Leonard Cohen - A Thousand kisses deep
(Spoken poem)
Don't matter if the road is long
Don't matter if it's steep
Don't matter if the moon is gone
And the darkness is complete
Don't matter if we lose our way
It's written that we'll meet
At least, that's what I heard you say
A thousand kisses deep
I loved you when you opened
Like a lily to the heat
You see, I'm just another snowman
Standing in the rain and sleet
Who loved you with his frozen love
His second hand physique
With all he is and all he was
A thousand kisses deep
I know you had to lie to me
I know you had to cheat
You learned it on your father's knee
And at your mother's feet
But did you have to fight your way
Across the burning street
When all our vital interests lay
A thousand kisses deep
I'm turning tricks
I'm getting fixed
I'm back on boogie street
I'd like to quit the business
But I'm in it, so to speak
The thought of you is peaceful
And the file on you complete
Except what I forgot to do
A thousand kisses deep
Don't matter if you're rich and strong
Don't matter if you're weak
Don't matter if you write a song
The nightingales repeat
Don't matter if it's nine to five
Or timeless and unique
You ditch your life to stay alive
A thousand kisses deep
The ponies run
The girls are young
The odds are there to beat
You win a while, and then it's done
Your little winning streak
And summon now to deal with your invincible defeat
You live your life as if it's real
A thousand kisses deep
I hear their voices in the wine
That sometimes did me seek
The band is playing Auld Lang Syne
But the heart will not retreat
There's no forsaking what you love
No existential leap
As witnessed here in time and blood
A thousand kisses deep

I saw Leonard in concert in Vancouver on April 19th and he recited this poem. No words to describe it ... nobody can speak these words like Leonard, not just because he wrote them, but his voice is just so powerful, so deep, and moving. The whole show was incredible, and 3 hrs long.

I think everybody can relate to Leonard Cohen. Even in the photograph to this video. It's simply Leonard with his eyes closed. You can tell he is thinking of something beautiful. I think everybody has a had a moment like in their life, when they just close their eyes and feel the beauty. Whether it is a memory, a poem, or a song.

I have his Book of Longing and this was always my favourite poem. I've memorized it. I'm only sixteen, but Leonard Cohen is my idol. He's incredible.

My Mom listened to this song over and over the last few months she was alive before cancer took her. She was a stunningly beautiful Native woman... in EVERY way.. I think of her losing her life so young when I hear these words The odds are there to beat. You win a while, and then its done Your little winning streak. And summoned now to deal With your invincible defeat You lose your grip, and then you slip Into the Masterpiece And quiet is the thought of you, The file on you complete

I saw Leonard Cohen last night at O2 London too. Wasn't it absolutely amazing. Lots of tears and laughter. Would love to see him perform again at the Albert Hall next week. I saw him at the Albert Hall in the early 70s but can't quite remember the date.

I like this peom better than the version recited on the Live in London recording. I really can feel more of what he's getting at. It's remarkable how he can convey these emotions with his words.

What is it with this Loenard Cohen? Where, does he get the strength or is it courage, to create this sweet, strong, soothing, powerful, romantic poetry that grabs us at the level if the soul? He shines at what is so rare in most men, to just be alive and honest in the words. He makes me crazy, in a good way.

So I'm having a perfectly good day and then I listen to this again and ... oh Leonard Cohen, how you reach out over the space and time and touch me.. again and I come back ..for more .. of my own life .. that passed through that door ... a long time ago. (He makes a simple person long to be a poet)

I saw him in concert on 5-6-2009 in Chicago. He recited this poem. The best concert I've attended in a long time, if ever. He gave a three (3) hour performance of the highest quality. He sounds exactly the same as on his cds. Also his band crew is awesome and multitalented! He was very generous and gave it his all! He returned to the stage 4 times to the audience loud applause and even said beautiful well-wishes to all in the end. And the man is 75 years old almost! He is G-d Sent!

You forgot the Caution label. Handle this one with Care. Don't listen without a net. Even if it is imaginary. If this one gets into you, there are 10,000 barbs that won't let it back out. There is a Point of No return! Past that point, it can only come out the other side. There is no one meaning. It is a revolving door of thought, and no real exit, ever... Every time you listen, there is an additional avenue to stroll,... You'll have have to walk it alone.. forever, alone.Thank You for posting

Somehow he is able to say more in this poem than many others have through hundreds of pages. The poem is poignant, intimate and haunting; filled with loneliness stemming from unrequited love, a nostalgia for what could have been happiness....

saw him last week in dublin.. wonderful rendition of this amazing poem. all he had was a spot light and the organ in the background... its great to get lost in a voice as it happens so rarely. i always feel honoured to have seen and heard such a man as unique talent such as Mr Cohens is a rare comodity these days. when will the world see that image is nothing and the true substance of music dwells within the heart.
