Leningrad - i_$uss | Reaction/Analysis [Bible Study] 

Here's an analysis of this clip by a Russian priest. I loosely translated it here to convey the message sent by Leningrad in this video. The name of the clip is i_$uss Russian name for Jesus - Иисус (Iisus) The small “i” is implying on religious-like obsession with everything Apple - iPad, iPhone, iMac etc. The $ sign implies on obsession with everything material. The underscore implies that this is a user name in Instagram, as we learn later when the girl looks at the iPad. Also it is important to know that in Russia it is against the law to make fun of religious symbols, so the authors immediately set stage that they are not insulting the name of Jesus, and even list the name of their attorney in credits on the bloody wall of the truck, implying that the clip was reviewed and approved by him. Also, unusual to Leningrad, there is not a single swear word in this song. The clip start with a logo of Leningrad “/\” which transforms into spread legs of truck driver who is pissing on the sunset. This implies that the group Leningrad pisses on those who’s feeling are offended by this clip. The name of the fictional company on the truck is “Svetprivet” which translates from Russian as “HelloLight” At the bottom the Russian text says “Light for Everyone”. Very similar to Protestant Church slogan. Also, to most religious people Light equals Faith. The truck leaves the frame as we hear the voice of the girl: “So, lets go” as they are about to go to a whole different world of drugs and careless life. At first it seеms that the light is reflecting off their faces is the same light of sunset seen early, but as the camera expands we see that the light is coming from the street lights instead, implying that already everything natural is being replaced by superficial in their lives. This street light metaphor will play an important role later in a clip. It is obvious that the main character is trying the drugs for the first time, asking: “when it will take effect” to which her friend replies: “Soon, Vika, Just Believe!” That phrase is said as if she is trolling her friend on the subject of faith. This creates a context that the girl is from religious family. Her girlfriends know about that fact and are making fun of her for it. The girl’s name is Vika (full Victoria) implying that she is victorious, or a fighter. Her friend calls her “Baby” implying that her life is just starting. When her attention is drawn to the a white bird (the Holy Spirit), she pauses to question her path, as the lyrics begin with “I leisurely dismissed the burning desire to bless myself,” once again implying on her religious upbringing. Girls descend into a night cub (hell) named “Wrong” not only suggesting the wrong move, but also the “W” is a an upside-down “M” from McDonalds. Also you can see that the W was pasted on to the name with a sticker covering first 2 original letters of the word ending with **rong. The original name of the club was suppose to be “Strong”. So “Strong” became “Wrong” meaning the “mistake”, or in religious terms a “sin” has taken place. Also the 2 letters covered are St. which is abbreviated prefix Saint. At the bar, Vika has a drink and the drug kicks in. She start hallucinating and a guy dancing in a club is seen by her as Jesus as depicted on Christian art icons. She is then dressed in white as a bride preparing to meet her Lord, as she comes to her senses on a toilet seat, reminding her of a gruesome reality she has chosen. In her hallucinations we see Apple, a bite of which was the first sin, a young girl in white that turns red indicating the victory of evil over good in her inner self that lives in each one of us. She also turns form God’s bride to a daemon-like creature as a consequence of this. We see a white lamb and a wolf (black dog) as a contrast of good and evil. Her parents are also shown as a model Christian family from a magazine cover, again implying that she is from a good family that raised her right. They are like the voice of shame appear in front of her. The water turns to wine. She starts seeing the Apostles in the crowd surrounded by light around their head. The one drinking appears to have horns. She throws up glitter indicating that she is sick of this glamour and madness. The fortune cookie say “Arise and Go” similar to Christ’s words to a woman being stoned. She takes it as a sign from above and runs out the service entrance. There she sees Jesus again descending from a light (streetlight). The Bible warns of daemons that could appear to be saints and even the antichrists who will appear as God himself, so we can only guess who she is really seeing in front of her. It happens to be a homeless man asking for food. She is then depicted as breaking bread with homeless and has a biblical reference of feeding five thousand with five pieces of bread, however the image reminds of 1480s paining The Birth of Venus by Sandro BotticellI. Then we see the immaculate conception and birth of an iPad. It signifies the new religion of today’s generation. Gadgets and social media. That is the reason we see a cross on a the iPad instead of Apple logo. The iPad has became a religion, inside of which is God in form of Instagram photos of the guy of her dreams with nickname i_$uss. She understood the meaning of life as she sees it. She is walking toward the light - a truck with logo “Light for Everyone”. But the truck doesn’t hit her. The driver dies, and she is responsible for his death. The path she has chosen caused death and distraction and those who grab a sword will parish from a sword. She is killed by the same street light that kills the driver. She was blinded by the light and was unable to react to a falling pole because her senses were slowed by the drug. She was blinded by rejection of her family and life choices that she made. “You were beautiful like Jesus” is about life in glamour - iPad, Instagram, glitter and drugs. Superficial world that is becoming so popular with youth. The result of such choice is not life but death, not only spiritual, but physical.

The music video is about creating false idols and false gods, worshiping brands and celebrities, which ultimately brings you to your doom. The video is full of artificial lights: the slogan on the truck says "SvetPrivet (LightHello) - Light to every House", the girl follows the fake lights (in the club, the light from the acid "Jesus", the light from the truck and the streetlight) without noticing the danger.

I don't know if someone already posted an explanation and whether or not you even care about it so long after the video. But here's my take: this is a video about people searching for spiritual guidance in all the wrong places. The girl took some acid and went to a club, there she met a guy who looked like Jesus and tripped hard. The person who plays him is a model who kinda has a whole style of looking like Jesus. The instagram they show in the video is his actual instagram which is spelt like i_$uss. Obviously putting a dollar sign in the middle of Jesus's name is sacrilege which is pretty much the point. He's just a guy, but she worships him like he's a god because she doesn't have any spiritual guidance in her life. She "gives birth" to an ipad (with a cross instead of an apple lol) - because those are the new idols, the new gods that people worship - people on social media. And in the end the Jesus that she sees guides her towards the light, but since he's not real Jesus, she was following a false prophet this whole time, it's just a lamp post crushing her before she had a chance to figure it all out and grow disillusioned with this false reality that she lived in.

There is actually a ridiculous amount of religious references, would be hard to list them all. E.g. the "wrong" in the beginning: as they enter the party they are going down (to hell) and see the sign that says "wrong" obviously the first two original letters of the word strong (st. = saint) are covered with a w forming a "wrong" (just signaling about the path she has taken). Most of the video is basically about "fall of a man" showing the main character as a young innocent girl and then the same but in a red color. The bride outfit (nuns are sometimes referred to as brides of christ) and then her with a facial expression of a demon. A lamb and a black wolf. You could infer a number of other things (less obvious so those are just an imho)... like the iPad that she gives birth to has a cross on its back and it could be tied into the sequence with her parents and her as a kid. You could infer that traditional (christian in this case, since Russia is mostly orthodox) values of a family and kids have been largely replaced by a culture where a young person would save money for 9 months to "give birth" to an iPad that allows them to look at photos of a guy on instagram. It's a new religion. The last scene is likely a reference to a "all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword" as the driver dies colliding with a light pole, which she is a fault for, the same light pole kills her.
