Hey Sam, yea I can imagine lol. I probably could have attempted it, but I wasn't sure if the middle or top slot was best, so I tried a couple of configurations and it seems the top slot is best, so you did it right the first time 👍 Btw, which 2TB drive did you get? I was debating between this and a WD SN850X, but this was cheaper and I've used Kingston before without issue. I normally use Samsung drives, but decided to stay way since they had the 990 drama recently.

I cloned my old T730 legion tower 2tb m.2 to a 4tb m.2, then took out the shipped 1tb in the new gen 8 7i which, as shown was under the gpu, and put in the 4tb with win 11 in slot 2 [since the new 4tb had a tall heatsink] and a 2tb m.2 for data only in slot 1. It all booted up fine, speeds fine, and the switch from old to new tower looks same

Hi Dem! Thanks for the video. I was wondering if you could do a quick tutorial on how you would add a 2.5'' SSD and 3.5'' HDs as well. I have 2 laying around from an older build so I'd like to install them as well. I haven't been able to find a clear user manual of all the ports on the motherboard, which is the reason for my question. Thank you!
@DemCrumblies
@DemCrumblies 9 месяцев назад
Hey Brian @SLDSNK777, Lenovo has some pre-ran wiring to allow you to insert either 2X 2.5" SSDs or 2X 3.5" HDDs on the rear side. If you look at this time-stamped clip it will show the two bays for the 3.5" HDDs and some wires tucked in the bays to use: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LWwMAuRki-g.htmlsi=XszIMFPIGf3unHen&t=303 Currently, I have 2X 3.5" HDDs in those two bays, but I didn't install any 2.5" SSDs since I have the 2X 12 TB 3.5" HDDs. So you should probably install the HDDs which are the higher capacity and use the pre-ran wiring for two HDDs. I didn't look into running additional wiring either because I have tons of storage right now with the 3.5" and the NVMe drives.

Thanks for the info and I wouldn't guessed there was a difference in the speeds in each slot. My 2TB Samsung drive speed test was Read 6719 / Wrtie 4975 in the middle slot. I would think it would be best to have the main drive above or below the GPU instead of under it to help keep it cool and not introduce additional heat under the GPU. Anyhow has anyone confirmed the largest size NvME you can add to the system. I have read that 2TB was the limit for each slot.
@DemCrumblies
@DemCrumblies Год назад
I think you might be right about the 2 TB limit: news.lenovo.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Legion-Tower-7i-34L-8_Intel_7594L4DF-221130_AEM.pdf I haven't tried anything above 4 TB, but that would suck if we are really capped to only 2 TB. Just bought Legion Tower 7i Gen 8 (Intel) with RTX 4080 Super after having CyberPowerPc computer for 10 years, do you think this new computer will last another 10 years, I am wondering what's the highest storage ssd is supported for future upgrades, as I got 1tb x 1tb on both slots that came with it. When 4tb ssd get cheaper I want to add that in the future. For the RAM is it possible to upgrade the ram to 7000mhz in the future. I am just curious how future proof this computer is. Like the video!
@DemCrumblies
@DemCrumblies 5 месяцев назад
Hey @djbombba, congrats on the new PC! That's probably like entering another world after using a CyberPower PC for 10 years. This PC can definitely last a long time too depending on what you'll use it for. If you want to play a top title game in the next 9 to 10 years with max settings, it definitely won't do that, but you'll probably be able to play most games at medium settings I think. I've added another 2 TB NVMe drive to mine and did a video about it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Cix_Cy5d-4M.html but I think you can install up to a 4 TB NVMe drive. I also have two, 14 TB 3.5" HDDs that I use for cold storage. I also upgraded the RAM on mine to 6000 Mhz, 64GB ram and did a video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cbVs2AhZNVg.html but other viewers have installed 7000 mhz RAM. So far, Corsair Dominator & Corsair Vengeance RAM works without issue. Hey M P, yep when I ordered mine, there was only this version available on the website. They later added in the i7 versions and the 4090 versions. Another viewer on my Corsair Ram video installed 64 GB of the Corsair without any issues, so you should be good. Are you planning on putting in the 5600 mhz speed? I also installed two 3.5" HDDs in the back, but I didn't install any 2.5" SSDs because once I used the power cables and SATA cables for the 3.5" HDDs, none were left for 2.5" SSDs. So I'd have to buy more SATA cables and power cables to run to the motherboard and PSU, but I'm happy with the storage I have now so I didn't want the extra headache. If you just install 2.5" SSDs and leave the 3.5" HDD bays empty, you should be able to add easily with the pre-ran cables from what I remember.

@DemCrumblies Год назад
Hey @ptzcf4320, I would probably turn it on first without adding the secondary drive, just to confirm everything is working fine, then perform all BIOS updates. I'd install the SSD after. Hey @scottharrod2406 I just added the additional drive for installing games and storing footage for editing, so I didn't change the boot drive. Hey @corduroy73, it should be supported, especially if it fits the slot without issue. This may be annoying, but you can try to swap the drives to put the SN850 at the top and the WD Blue on the lower slot to see what shows up in the BIOS and Disk Management. If the WD Blue doesn't show up even in the bottom slot, it could be defective. Btw, you're on the newest BIOS version too right? Mine is also the air cooled version for the GPU. When you reseat the GPU, it's better to reseat it on the left side first to align it with the rear ports (HDMI, DP), then fit it into the PCIe slot and the tab should automatically click into place once you press down on the right side when seating it back into the PCIe slot.

@DemCrumblies
@DemCrumblies Год назад
Hey James, pretty sure I saw in the specs that it mentioned Gen 4 only, so you may not hit gen 5 speeds if you buy a gen 5 drive, but I'd have to find the specs on Lenovos site again.
@DemCrumblies
@DemCrumblies Год назад
Here's a spec sheet: psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/Legion/Legion_T7_34IRZ8/Legion_T7_34IRZ8_Spec.pdf it shows Gen 4, but that may just be showing the drive that comes with it. You'd have to buy a Gen 5 drive to see if you can hit Gen 5 speeds to know for sure though, or you can ask Lenovo Support about it, but they are usually hit and miss.

@DemCrumblies
@DemCrumblies 3 месяца назад
Hey @hangman_8289, if you didn't touch the prongs in the back, the easiest way to put the GPU back in I find is to angle the rear of the GPU down a bit (slight angle) and line it up against the metal cutouts where the DP port and HDMI ports will go, then when it lines up there, press down gently on the rear so it goes into the GPU slot with the rear pins first, then slide down the the rest of the GPU pins in the front, then push the front white clip back to the lock position. This guide may also help: support.buildredux.com/hc/en-us/articles/4415769337620--Reseating-Guide-Graphics-Card Let me know how it goes. Remember not to force anything, it should slide in with minimal resistance.

I had another viewer ask about adding an elgato card, but because the 4080 is a triple slot card, I don't think another card could fit. So you'd have to buy more SATA cables to connect to the motherboard and power cables for the PSU (if the PSU still has remaining slots) if you want to have up to 4 drives in the back.
