Lena Horne really delivers on a reprise of her classic "Stormy Weather" in a medley with her latter-day anthem "If You Believe" from the musical 'The Wiz'. Superb!
Lena Horne is among the greatest ladies who ever sang the Blues, together with Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Bless them all and may they rest in peace. With love and gratitude.
I had the honor to hear this song sung by Ms. Horne for 2 years working with her on The Lady and Her Music Broadway Show...it was amazing that she did 2 hours and we did about 25 minutes of singing and dancing in this show. There are singers now that could take some lessons from her in articulation and flow with there singing. She was a true DIVA and I will always thank God that I was given the chance to dance and sing along side of this great legend. Thank you Ms. Horne and Auntie..ChinaDoll
I saw this on Broadway and I assure you that she got roars or clapping all through and out the end the ovation was not only standing but lasted at least 3 to 4 mins . She was fantastic!
They did try to label her communist. (Wasnt true of course) She was one of the names of several actors listed on the Hollywood blacklist. Everybody gets a "turn." Even when they don't deserve it. #Sad
I met Ms. Horne in 1985 when she brought "The Lady and Her Music" to the Warner Theatre in Washington, DC. I was an usher there. Our house manager arranged for some of us to meet her. I believe she wore this. Backstage I shook her hand and was dumbstruck: the lady who looked like an amazon on stage was tiny; I towered over her when standing in front of her, but was still scared to death. And 67 at the time, she did not look a day over 40. She signed about a hundred or so playbills and called everyone "baby." I think my heart skipped a beat that evening.
Hey nutrafina, you better respect Lena. She is a treasure. She is blessed to have lived a long life.I wish we could see her even if she too ill to be responsive to the love that we show, her family should know that Lena is still respected, loved and honored by the African Americnan community but I believe that those who love the Arts love Lena because she is living ART. Much love to Ms. Horne
Lena Horne is so amazing!!! I love her so much. I am so happy to have been on this earth while she was here. She makes me believe in myself every time I hear her sing.
6:54-7:02. I got choked up. When i saw this as a child in 1982. I did not know Ms. Horne could hit those notes. Lord have mercy. Amazing talent. Gone but, never forgotten.
We believed in you too, Ms Horne, but that's not why you were so talented. Thank you most of all for being so outspoken and thanks also for your contribution to making our country and planet what it is in a good way! r.i.p.
I agree! I was lucky enough to see a performance of the London run of Lena Horne: The Lady and her Music' at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End in 1984. It was the first time I'd seen a major star and she was truly sensational.
Thank God there are people today in 2024 that remember performers such as Lena Horne, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, just to name a few.❤
Her limelight will always be glowing. Even death aint putting this flame out, shes touched so many and sparked so much in the arts community she is truly immortal. Heres to her brilliant memory and her power to be remembered for years to come. May 9, 2010
I was privilized to see Ms Horne at the Music Center In Los Angeles in the 80's when she performed her one womam show " Lady And Her Music. I was mesmerized by her performance. He vocal stylings were like no other! A Classy Lady! She will be missed!
Folks, That is JAZZ performed by a quintessential and seasoned jazz artist. This is of the stature of Ella and Lady Blue. Its top shelf phrasing, top shelf interpretation and intonation.
RIP Ms. Lena Horne. You walked thru the back door so we could walk thru the front door. A singer, performer, stage, screen, tv and recordings, civil rights activist, human activist. You did it all. You were beautiful and talented. You said when you died you were coming back as Tina Turner. Another bright shining star has just dimmed and went out down here on Earth. We love, honor, thank and will miss you Ms. Lena Horne.
What a class Act......I will never forget.....GOD BLESS HER...what a joy we had while she was on this earth..............I saw her in the 70's in New Orleans......what a show...we all walked out wanting more.....the best!
I had the opportunity to see this legend live in Houston, Texas for her one woman show "Lena Horne, The Lady and Her Music". She was phenomenal to say the least. She kept me captivated the entire show.
I watched a PBS special about her, oh my gosh a class act. When she did this perormance, she said this is the way she always wanted to perform it, with soul. RIP Queen/Diva
The last song, hits me tru my soul, I struggle a lot to bilieve in my self, I feel the chill, like she was talking and singing it to me, God blessed her beautiful soul
@Dudley Maxwell: "Believe in Yourself", written by Charlie Smalls, for the movie version of The Wiz; Miss Horne played Glinda the Good Witch. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DHzx2P4x63c.html
Dudley Maxwell, I relate to your beautiful message more than I can ever describe. This song by THIS angel has carried me beyond this life until the day my spirit meets her’s and I can embrace her in gratitude. God bless this Exquisite Queen and God bless you. ❤️
I saw this show life 4 times.. the only reason the crowd might not be as enthusiastic as we would like, is because the have just experienced over two hours of this kind of emotional POW!! and are exhausted.. It was magic and I am grateful for the experience..
How moving and beautiful... and how much we miss real, talented women with elegance and class. Please return to us, Lena and your successors, as we need you now!
Looked all over everywhere, and have concluded this is the BEST rendition of "Stormy Weather" I have ever heard, which is fitting considering it was given by the woman who ORIGINATED the song way back when. And just to think, this woman used to doubt her vocal abilities... no way....... R.I.P. Lena!!
you know, of all the things i've used to procrastinate writing another literature paper...THIS IS DEFINITELY THE BEST. one of the few performers to reinvent the way she does one of her standards. you get it, ms. horne.
"I was always battling the system to try to get to be with my people. Finally, I wouldn't work for places that kept us out ... it was a damn fight everywhere I was, every place I worked, in New York, in Hollywood, all over the world." She was a pioneer. Talented and courageous.
She sang Stormy Weather twice in the show. In the first act she treated it in the torch song manner we all know -- about what has been lost. In this iteration, the finale, she turns it into a song of defiance and triumph.
Dreams Of Normal Lives, Tales Without Arms, Feet To Rites, Sunny Dazes.Joys And Pains Daily. Great song, lots of water wasted, tears to stormy weather, it is what you believe. Love the trip back in time. Lena Horne - Stormy Weather/If You Believe. Thanks so much for sharing. Happy Veterans Day, 2016.
