Check Legion Pro 5i Prices: geni.us/legion-pro-5i Check current gaming laptop sales at gaminglaptop.deals Update to 8:40 I don't think this is a problem anymore, we haven't had it on any laptops for months now, some update must have resolved it.
Hey Jarrod, Are you going to review Asus Scar 16 too? I'm confused between scar 16 & 18 for thermals, performance and display. A comparison video would also be amazing. Thanks 😊
Dunno how do you feel about it, but I think that reviewers should opt more for not buying this year laptops (and GPUs), it's the only way consumers can influence manufactures. I got really disappointed with news that 4070ti is selling pretty well :( And 4070 this year is a peace of garbage, almost same performance as 3070ti, but 30% higher price ... I've got 2 years ago my rog G513QM with qhd display (of better quality than those that they put today in new laptops), 5900hx, 3060 for 1350eur. Today for almost 10% more performance I should pay 20% more (4060)... that's ridiculous, that is an real degradation... That made me to buy an PS5 and just cancel my plan to update my laptop, I'll keep mine for R6 Siege, but most probably next laptop will be no more than a typing machine.
I originally bought the Legion 5i Pro this year for $2300 with RTX 4070, I returned it after I saw the price of the 7i Pro with the RTX 4080 from this year being $2400 with discounts included.
I think they tried to cheap out on parts here and there and less features to try and offset the ridiculous price Nvidia is charging for these GPUs. Very sad.
I have a 2021 model as well and see no reason to buy the new one. The 2022 model was the sweat spot. If I could get a deal on a 2022 3080 model, I'd take a strong look.
My friend said that too, there's 0 point to upgrade form 30series to 40series and should wait for new future of Card also with the new FSR 3.0 upcoming release am pretty sure gonna stick with 30s for fews more years
A good 3060 or 3070 laptop will set you up for atleast 3 years. Maybe even more if you are the guy who doesn't care about shanking your settings. BUT I am dubious at game companies these days trying too offload their work in optimisation to GPUs too Brute force. "Oh .. you have 8gb vram? Lemme use all of it for medium textures"
@@tuliotuttut5308 I also have the 2021 but I feel like if we had the option to switch refresh rate with the shortcut key it would be better. I don't want anything else and I would be satisfied. And also the option to customize fan speed (Custom Mode in newer models)
As someone buying this for mainly an office laptop for I.T. work, I see this as one of the best value options possible. Business laptops are terribly priced for their specs. The gaming performance is a bonus and for £1,700 this does the job as well as I'll probably find. I was actually planning on getting the slim 5i, however I'm not sure that allows for a second SSD to be installed.
I bought it for the same reason and love the better video quality and find it so much faster then the thinkpad. I just wish it had a fingerprint reader for security
The only downside on Legion laptops is the keyboard. I often hit 2 keys same time, especially the numpad. Although i would still pick legion over thinkpad.
Why do you think this is a better option than a Thinkpad? Doesn‘t the Thinkpad battery last much longer, is easier to carry around and isn‘t as clunky?
For some reason, the last year's Legion 5 Pro with an RTX 3070 Ti is going for higher than a i7 + 4070 Legion Pro 5i. So I think it makes more sense to get the Pro 5i against the 5 Pro. I do want to know about the quality control and overall experience on the Pro 5i if anyone owns one so thank you in advance.
I have one, but haven't had it for long or used it for anything much besides some photo editing. So far, it is great, and it scored about 12,500 in Performance Test 11. That's close to what my PC's 5950x/3080Ti scored! It's the top model with 32 gb ram, 13900HX and RTX 4070. $1569 at B&H
we really need a video comparing last years and this years laptops to find out if it is a good idea to get a 2023 or 2022 model and which laptop out of them to get. last years g15, legion are the best for the average user imo but thos year it looks like a downgrade for both
Got my brother the last year model 6800H 3070Ti 1440p165hz for only $1300 I am super impressed and happy with it. I think I got him the right one! It's an absolute beast
i think Lenovo didn't upgrade anything on Legion 2023 series, except CPU,GPU,cooling system and refresh rate in Legion pro 7i, even the port is downgraded from thunderbolt to normal type c
For music production people, I observed that 2023 model has less single core performance compared to 2022 model as shown in this video. So, I would recommend to go with i7-12700H legion 5i pro model (2022) for music production.
