These are relatively new slugs which came out a few years ago, but are only available in Russia. Gregg uses a Benelli Nova without any rifling to shoot at various target.

Pretty neat stuff, cool that the Kevlar stopped it. The impact on the lead was neat too. Awesome content! Hopefully the loading will be easier next time around. I know how finicky some rounds can be, odd how small differences in powder and wadding can make all the difference. Thanks!

I certainly enjoyed the video :) I think you did fine on the reloading. The results is pretty consistent with my own factory load results. Some seem to tumble. I have been thinking that the slug is too rear heavy. Maybe the slug "skirt" should be drilled out/machined a bit to look more like a air gun pellet? I liked the Complete Idiot's Microsoft Guide LOL

I can't see that comment any longer but i was thinking about it while i was out walking collecting mushrooms today :) There are not much one can do against a bear other than try and ask it to leave, or try to leave yourself and last option, shoot it and i would not like to do that. Anyway, a bear will run you over like a bulldozer..

It's hard to say. At least a couple of them flew normally even though they weren't on target. I'm apt to blame how I loaded them!

You should try to test the brush-clearing capabilities of these flat-nosed slugs. Maybe put some sticks 10 yards in front of a target and see how close to straight it stays (and then test a regular slug).

Dumb question but why not use a rifled shotgun or choke tube? It seems like you keep having stability issues with the slugs.
@john050994
@john050994 8 лет назад
I feel that if you were to hollow out the back end of these slugs the might fly better. it would make them more nose heavy and would give them a cavity for the slipsteam to trap lower pressure air in
@ryanlandry8214

Yeah, I was thinking it's being shot backwards because the center of mass should be near the front.
@ANGELSRAGE77

It is not the slug, it is the way it is being loaded. If you watch Survival Russia he just did a video where he shot a factory load at 50 yards with excellent accuracy.
@nobodyimportant69
@nobodyimportant69 5 лет назад
Load them backwards, no mods necessary. The heavy end is at the front, use a rifled choke tube for a bit of spin stabilization and run 40grains of longshot. Now that would be accurate and put a serious hurting on anything downrange. Would feel bad for Gregs shoulder though, LOL 😂😂

Hi, Jeff! Nice video, as always! But... So many comments and no real Russian guys??? Lets fix this! You just shot this slug backwards! Heavier part goes front. And this slug is designed for smooth bore because in Russia fully rifled barrel is very rare thing. I must add that there is another Russian steel slug - Ivanov Steel Slug. Similar shape, but has no flat nose, but sort of funnel with no hole. This meant to cut through bushes without deflection.

I'm going to go ahead and say they were loaded backwards. The flipping/wobbling looked exactly like the plastic dye filled rounds you made in a previous video. It would just make sense to face the heavy end forward, right? Or am I way off base here?
@guitarplaya68
@guitarplaya68 8 лет назад
I think if you drilled a hollow backside into the slug like the air cup of an air rifle pellet, it would be front-heavy enough to fly straight. It's one reason why pellets fly so well...
@James-vc2xs
@James-vc2xs 8 лет назад
Perhaps I'm just a bit clueless but why is it that a slug type round have to have some kind of shape to it? It would seem to me that a round shot would be the best solution since tumbling would be a non issue. Further, has there ever been any attempt that you know of to make a round that tumbles on purpose? Sorry if this seems naive but the only firearms I've ever really had any experience with is black powder muskets.
@casey197930
@casey197930 8 лет назад
have you tried a reflective backing on the rounds? Might not work but I kept loosing sight of my model rockets years ago, I put aluminum tape on them and it was ridiculous how clear and far they were visible.
@jonathanpoard6436
@jonathanpoard6436 7 лет назад
Do you think this would've worked better with a rifled barrel? Even with the possibility of being reloaded poorly I mean. It seemed the couple shots that were flying somewhat stable had a slight twist to them, maybe you could try to find out. Just a thought, thanks for the video!!!!!
@slowpokebr549
@slowpokebr549 8 лет назад
Ooof, watching the slo mo hit on the vest makes my chest hurt. I can't imagine that you loaded it THAT incorrectly. It seems like it just wants to tumble. I hate to be the guy that says so, but I wonder if a rifled tube would make any difference?
@taofledermaus
@taofledermaus 8 лет назад
You have to understand how, at the time, we thought the slugs were flying correctly. (especially the shot on the book) If I knew they were tumbling, I would have tried the rifled choke.
@slowpokebr549
@slowpokebr549 8 лет назад
I can certainly see that it would seem like they weren't tumbling. They were more or less on target and like you say, on the book it looked like a classic wadcutter. I always hate to say anything because I'm sure you get tired of hearing keyboard warriors giving you crap.Hind sight is always 20/20 and I guess high speed footage is too. Still, I wonder how they will do with some spin on them?
@taofledermaus
@taofledermaus 8 лет назад
We recovered 4 out of 6 slugs, and 2 are undamaged. I'll see if I can find some sort of sabot that might work with these.
@slowpokebr549
@slowpokebr549 8 лет назад
If all else fails, paper patch them with nickel or quarter rolls. That's worked well for me with black powder shotgun loads. Wrap them until you get a tight fit. You can use wool over powder wads or cut cardboard. Forgive me, I tend to think in terms of black powder.
@slowpokebr549

