Thank you for all this content and inspiring me to take up this skill instead of sending things to the recycling plant I can bring something back to life.
Rear opportunity to view the methods and skills of critically analyse and SMD repair work. Thanks for enable us to view and experience yours skills Alex!
Lenovo seems to be a good choice overall. My Lenovo ThinkCentre was manufactured way back in 2009, but it is still fast enough to watch a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 at 60 frames per second. So there is no problem watching YT videos or NETFLIX at this resolution and fps, and also movies and TV shows that are 100% free at a website that I found. I bought the Lenovo as a refurbished computer. So it only cost $200 CAD ($157 USD). Anyhow, the CPU stays between 40 - 55 C temp, the GPU 38 - 50 C, and the SSD about 27 - 31 degrees C. Good enough for me.
Do you mean to say that they charge for a screen replacement but only replace a fuse? That would be a dirt bag move on the part of the shop. I know they have to diag the problem but they should not be dishonest. Remember also that fuses typically won't blow just because there was a reason that it blew
I want to compliment you on your saying, it doesn't matter which of the two connectors for the screen... I like that.... Job well done....you nailed it big time..
Most of us will try to fix, fail and tell the customer a chain of technological phrases, trying to get the customer to pay for a new board. Northridge Fix repair and ship it back to a happy customer.
Wow just wow awesome fix ones again Alex. Another tiny cheap part that fails and makes the whole laptop unusable crazy... we need the right to repair so we can get scematics. In the mean time we are lucky to have you and you knowlegde 👍
Hi. I usually never comment anything on youtube what so ever. But i just wanted you to know my appreciation on your videos. I dont have any technical skills regarding your work, but i find your thought process and person amazing. Its just a great combination. So yea well. I wish you , your family - and obviously big boss the best
@@chriszahra4755 yes exactly. Always disconnect the battery first and every other power source. Also is it good to push the on/off switch to discharge all components of the board
With ALL Thinkpad laptops (and possibly most modern laptops), it is REQUIRED to either disconnect all batteries or temporarily disable them within the BIOS BEFORE removing the LCD connector. Otherwise, the fuse blows when the LCD connector is disconnected as the LCD power lines are always "hot" even when the laptop is off. Older Thinkpads did not have this requirement as I was able to plug and unplug LCDs even while the laptop was on (for testing). Not sure when it started but definitely around the T460s and 6th gen Intel Core laptops as I had to learn the hard way. To be safe, always disconnect all power.
I blew a fuse on a T420 by changing screen without pulling the battery. I ended up piggy-backing the new fuse physically adjacent to the original as I don't have the soldering skills to pull off a full replacement. This guy makes it look super easy. Let's pretend it's all in the equipment 😀
You can't disable the LCD in the bios, the backlight power is from the main power rail, it's always present. It's this way from the beginning (from the T410 for sure), but almost all laptops have the backlight voltage direcly connected to the main power rail. (However sometimes you can disable the battery in the bios but it's easier to be careful and take a second to align the connector properly)
What is the best way to size up these bad fuses for replacement? Is it enough to just match up size? I have some other dead lenovos, maybe take the fuse from those? should those be cross compatible? Edit: I used a macbook pro backlight filter (labeled with a "P") and all worked out and my backlight is back!