Thank you for your reply. I am doing post production in Pro Tools with bunch of plugins. Do you think legion 13700hx will be enough (there are some nice deals right now) Or should I go with legion 13900hx? Thanks again for your comment
Hey Jarrod, could you check about the "undervolting" in the Vantage Software? I think it only allows POSITIVE voltage changes. And not NEGATIVE (undervolting) changes! Cheers. (I tried Undervolting the Laptop (13500HX + RTX 4050 Version) with Throttlestop (No Effect) and XTU (Not possible).
@@CLFFRDCHNG nope that won't allow undervolting either. Not in Lenovo vantage, not in XTU and not with throttle stop. (the voltage changes in throttle stop have absolutely no effect to the cpu on my legion 5 pro)
@@Hubwood Hi Hubwood, Those on reddit with 7i pro 13900hx managed to undervolt their cpu, not sure if mistakenly locked with i5 HX series Btw, do you plan on making review with base 5 pro 13500hx and 4050 you are using? Is there any difference between the heatsink size and cooling performance compare to higher spec 5 pro, i9 and rtx 4060-4070? There are no reviews yet with that variant, im sure the community will appreaciate for the full review Thanks again
@@albertputra6220 hey Albert, hm maybe it's possible with the 7i then 🤔 yes I will defenitely review this. I hope I will be done this Sunday or Monday.
Bought 5i Pro 2022 for £1500 with 12700H & 3070Ti. Added 32gb ram and 1tb SSD on top of it for £250 and I'm totally happy - this was one of my best purchases ever, lol
I think slightly better performance and slightly lower price with lenovo pro 5i is better than Asus M16. I was on the same dilemma , Asus is better brand than lenovo I think, but on the other hand lenovo pro 5i has better cpu and lower price than asus M16. I got the lenovo pro 5i , but I have a crash problem. I cant play games. I am gonna return it for repair.
You can fit the m.2 drive. The “bending” is completely normal as it allows you to insert the drive at an angle with ease. Trust me, it wont break anything in the laptop.
It depends on the drive then, I suppose. I tried just now with a double-sided 2 TB Kingston Fury Renegade (the version without a heat-sink). Not a chance! No flex in this SSD, and had there been flex, it would have happened too close to the M.2 slot. Had I tried to "bend" this SSD, I would either have ripped off the M.2 slot from the mobo or cracked the SSD in half. And that's for certain - trust me! It worked just fine in the secondary M.2 slot, though.
BTW, it's not shown very clear in the video just why you can't fit a double-sided SSD in the primary M.2 slot, and Jarrod doesn't explain it. Right next to the primary M.2 slot, on the mobo under the SSD disk, there's a ribbon cable connector which is a few mm thick. This connector stops a double-sided SSD (with thick enough chips on the backside) from being pushed down and seated.
Hi there , thanks for the great content , I just bought a brand new Legion pro 5i Gen 8 , intel Core i7 13700 HX , Nvidia RTX 4060 GPU 8 GB GDDR6 , 16GB DDR-5 4800 MHz and while I was playing warzone on a display setting of 2560x1440 , 7,8 minutes into the game my laptop suddenly got turned off , now when I try too boot the RGB lights on keyboard are showing up but the Legion sign doesn’t come up ( black lcd ) , nothing comes up , tried holding power button for a minute , unplugged power button , let the laptop cool down but nothing works , I mean is this normal for a gaming laptop with this configuration ?
This year's Lenovo Pro 5i is a outright downgrade from last two year's model and apart from getting CPU and GPU refresh, everything is downgraded. For example, the 500 nits 240Hz screen is an optional upgrade this year and the base models are having a 350-nits 165Hz panel, a significant downgrade from the standard 500-nits 165Hz screen in 2021 and 2022 models. Thunderbolt 4 has been removed from this year's model whereas it was there for last two year's Intel models and even last year's AMD version got USB4 via BIOS upgrade. The Screen is still providing 100% sRGB, like last two years with around 70% Adobe RGB and DCI-P3 coverage whereas Asus G, M, ROG Strix/Strix SCAR, Alienware M16, all are offering almost full DCI-P3 coverage, making them very good for Video and photo editing tasks.
