Lenin's Children a new 45-minute BBC Persian/BBCUZBEK.COM/ documentary looking at life in Tajikistan twenty years after independence from the USSR. Once one of the smallest and poorest Soviet republics, Tajikistan has gone from Communism to capitalism, and from atheism to a rediscovery of Islam. Khayrullo Fayz, returns to his home village in the north of the country to find out how life has changed.

As usual with BBC, Soviet Union equals atheism, when atheism was never really implemented or forced. And Orthodox Christianity and Islam still hold strong in the USSR. They were just suppressed in their views and speeches. For example, an Imam or priest cannot speak about religion of their chosing in a state council or to an assembly of people in public areas. But in their churches and mosques they are not being suppressed that much as widely reported in the west.

soviet union does equals atheist extremist terrorists. atheism was never forced? go look what the russian and uzbek communists did in central asia! they closed mosques, madrassas ( islamic schools), women were not allowed to wear full head covers, etc. these filthy communist bastards killed a lot of people and forced atheism. they moved different ethnic populations to divide and conquer. imams are not allowed to say what they want in the mosques. they can only say things which is approved by your corrupted filthy goverment.

Nationalism was never really an issue in the Soviet Union. I’m glad this documentary talked about the positive aspects the soviets had on Tajikistan instead of portraying them as occupiers.

Great BBC production....it represents the difficult path of the many former USSR nations on finding their own way in this most competitive world, after the umbilical cord has been severed. It reminds one of the many nations finding independence after the separation from Great Britain....few really prosper , most go into chaos! Keep up the good work Tajiks! ...observer Jules...

I've seen dozens of documentaries about the former Soviet states, and EVERY SINGLE ONE had something in common- the residents saying how much better their lives were during the communist era.

Bullshit. Aside from murders, confiscation of property, and corruption, it wasn't sustainable. USSR was in debt like no other because of mandates and planning. Shit had to be done a certain way regardless of cost. That's why everyone had a job, even when those jobs were useless and didn't pay for themselves. Communism is a stupid mistake and a pie in the sky fairy tale. It has always failed. It always will.

Katie Frank In Russia life today is much better than in the Soviet era. Much freer and more prosperous. But the 1990s were hell on earth. For Central Asian countries it's still worse than in the Soviet era, they were economically very dependent on the rest of the USSR and didn't want independence. Russia today has one of the biggest immigrant populations in the world, mostly from Central Asia. In Tajikistan almost half of their GDP comes from remittances from Russia (money that migrant workers send home to their families). At some high schools in Kyrgyzstan students can sign up for lessons on how to move to Russia because so many of them want to do that after graduating.

"In Russia life today is much better than in the Soviet era" Is it tho? Obviously the Russian economy has improved significantly since the recession of the 1990s, but I think the Soviet era under Kruschev/Brezhnev was significantly better for the working class. It kinda shows too, considering that there is quite a large sense of Stalin/Soviet nostalgia in Russia right now. And even if this were true, it wouldn't really mean a lot considering that like you said, the majority of former Soviet republics were better in those days, especially in Central Asia.

A lot of comment on Soviet Communism. I think the social policy and the authoritarian way it was implemented was flawed. But it worked well for business, agriculture and industry. The organizational aspects of it brought good results, prosperity. I think that is the part older people miss.

+Andy Cockrum Right and it also shows that the end of the Soviet Union didn't allways have a positive effect on it's former provinces. Tajkistan is very much effected by the current sanctions on Russia which will have terrible consequences for all of central asia. In other words we must lift those sanctions, and implement Minsk 2.

Fantastic that they continue to teach Tajik even though it's in a predominantly Uzbek speaking area of Turkmenistan. Really we Scots should be ashamed of our school systems which have allowed Gaelic to largely no longer be taught. It is taught on some islands still but barely on the mainland at all and will certainly perish.

I love the documentary. Very nice. I personally can't be agree with the law, under 18 year can't enter in the Masjid/Mosque. This is the problem about every Muslim nation of ours. We wants one thing, the leaders do completely opposite. Before the colonial age, during Islamic civilization in school every student learn three language. Arabic because of Islam, Mother language because of the teaching of our Prophet, & last in the list Persian/Tajik/Dari/Farsi what ever you name it. The 3rd one has been taught due to the Islamic culture, Islamic poem, Islamic music, etc. This three combine, we had build the glories days of ours. Today, in the name of nation & states, we're handover our society to the banks. They do what ever in our society to make more money. Morality, ethics, & faith have no value. At all. Like the Saudi foreign minister said "... every religion have some people who wants to use it for their personal benefit." This should not be bring in any conclusion. We have to learn it & fight with the radical extremism. If not the radical always will use it, for their benefit. This is my request to you and all of you, don't accept this kind of nonsense.

Fast forward 11 years, now we are in 2023, the same president is still in charge, not much has changed in the country economically.. No political leader should be allowed to govern a nation more than 8 years.. The history has shown over and over again the faith of the nations whose leader glued to the power and the consequences were devastating .. The Shah of Iran for 37 years, the Tajik president now, Rahmon for 31 years , the Turkish president Erdogan for 21 years and still counting ... At the end , none of these nations have prospered economically and being prosperous now.. As I write this in 2023, the inflation in Turkey has exceeded 100 % ... Sad ....
