I remember the first time I seen him. I believe it was on Midnight Special and I was about 14 or 15 years old. I was pretty much into Rock and Roll but could not get enough of this guy. He was definitely a gift from God just like Elvis and Buddy Holly.
My daughter will turn 40 in September. When she was little, she always wanted to hear Leon sing this song. Hearing it, she's little again, and I'm a lot younger.
He was a rare commodity. The combination of his gifted vocal chords, remarkable appearance, guitar talents and how he chose to present it all, you have one of the greatest characters EVER in music history. Tell yer kids about this dude.
The tombstone of the great American humorist H. Allen Smith “Life in a Putty Knife Factory”, “The Compleat Practical Joker” reads LIFE IS REAL, LIFE IS EARNEST. POLLY WOLLY DOODLE ALL DAY”.
I played all of his music for my boys growing up. Mostly long on car trips. They are very cultured musically. And I agree so much with you. My boys are now 29 and 32. You never get back those years when they were so young and Mom still knew more than they did lol
I was at that concert too. I brought my dad and we had come to see Leon Redbone and at the time I was more into music than comedy, after Leon did his set we got up and walked out on Carlin… I would’ve stayed now but there was nobody like either one of them.

Saw Leon at the Ark in Ann Arbor in the early 1970s. I was a student and had no idea he was not even three years older the me. He looked pretty much exactly the same in the 70,s as he did 40 years later. It was an old house (literally) and only held about 50 people. The show was great fun.
Saw Leon Redbone at The Quiet Knight night club in Chicago back in the 70’s. Tried to play his guitar in the dressing room between sets, the action was so high I couldn’t play it. Since Leon was kind of a prankster, I’ve since concluded that he probably kept an old Harmony guitar around just for such occasions or maybe he just had a very strong grip. For anyone wanting to play along on Leon’s Albums, tune you guitar up a semitones to F Bflat E flat Aflat C F and your all set to play along. Leon was opening for Maria Muldaur , who was touring to promote her Album and hit song “ Midnight at The Oasis “, which you the way had some excellent guitarist and other musicians on it. R.I.P. Leon on the other shore, one of a kind.
i had the pleasure of seeing Leon perform live twice in Jacksonville,Fl. the first was great. the second one had comedian Uncle Floyd perform. my sister and i hung about to meet Uncle Floyd but managed to meet Leon at the side door.
Listen to any of his songs and you will feel more relaxed and have a smile on your face You gave us the great gift of your music Leon RIP on the lazy river
I got to "know" Leon in the early 70's when I was working for Leo Kottke and Leon opened a number of his shows. I would stand back stage to the side and watch each performance. What a character! Leo and I liked him, immensely! I hope his health is improving!
Unfortunately Dementia only slowly gets worse, this is the main reason Leon had to retire. When you can't remember your own music, it's time to take a trip down the lazy river.
Agreed. Maybe two people such as an epic villan and his side kick came with the idea of Two downvotes as their epic slight on humanity. They they went to itunes and bought his catalog because leon is that awesome.
Saw Leon Redbone and Leo Koetke at the Queen Elizabeth theatre in Vancouver, BC in the early 70's. What a concert! Both acts were super but what really caught my attention was the way LR created an ambience that made it seem like we were back in the roaring 20's. Awesome! Koetke was amazing as well. Hope to see them again.Cheers!
Well, the way I approach it, is nobody else was giving Mr. Redbone any credit back in 2012 when I created this channel, and I decided to do something about that.
First saw you on Saturday Night Live…Shine On Harvest Moon. Had the chance to see you live at the Blue Note on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, Colorado in '79 (I was 19 and it was a 21 and older show because they served alcohol lol) One of the top 5 shows I have seen. Fair winds and following seas…and thank you for the memories.
Great song by great musician :) A friend in college who was a DJ for the college station Had this album, and the whole album is great. I got a copy myself a few years later, and I saw him play live at a bar in Peoria IL in the 80's and he just played so well. It was a great night and I'd love to see him play again sometime...
Yes there is several where Johnny let Leon shine.I sure like the one with about six or so w/inst. especially the largest saxophone I have seen. Big John

R.I.P. Leon so glad I got to see you and meet you.. He was so kind to me who was just some kid in college that showed up I knew he was great and he was and humane and kind to me... I did not get anything out of him though either.... he was so mysterious....
first time i saw leon was in minneapolis around 73/74 he walked out on stage with his guitar around his neck, carrying a baseball bat in one hand and a handful of tomatoes in the the other - and first thing he does is grumble into the mike... just try somethin...