Great review as always. This laptop is currently 1.9K usd on the site you provide above. When it come to my country the price will be at least 2.8K. Well, even last year most 3070Ti laptop on my country is still around 2.3K usd currently, and that was a "discount" price.
Kinda weird that for the 2nd year the 5 Pro doesn’t feature at least a fingerprint reader. I think the Legion 7s finally get that option, but formerly only the Slim 7 had it
If anything, GPU prices should be cheaper than a decade ago due to improved manufacturing. The idea that they expect us to pay more for more performance is insane. Not happening
Well R&D, shipping, marketing and a whole lot more comes into play when it comes to tech. But yeah, some one off features like RTX, DLSS or AV1 isn't really much of a worthy reason to buy a new GPU for the AVE people.
Well it's completely opposite. GPU prices would be cheaper if the processing node stays the same as the manufacturing technology improves. However the cost for microchip manufacturers i.e. TSMC, Samsung & Intel for every node level improvement actually increases exponentally. For example, in order to develop 3nm processing node production line, TSMC actually spent more than $40 billion USD. That is A LOT of money spent on comparing to 28nm node, which is $65.5 million more than 10 years ago.
Still rocking my 5 Pro 2021 with 3070m and 5800H, I added a second 2TB SSD to it and upgraded to 32GB RAM as some games are becoming quite hungry (looking at you, Last of Us). Thank you Jarrod for keeping us informed!
I have the exact same config as you bro 🤌🏼✨ just one question. All of a sudden, it hangs on the computer by itself while doing my light work. It's like if you insert a broken cd, the song skips, like that. I bought it in December 2022. I'm not sure if I format it. I tried all kinds of fix commands from cmd screen but it didn't fix it. does it happen to you too? It originally came with windows 11 installed.
@@boppernostopper8598 I never properly measured and took note of performance with 3DMark or some other benchmarking tool since I got it, but as long as you keep your fans and exhausts clean, the laptop shouldn't lose performance
@@Avucoda Never heard of this issue, I still refuse to upgrade to Windows 11 because I know I will encounter more problems. Try updating BIOS and other things maybe?
Wait im confused. Were the 4060/70 max power limits of ~ 100W removed by Nvidia since you originally made the video about Nvidias power cap? Because in this it shows the 4070 running at 140W?
Hi! Can you please help me choose between these two: - asus tuf a15 ryzen 7 6800h rtx 3060 (140w) 16GB ddr5 - hp omen 15 ryzen 7 5800h rtx 3070 32GB ddr4
Pity you never managed to benchmark a 2022 5 Pro with the RTX 3070. I really wanted to see the generational change in the Legions from 3070 to 4070, since it uses the 150W 3070.
The 4070 is a difficult one to justify in a thick chassis this year. You’re really not getting the same benefit that you used to from going with a bigger machine. So far I’ve tested the Flow (lighter/smaller/smaller charging brick) in some of these benchmarks and scored the same, even in the lower powered 90-100 watt profiles, thanks to the efficiency of these cards. Plus the extra hurt of seeing 4080 and 4090 laptops nearly doubling those scores 💀
Hey Jarrod, I saw that some people are getting random errors with this laptop (like driver errors) and when they play games their laptops crash, is this issue common and was it solved???
man, the 4060 and 70 are sorry. I think there's an argument for the 4050. The 4080 is amazing, brings gaming laptops to a whole new level. But upgrading from a mid tier 30 to 40 card makes no sense.
In Australia 4000 series laptops are actually cheaper than 3000 series for some reason and 4000 laptops can go on sale. I recently bought my pro 5i with 4070 32gb ram for 2.8kAUD (1.8k USD) which is good price here.
did u get i7-13700hx o i7-13900hx ? is the 60$ upgrade for i9 worth it or is 17 13th enough for gaming ? (im asking for same model but im gonna go for 4060 version as its asking 250$ for 4070 upgrade) n already its 2000$ with 4060 here.
@@hemendraravi4787 I got the 13700hx with my unit. i7 is always more than enough for gaming but hey if it’s only $60 difference to get the i9 then I reckon go for i9. But other than that, i7 is plenty enough. If anything else the 4060 might bottleneck the i9. So if your purpose is to game, I might as well spend a bit more and get 4070 and stick with i7.
