Lens Showdown: Canon vs. Sigma 70-200mm f2.8

The Canon and Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 lenses each retail between $1300 and $1400, so which one is right for you? The Canon offers slightly better durability and image quality, but the Sigma offers optical image stabilization (which is only available on Canon’s $1800 equivalent lens).
I did a few test and explained my opinions on the comparison. Regardless of which lens you choose, a good reliable and fast 70-200mm lens is an essential part of any photographer/videographer’s gear kit.

The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro DX II - I paid £215 for a mint secondhand one and it far exceeds anything Canon can offer for the money, build quality and optical performance. The only downside is the vignetting that using it on a full-frame body produces wider than 13mm.

I really have to disagree with your evaluation of the pictures. To me the sigma was far better. I had the nikon and sigma, I sold the Nikon and have never looked back. I absolutely love the color rendition and optical quality of the sigma.
@tombuck
@tombuck 5 лет назад
The Sigma is terrific, especially with the stabilization. It’s just that, for me, Canon is overall a bit better (build quality, AF speed, ability to consistently get good results). The Sigma is an OUTSTANDING lens, especially for the price. In fact, I recently purchased the Sigma 24 1.4, and can’t believe how sharp it is. It’s quickly becoming my favorite lens!

Gotta say, my Sigma 70-200 2.8 held up great in the rain. Shot a car race, and it started to rain on and off. Although it was covered, it still got wet and worked like a champ.

Nice! I’ve only used it in light rain while photographing football games, but it has always held up. I’ve used the Canon is pretty extreme weather, so it’s be awesome if then Sigma has the same durability for a lower price.

@@tombuck I haven't used it in harder conditions yet, but certainly will. But the fact that it held up in the rain, gave me confidence that it can hold up to the elements.

Agree with many comments below that the Sigma colour rendition is far superior. Optical Stabilization is huge factor hard to dismiss so easily, which only Sigma employs. Sigma has 22 Elements in 17 Groups compared to Canons 18 Elements in 15 Groups. Sigma has 9 rounded blades vs. Canon's 8 rounded blades. The deal breaker is Canon's front facing lens element rotates making it near impossible to use a Circular Polarizer or Grad ND.
@tombuck
@tombuck 4 года назад
Great points all around! Love Sigma. Although I should point out that this Canon 70-200 doesn’t have a rotating front element, so filters work great on it (all of the zoom and focusing is internal).

That's just brand preference and bias talking in regards to Canon. The reputation of the 70-200mm has held solid for years. I think sometimes people get so hung up on "opinions" in the profession that it's harder to step outside the box and admit, Sigma nailed it on this one and gave Canon a run for their money.

I have been shooting exclusively Sigma lenses for the past 15 years. Originally, the reason for buying Sigma was price, now, I love the quality of their new lenses. I've owned probably 15 different Sigma Lenses over the years and the newer lenses are definately high quality build and has high quality glass. I was shooting an eagles nest with my Sigma 300 2.8 with a Sigma 2x, another photographer had the 600 5.6 prime lens. He let me shoot a few photos using his Canon glass, when I went through processing the images, there was no difference. I know Canon lenses are top notch and built a lot better, but for the money, I'll shoot Sigma any day. Great video and review.

Hi! I'm a Korean. Thank you for sending me the video that I was really curious about.I'm going to buy 70-200 lenses, but I'm thinking about Sigma and used Canon. L lens's own style and feeling. I've never used Sigma, but I have fewer opportunities to use it. I just started taking pictures and I'm using Canon R6 for my body. I stopped and checked every image between the two in full screen. At 4:26 (70mm) they look as sharp but the Sigma handles contrast way better (evident at the metal railing over the fabric shades), same story at 100mm @ 4:31 (check the higher offset squares on the pillars when you can see much more of the outline through the Sigma), and the same again at 200mm @ 4:34 (again the outline of the offset square is much crisper with Sigma and washed out through Canon...plus the shaded shapes on the fabric look better delineated through the Sigma. Maybe it's a metering thing... but again in the plant close up series i see much better contrast through Sigma throughout the f/stops. As a stills photographer i would buy Sigma. And dropping the lens on the ground is not in the menu. It may survive but usually the alignment is lost and it will never be the same again. That's why you never buy battered lenses "that still work fine".

@shreyaspraneshtingu
@shreyaspraneshtingu 5 лет назад
Lol.... For the image stabilization test between the lenses at 6:26, he's zoomed in a tad bit more on the canon to exaggerate shake. If you're doing video, might as well use a 85 prime or a 100 macro on a gimbal. With an aperture as open as 2.8, you can go crazy low shutter speeds in outdoorsy conditions, removing the need for OIS to click photos.
@tombuck

I can promise you they were the same focal length, maybe the camera moved slightly. I definitely wasn’t intentionally creating shake- this is just how the results came out.

liked the video, but you got some things wrong... I've got the Canon one, the same one you've got, and it's not weather sealed. I've had mine since 2014 and some dust has got in. The other thing that bothers me is that you mentioned, that IS is used for sports. That is not really true. It is useful under 1/200 shutter speed on a FF. In sports you'll be using at leat 1/1000 shutter speed and IS ins't really needed at those speeds.
@tombuck
@tombuck 6 лет назад
Thanks for bringing up those points! This specific lens purchased in October of 2016 is definitely weather sealed (I just spent 3 solid weeks with it in the rain/wind). I’m not sure if the design has been updated, or if I just got lucky, but it’s been in some pretty intense weather over the past 2 years with no issues. As for IS, you’re definitely correct that it doesn’t really matter at those shutter speeds for still photos- but it can make a difference for video, so it is an important feature to notice in that regard. Thanks again for bringing up these points, they may be helpful to others looking at these lenses!
@wopacupaproduction4637
@wopacupaproduction4637 6 лет назад
Hmmm, very interesting. It looks like it's mildly weather sealed. It doesn't have an O ring at the mount right? Mine doesn't. I also have a 24-105 and that one is advertised as WS and has the O ring..
@tombuck
@tombuck 6 лет назад
How strange, you’re right that it does NOT have an O ring, which means it’s probably not officially weather sealed. After looking through Canon’s own website I can’t find any mention of weather sealing for this lens. I have had it stand up to intense weather with no issues, but it looks like that’s not how it’s officially rated. Very important to know!

