And we have A WINNER in the Portable Workstation - Gonzo category. Don't worry about the 4-Hour Battery Life - - this thing is so fast you'll get an entire day's work done in those 4 hours - - then go to the beach!
My new ThinkPad P72 arrives tomorrow. Actually I bought it because it was big and heavy. For me this is the latest in a line of computers that started with the IBM model 5153 which was a tank. Your presentation confirms my research. Thanks.
As the commenter below said, mobile workstations ARE usually ignored by reviewers on RU-vid. Why do you think that is? While most people seem to be form factor obsessed (wafer thin machines), the specs under the hoods of these monsters can't be denied. I love them. All I buy for home machines.
@@thechillmaster5836 a lot of manufacturers solder everything down so you can't access anything to upgrade - batteries, storage, ram - after the initial sale. or they make it so you can't really remove the back cover.
@@orangemoonglows2692 u have to look at the right computers and brands because a LOT of pc reviews i've seen made it to where u can upgrade the internals
I've had a P72 for 4 months (64GB RAM, i-7 8750, Quadro-P2000, a total of 6TB of SSD memory). Easily blows away the Mac-Pro that was over heating. This machine is a beast. It's thick, heavy, and makes no comprises on functionality and cares nothing on design. No heat problems and I can easily do theoretical calculations (Monte-Carlo, quantum mechanical calculations, DFT calculations on Quantum, topological analysis) and do music editing (24bit/32bit files at 96kHz) without throttling issues. P-72 has a lot of nice touches like a LED lights that comes on when the CapsLock is turned on, rear electrical plug, NumLock, and a series of other nice touches.
@@kaichen575 , no, I haven't tested it via Benchmark. As far as temperature, I rarely hear the fans when it's on for 24hours +. I run programs like Amber and Quantum, that utilize heavy and advanced algorithms (like topological analysis and differential geometry). This is my 1st time dealing with Quadro cards, but so far, they're pretty efficient with high processing and physics engines.
@@paragpaltiwale4310 , to be honest, from my usage, even when I'm just using programs like Microsoft Word, the battery life drains pretty quickly. Then again, I do have 2 SSD drives that are Samsung 970 EVO M.2, each 2TB each, and a 3rd SSD consisting of Samsung 860. I also have a 4K display. All which eat battery life. I would probably say 4 to 5 hours if I'm doing nothing too intensive. In addition, I've had to purchase an additional 230W power brick that I leave in my computer bag or car. This laptop is not made for convenience. It truly is a desktop replacement for most functions.
I am so so happy !! I just bought a P73 , the newest 2020 machine .. will ship in a month !!! is even more brutal than this one. I have a wonderful t440S that is 4 years old already .. I am tired of the 14: screen !! sometimes I have 3 open at same time and within 14" it is a nightmare … this is not much more, but will help a lot … it is bigger, but I need that power and I work on a desk OR at home 99% of the time. I travel very few with the laptop so it make sense to me ! Cross my fingers !
I own one, amazing ....civil 3d, revit, photoshop, illustrator Put it was really put to its limits processing large photogrammetry from drone flights, nut it worked well I7-8750H P2000 96gb 2666 DDR4 RAM (2 × 32gb vengeance 2666, 2 x 16gb 2666 samsung) Upgrading motherboard to: xeon CPU and GPU P5200 Increasing ram to 128 gb ddr4 2666
The P73 has been announced and will be for sale soon, so not surprised that Lenovo supplied this model, if only to clear as much P72 stock before the new models is released. I would prefer if you could leave out the 'background' whaling track on your reviews, but everyone is different.
I'm one of those who needs the power and the screen size... I just don't need the cost. I've got my eyes on the p73 - with linux. I just haven't found one anywhere to handle yet.
I've been using my P72 gen2 for a month, I initially liked it but there is a problem with the battery charger now. Just got it back from servicing, but the problem remains. When the original 170W charger (which works with other laptops) is connected, the P72 gen2 doesn't charge and will slowly discharge making it unusable. The power button blinks 3 times when the charger is connected but charging doesn't start. Now I have to take it back to the service center. Top-of-the-line Workstation I expected more.