Great video, though I thought it was a bit too negative given the availability of some great deals on the Legion Pro 5i. Yesterday, I purchased the Legion Pro 5i with i7-13700hx CPU, RTX 4060 GPU, 32 gb DDR5-4800 memory, 1 tb M.2 SSD, and 240 hz 1600p display from B&H. At $1249, this was a phenomenal opportunity relative to similarly priced gaming laptops, including the ASUS ROG Strix G16, which comes with an i9 CPU but 4050 GPU, or HP Omen 16, which has a much poorer display even with the same refresh rate. The system display is great, the build is solid, and it comes with a large number of ports. For someone who will use a laptop for multiple purposes (work, web browsing, watching videos, online roleplaying, and minimal gaming [mainly BG III]), I don't think there is a better value available at the current time.
Hey man! Also got mine from B&H. Got the 4070 option. $1569. Definitely worth waiting for the price drop. Especially considering the fact that the sale is off now and prices have returned to normal
The performance is actually great, 80W CPU + 140W GPU under full load is excellent. But the prices are ludicrous, thus making 2021-2022 models look even more compelling
great? it's 10% better than a 2 year old model and on par with the last year's model, with 1% lows(fps drops) being *worse* so tell me again, how is it great?
@@alun1038 even if we're talking about the laptop itself, the last year's 3070 ti Legion 5 pro is like a couple % slower, so even comparing to Legion 5 it's bad considering it's new.

I recently bought the legion 5i with the i9 13th gen with a 4060, off an early Black Friday sale from Costco, I’m hoping this performance will be comparable since it was a pretty cheap price.
hey Jarrod, which one do u choose? mostly for gaming ASUS G16 i7 13650HX-32GB-2TB SSD-8GB RTX 4060-FHD+ 165Hz or Lenovo Legion Pro 5 i7 13700HX-16GB-1TB SSD-8GB RTX 4060-WQXGA 240Hz they are the same price here
Lenovo was amazing with price around 1200 eur for rtx 2060 or 3060 , bur with legion 7 4080 costing here 3500 eur and strix 16 4080 costing 2500 eur or scar 16 3500 eur with mini led display..
Great video as usually. It seems that from marketing Lenovo thought if they add "pro" word in naming, that means that it must cost more. Comparison of lenovo 5 & 7 pros should be interesting as maybe it worth to take base 7th version rather than taking top 5th.
I reckon it's more they cut stuff out to keep prices down for the 4080/4090 models. NVIDIA have no competition in high end mobile and they never miss an opportunity to price gouge OEMs, AIBs or consumers
Lenovo Legion Pro 5i 16" WQXGA - 13th gen i7 with 16GB - RTX 4070 is available in approx 1600 USD at my place, do you recommend it? or is there better option at this price? kindly suggest.
I got a 2022 5i pro (3070ti) that I absolutely adore. This channel actually helped me make the decision over the 2022 M16 I had. I got it on sale with a few nice features, including that 3 year full warranty. After taxes and shipping it came out right at $2000 USD. It might be worth looking into depending on your needs.
good job choosing the lenevo. My 3 year old m15 is absolute garbage and started having issues from the 3rd month of ownership. Asus is a marketing company at it's core. Planning on replacing it with this laptop from the video since I get some pretty good discounts privately.
Jarrod, Is it possible to replace the 80wh battery of the Lenovo Legion Pro 5i with the 99.9wh battery of the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i? What about speakers? I am asking this question because these machines literally use the very same chassis and speakers and the battery of the lenovo legion pro 5i is terrible.
Regarding speakers, I saw some Reddiot had replaced his pro 5 speakers with pro 7 ones. The new speakers fit physically and electrically, but he had to cut off the plastic mounting pins in the computer case because they were in the wrong place for the new speakers (or rather, Lenovo had probably intentionally made the mounting holes in the pro 7 speakers reversed in order to prevent people doing this). So it's an easy but destructive mod which I'll not be doing it as long as my warranty is valid. I haven't investigated if it's possible to drill new mounting holes in the new speaker units instead. Besides, with some Nahimic tuning activated, the pro 5 speakers don't sound as horribly tinny as they do out of the box - clicking a button upgraded them to average gaming laptop speakers. :)
someone help, i need to make a decision and i can't... I need to decide on Lenovo Legion Slim 5 - AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS 16GB RAM 512GB SSD RTX4060 or a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro - AMD Ryzen 7 6800H 16GB RAM 1TB SSD RTX3070, they're both literally the exact same price and I don't know what to do.