Im a Hobby photograper, shooting mostly animals in Zoos and next to the riversides. Because i dont make money with my photos i go with the 3th party makers like sigma and tamron, I would go with the sigma, if i would make money out of my photos i would go with the Canon (1800€). As a Hobbiest those 3th party lenses are very good and they are getting better, i use the Sigma 150-600mm C, i was considering the Nikon 200-500MM 5,6 but the price difference is 500€ and thats too much for me. Also i have a Sigma 105mm 2.8 Macro and its fantastic, the Nikon 105mm 2.8 Macro would i get only if i had a Nikon DSLR with more then 30mp. But everyone needs to deside for him self in the end.

how you're doing i just got my canon 80d and i want a good zoom lens like the sigma 70-200 and it's all black and i see it takes great pictures. i want a few lens but i don't want to kill my pockets you understand. but i'm in love with sigma products and plus it's cheaper than canon. i guess those photographers can buy them cause they get paid i do this for fun and i want to be good at what i do ya see.i want to get this 70-200 f2.8 over the canon 55-250 so i want your opinion i'm going to buy the 18-35 sigma lens the 35mm 1.4 sigma lens and the 70-200 that's a good combination right? i was thinking 24-105 and the 24mm pancake lens and my collection is complete
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
Sigma makes truly fantastic lenses. The lenses you're thinking of are all terrific. You probably won't need the 24mm pancake since the 18-35 can cover the 24mm focal length AND has a wider aperture (unless you just want a super small lens like the pancake for travel and stuff). A 24-105 is also really nice for covering a bit of everything, but the only downside is that f4 can be a little tricky to work with indoors. If I had to make a recommendation, I would say start with the 18-35 and the 55-250. Those two lenses will cover just about anything you need, then you can start to decide what's missing and what you want to add. You might decide that you really want a super wide lens, or you might want a cool 85mm prime or something).

I’ll be the first to admit that I have a Canon bias, so that could definitely be the case! However, I really do love this Sigma lens, so I don’t want to short change it. The video might not give the best examples, but after using both lenses side by side for a number of years, I’ve personally been able to get more consistently sharp images with the Canon. But the Sigmas stabilizer is incredible! Not sure if that’s helpful though...
@TheDonuan

The Enthusiasm Project It is thank you. I seen comparisons go both ways And I would probably have a Canon bias also since its native And has a Trusted name. I think the key word you used is "consistently". It probably catches the focus a little bit better And sometimes that is very important you don't always get a second chance. Also that tells me I might not want the Sigma without the OS. Thank you so much for your help!

Yep, either of these will work on Canon's APS-C cameras. The added benefit is that the crop sensor will even give the lenses a bit of a further reach 👍

How about the AF accuracy of the sigma and canon 70-200 in the "AI servo", tracking mode?
@tombuck

I haven’t done “scientific” testing, but in my usage, I don’t notice any difference.

Do you honestly believe that Canon's Telephoto lenses are faster over Sigma's?
@tombuck
@tombuck 5 лет назад
I’m not sure if you mean faster in terms of autofocus or f stop, but either way, yes. It’s easier to consistently get great shots with the Canon, but the Sigma is definitely no slouch.
@AsianWithHat

Haha, thanks! The Sigma has fast autofocus, but the Canon L lens is just a bit faster.

The sigma is definitely made out of high grade plastic. I’ve owned it and even seen one crack when it fell mounted to a tripod at a wedding.

Really? Wow, that’s scary. The Canon is surely built like a tank!

On your mini delta what Mac slicing program do you use and how did you get it to sync please tell
@tombuck
@tombuck 6 лет назад
I’ve been using Simplify 3D so far with the Delta, but I’m also going to play around with Cura. I just save all the files to the printer’s SD card so I don’t have to worry about connecting it to a computer. This seems to be a pretty reliable method.
@prestonwoodworth5754
@prestonwoodworth5754 6 лет назад
Yea If simplify3D works for you keep it also did you have to use a profile was there a profile already programmed in because in Cura The mini delta requires you to create a profile and code the exact movements which takes hours I still haven’t figured it out I’ll try simplify 3D and see what it does thank you
@tombuck
@tombuck 6 лет назад
I should have mentioned the profile! I was able to download one from the MP Delta Mini wiki at mpminidelta.com It’s worked well for me so far.

i am rather clumsy. i dropped the canon off my shoulder in its case to the ground and broke it. i dropped the sigma the same way and i didn't have to send it repair shop. only the filter gave in. maybe there was some kind of divine interference. LOL.

Sigma makes lenses specifically for each camera manufacturer, so you just need to shop for the “Canon version”.

Ahh, if you’ve got the Nikon Sigma, it probably won’t work with the Canon (although there might be an adapter that would work).

Care to elaborate? I try to be objective, but there’s always room to improve (and I do have a Canon bias).
