I received mine about a month ago. Paid for it in cash. I'm new to Lenovo. I can't say this enough... this is a REAL desktop replacement. It's heavy and it's big. I don't want anything thin and I want it to last. Especially, compared to my Sony VIAO I-7 (8612 with 12 GB RAM) of 2012. I ordered mine with a 4K display, 64GB RAM, i7 8750, and small 256GB hard drive. I've already ordered a Samsung 870 EVO 2TB PCIe M.2 SSD and a Samsung 2TB 2.5 inch SATA SSD. Overall, the computer is going to cost a little over $3,000.00 with all the upgrades. However, a Mac Pro with these specs is over $9000.00. The 4K display is incredible to look at. The colors are beyond spectacular. Put it this way, even RU-vid doesn't look the same anymore. The screen size... well... it makes wonder why anyone would want a 15 inch screen. For those of you ordering a P72, as far as expandability, go to websites like Reddit. There are parts that you may have to purchase to expand the unit. Especially, if you're upgrading to a 2.5 inch SATA. The processing of this machine is beast, even in cases where I'm dealing with computationally heavy calculations like inverse Bessel functions and Fourier analysis is nothing short of spectacular. I just can't believe with the expandability of up to 6TB of memory, I won't have to worry about having separate hard drives for large files. I can edit music, play games, run advanced physics engines (for atomic & molecular physics simulations), like Quantum, Amber, DFT calculations, and almost anything with this machine. Keep your thin and overheating laptops. If you want a laptop with pure functionality of being a workstation that will destroy the competition, look no further.
@@mackenzieperrault7382 , if you're into recording files up to 32bit at 192kHz for mastering and synthesis modulation, not only does P72 have the ability but you're not worried about memory space. It does this without even getting hot or obnoxious loud fan noise.
Hi Erwin, Thank you for your extensive comments. May I ask which RAID setting you selected? No RAID, RAID0 or RAID1? Also, do you think that 32GB for this machine would be sufficient?
@@8strings, honestly, I choose no RAID simply because I don't know enough of redundancy memory and I use an incredible amount of memory (I record music in 32bit 192kHz for Fourier analysis so a 10 minute wav.file is about 1GB of memory and I do a lot of recording). Secondly, memory for this computer is highly expensive (since it's the more expensive M.2 technology (around $500-600 for 2TB) and SATA SSD($350-400 for 2TB). Now, you can add a traditional hard drive, however, now that I've been exposure to how powerful and ridiculously fast SSD's are I will not go back to a traditional hard drive. I know there are ways to link to external memory via Thunderbolt and other high volume memory transfer plugs but I still have a lot more learning to do on the matter.
@@ErwinSchrodinger64 Thanks a lot Erwin. Really appreciate your reply and your thoughts. I currently own a T440s, which I am happy with. However, I would prefer a larger and brighter screen (the 17 inch version on your P72 definitely not too big?). I definitely want the 2TB SSD and that brighter 400 nits 4K panel, but I just don't know about how far I should push the RAM options. I currently think that the highest i7 processor will do for me in conjunction with 32GB of RAM. I noticed that the P72 features a number of fan outlets to the sides and rear of the unit. I am a little concerned about the fan on the right hand side. Having owned a Toughbook with a similar set-up, the right hand fan always blew hot air onto my 'mouse hand'. Thanks again.
I bought both the i7 and Xeon version of this laptop, and ended up returning the Xeon. The i7 was outperforming it significantly due to thermal throttling on the Xeon.
I'm still using the P71. Runs like a champ! Can't justify sure a small upgrade to the P72. Plus I notice the P72 doesn't have the "color by pantone" calibration sensor.
Bought the i7,32gb,quadro p3200, 4k model on black friday about $600 off with coupons. Use it for software development, video editing, and gaming. In a few years when I want better graphics I will buy the mobile p5200 upgrade for significantly less than what it costs now brand new. Only thing I dont like is the non hot swappable battery.
Hi, watched your video on the P72, didn't order the top of the range specs, something in the middle. Just wondering, are you glad you bought it? It would be great to see another video on it after after a coupe of months use.
Thx for the review. Your benchmark review would be very helpful if you compare P72 performance against other high-end Lenovo laptops. The question I have is that is P72 suitable for game engines like Unity or Unreal for heavy 3D game design? looking forward to see your new video.
It has a P series Quadro GPU. Quadro has validated drivers and a few features for specific software. If your software is listed or known to support Quadro, it will be suitable. Usually CAD, 3D, simulation and similar are guaranteed to work with Quadro. They are not guaranteed for GTX drivers, there can be bugs, instability, incompatibility when running on GTX and there is no support to resolve. A similar spec GTX has usually 20% better performance for games and video. If you do gaming, video and photo editing, the GTX usually will give you better performance Vs the same architecture Quadro. But the P72 only comes with Quadro, so there is no choice here. The cooling can be a limiting factor, personally I find the P2000 works well in this chassis, above that it is stretching the cooling design, and probably you cannot use the full power of the GPU as it will be thermal limited.
Great review! I have a question and was hoping you could help me. You mentioned in your review that it might be worth it to wait for the RTX Quadro cards. Can you explain as to why? What advantage will the RTX Quadro cards have over the current models? Thank you in advance.
I had it just when it came out, then I have sent it back, due to the following issue: 1. The 4K screen had oversaturated colours in Windows, and there was no way to adjust it. This is because it is a wide gamut display. 2. The international keyboad had cramped smaller keys near the Enter, just like those next to the space. 3. It had a bug in BIOS that if somebody enabled only external or Thunderbolt display, it would brick the machine. The Lenovo user forums are full of this latter. Probably this has been resolved since then, but make sure you upgrade your BIOS.
ok so I do know about the Quadro cards but I do not see the point about the RTX Quadro cards but Is anybody goin to use the ray tracing thing? if there is a reason can anybody tell me why other then being better then the previous Quadro cards?
Let me know if and how you get that working. It wouldn't work for me. Called lenovo support (that I paid for) and their like "we only support our image of windows". I understand that but GTFO here if you think I'm not going to customize the hell out of my $3k machine
@@kennethhudgins1369 The best way to put Ubuntu 19.04 on a windows computer like that lenovo is to load it via the CD option and not the USB option USB has a tendency of failing as it has done me many times but it's never failed on CD. Make sure it's a DVD that you load the OS on so it has Room. Also if you dual boot keep your windows portion because it'll run off of that boot loader which is a better boot loader just reduce your windows portion. That computer is new and will run Ubuntu flawlessly I'll get it working for you just contact me maltemicha777@gmail.com
