I enjoyed the video. Nice job on desoldering the bios chip quickly. You made it look easy and I feel inspired to give it a try.

Hi Mike Neal, It's nice to inspire someone, Give this a try on some scrap motherboards or PCBs if you can find any. I used to struggle with this type of desoldering and basically developed my own style which works well for me. I only make it look easy because it really is not difficult! There is an old saying 'a bad workman always blames his tools' but If you can't do it this way then it is almost certainly is the tools you are using. If you cant get the pins of the chip to bridge with leaded solder, make use you are using a chunky enough soldering tip, make sure you have the iron hot enough, and enough wattage 60W+ preferably a T12 soldering station or better (I use 380C but this will vary a bit for different soldering irons) and use a good flux like NC-559-ASM though I think mine is probably fake. If you still struggle to do it, try warming the area with hot air first then bridge the pins with leaded solder, but really it means your soldering iron is not up to the job.

@@orion310591RS I used to struggle with this sort of (de)soldering job like everybody else - try my advice, good quality soldering station like T12 with a big chunky tip, good flux and hot air. Then tell me it isn't as easy as I make it look 😉

Hi Richard like I said on first video the vcc_gt comes only up when it is needed you will it see per example when it is loading windows or when you watch youtube . So I was right it was corrupt bios. Now you must see if smd fea has put your dmi info back in bios and windows key. Good work man 👍

Great repair Richard, i also thought that it was a Bios problem, but the missing voltage on the one inductor really caught me off guard, but just another Red herring, that isnt actually the problem!
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair 2 года назад
And sometimes that is the way it is - I also thought it was power rail problem or near short until I found the datasheet for the CPU and realised this rail is a high power (amps) load.

Very interesting one! Beeing a repair guy not always easy. Cpu voltages fluctuating and the fix is the bios chip. Not easy at all.

Nice one Richard !! Just the job. I was thinking I’d like to know the voltage of that inductor too lol. Ch431 rescued a gigabyte mb with an i5 off a mate who said it was toast. I did the bios and it came to life like yours did kind of. Called him to tell him he can have it back but he’d already taken delivery of a new setup and I could keep it as he figured it was scrap so that went to my son as his first rig. Result 😁 Enjoying the interactive style here, thanks

Nice to see you liked it - I will do more videos like this one, but not all the time. Yes, an eprom programmer (even a very cheap one like CH341A) is an invaluable tool that will pay for itself over and over again. Even my TL866CS which was about €60 was making money for me within the first two jobs

For those who want to de-solder the BIOS chip without hot-air, you can use low-melting point solder which allows you to remove the chip just with the soldering Iron.

No only a couple of times - and I don't have the HDD, but I have no reason to expect this would not be working reliably now as it appears to be a well documented failure on these laptops

Hi Richard, Interesting video. One question/comment, dont you lose a bunch of laptop specific data when you reprogram with a base bin file like this. For example MAC number, serial number, password etc ? Any idea what you actually lose and how important is it ?
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair 2 года назад
Yes - this is why I had to upload the original BIOS file to badcaps.net and the clever guys on there fixed it and gave me a working one - which has the specific data for this laptop still intact. This explains why the forum thread for this model is 8 pages long, and not just one good file for every one to use www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=85142&page=8

Hello, Richard, how old is the bios programmer software ? Maybe on the website there is a newer version available where newer bios chip models are listed.

OK, my programmer is the older TL866 CS, the latest version is TL866 II+ I've had it for about 4-5 years I am using minipro V6.85 but I also have XGecu Pro V8.51 which is for TL 866 II+ and works with my 866CS plus 1.8V adapter, and that does not list this eprom either. It was fairly easy to get around this problem but it would be nice if the software directly supported it.

Do you have any help if not can I send it to you to repair and could you give me an idea of cost? when you go to the bios setting (on info) it doesn't have some info about the laptop ? like serial number ? uid ? and some on ? or it does not give some error on power on or reboot related to that ? because the new bios doesn't have the same serial number and other stuff like that, like for example the windows key if is missing the windows wo'nt activate ... and you must fix that with uefi tool for example... ? or Mrs SMDFLEA has fix that on new bios, and pass the old bios info to the new bios ? thanks for upload... ;) greatings from Portugal...

Yeah this is why Mr SMDFlea and others on the badcaps BIOS request thread ask you to upload your original BIOS file, then they extract some info from that and put it in the non corrupted file which they upload back for you. I am not an expert in this area though I am sure if you start a thread on badcaps the guys there will help you learn how to do it, they are a friendly non-secretive bunch of guys. At the moment I'm happy with the fact I got a response within 45 mins (processing times may vary 😉) but if I ever get the time/inclination to look into this field further then i will. I have a similar laptop (identical looking mobo) that I got for $150 on a black friday sale. Worked for about a year then one day it was stone dead, no lights no nothing. Took it apart, voltage tested some components near the power plug, mobo seemed to be getting power, battery was fully charged. I was at the limit of my diag abilities but it was looking like a full mobo replacement. A used mobo from ebay was over $200, so now I have a big paperweight. From watching the video I now suspect a corrupted bios. You get what you pay for I guess.