@@andrewmarcdavid is the ThinkPad e590 better than Lenovo L340 gaming or legion I don't play games I want a solid good case good keyboard and fast processor for on wifi is the best of the 3 i mention please
Two important things left out in the review, the higher-spec ones are VR ready and there's a hardware RAID controller for the two M.2 drives. My Oculus Rift is great with the P72. The RAID offers mirroring and striping. Striping doesn't give you any performance boost, as the bus is already saturated so mirroring is there for those who need it. If you plan to add an HDD, your options are limited, as it needs to be 7mm thickness rather than the standard 9mm. Depending on where you are in the Silicon Lottery, undervolting can be helpful. -0.120V gives me ~500MHz extra under prolonged full load. All in all, a great powerhouse and I'll be planning to keep mine for years to come.
Still a good choice in 2022? I can buy a Lenovo Thinkpad P73 Workstation - 20QR002LMH for around €900,- condition like new 2.5 years old. Thanks in advance.
Maybe me too. These models, p71 to p72, p51 to p52 has all had heat problems. They also have glossy touch 4k screens - which really is not what i want. If p53 is built with less plasticy and better heat managment it will be great. If same chassi, avoid.
Good review. I'm in the market for a 17" laptop now that the Pandemic has changed my business. (I'm a consultant ... formerly 90% of my time AT my clients' offices NOW 95% from my home office.) My 3yo+ 14" Lenovo Yoga 910 has been THE BEST laptop I've ever used and I've had 15-20 over my career. Now that my commute is kitchen table spare-room-turned-office bedroom I'm happy to accept a hefty laptop in return for a big screen. I don't do 4k video editing or gaming or any of the other things you mention BUT I work with large datasets in Microsoft Power BI. Would something such as this P72 be overkill? What's a good 17" laptop for such work?
How can they claim 18 hours when you only got 4? I usually take what the manufacturer says, divide by three, and generally two thirds of their claim is pretty close for just media consumption and email. This is way lower than what I would have thought though. So, I reiterate, how can Lenovo get away with such a false claim?
I believe the quadro p5200 alone is a 85w gpu... a macbook pro has a max total tdp of 100 (for travel on airplanes no more is allowed). These laptops also overheat like crazy, even if u use stand with fans. There is a reason apple went aluminium, as the plastic on these cant handle heat quick enough. The 4k touch screen is also a battery waste. Maybe bye a mbp 15 instead. Run windows and linux on virtual box instead - lenovo has excellent workstations with quadros, they dont have good enough laptops though. Most people on forums with p51 to p72 just sendcrhem back, repair them or lower tdps themselves un bios... on 4k laptops...
Thank you so much for your video. It's super helpful b/c it definitely is a laptop that was on my list. I'm looking for a 17" w/ a great or very good infrared camera on my laptop b/c I teach online. My students need to see what's on the screen. I don't know if you know of a laptop w/ a great infrared camera. I'll be checking out your other videos. The other computer I was looking at was the HP Envy 17T. What are your thoughts and recommendations?
@@andrewmarcdavid Is it still a good choice in 2023? I can buy the top-end model for around $800, but would it be better to get something like the Samsung galaxy book 2 pro?
@Andrew Marc David Great Review, as always. Why not review the ASUS Zenbook 15 Pro (UX580GE)? It would be interesting to see the comparison with the Dell XPS 15 9570
The m.2 ssd s if the two slots are populated does they share the same lanes? I mean if you put two m.2 ssd and run a test of them both at same time will they be both running max speed?
I'm sorry, this laptop needs to have a 4k 60fps camera at least (most modern smartphones have a camera of this spec and it's super cheap anyway). The body needs to be metal for durability and cooling. The GPU is overkill, and the CPU needs to be AMD RYZEN 3rd Gen. With all of these improvements, Lenovo could sell this laptop for less than 3k. I understand that this is intended for use by professional designers etc, but Lenovo could easily improve the design massively. The price is far too high, and Lenovo are only selling it at this price because they know there is no budget for a multinational company that would buy these. I absolutely love the Lenovo ThinkPads, but I am not alone in wanting a sub 2k, fully metal, RYZEN, high spec camera... Device.
I like your ideas for improvment, but I prefer the hard plastics over metal. Metal get dents easyly, the materials in those Thinkpads are very durable and more resistant to scratches than metal is...
Heh. Hey PAL, you look you should be selling used furniture in the meatpacking district. .................... ...........................You wouldn't happen to be related to watto would you?
Yuck! A laptop with a numeric pad... Still do not understand why... These are portable workstations, so why not allow for a little more keyboard to type on? I have not seen ANY engineer use a numeric pad. And oh yuck them bezels!! Not caring about a 17.3 slab, I have a proper workstation with 32 inch screens. Powerhouse maybe, but not my style.
Maybe for number crunchers, encoding large dataset for those who use this machine for data science & running statistical computing softwares like SAS & R.
