Willis Alan Ramsey recounts a humiliating attempt to open for Leon Russell, and the touching moment where Leon comforted him afterwards. This video shows yet another heartwarming glimpse into how Leon Russell's compassion and empathy made a memorable impact on musicians in the industry.
Willis Alan Ramsey is an American singer-songwriter who gained recognition in the 1970s for his self-titled debut album. Born in Alabama in 1951, Ramsey grew up in Dallas, Texas, where he developed a unique blend of folk, country, and blues influences. His eponymous album, released in 1972, featured a collection of beautifully crafted songs showcasing his soulful vocals and intricate guitar playing. Songs like "Muskrat Candlelight" and "Satin Sheets" showcase his knack for crafting poetic, evocative narratives that captivate listeners. The record received critical acclaim and became a cult classic. Willis Alan Ramsey's impact as a songwriter continues to resonate with fans and musicians alike, solidifying his status as a revered figure in American folk music.
The Church Studio is a historic studio that was built in 1915 as Grace M.E. Church. It came to life in 1972 when Leon Russell, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Grammy Award winning artist, purchased the old church and turned it into an analog recording studio and home office to Shelter Records. Teresa Knox, a Leon Russell fan and Tulsa native, purchased The Church Studio and has brought it back to life as a professional analog and digital recording studio, event center, audio engineering school, entertainment network, and home to The Church Studio Archive.

People can be so unappreciative... and sometimes drunk. And Leon was such a powerhouse. But he remembered where he came from, and had empathy for others. Opening for him says good things about your talent. And his warm hug is a legacy you can pass along to the next opening act you see struggling. 💕

Indeed! There's so much to be learned from the way Leon treated people. It's an unbelievably amazing privilege to share stories from people who were touched by him.

Circa 1974....Unfortunately I was standing at the stage in Winterland in San Francisco when the crowd started booing the comedians onstage in a pre-concert performance. They were throwing things over our heads at the performers because, I guess we thought they weren't funny. Everyone was impatient for the concert, Santana I believe. Anyway Bill Graham came out and he was PISSED. He yelled and cussed at us for five minutes. I was standing right under him and could see the spit a sweat coming off him. I was 19 and it felt like my own parents were angry at ME. I felt bad for the comedian troupe. Really bad. Say what you will but any performer works his/her ass off on stage and people don't realize it. Selfish. We were all duly humiliated. Good job Bill. RIP.

Graham heard a commotion outside one of his clubs and went out to the top of the steps to hear a kid haranguing a crowd about how music ought to be free for the people and that Graham was getting rich unfairly and so on. Graham stood there, arms crossed taking in the concepts and sizing up the guy. Finally he said words to effect that the guy was essentially right and had convinced him due to the strength of his reasoning. So this was what he was willing to do: he, BUT ONLY HE could come on in and enjoy the show at absolutely no charge--no one else, though. The guy really lit up, and bounded up the staircase thanking BG profusely. At which point Graham grabbing him sent him hurling back down to the street while delivering an on point scolding about hypocrisy.

Do this day I adore Leon Russell he is the biggest Kingpin of music that I ever saw in person and on television brilliant and sweet I saw Leon perform in Augusta Georgia in a small venue and he had three doo-wop girls in the back seems like there was a brunette and blonde and maybe a redhead and I have red hair and I just melted at the thought of being able to be one of his girls of course that never happened but it was a wonderful fantasy all because of Leon Russell ❤🎉🤗

I would never boo Willis Allen Ramsey. The best solo artist that didn't play enough. And Leon was a gem..... a genius.....crippled at birth, he taught himself piano, regardless. That is what made his style so unique. And so accomplished...he played with the Wrecking Crew. He also slept on the streets in LA, just so he could play. So he knows what it is all about. Ask anyone that knew him. Fame did not ruin him. RIP Claude Russel Bridges. aka. Leon Russel. aka. Hank Wilson......A true Okie....a true gentleman.... a true human being....and a damn good windmill hand....playing in Heaven. Peace.
