Peter enjoys the beauty of Northern Quebec but doesn't get a moose on his hunt. He returns to help his neighbour, Bob Miller, work on his log cabin. Bob has gifted Peter his swivel gun and Peter gifts his pipe tomahawk to Bob. The two compare their Jim Kibler, Woodsrunner flintlock rifles and finish their day touching off the swivel gun.

Decades ago in remote SE Alaska I experienced the most amazing sound which filled every corner of the dense forest. My friend and i were truly perplexed. He looked up and alerted me to the most incredible avian migration I have ever witnessed. At least two thousand sandhill cranes were headed north. The memory was instantly seared into my mind. The sound is still ringing in my thoughts.

Helping out a neighbour in building their cabin is a perfect example of how things were done in the 18th Century. Each person helped each other, and no one really was forced to 'go it alone'. There was always a community nearby. Also, that swivel gun is a nice piece of kit and a perfect addition to Kelly's Station. The only swivel guns I've seen are larger units, like a beautiful example of a wall gun at Fort York in Toronto.

The Ferguson rifle (top breach load) was designed in 1770 and used by a group of British soldiers during the American Revolution in a few battles, Battle of Brandywine 1777 and the Siege of Charleston1780.

@TheWoodlandEscape 8 месяцев назад
Interesting, thanks for sharing. I wonder why the concept didn’t catch on for many decades.
@ColtenHenderson
@ColtenHenderson 8 месяцев назад
The Ferguson rifle was significantly more complicated and more expensive to build, and Ferguson the man died before he had an opportunity to push the governments to adopt the design
@krockpotbroccoli65
@krockpotbroccoli65 8 месяцев назад
@ColtenHenderson The Ferguson rifle was also very fragile and prone to having the stock crack where it went around the screw breech mechanism. This was also a significant reason why it never went anywhere and why it wasn't until the muzzleloading Baker rifle came about that the British military adopted rifles in any significant numbers.

I suppose that the decision to use a swivel gun in defense would boil down to how much powder & stuff that can be used for shot was available. The swivels would "eat up" a lot of both... as opposed to rifle & musket fire... that may not be as loud... but was probably far more effective & deadly. (I suppose that winning through intimidation though... is STILL winning! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!) I am intrigued by using Bee Wax for a finish! WOW!

You never have to many coats of linseed oil on an axe handle. I am working on my new council tools 3.5# Dayton felling axe handle. I have five coats on it, now. I am going to steel will it, today, with thinned down linseed oil and then wipe it down. When it dries, I will put an undiluted coat of linseed oil on it. Then, it takes a month to fully dry.

Your mention of building a sawpit jogged my memory about an excellent period history demonstration I saw at Historic Mill Creek at Mackinac a couple of years back. You just have to get into contact with folks who know where to go. And with the internet that is easy. You have to quit doing this to me. I've got a small cannon in a naval carriage that will become a swivel gun. I've had it for a year+ now and still haven't made anything to turn it into a swivel gun. On a differentI note I plan on a Kibler fusil kit when they come out. My intention is to paint and tack it.

Didn’t know he was planning a French Fusil. You should definitely convert that barrel to a swivel gun.

Retirement lol. I packed it in at 50, so been retired for 20 years. However, homesteading is a job in itself!

I love your channel and enjoy the History lessons very much. But I have to mute the sound because the so called music drives me crazy in the it's the same little diddy over and over again. I would enjoy if more if I could actually hear you guys talking and working instead of just having to rely on the closed caption feature to know what's going on. Perhaps you could turn off the music while you are talking and I can continue muting and unmuting the sound so as to hear the whole show. thanks.

Sorry about that. We rarely have music play over dialogue but, this episode we had some audio problems with our mic system. Thanks for the feedback.
