Lenovo ThinkPad T470s: Carbon Competition

I don't often get the chance to look at newer laptops, so when I do, it is a real treat. This laptop was a very important one for me to review as it has challenged the gap that used to exist between T and X1 variants. This laptop is so thin and light, a few short years ago, it could have been an X1 Carbon.

What a beautifully produced and presented review. With so many T470 and T470s ThinkPads out there, these reviews are so useful even 10 years down the road. Thanks for making the effort to produce such superlative content. In December of 2021 I bought a pre-owned T470s in mint condition for $175. It's the i5 6300u configuration with 16gb, 256gb NVMe SSD and the 1080p display. I added another 16gb of RAM during a Crucial sale for $53. I know I know, overkill, but it was fun. I love these ThinkPad S models. My T430s from 2012 is still going strong with 8gb and 256gb. I'm not a gamer or do CAD or heavy video editing. My T470s is perfect for Photoshop, Lightroom, all productivity programs, Internet and content creation...and even Premiere. The previous owner somehow put Windows 11 on and it runs flawlessly. It took me over 2 hours to de-Microsoft the OS, shutting down their data collection and tracking. It's now a local machine...none of that 360 mess. For my total investment of $228 with the extra memory, this was a steal. Best of all, it's really light, and is a travel/coffee shop warrior.

The main reason for 6th gen CPU's being offered on the T470/T570 is for Windows 7 compatibly for large companies.

Another quality video, keep it going. I'm always happy to watch every of your new vids :) FYI: T470s, along side with T470, T570 and X1 Carbon 5th gen has a thermal limitation for CPU at 75°C, and I'm quite sure that T460(s) also had this limitation that cannot be worked around by using intel XTU or throttlestop. Despite this limitation, T470s will still be able to sustain 25W of continuous CPU power, which is enough for KabyLake-U series. In terms of hardware whitelist, every Thinkpad from x50 series has got a white list for WWAN card, but not for WiFi card, so you can still replace the original ones with AX200 for wifi6 exprience. You also mentioned that there doesnt seem to be a place for x1 to exisit, since Txxs is already thin and light anyway. I think a plausible reason for that is X1 offers other features that Txxxs cannot. For example, beside P series workstation, only X1 series offers full 40GBps, 4 lane Thunderbolt 3 ports. And for Kabylake and Kabylake-refresh platforms, X1 Carbon also has the biggest built-in battery. Other factors like premium materials and top-of-line display options also count to that. All this points me wounder, why Lenovo is trying to make Txxxs more like X1 and X1 more like....what?
@LaptopRetrospective
@LaptopRetrospective 3 года назад
The X1 Carbon (8th) has a 51Wh battery, so cloes to the modern T14 and less than the T14s with its 57Wh. So the TB3 lanes and better display options, plus build materials might be the few remaining differences. I totally agree with your final statement; to me, this is X1 territory, so now what's left for the X1 to do?
@yingxiangyao5323
@yingxiangyao5323 3 года назад
@@LaptopRetrospective In my opinion, Lenovo is using X1 as the new brand to compete against Dell XPS or Macbooks for general customers that does not know a lot of Thinkpad. So you see, a lot of Tech reviewers that are not really into business orientated products would often call x1 carbon just as lenovo x1 carbon as the others would emphasizes the thinkpad brand.
@LaptopRetrospective
@LaptopRetrospective 3 года назад
You raise a valid point about branding, the X1 name is very important not just internally, but perhaps even more so externally. In a team of machines, it is indeed the one most reviewers would and do often compare against other brands. I've spent a lot of time trying to find videos and content that was comprehensive that compared the X1 Carbon to the T14, T14s and X13 and came up short. I'd love to make that series myself but my pockets aren't that deep.

Great video, thanks. I use T470 and X270 as my basically daily home laptops and I do not really need more. They are fast, they are light (I have the large and small battery for each of them as well as the internal batteries in both of them). If I need battery life, I just plugin the large battery on the fly, or the small one if I need it light. The 470s does not give that option, but is even slimmer and lighter. I may be getting one of these to my collection though. Good thought with the X1 carbon at the end, I guess that the X1 carbons are basically the more expensive premium variants now...

If something were to happen to my trusty X240, I'd definitely look into getting the T470s. Or an X1 Carbon, depending on prices and configurations. It really depends on whether we ever get to leave the house again, ha ha. I had the same thought as you in terms of the differences between the T470s and the X1G5. Ages ago, I remember seeing a Mobile Tech video where Lisa compared the slim ThinkPads of that year; the T470s was bigger than the X1, and I guess every gram and mm count when you're a road warrior. The other big distinctions between the two is that the T470s offers expandable RAM (with the X1 Carbon, that's not the case so you're stuck with whatever the laptop shipped with) and the option of getting a touchscreen for the T470s (at that point, the X1 Carbon no longer offered that option since they spun that off to the X1 Yoga). The Carbon X1G5 had much better battery life, again something that would really appeal to someone away from the office more than not. That said, given my modest CPU needs, I think I scored a real winner with my Asus ZenBook UX331FAL, which I snapped up off Craigslist for $500 Cdn. The specs say it weighs 985g, but mine only weighs 965g, making even the latest Carbon X1 feel heavy at 1.09kg! (Having said that, I've never looked at the innards of the ZenBook UX331FAL, so it could be hell to service. It's also not as comfortable to type on for long periods of time, which is why the X240 is my daily driver, whereas the UX331FAL is my "hopefully, travel will be a thing again one day before we grow old and die" laptop. ETA: Back when I was shopping for my X240, I was also looking at the much thinner and lighter X1 Carbons. I remember telling you that I almost bought a X1 Carbon (3rd gen, I think) but the seller sold it to someone else because he was put off by my question of battery life (I wasn't even negotiating his asking price, just wanting information). I was obsessively researching older X1 Carbons at the time, which is why I could tell you so quickly how the X1G5 compared to the T470s!

