Leo Icaza: The Most Influential Poi Spinner You've Never Heard Of

He coined the word "body tracer" and defined horizontal stacking for poi. You probably use the tricks he invented every day and don't even know it! Leonardo Icaza might just be the most influential poi spinner you've never heard of. He had a hand in outlining poi theories that are so central to how we spin today that we just consider them part of the core poi vocabulary. How did Leo become such a huge tech poi innovator and why don't we talk about him in the same way we do Alien Jon or Zan Moore? In this video, I explore the history of Leo Icaza's impact on the poi spinning world and the degree to which he's long overdue for recognition.

Thank you for making this! Love your videos and your legacy to poi. You're invaluable and we're so lucky to have you!

I had no idea that he was part of the reason how body tracers started. This is so interesting literally thank you for diving into this.

And this is why I make these videos! So Leo and others like him can get their due!

I was hoping you'd notice and mention what i find to be one of his greatest contributions conceptually that hasn't seemed to become in vogue (yet) in the poi community--his work with what he's called forearm spinning--propless application of poi tech within just the body itself. Pioneer, this one. I was so happy to see that he'd developed, in parallel/isolation, the same solutions to my own work in translating VTG/poi motion into the body. This work of mine is part of an effort in the liquid dance community to embody poi motion into what we do as a more or less "invisible prop". happy to see his work on tracer conceptualizing likewise gave nod to liquid dance. Ideas flow both ways, it seems

Don't get me wrong, there are a LOT of ideas in Leo's back catalog and I hope that by being exposed to some of these that it'll inspire people to go back and check on some of the other things he's put out there to the world. I wanted to center this video on stuff that people had heard of or had had an impact on the widest possible number of spinners to show how relevant Leo is in our current understanding of poi. This definitely means there were some ideas of his left in the editing room, but here's hoping this inspires some curiosity from people interested in what else he's put out there!

@@DrexFactor absolutely and i fully understand! I realize my interest in this more fringe aspect of his research is very much informed by my background as a dancer ^.^ loved the video! He's a conceptual powerhouse!

It's funny how going back through older videos I'll sometimes spot things that have now become really popular but that we overlooked back in the day. It's really astounding how many hidden gems there are back in all that old content!

By far and away, these types of videos of yours are my favorite. They offer a sincere time capsule into moments of Poi as a broader art expanding in ways that I don't think many people who are just starting their journey can fully appreciate without. People know big names but rarely WHY those names became big other than "They're just really good."

I like these poi history videos... Yuta was the first yt video i saw many years ago... I was blown away.

I wound up watching a lot of Yuta videos while researching this one and I really have to say: Yuta's approach to poi dance is still ahead of its time. His fluency with the prop even ten years ago was just astounding.

@@DrexFactor No one in particular, except I suppose I'd recommend giving priority to those who don't already have an active/ recent media presence. Folks like Leo seem perfect; it's great to learn new insights about the history of the community. Some others that spring to mind: historical places like the Vulcan (or the 'Crew' in particular), histories of particular flowfests like FireDrums, or the history of niche areas like partner poi or contact poi.
