💘💙💙💙💙💘💙R.I.P Lena.💜💜🐯💜💜🐯🌈❤️🐯🐯
Why can I stop Crying. I so Miss her!! I use to imitate her style as a kid. I wanted to be so graceful and beautiful like her. She was and still a role model for me. RIP Ms. Horne You will be so missed!!
I had the rare privilege of seeing Lena Horne in concert at the Pauley Pavillion in Westwood, CA when I was a teenager and have never forgotten the experience. She was a beautiful woman with a stunning, light tremolo in her voice that made me shiver. I will never forget the experience.
What makes this song so open to individual interpretation ( in my opinion ) is that each individual who anticipates the journey through life that is written about in this song may have different expectations about the outcome of the journey as well as the journey itself. These expectations could be based on optimism, uncertainty or perhaps a longing for something that the individual has not yet experienced in their life.
at this time lena was separating from lennie hayton. she loved him very much but she was coming into her own as a black person and felt it was necessary to leave lennie, who was white to strengthen her own blackness and that seems reflected in this rendition
She is SOOOOO beautiful. This version is an A+++++++. Can't help but hitting the replay button over and over and over and over and over again. Rest is peace sister Horne!!!
I met her twice in NYC after her one woman show. She is a CLASS ACT all the way. She truly emotes and feels what she sings. Thanks ever so much for posting
Wow, the interpretation of the song is fantastic!! She sang with heart and soul - like the many jazz greats did. Her voice ... well how do you class a legend?!!!!
Unbelievable way of putting the words across with that one of a kind voice. Her facial expressions and gorgeous eyes make me want to only totally focus on her. She was still recording at 80 and did a Gap commercials. Such a genuine real person who we could all relate to. We will miss you Lena!
@TahshaTPitsMe I used to have Lena on 78 records my hair on my arms stands up whenever I hear this song What a woman. Thank you for all your beauty Lena
sublime. couldnt ask for more perfection. thank you for everything. most accomplished lady, most thank you for showing us ourselves by your comment on us. and thank you for every hour of joy
Strange to say but I had never heard this version of this nice song and for me it tops all. The singer's voice is so good the song seems to become true when she sings it.
Back then, they really tried to downplay as much Black beauty and talent as they could, so as to avoid threatening comparisons in some cases....beauty & the voice vs. good looks & good looks
Classy. Hearing it all over. Excellent excellent obituary in the NYTimes. As a gay man I find it esp heartening to have just read her one true love happened to be a gay musician she said she couldn't be intimate with, but gave her so much instruction and hope. Yay!
This was either from "THE ANDY WILLIAMS SHOW" or "THE BELL TELEPHONE HOUR", because their original color videotapes from that period were saved, while most of the other variety shows of the mid-'60s [including "PERRY COMO'S KRAFT MUSIC HALL"] mostly exist on black & white kinescope film.
I honestly can't see anyone other than Alicia Keys playing Lena Horne. She is the perfect choice! The physical resemblance alone between Alicia and Lena is amazing. Thanks for the update!
She was a class act as was Mancini who wrote this song. We've lost so many memorable people who have shaped this world for the better. God bless her. May she remain safe in God's loving care.
She was the epitome of class, elegance and just going out there and singing without cannons, fireworks, tidal waves of water: just sing the damn song, total containment! She's singing to the Angels!👑🦚💜💝💖💞🎀🎼🎤🎵🎹🎼🎶
@NYCguys2007 i agree 100 percent with you Lena planned out every single facial expression and movement she ever did she interpreted song lyrics very well and i think this song right here was meant to be sung like this to me it is a sad song
@NYCguys2007 you're right amplification was available from the 30s on; in the 60s, amplification could be excellent if you had a well chosen equipment and the right engineer, but this may not have happened so often...
@NYCguys2007 I read that excerpt, and I found no criticism from Gavin. He just talks about how Ms. Horne would sing traditionally optimistic songs, like "Moon River", with sadness and pain. It's not a critique; it's a description of the parallels between Ms. Horne's real-life frustrations and her performances during that same time. It must have been tough for Ms. Horne, but thank goodness for her truthfulness, which left us indelible performances like this one.
I'm an Italian from Belgium and I'm 100 % agree with you. What the blacks gave to the american music is gold. All the other shity things of hate, etc.... are not important.
@KatherineNoblesYou don't if you sing very low... this recording wasn't sang loud at all, so she didn't have to open her mouth so wide. She probably lipdubbed it singing loud and with an audience, so she let her voice ring -and this cannot be heard in the present recording.
Much agreed! I remember seeing Alicia a couple years a go at some red carpet event. She had on a 30's style gown, with her hair styled to match that particular period, and I said OMG that's Lena Horne all over again! Do you know if this is a big screen production? (I pray that it is)
@sweetcharlie63 I am very sorry for this. I catched the news from CNN and they use to be updated at the very day so I presumed that she passed today. I should have checked it. Nevertheless. She is gone to eternity now and the meaning of the message remains.
well actually she did that in all her performances where she did not lipsing she just opens her mouth wide like whitney quivers her lips like tina flicks her hair its just a habit lol Lena reminds me so much of my late grandmother
Well that's cool too. I'll take the made for television as well. As long as Lena is honored properly I'm happy! Besides, if Oprah's involved, you know it's going to be a big deal! Oprah does every thing top notch!
