Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (9th Gen) vs X1 Nano - Choose the Right One! 

* I mentioned Battery life is better on Nano but didnt give you times. I got 11 Hours of battery life with Nano and 8.5 hours with Carbon. With that being said, which one would you choose? One of the best review I've seen. Thanks @Matthew Moniz. - I decided to purchase the ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 7 Intel (14”) - Storm Grey. I do miss the lightweight of the X1 Nano , but for me I need the ports and other features.

I got the x1 carbon after a month of dilemma between this two computers. X1 wins for me for the ports (add to the portability not having to carry dongles) and with the FHD+ display the battery life is up there with the nano.

Got my nano last week for when traveling and I found myself using it at home more often than my main laptop, just because is such a joy to use even on the bed or sofa, and for programming or watching movies you don't need a powerhorse

Great and very useful side-by-side comparison but I have 1 huge (HUGE) quibble. It may be just my opinion butI think any programmer would tell you an extra 13 minutes in compile time difference on the same code base is a LOT and definitely more than “not that much” as you described. Granted a lot of compiles of this size are usually offloaded to a server so if it’s only an issue when you’re travelling maybe you can live with the longer compile to gain a bit more in portability. Still very much appreciate you including the compile time tests in most (if not all) of your laptop reviews. It’d be cool to see a few compile timings in different languages but I’m guessing that’s probably a bit outside the interest of most of your users. Along with Just Josh testing Linux compatibility on the laptops he tests your compile test is very useful to those of us that spend our lives writing code all day. Cheers, Christopher

Of course, the X1 Carbon is also offered with WUXGA Low Power screens, which will significantly improve battery life. With such a screen, the X1 Carbon will beat out the X1 Nano in this regard.

Nice video! exactly what what I was looking for . I saw the video you did roasting the laptop setups and noticed the nano looked real nice. I have the first gen x1 extreme I got from work but I want to pick one of these up for my own personal use.

An excellent video and comparison. Thank you. I'm a huge ThinkPad fan, I have a 1st gen X1 Carbon as my daily driver, copped it for only $140US. What a bargain. Nothing wrong with it. I might buy another ThinkPad soon. I'd love to have a Nano if it matched my budget but I'm not prepared to spend more than 1000 for a laptop.

Having experienced both the carbon and the nano, if you were deciding between the two, which one would you personally choose? Update: I ordered a Nano, then cancelled that order and ordered the Carbon. I am pleased with my decision.

Just take a X1 Carbon with a 2K screen, 4K doesnt make any sense on theses form factors anyways and you get a huge battery life boost and price advantage also

I prefer the Cardon, as an IT guy I need to create labs. The nano is limited to 16 G RAM. However, for the Carbon you can get the 32G.

For laptops, intel laptops at least, I would never recommend an i7. Go i5 because the cooling from the laptop can actually heat up and you actually get better performance

In 11th Gen Tiger Lake, Intel has made their already confusing TDP Rating, more confusing. That 1160G7 supposed to be what their previous Y series was and supposed to have a base TDP of 7W. But in Nano, it can reach up to 40W momentarily and runs at constant 15W afterwards, never going down to 7W. That's the main reason, it performs similar to the so called higher TDP 1165G7.

Taking your advice, I’m an IT Manager and have been using X1’s forever and want something to smaller to travel back and forth - remote access etc.. so I’m hoping this will fit the bill, getting a deal on nano gen 1 -i7 16GB 1TB from amazon. Fingers crossed!!!! Btw your videos are great

A very interesting video review you could do and comparison, would be the x13 yoga versus the X1 Yoga. Also just the normal x13 versus the normal X1. Make a video on that man, it would be so a killer and get a ton of views. I just bought the X13 yoga because I got an outrageously good deal on it in vietnam, about half the retail price for a brand new top spec 1tb i7 machine

Also, you can get up to 32gb RAM on the x1c this year. Not available on the Nano

As a SWE, I always prefer X1 extreme, because it has a 64G memory model :)

I bought, and returned, the Nano; the keyboard was markedly inferior to my T480s (and even to the Gen 8 Carbon I have access to), but mainly because the screen gave me eye strain. I also found the lack of ports limiting (though I do have a USB hub) and the screen should've been at least 13.3". Of the two, I'd pick the Carbon for the bigger screen and more ports, though I have to try the keyboard to see if I like it!

