I was 16 and I idolized McEnroe. This match still breaks my heart. Those magnificent first two sets and then pure torture. Darn you, Lendl! So easy to contemplate the ifs after the fact, but McEnroe completely routed Connors at Wimbledon and nearly the same to Lendl at the U.S. Open. He could've had the Grand Slam in his wheelhouse if it wasn't for.....Lendl! :) Great match. Thank you for the video.
I was 9 at the time. I still occasionally rewatch it because o hated the rude and arrogant McEnroe. His sadness tastes so sweet even today, as he has indicated in interviews that he never got over it. And all that from two sets up, against an opponent who he was very dismissive about (“I have more talent in one finger than Lendl in his entire being”). Ahhh…!
And if I remember correctly he voluntarily lost to some Indian dude during some summer US tournament only to have better rest for the upcoming US Open. At least he said so in an interview few years later. Ciao!
@@Stiffjab71 I mean he was unbeatable here for two sets. He also skipped the Australian Open, which was common among top players because back then it was held during the Christmas season. Chris Evert only attended the AO 6 times in her long career (but reached the final every time, winning twice). It's a really different game now. Federer's best season ratio was 81-4 and that wasn't even his best season.
@@Stiffjab71 Interesting, I remember that loss. It was to Vijay Armitraj (actor in Octopussy) at the ATP in Cincinnati inAugust, I forget which round. I recall thinking WTF??
God ! Here stand the greatest mach of the open era ! Mcenroe at his peak even more agnificent on clay... The day Lendl won even more than his first main title ... he won full deep respect . The end of the richest tennis period, before changes turned tennis in a more powerfull game. Thank you gentlemen :)
I don't think that anyone watching this match would have thought that they had in Ivan Lendl the blueprint for what tennis would become in the ensuing 40 years. The killer forehand, the oversized metal racquet, the emphasis on fitness and the marketing (flashy apparel with ads ), all of it in one single package in a guy with little on-court personality.
Mac the knife at his peak in 1984. He went 84-3 that year, winning US Open and Wimbledon. Just couldn't finish off Lendl in that third set. He kept charging to the bitter end. Great stuff.
Mcenroe’s game was amazing. Looks like his serve motion was very continuous (following years became slower) great volley. Love watching his game from the back, he stood so close to baseline , absorbed opponent’s power with great slice and his change of rythm jumping to the net with such audacity is truly unique. He was in very good shape . Those first two sets are remarkable and hace not seen such a dominant aggressive creative and graceful game in any other player. A Bob Dylan of tennis
He was at his peak here. He went 82-3 that year and yes, his game was so seductive. The grace and beauty of his serve and the impossibly crisp volleys (done all totally against the way it’s taught)...he was a maestro of the highest order.
In a recent awesome (2018?) televised get together with Wilander, Lendl, Becker, and McEnrone, that was said by one of the others and McEnroe quickly agreed.
McEnroe's 1984 win-loss record was 82-3, so there was no where to go but downhill. But yeah.... it was a steeper downhill than it should have been (and that's when I started to lose interest in watching tennis).
@@brianv5677 read Mac's book His mother pushed him and also the money, Totally different than Jimmy Connors His career lasted longer Mac was marijuana user and was called a pot head by Chrissie Hynde ( see BBC documentary) He is edgy off court too. 3:55:25 is the moment I'll always remember. Mcenroe with his head down while Ivan hoists the trophy. The absolute devastation in that moment was unreal.
I like how they switch camera from a winning, awkwardly answering questions Lendl, to McEnroe, who sat on his chair, desapately holding his head after the tough loss.
Yes, and then just after that you see Mac stumble and Lendl nearly barf out the contents of that recently drunk water. It was a grueling match for both of them.
I was for Lendl till the end this is the match of my life I stood at tv no stop After that I played tennis against a wall of parking area for weeks imagining me Lendl than Mcnroe shot after shot
Finale la plus dramatique de l'ère Open avec celle de Wimbledon 2019 ! Une blessure à jamais pour McEnroe qui aurait pu devenir un champion encore plus important s'il avait gagné ce match..