@Riceball01
@Riceball01 8 лет назад
The usual bunch of nonsense that comes out of Sacramento that's meant to strip us of our Second Amendment rights. Two of the most onerous has to do with so called assault weapons and the other with ammo. The assault weapon law is aimed at banning semi-auto rifles with bullet buttons, that's going to be no longer acceptable. We'll either have to register them (yeah right), sell them off, get some sort of fixed mag, or go featureless but regardless, no more bullet buttons without registration. The ammo law is (yet) another attempt at a back door ban by making ammo more expensive and difficult to come by. They want to make us pass background checks before buying ammo, we'd only be able to buy ammo from "certified/licensed" dealers (no more buying from your buddy who reloads), and no more ammo purchases online from out of state. There's more but those are the two that stand out the most to me. If you really wanted to, you could do a little research and find out more, there's plenty of them and the worst part is that there are competing bills with Newsom and DeLeon competing with each other to see who can be the most anti-gun.

If the slugs have a smaller diameter than the barrel's bore, why couldn't it be used with a rifled choke? I would imagine only the plastic sabot engaging with the rifling, giving it a spin it seems to need. It's a question, btw, not a comment. I have no experience with shotguns!

eh, theres always a chance of deviations on any type of obstical. the brush gun concept isnt one that punches through brush, its a gun suitable for the close conditions of hunting in brush. line of sight is still most important ,and its always best to pass on shots that arent perfectly clear unless in a life or death situation.
@Boeing_hitsquad
@Boeing_hitsquad 8 лет назад
that shape is VERY similar to that used in *[electromagnetic] RAIL GUNS* ... if you watch the developmental test videos of the US Navy's rail gun programme then you'll see a large projectile with the same cross-section, just square (face-on)instead (square barrel).
@taofledermaus
@taofledermaus 8 лет назад
Did you notice how much "waggle" those had?
@Boeing_hitsquad
@Boeing_hitsquad 8 лет назад
***** they 'waggle' quite a lot, it's just the physics of the low pressure causing drag behind the front lobe. What happens is 1 side will start to go from a slight variance in bore alignment and as it waggles to that side it 'dumps' the low pressure pocket causing the drag, while the other side becomes larger and creates exaggerated drag on that side, dragging the projectile over to that side, which then dumps it's pocket as the other side develops it's own pocket. .. and so on. For the navy this meant they had to come up with a new barrel propulsion system (their lobes were spaced for crude pattern electro magnets) and a new projectile, which has led to the development of the hyper velocity round... a guided round design that is being reused in navy 5 inch guns and marine howitzers (win-win all 'round!!) BUT regardless, the early designed railgun designs required an identical cross-section, it's inherently unstable as leaving the barrel perfectly straight & having 100% center of mass balance is impossible... not to mention environmental factors like wind & heat generated airflow. TRIVIA: It may also interest you that rail guns have very short barrel life and it's the leading barrier to putting one on the 3rd in class Zumwalt destroyer DDG-1002.
@gristlevonraben

yeah they are just too long seems like to perform the best they can, I bet if they put more weight to the front of the slug, and made it shorter it would work like a dream.

So I've done some research on these slugs. Actually found a video of a Russian guy shooting them at paper for grouping. Then he shot a old engine block. Which if I remember correctly. One was stopped by the block, and the others penatratrated the block. I don't read nor speak Russian. Yet I'm pretty sure in the comments. Someone said it's a 3 inch slug. Oh comments can translate to English. Now I'm really glad I have them. Bear slugs they will be.

That so weird the harden slug punched a hole in the lead plate but the steel just kind got stuck

Would more range aid in stabilization? Maybe it just needs a few extra yards to get straight.
@taofledermaus
@taofledermaus 8 лет назад
The problem is, if it isn't flying correctly out of the barrel, it's never going to fly in the right direction, even if it stabilized.

Ah, cool. While I am pretty solid on gun knowledge, shotguns are a weak point for me, nor am I exactly a ballistics expert. Thanks for the reply

You can always take pictures of the deconstruction and then reverse the process.

Are they longer ranged slugs designed to stabilize after a certain distance?
@taofledermaus
@taofledermaus 8 лет назад
They they aren't stable right out of the barrel, there's no way they will ever fly in the right direction.

I noticed you guys were set up like 25 yards away. Should of brought the target's to within 10-15. Enough gripping TFM is still the best 12 gauge shot gun channel out there. Wanna learn something about your shotgun watch their videos.

I know this video is rather old... but... it definitely looks like that slug needed spin stabilization.