How accurate are the CPU benchmarks done when unplugged? Have they changed since the first review? Is it possible to force higher performance for less battery life to recover a bit of perf? Will be a major factor in deciding which one to purchase since I need high single core cpu performance working in Unity game engine.
It would be nice to see a test on a normal i5 or i7 to see how computers with CPUs perform versus ones with CPU+GPU or with AMD how a APU compares to a CPU+GPU.

do you think the voltage limit on the 4050, 60 and 70 will be increased sometime in the future with a bios or software update? (talking about the laptops not reaching their full 140w in games)
No. Long answer, nope. Usually on mobile it's locked down short of crazy hard modding, which nobody does on laptops anymore bc of the risk (cost of entire motherboard replacement) and rewards being so minimal (headroom is not there thermally/power delivery to make it worthwhile).

Wonder if its worth getting Lenovo - Legion Slim 7i 16.. granted that version has i9 but how much are you leaving on the floor with an i9? Or, an i7 is perfect
Hello! Since the last few weeks, I have been researching a lot to decide between Lenovo Legion Slim 7i 13900H+4070, Legion Pro 5 13700HX+4070 and Legion Pro 5 7745HX+4070. My actual purpose of buying is music production, live music performance and gaming as well as CGI. Music does need a higher single core performance and therefore thinking about buying the Slim one as its 13900H has a higher clock speed. But I'm afraid because of it being slim, will it compete well against the other two laptops? Can anyone please help come to a conclusion? Thank you so much!
Curious if the AMD 2023 version with the 7745HX/4070 will be reviewed? Would be interesting to see the battery savings and performance difference for the pricing.
Legion gen 8 kinda mid except for the 4080/90 version, wich also cost more. Gen 7 Legion aboslute W for the price to performance. The Legion 5 3070 ti is currently on my wishlist now.
originally got the i7 4070 for 1700 during a sale on lenovo site, but was pretty disappointed in the performance and was just planning on getting the 3070ti variant from last year until I saw a 4080 legion 7i 2tb/32gb open box at my local microcenter for $2400 so I adjusted my budgets around and bought that instead and am way more happy. Getting double the performance in hefty games like spiderman and cyberpunk and witcher 3 with RT maxed. I don't think anyone should pay more than like $1300 for a laptop with 8gb vram. Gonna be an issue real soon, heck even for some games right now.
And in a couple years the 4070 will be relying more on DLSS3 to maintain smoothness, and relying on devs to include technologies in future games is an unknown (I'm old enough to remember the attempt to bring 3D to gaming - the only good thing to come out of it was 120hz panels)

Not really Lenovo's fault, but the 4070 for around this price is just bad value considering how it performs. People who are just gaming should buy the $1350 3070Ti model and get basically the same performance for $500-$600 less as you mention at the end of the video.
Unfortunally its not only NVIDIA with the 4070 but also Intel 13th gen is very disappointing. Both Price to Performance and Performance per watt is bad. AMD not only wins massively in efficiency but their top gaming processor Ryzen 9 7945HX beats Intels laptop workstation equivalent I9 13980hk both in performance and efficiency at the same time.
I think this would be a great mid-range laptop, but I think the big problem with this laptop is the existence of the 2022 Legion 7i, which is on sale right now.
@@mehdishirazi3 Metal is worse for me. Jarrod, can you also check out the AI engine on the Pro 5 and Pro 7? Balanced mode is surprising. Less wattage, but great efficiency. Considering the costs of running this laptop over the course of a year, Balanced Mode could save you some cash! Over the span of it's usage, say 2-3 years, that's a considerable saving.
Yeah this is a great laptop if you take cost of ownership into account. It's like buying inverter versus non inverted appliances. Sure, it's cheaper at first, but once you use it over a year, you'll be surprised how much electricity money you are wasting. Still, I am disappointed in Lenovo downgrading the display's maximum brightness in this year's model.