1984, McEnroe was like from another planet. Lost only like 3 matches entire year, and before the final already won 42 straight. Lendl, on the other hand was already in a couple slam finals and even reached No.1, but by this point, he had reputation for being a choker and lost a slam final he should won (US open 1983 against Connors
Daniel Kriz absolutely nothing compared to breaking through Roger, Novak and Rafa.. That we still haven’t had a male GS champ born in the 90’s says it all.
McEnroe was best serve and volley player.Ivan Lendl was the best baseliner. They played many finals.Initially McEnroe was dominating (from 1981-1984).Afterwards (1985-1988) Lendl mastered McEnroe. Both are all time greats.
How the f*ck does this get 28 thumbs up? As Uncle Tony correctly says: Lendl beat McEnroe seven times in a row from 81 to 83. JUST GOOGLE IT! And - ffs - all you thumbsuppers - DO YOUR OWN FACT-CHECKING!
Here is some stats. For this 1984 tournament the top seven seeds filled 7 of the 8 quarter-final positions. And 8 of the top 9 seeds filled the quarter-final positions. The top 4 seeds filled the semi-final positions. The 2 top seeds played the final. And it was the same 4 semi-finalists for both 1984 and 1985.
The only real blip on arguably the best men's tennis season of all time. As great as Djoker was last year, the competition isn't as still for the era as Mac's was in 1984 with Lendl, Connors, Edberg, Wilander, Noah, etc all still playing at a high level near their primes.
the over-development of technology makes everything less democratic, and this is also true for tennis - the difference between the top players and the rest is much bigger now, exactly as it is the difference among the rich and the poor. I'm not being nostalgic, it's just facts: you want as much comfort as possibile, and as high a technology as possibile, then you you get it, and you lose freedom and equality.
If Lendl were given today’s raquet technology, he’d be a monster…Well, He’d be a monster in any given era…. McEnroe is one the all time most gifted players ever…
@@muzzupappa70 oN this I also agree.,.. If you check the pundits comments US OPEN some years ago (Lendl McEnroe Wilander Becker) -Lendl is saying MCEnroe was certainly the better player on net , nobody could hit such natural angles as MCEnroe could ...but 1984 final FO Paris Lendl was the better player on a clay court than McEnroe , MCEnroe couldnt have won against Lendl for any reason that day - there is a reason why Lendl won all the 3 matches they played in Paris FO
The tennis from Mcenroe in the first two sets was the best ive ever seen ( given the era we are looking at ) The way he played on clay was absolute genius. He totally ran out of steam but those first two sets were brilliant.
That was Ivan's strength. He was supremely fit and would just wear his opponents down until their weaknesses used to show and then he would pounce. Ivan was one of the greatest men's tennis players to ever pick up a racket.
@@muzzupappa70 And your point IS exactly? McEnroe and Connors never won the French. Bjorn Borg never won the US or the Australian. But all of them were Number one. And if you knew anything about the slams and rankings, which it is apparent you do not, you would know that ALL FOUR carry the same number of ATP points toward ranking. But thanks for playing, you can pick up your participation trophy and lollipop on the way out.

Life is weird. As an hardcore Lendl's fan back then I was damn happy for his first win in a GS final. Nowadays I regret McEnroe didn't catch Paris that year. Just like Edberg in 1989. Because nobody playing such an offensive Tennis ever got so close. Ciao!

@@thebigmonstaandy6644 He did, and in style. Weird thing is Yannick was not considered as offensive as a player as McEnroe/Edberg possibly because of his (not) winning record on grass. Ciao
yes, because of the premises, yes. Lendl was a big champion but he had been a big loser up until then, Mc Enroe was playing the best tennis and everyone wanted to know if he could win in Paris: no one will be seen playing such fine tennis on slow red clay and this gives value to lendl's victory The contrast of styles did the rest. By a Lendl super fan
mingaulen I agree that both of those things should go, especially the towel thing. Good grief with the towels after every point. How is it I can manage to play tennis in much hotter conditions without a towel.