Haha, yeah I'm not too worried about a few grams thankfully.
@claudiaw9246
@claudiaw9246 3 года назад
@@LaptopRetrospective Yeah, it really all depends on how much time you spend carrying your laptop around. I prefer to travel with just carry-on, so each gram matters when you're limited to 7 to 8kg when travelling outside of North America. But yeah, for most people, it's a moot point. If I won the lottery, I'd run out and get the X1 Nano, ha ha.

@@LaptopRetrospective By the way, the original SSD failed (not unusual, since it was five years old and who knows how it was used before I got it) so I ended up having to do a fresh install of everything (the recovery USB stick didn't work so I had to download Windows 10 from Microsoft directly). Since then, Lenovo Vantage, keeps disabling the Battery Charge Threshold. I don't suppose you know what might be causing the problem? I've updated all the drivers, so I'm at a loss, because it was working fine before the SSD meltdown.

Okay, so most laptops that had Express Card, come with them. On the T540p it's located just above the SD card slot on the left hand side I believe. It might have a blank installed but pressing it in should eject it.

Hi would you please recommend. I have two offers - t470 or t470s ? It's really hard to decide. t470 is with i5-7200u, used, no warranty; 8 GB RAM, 240 SSD, external battery 6-cells Li-Ion (72Wh), 460 USD; t 470s is with i5-6300u, practically new, 12 months warranty ; 12 GB RAM, 512 SSD, 545 USD. In general I would prefer t 470 with warranty, i5 -7, etc. but I can not find one. Thanks in advance!

@@LaptopRetrospective hi again. I contacted the seller of t470. He sent me this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KTLTjCVNg2I.html and told me the laptop has the same cosmetic problem. Both clips are broken. He said it is very hard to notice it. But I'm not sure is it really only a cosmetic problem. He told me also that the laptop has new SSD Kingston and everything else is perfect with the machine. I checked this guy, the seller. He has a very good reviews in some local sites. His hobby is to refurbish laptops. But, as he is a private person, there is no warranty. Can you advice me on this issue please? Thanks in advance.
@LaptopRetrospective
@LaptopRetrospective 3 года назад
The clips are likely broken as they state and due to that won't fully close the keyboard deck and top cover. Depending on where the clip broke that means replacing the bottom cover or top deck. Not impossible but not ideal at that price point either. If you can view it before buying that's the best way to make up your mind.

S variant doesn't have two batteries, has soldered RAM and not as many configurations if I remember right. If you want something slimmer and you're buying it used, the X1 Carbon is more of a better comparison.

What's the difference between the progressively thinner and lighter T-Series machines and the X1 Carbon? The X1 Carbon is a halo product marketed as the ThinkPad equivalent of 13" MacBook Pro. Like the X1 Extreme, It's a product which draws the attention of people who are outside of the core ThinkPad customer base. The Carbon with its more expensive build materials justifies a higher price than the T-Series machines which, being targeted principally at corporate IT departments, are designed to meet a lower price-point. The Carbon is less practical, more "premium". But then, I'm sure you already know this.

It's been a very educational video for me personally. I'm used to seeing older generations where the comparisons between the two groups were seldom made, but now I feel that game changed along the way and I'm working it out for myself. I'd love to get a modern T series and X1 side by side.
@XMACHINAv2
@XMACHINAv2 3 года назад
@@LaptopRetrospective The 8th Gen X1 Carbon (the only one with which I have any experience) feels like a very finely-made product: It's more than that it feels "solid" which is probably the impression made by any ThinkPad model in any series; the X1C is aesthetically pleasing in a way which isn't easy to describe. The sort of subtle qualitative difference between the X1 Carbon and the thinner T series models probably can't be fully appreciated without by a side-by-side comparison; and that difference won't be enough for some people to justify paying more.

Carbon? Less ports and more throttling :) Watching this on Dell Studio 1537 with C2D T5470 (2x 1,6GHz) and 2GB DDR2 RAM. 7th gen i7, even low power one, seems like a huge upgrade now. I had a Latitude equipped with i5-5200U for few weeks, but as laptop is not that vital in my life now, and family needed a computer for distant education for their kid, we gave it away. Even used computers prices are stupid now where I live, nobody should be forced to buy a computer, when prices are 20~30% higher than a year ago. Kinda amazing how 13 years old CPU can still do basic computing without any problems - I run Lubuntu 18.04, as newer versions don't support i386 and browsing internet gets only slightly annoying on heavily scripted websites. Even RU-vid have little to no problems, though watching anything in 1080p is only good if laptop is not disturbed by other things - and 720p is perfect anyway, as it has 1280x800px screen. I even installed SNES and PSX emulators for late night gaming! It weights about 3kg, though... And I need to remove screen cover and get rid of old, annoingly sticky rubber coating.
