You don't hold a base compass at waist level if it's mirrored like your example, that is why it has a mirror. You tilt the mirror so that when at eye level you can see the compass dial. You then using the sighting picture the same way as a lensatic compass and read the dial via the mirror. So your major issue is not a flaw it's user error. I would say lensatic compasses a better for quick accurate readings as you don't have to adjust the dial to the north needle. Base plates are often better for map work.
I tested such a cheap china compass. It showed an error of plus or minus 10 degrees. The error varied, sometimes plus 10 degrees and sometimes minus 10 degrees. Note that I can use a compass.