Nano is truly a best balanced option for my office (excel, email, cloud-ware) and travel usage. But one of the biggest "problem" with nano is the fan position. I am a right-hand user and I am really enough with this crazy design to heat my hand since 2017! Really confused and wish to see the next year model will place the fan as it is as the carbon which then nano will be my only just-take-my-money option.

Great review & comparison. I was undecided between these two, but think the X1 Nano is best for my specific needs, Currently own the Dell XPS 13, so the lack of ports is no big issue, and I'm okay with using dongles to connect to monitor etc. I do a lot of travelling (when there isn't a global pandemic). The X1 Nano is so powerful for a sub 1kg machine. It's the perfect laptop for portability, whist still having the iconic ThinkPad keyboard.

I like my nano. It's light enough that it works well as an e-reader using the Kindle app. Very comfortable to hold when reading. The 180 degree hinge helps with that too.

I was close to buying one but when with 5900hs asus instead. Had thinkpads for last 13 years and would get it again if it would be offeret with 8 or minimum 6 core cpu and 64gb ram

IT an admin would more likely go for a T-series since they still have Ethernet jacks, which neither of these have.

I have X1 extreme gen 1 (all specs maxed out) Loving it.

I would always pick a 14 inch over 13 or 16 inch as a programmer. I think 16 inch it too big too heavy hard to find space for it in the bag, walking around with it is annoying. 13 inch is almost perfect just lacking this little extra. 14 is the sweet spot in my personal opinion.

Nice review...re: X1 Nano vs X1 Carbon...I'd still go for the X1 Carbon...ports and larger screen. Yes the X1 Carbon is more expensive but Lenovo is frequently running sales that will get you to a much reasonable price...you just have to be vigilant and patient. I'd probably go for the 1920 X 1080 Matte screen...better batt life and less reflection.

All Lenovo needed to do was put a 360 hinge AND 1 more Thunderbolt4 on the other side and this would have been the perfect laptop (for me)!

You just need a Nano along with the C Dock. It completely satisfies my needs.

Typing experience is NOT identical as he says. The X1 Nano keys are a tad bit shallow and key travel is shorter. The X1 9th gen is the classic Thinkpad keyboard. Good key travel and well spaced out

Look like professionally this laptop!!!

I was between a 14” MBP coming out pretty soon or the X1 Carbon gen 9 and what actually sways me to the MBP is the absolutely horrendous video and audio for the webcam. It’s the top of the line business computer and everyone is using so much more video conferencing. What else did they skimp on?

The nano makes a lot of sense for me as I dont travel much but when I do I need a laptop which is light comfortable small and powerful , but I dont have a habit to use phones or tablets so i need a laptop ,

What a good laptop, I wanted to ask your opinion, what do you think would be an improvement laptop if the Lenovo Thinkpad x1 extreme 4gen, dell xps 15 2021 or the new Alienware x15 2021, which would be the best and quality, I wanted a laptop for the flight simulation 2021 and for work, I am not a gamer and I do not want for games only for the flight simulator

Also the SSD on the Nano is abnormal. It only has chips on 1 side, not 2. You can’t put a normal 2242 SSD in it.

Have you tried screen sharing by video conferencing with Google Meet, Teams or Skype? Connected to the power with the battery selector at maximum performance the laptop is unusable. In my tests I have seen that the system does not have the ability to properly dissipate the heat generated and the performance is very low. Ahh... and I have the latest version of the BIOS. What can you tell us about this?

In the UK this comparison is not relevant on pricing as both are exactly the same, for the same base spec. At £1750 for i5/16gb/512gb, they are def not aimed at consumers as these are extremely poor value compared to the competition. I have seen a similar spec XPS 13 for £600 less! Assuming performance is not important, so we can exclude Apple and AMD I would suggest something like the upcoming Galaxy Book Pro, saving £400, but let us be honest the X1 line is strictly for fans of Thinkpads, Enterprise or those that can afford it, these are not for those looking for value or features?

X1 nano is the best laptop for school and college, even for office if you travel much and are fine with using a small screen

Hello Matthew! The comparison in battery life test between the X1 Carbon and X1 Nano is unfair because the X1 Carbon has a 4K display and significantly uses way more power and has a huge impact on battery life. For the FHD+ model, if you redone the test, the X1 Carbon would win here, with its larger 57 Watt hour battery. Again, it's just my opinion. Feel free to disagree if you want. They're both great laptops for personal use though. Just pointed out the unfair part, regarding battery life!

For me ill choose still Carbon. But because I don't have a laptop. I wish I have a nano. Here again wishing one.