Thank you for sharing all your hard work, help us alot to learn. Quick question, i have lenovo x1 carbon, its not powering on, power button blinks 4 times, fan spins once but not turning on. Any suggestions. Thanks in advance
Random but you should do a short where you do that shaking hand trend so I can have hope in being as precise as you or maybe knowing why I never will be
Dear Alex. I watch all your videos. I am trying to fix my sons graphics card (Sapphire R9 390 Nitro) and have determined the problems are a blown fuse, 1 mosfet and for good measure the 5V regulator on the backside. I have ordered all parts BUT I cannot get these chips off at 400c (of course with AMTECH flux). This seems way higher than other boards that I practice on at 350c and remove chips with ease. What temperature do you advise? I did get the fuse successfully swapped by first adding low temp lead solder. Soldering on the replacement was easy using leaded solder. But I next wanted to do the big 5V voltage regulator and it isn’t budging at 400c. I am worried about damaging the traces if I go further up in temperature. Also I don’t think adding low melt leaded solder would work since this chip is surface soldered underneath. Just for added information, this board is black (not green) so I am guessing this means it can handle more heat than average? Not sure if that means anything. Could you please advise the best way to get this chip off? I am guessing the last chip mosfet will be the same difficulty since it is also soldered from underneath and must be flow soldered off. I am using a good SMD rework station that can go up to 450c. Thank you Alex ahead for any advice. Your videos are great & greetings from Canada! Anyone else who knows the answer please also advise. Thanks! This is a great community.
another great information video.. not just ordinary but extraordinary info for me as DIY technician. i can learn more and more how to troubleshoot and where to start troubleshooting when something same like in the video.. thanks
Thank you for the Video, I' have Lenovo Idea pad 5 and suddenly the backlight is gone, I have tried another LCD same issue, tried External monitor and it just worked fine, do you think the fuse could do that? I know if the backlight on the motherboard got bad it should be same result on the External Monitor, right?
Achoo!! ..and it's gone..into the 9th dimension..lul you should do a vid with some of these components next to a dime so people can get a scale of how small these parts are. Love the channel btw.
There's a menu dedicated to battery connection on the BIOS on my Thinkpad X1 carbon laptop, maybe it's adequate to prevent blowing fuse while changing parts such as LCD
Even my 2021 Lenovo Legion 5 has it. No need to physically disconnect the battery. That bios option will disable the battery power until its plugged in or something.
Question. Why old laptops working properly and new laptops have a lot of problems? I have an old Lenovo g550 from 2010 and it's working like first day. Greetings from Romania. I admire your work, I wish I could do the same same work but I can't afford the technology you use.
Why did the fuse blow in the first place? I would have done some more digging to see if there's anything drawing more power than usual which would cause the fuse to blow. Maybe one of the LEDs in the backlight failed and that increased the power draw causing the fuse to fail. Seems a little risky just putting a 0R instead of a fuse without confirming that all current draws are normal.
Hey brother ....love your videos ..would it be possible for you to mention the cost of repairs please ...we know that your skill and experience is really what a customer is paying but I would love to know
I have two old Steelseries Cataclysm mouse that I broke via static from my finger. They dont' make this mouse anymore and used ones are going for $200 and up on eBay. Is it worth sending to Northridge to fix?
I once blew this fuse when I changed a faulty screen without unplugging the battery. In the end I replaced the whole motherboard as I could get my hands on one for 30€ which was cheaper as letting someone exchange the fuse. Sadly my soldering skills are not up to this task.
For reference if someone is going to replace your screen: Be sure you disable or connect your battery before disconnecting your display, it blows the fuse.
Hi NorthridgeFix Can I ask for a video on Lenovo ThinkPad T420 Backlight Repair. Currently this is the problem I have and cannot find video for that on utube. It will really be useful thanks man.
Since we are unable to call you guys for repairs anymore, I submitted a form to mail in a repair and still haven't heard back three days later oh, what's the best way to reach you guys now?
spitefulwar I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe. I got it in my about tab.
Hi northridge fix I have hp laptop 8770w My laptop not charging while the computer turn on But when i shutdown it the battery charge well I need your help to fix my problem Chager is 230 Watt My laptop work probably well when i remove the battery and connect the charger Best regards
I have a set of PS4 controllers and they all have a problem with the power. The battery does not charge and the LED does not light, although I changed the usb boards. I am an amateur technician and studied this until the middle school. Please explain in a video how I can fix this
Hello, I have my Lenovo T420 notebook which no longer shows images on the very weak screen, I can't see it and with the audio outputs burnt out p2 and headphones, can you tell me where I can find the damaged part?
