LENNOX • Fall From Grace To Leak King

LENNOX has gone down hill over the last 25-30 years. The leak I found in the evaporator coil was extreme and was not part of the scope of work I was there to perform but I wanted the job completed.

This fix wasn't a beauty contest, but it works. The number of hours spent on the repair still has to be less than another coil. What's strange are the multiple leaks in a small section. Thanks Rick.

Heres a trick that may or may not work for you next time on leaks thats spread along a tube section. Take a 1/2 inch copper tube and fillet it. Roll it on and squeeze it back on over the leaking 3/8 and braze the ends and the slit shut.
@shifter8207
@shifter8207 Месяц назад
Cool idea I may have to try that. On 3/8 tubing I was able to lightly cut it with a hacksaw blade by hand and remove the bad section and use two 1/2 by 3/8 bushings with a piece of tubing
@HVACRSurvival

Normally I can skim coat it but this was Swiss cheese. I’ve seen people do it, I’ve also heard of using copper wire and wrapping the tube then braze it.

'Back in the day', when copper wasn't paper thin we would re-rout leaking tube to the exterior of the coil. Didn't look pretty but got the system back on-line, with little capacity loss. Those days are loooong gone. IMO, you did a fantastic job getting it done brother!
@HVACRSurvival
@HVACRSurvival Месяц назад
What you’re describing is what I did on a small R290 system but this one here I couldn’t get to the tubes to pull them apart very easily. After Watching the video a few times since then, I could’ve unhooked that capillary tube coming in and then pulled the elbow off the line coming back and then pressurized it to find out which tubes going to the next tube and reattached the capillary tube there but there’s always a chance something would’ve went wrong like I said I was so behind on getting everything else finished…it was just get it done at that point. I appreciate the support.!

I pull those blower assemblies out a lot to rebuild them. A two person job for sure (though I have done it alone). I use a small jig that lets me take the motor off first so it doesn't contribute to the overall weight of the assembly. They are a pain for sure. I remember when Lennox used to make descent RTUs back in the late 90s. I still service a lot of these 'C Box' sized units from that time. Changed plenty of compressors. Leaks on those units are more rare than today. Today it's all this reheat crap and extra coils which make it impossible half the time to track and fix a leak. We can only do what we can do. Keep up the good work sir.

From the late 80’s to the late 90’s Lennox had Rooftops, that cracked the Compressor Discharge line at the same place on every unit for over Ten years, putting two simple 45 bends and a little extra pipe solved the problem, Lennox wouldn’t make the modification. Ditto for a particular York Rooftop unit. BTW, every hot gas reheat design I came across had major problems, related to the reheat.

What really sucks is that coil will have to be replaced eventually, the other tubes are going to fail. There’s going to be trouble for Lennox , they have a lot of pissed off customers.
@brnmcc01
@brnmcc01 Месяц назад
That's a bummer, because I've been finding a lot of Trane Voyager leaks from units like 10 years old. I've had good luck with Lennox package units over the years, not very many leaks, but I feel bad now I took out a 12.5 ton Trane Voyager in 2021 because the coil had bad leaks, and the heat exchanger was getting pretty rusty. You know, the telltale 3 big streaks of rust from all three exhaust ports, plus the unit was just generally in bad shape. I replaced it with a new Lennox 13 ton unit, it was more of I thought Lennox was good, and they had a unit in stock that someone had ordered in 2021 and cancelled the order. There was no Trane or American standard units in stock anywhere, this was like right after the worst of the Covid shutdowns. So far that Lennox unit is running good, the factory belt didn't hardly make it thru the first year, but I've been replacing it with a better brand every year and it's been fine so far. I don't think it has any leaks (yet) we'll see. I think the unit has a microchannel condenser coil, I think the evap looks like this one. The only thing I didn't like was, they didn't cut any of the ziptie tails in the electrical compartment at the factory, it looked horrible so I clipped them all. The other thing I didn't like was they went to garbage black plastic door latch handles, why in the world did they do that? Surely the die cast aluminum handles aren't expensive? And I have one customer with 3 old Lennox units from like the early 2000's that are still running, one has a dead compressor (and that circuit has no gas left in it) so I just disconnected, and reassigned compressor 3 to be first stage instead of #2. So first stage cool call energizes #1, and #3, and 2nd stage turns on #4. The board doesn't know any better if a compressor is running or not. One thing I do like about the new Lennox units is the new Prodigy control, very intuitive and easy to go thru the setup, and look at error logs etc. The Prodigy 2 ones were awful, and pretty hard to navigate to things like reheat or free cooling parameters and not very intuitive to use. The old school ones like most of my customers have with the boards with the little green blinking lights have been pretty good.

Nice job done Rick. I used the valve opener with the two O-rings for a while and always got some bad vacuum. They are just crap, the O-rings get mauled by the threads they have to run over, what a design. What you think about the leaking condenser tubes, is it a stress related problem? Seen bobbling tubes on quite some ULT freezers by two 90 degrees bends 2 feet’s between from the compressor. The second of the 90 bend from the compressor got so much hit that it just degenerated. Small leaks but fatal on so small charges the system had.

@@HVACRSurvival Back in 2021, there was no evap coils in stock for 10-15 ton Trane units, and they didn't even give me a lead time.... like infinite nationwide backorder, so I had to get a 13 ton Lennox unit for this restaurant. It was a little expensive, but the good part was, I found out the original curb on the building as built in the mid 1980's had an OEM Lennox curb, so I was able to pull the old trane unit off the roof, and the stupid curb adapter that made the unit sit so high off the roof, you needed a big step ladder just to change a condenser fan motor. Now the Lennox unit sits like barely a foot off the roof, and it looks neater and much easier to get to. I just hope it doesn't get any leaks, been pretty troublefree so far, except a little shipping damage so one of the plastic door latches doesn't quite close good, so I had to put one of the 5/16" shipping screws back into the bottom of the door just to make sure it stays shut. As far as the smaller units go, the Trane Precedent or 10 tons and under units are ok. 7.5 tons I've been getting a lot of Bryant lately like for replacing old junky Carrier units. Haven't had any leaks from Bryant in a very long time, lost one compressor on one unit, but then ended up replacing it anyway. They're just simple units and no complicated computer BS on the Bryant Legacy line. Yes they're 'only' 13 seer, but just one simple furnace ignition control board, and everything else is just mechanical and contactors. Keep it simple. The newest one has this strange looking black plastic direct drive fan motor, we'll see if it lasts, but I like that it doesn't have any stupid belts on it. That fan is probably not cheap though, but the neat thing is at least it has different speeds for low cool/high cool, fan only etc.

Those Browning torque titan belts are junk. Switch to a normal Browning belt (non X belt) or gates belt and the belts will stop "loosing themselves up." I refuse to buy those Browning X belts anymore. Was never a problem until they came out with the torque titan belts.

Can only do what the customer will pay for and it's a reheat coil. I probably would have bypassed the rows from the beginning being a reheat coil.