I was a 13yo kid who had been serious about tennis for a couple yrs and was a huge Lendl fan during this time. Mad Mac was in the middle of his dominance of tennis, so when he sprinted to a 2-0 lead, I was sad and thought about going outside to play…Mac was literally invincible during this era with his revolutionary net game. But I watched a little bit more…then more…and finally some more. It never felt possible that Lendl would win this match despite his comeback - there was the lingering feeling that Mac was simply too good at that time. Even until that last point, it felt like Lendl was always one bad play from doom…but then that last volley by Mac went wide. Nobody in that stadium could believe it…and nobody watching on TV could believe it either. Lendl had broken through with his first major…and beat the invincible Mad Mac after being down 2-0. I was a happy 13yo kid that day…
I remember this match. Lendl clawed his way back into the match from love-40 on his serve in the third set and went on to win the match in five sets. The final volley that McEnroe missed on match point must still haunt him. It was usually a simple put-away for him. Lendl went on to dominate tennis through the 1980s. Everybody expected him to cave that day; he wasn't considered a tough match player, particularly in the clutch.
The most humble and subdued champion celebration I have ever seen. Not only did he win a slam, but it was his first ever after 4 final losses, yet he just ran to give a quick handshake and immediately sat down! No sobbing on the court. No throwing kisses to the crowd. Not even a single roar! And the press attacking him with mikes in his face immediately and not even giving him a second to breathe? Come on! Unfortunately, McEnroe was the exact opposite of Lendl, acting like a spoiled brat, who couldn't even get himself to clap once when Lendl got the trophy, refused to raise his runner-up prize for the cameras, and then took off the second Lendl finished his (once again) brief humble statement at the end.
Well, that depends. This match was a sublime clash of opposite styles. It was delightful. To re-watch Lendl vs Chang in their 1989 RG match they would have to pay instead me because it's pure boredom. Ciao!
This is my tennis, the tennis that I love. The show is far worse today. A pity John wasted the match. He played the most beautiful tennis ever seen on clay. Unbelivable sports event.
The most dramatic final of the Open era with that of Wimbledon 2019! An injury forever for McEnroe who could have become an even more important champion if he had won this match.
Lendl as good as, or better than, Rosewall, as an example. At least as consistent as, and lacking only Rosewall's longevity. And Rosewall never made the final 8 years running in anything. As an indication of where Lendl got with it. But he was not as good as Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic.
Mcenroe lost his head in the 3rd set when he had the match well under control. He threw a tantrum over a line call, the rest is history. I remember the great BBC tennis commentator Dan Maskell stating "Never have I see a player serve and volley on clay court as if it were grass." Or words to that effect. Mcenroe beat himself as usual, that was he flaw, but he was my all time favourite because of his talent.
he gets back to 4-4 in the third and he hits an incredible return to be up 15 love. The world was his oyster at that point and then he does two lazy dum shots in a row.
watch the fifth game of final set, two very nice cross court backhands Lendl 3:14:42 & 3:15:54 & the shut up call 3:15:08 and flying racket 3:15:25 McEnroe
Lendl's movement on grass was oft-criticized but here on clay he was able to get around quite nimbly getting to many a short ball or drop shot. Conversely, McEnroe's ground strokes were less effective on a slower surface. He played lots of short(er) matches during that tournament losing only the one one set before the final. So it appears somehow if not conditioning but instead pacing or perhaps both made it increasingly a struggle as the match moved beyond the 3rd set. In other words, I think that McEnroe being two sets up and relatively easily said to himself I expect to end this in three and when that didn't happen and the games became longer and longer, it go into his head as to his ability to compete for 4 or more hours.
What a wonderful match to watch after all these years! Lendl was my idol when I was growing up playing tennis. He was about hard work and consistency! He lacked the natural talent that McEnroe had.. I just wished Lendl had won the Wimbledon in his career!
Certainly a match of 2 halves with Mac dominating a timid Lendl at the start. Even on Lendl's serve Mac was able to atack the net but as Mac's first serve percentage dropped he was unable to spend as much time on the serve and volley and the momentum swung with Lendl becoming more confident and passing Mac at the net more often.
no other tennis player dominated a year in open era like Mac did in 1984. Mac won Wimbledon...U.S open in 1984 so close to winning French open also.. His singles match record of 82-3 in 1984 remains the best single-season win rate of the Open Era.
